The video starts in Dutch due to communication with Haarlem Port Control, but is completely English spoken. Haarlem is a nice and historical city near Amsterdam. Join me, Henk-Jan on Motor Vessel Lady Liselot, whilst I pass this city with it's small canals. Perhaps you ask yourself: how do I drive a big boat like a 49ft Trawler? Well, let me show you, how I do it.

Een koepelgevangenis is zo ontworpen dat je vanuit het midden veel cellen in de gaten kunt houden. Vooral een praktisch ontwerp, niet zozeer esthetisch, al vinden we dat nu wel zo. Mocht je in de buurt zijn van Arnhem: daar hebben ze een escaperoom en rondleiding in de leegstaande koepel. Erg interessant!
In de pers las ik dat Haarlem het recentelijk is verbouwd tot hub for start-ups.

Thanks for your demonstration of single-handing, especially docking and undocking. That is a skill I need to practice myself now my son has jumped ship for a landlubber life in a flat. 😀
Well Robert, the truth is: the more i practice the better i get at it. There where days I docked/undocked 4 or 5 times in a row, just for the practice. Between piles, between jetties or a along pontoon.

Yes, and the thing is: some of these houseboats are as expensive (or more) that a regular house, just because of the setting.
@@MVLadyLiselot Wow. I was looking at them from 4:50 thru 5:05 and thinking nice setting, but not as attractive as your boat, and as for more expensive than a house? Wow. Is that the costs of the mooring? Can't be the actual houseboat, they look pretty small.
@@chloetzang631 Yes, they are small, We talk about 15x5m. That's a little bigger than Lady Liselot. Nevertheless, you pay for the location and ofcourse the quality of the houseboat itself. The mooring costs are annually for the city. Being so close to the water has it's price.

I took a 24m vessel (TS John Jerwood) through Haarlem, that was very tight.
Yes, Neil, from what I know, the bends (or is it called 'corners'?) in the canal are a challange whit a larger vessel.
Wow, they charge you to open the bridges!
Yep the City Haarlem does and also for the lock as you saw. On regular waterways the bridge openings and lock handling are free.
@@MVLadyLiselot Very interesting, thank you. We just did 7000 knm and crossed over 140 locks and probably as many bridges and it never occured to us that some places charged for opening. I did notice massive fines for asking a bridge to open when not needed though. Even the enormous locks on the Mississippi were free.

Yes, In Alphen aan den Rijn I see the larger barges always use full power to take a bend.

What a great video of a gorgeous city and canal system. Was surprised to learn from you that you have to pay for bridge and lock openings. Are these government or private operations? MV Dirona , a 52' Nordhaven traveled through some of the canal systems as well. Love your narration :)
Hello Paul, I am subscribed to MV Dirona also and saw their footage. Actually all bridges and locks are government operated but nevertheless in some cities (in this case Haarlem - and Amsterdam as per 2022) one has to pay for the operation. In the uppernorth one pays cash for bridge operation. The bridge operator then has a clog on a fishing rod that swings that clog at you. The intention is that you put in € 2.00. That is very old-fashioned, but part of the tradition. Friends of mine from abroad with a boat here in the Netherlands had to get used to this method of collecting.
The bridges are maintained by the community of Haarlem. And not a government system those are free.
The money is basically for the bridge masters pay
Great video you take me places I will never see or travel TY. I noticed that as you were taking in a I think a spring line it was under the toe rail of the dock then to the dock cleat.?? I think that would tear up the toe rail on the dock? TY.
Yes, this dock (first I saw) had a toerail, and very small bollards so I wanted to be sure the lines stayed on the bollard, at least one. With Lady Liselot that high it had happend that the lines got lose.

In 35 jaar verandert er veel. Soms ben ik ergens3 jaar niet geweest en is er een hele nieuwe wijk uit de grond gestampt. Dat zal in the US niet anders zijn, denk ik. In which region do you live nowadays?

Another fun video and very inspiring! When you pay for things like bridge openings, locks, fees, fuel, etc. Could you please say how much you are paying? It is my dream to navigate the Netherlands waters some time. Thanks!
The price for these service most of the time depend on the length of the boat. One drive-through in Haarlem costs me € 17,50, and the lock at the end of the vdo, is € 3,50 for every boat.

