Missing a lot. I do sit in front of theaters; except looking up to see *any* of it i sit back to row 2 or 4 . I sat 2 -4ft away from a 65 inch for my computer. I also use large screens for presentations with a camera at about 8 ft

Which size ?
I just bought a 65" OLED. Some days I think I should have gotten a 75" mini-LED TV instead. Other days I think "this looks amazing, I'm glad I went with OLED." Other days I think I should have forked-out the extra for a 77" OLED. Basically with so many great options out there it's difficult to avoid buyer's remouse when purchasing a TV. Just try your best to enjoy what you've got.

I have the same problem, but reverse. I bought a 65" LCD and I am thinking why I did not bought a smaller OLED.

@@theomindschrddr7983 Smaller OLED because it had the same price. My viewing distance for movies is 2 meters.

I mostly play driving/racing simulators with steering wheel setup - so I treat my screen like it's a car windshield! That is something specific, right? But it also very much depends on a particular game, what view angle/ position is simulated in-game, and if it is adjustable... etc... Edit: that is why I'm always crying in your comments for "SMALLER HDMI 2.1 tv's" 😀
Now I realise that I need to go for a bigger TV
I like 30° for mixed use and 37° for movies. Now I need to move closer to reach that 37° (with 65") but that's okay for now.

Got a 48 in LG CX and wasn’t sure if I needed to go bigger but I think I’m good. I’m sitting about 4 feet away from the tv usually. I went ahead and ordered the bias lighting kit in the description. Hoping that helps with watching with all the lights off.

Hey... Great Vids! Keep up the good work! I've been watching your vids because I want to upgrade my tv. I have a 5 year old Hisense 55" and I wanted to go all in on the Samsung Q80T 75" until i watched the "Best TV upgrade plan" for 4k TVs in 2020. Hearing that the Q80T is not a step up from the TCL 6 series (2019) and the Hisense H9G made me pause.
tldr I am a casual PC gamer upgrading from a 5 year old Hisense would the Q80T be a good choice?

In late 2019, I spent 2 months analyzing info on a new TV. I ended up buying an 85" Samsung QLED in Dec 2019. I love it and my wife loves it more. She didn't want a TV this big for our Family Room. We had a 50" Panasonic Plasma. I mounted the 85" using a MantelMount and am very pleased - we rarely raise it above the fireplace. OLED is great but the larger sizes like 77" can not safely be wall mounted. We can view our 85" from our kitchen and even from my seating location in our Dining room nearly 50' away. My recommendation is to go with size first. bigger the better. The Samsung QLED quality at 4K and HDR is more than sufficient for our eyes (we are over 65).
Buying the 65 inch TCL R635 this weekend. Sit 7 feet away from my current 55 inch and wanted an upgrade but was afraid to pull the trigger because of the price point but after having a 55 for years, time to upgrade!
I enjoy around 41-42 degree viewing angle for movies, and currently game at 50 degree angle on a 70” 4K tv at 5.5 ft for immersion.. thank you for posting this video.. I never knew about the effect bias lighting has on reducing your perception of the same color on screen.. so, since Phillips Hue lighting adjusts to display and extend the colors on screen, doesn’t that make Phillips Hue bias lighting reduce the overall perceived color pop on screen?

Over the years, my TV size for each affected room has grown substantially. Increased brightness and better sound systems have allowed me to enjoy more immersive content at a greater distance. Affter six years, I'm about to upsize the living room TV to a 75-inch model for jest the user experience you have helped us come to expect.

Currently running a 120" projector at 10.5' (45 degree viewing angle). Switching down to a 100" screen would give me a 38 degree viewing angle. As I'm looking to upgrade the screen soon, I've tested and I can reduce the throw to 100", so this might be a good consideration when upgrading.
Oh man, I've been watching my 4k 55 inch TCL right at 5.5 ft. Calculator says my current angle is 40 degrees. I picked this distance after experimenting between 5 and 7 feet, trying to get that theater-like immersion and able to see noticeable difference between UHD and HD. Turns out intuition pretty darn close to ideal. But you left out a critical factor...vertical height placement of tv in relation to your eyes while sitting/viewing. Center of my tv is set almost exactly eye level. Thanks for the great great tips and calculator.
I have a 82-inch Q80r and sit at about 8.5 feet away with a 7.2.2 home theater system. I tried a 65" OLED in the same room, but the huge 82" screen just hits different

Based off his recommendation I should be buying a 85” tv. I sit 12 feet away and there is no changing it. I had a 65” in mind cuz i want an oled but jumping up to a 77” is a lot more money.
Thanks for the expert guidance. But don’t you think PPI should also be a consideration in choosing screen size? Smaller sized 4k TVs should look much sharper for their high PPIs. In that respect, isn’t it better to get a 55 inch 4K and sit closer, rather than opting for a larger size?

Thanks for the information!! I'm in the grey area. We'll be sitting about 10 feet away in a living room and need a tv for mix content/usage. The living room is generally well lit, but no direct sunlight on the TV.
Trying to decide between a 65" CX and a 75" Q80T. Another note is that the room is a bit narrow, and the people on the side will be sitting closer to 5 feet away. Is the larger screen worth the sacrifice in quality? we'll also have a sound bar, so audio isn't an issue.

I'm strongly considering getting a 75-inch Samsumg QN90A as I watch lots of movies and would love to have a "bigger" experience. But I'm wondering if that size would be too big and overwhelming. I got convinced to go for a 65 inch instead of a 75 inch. I wanted 75 inch beacuse I was scared the 65 inch would be too small but honestly, I'm used to gaming on a 27 inch so I don't think a 65 inch will dissapoint, also they seam to be cheaper so.
65 inch is great. 77 inch would be recommended bij more then 4.6 meters distance. i watching from 2 meters distance its enough. and also 65 inch has better picture quality with sdr content.
@@janduller4722 I actually use ultrawide monitor now. I sold my xbox series x because you cant play in 21:9 with it so I just built a new pc instead. TV is great, the price for size and performance is