@@cuprum166 Hello and thank you for your comment. For those who wanna drive through Haarlem every monnth it becomes a cost burden, but I do it 10 times in the season and I buy 10 at one, so it then even becomes cheaper.
En je kunt zó filmregiseur worden hoor, met dat gedetailleerde camerawerk van je. Écht goed. Én ook zelf acteren! Een soort Clint Eastwood.
Mocht ik nou op een volgend kruispunt in mijn leven aankomen, dan zal ik dat eens overwegen. ;-)
@@MVLadyLiselot Wat anders: je schijnt niet zoveel moeite te hebben die mast handmatig op en neer te bewegen. Het kan natuurlijk ook stoerdoenerij zijn en dat je buiten beeld 10 minuten ligt bij te komen. Als dat zo is, hoef je het me niet te vertellen hoor. Maar ik zat te denken of een dikke veer binnenin die mast niet zou helpen om het lichter te maken. Of een wat zwaardere uitvoering van die cilinders waarmee een motorkap of kofferdeksel opengaan. Maar misschien zie je het ook als sport.
I just found your UA-cam channel, and am enjoying it a lot. Question: I noticed your power chord looks pretty thin. How much power is it rated at and is it enough to run all of your systems? In the US, most boats run off of either a 30 amp chord or a 50 amp chord, but I know other parts of the world are different
Exactly what I thought when I saw the powercord of MY OLOH. "As thick as a baby arm,"I thought (the power cord...) In Europe we have 220v and max 16Amp, so for that reason a thin cord will do.
The Victron inverter handles it all.

En wat ik me nu ook plotseling afvraag: als je met een km of 10 vaart en je zou plotseling moeten uitwijken, zouden de elektrische schroeven dan helpen om zijdelings te verplaatsen, of is het schip daar te zwaar voor?.
Er zijn wel mensen die een sloep hebben en denken dat je de bocht om moet door de boegschroef te gebruiken, maar daar heb je toch echt je roer voor. De boeg- en hek op Lady L:iselot zijn erg sterk en je zou ze deels kunnen gebruiken om in geval van nood uit te wijken. Maar zoals je ziet, moet ik ze altijd aanzetten omdat ze na 10 minuten automatisch uit gaan. Een beveiliging, dus dan moet je in de paniek, eerst de schroeven aan zetten en dan de hendels bewegen. Sturen en had achteruit om te remmen, is dan beter.

Henk Jan, op welke boten is AIS verplicht?
Kleine schepen (de wettelijke omschrijving van een jaggie) langer dan 20m en alle grote schepen (lees: beroeps). Vanaf 2016 pas. Als ik me niet vergis, dan is het een Zweedse uitvinding.
Daar had men wel radar, maar ook veel bergen, heuvels en rotsen, die het radarsignaal tegen hielden. Ze hadden dus vaak geen idee of er achter die berg op 500m afstand een boot voer.
Radiosignaal is wat flexibeler. Dus dacht een slimmerd "Als ik nou een radiosignaal uitzend, die iedere paar seconden mijn coördinaten doorgeeft, dan kan ik eigenlijk om een hoekje kijken, en zie ik wie er achter die grote rots op 500m van mij, vaart..." en zo geschiedde. Ze hebben de processor die al die info uitzendt slimmer gemaakt, waardoor het aangeeft of je voor anker ligt, aan de wal, of anders met welke snelheid. De software kan je programmeren met bruikbare (of voor de beroeps noodzakelijke info), waardoor iedereen elk schip met AIS via diverse 'Follow AIS'-apps kan volgen.
Veel recreatieve bootjesmensen vinden het zo'n briljant systeem dat ze die investering er graag voor over hebben. Ik gebruik het altijd omdat ik heel snel de namen van tegemoetkomende schepen op de AIS zie, en hen dan eventueel kan aanroepen maar je ziet ook de snelheid van dat schip, maar ook lengte, diepgang en meer info.

Een gozer die de Russiesche jachten volgt, die nu allemaal aan de ketting worden gelegd. Hij zegt dat die nu vaak het systeem uitachakelen, juist on niet gevolgd te worden en zelfs strafbaar is.
@@smitferdi5660 Yep, ook internationaal geldt de verplichting om de AIS te voeren. En dat zijn jachten die net even langer zijn dan de 20meter, dus ze zijn het verplicht. Bovendien, veel van die jachten zitten in een charter-bv en dus is het beroeps en zijn ze het om die reden verplicht actief te voeren.

mooie opname alleen jammer dat de schipper de bruggen door vaart als de lampen nog groen en rood branden en hij niet even kan wachten tot het alleen groen is zoals geleerd bij het halen van het vaarbewijs
Zo zie je maar Simon, dat er een groot verschil zit tussen de theorie en de praktijk. Ik heb VB I en II.
Vaar jij ook? Dan heb je wellicht wel eens over de VHF gehoord dat de bieding vraagt om op te varen zodra het kan. "Willen die zeilbootjes voor de brug een beetje vaart maken met doorvaren. Gas er op zodra het kan."
'Groen' kan pas als de brug helemaal in de bovenste stand staat, en in vrijwel heel NL willen de operators dat je doorvaart zodra het kan. Theorie en wetgeving vs praktijk.

@@simonkorsman3894 Als er wat gebeurt bij "rood/groen" ben je de Sjaak. Wel gaan instructies boven seinen, dat weer wel.
@@simonkorsman3894 Vaar al meer dan 40 jaar. Zeker bruggen waar veel verkeer overheen gaat is het heel normaal zodra je kan om te passeren. Dit bevorderd de snelheid waarmee de brug weer naar beneden kan. Heb zelf regelmatig meegemaakt dat de brug niet eens geheel geopend werd en dat het nog rood groen was.
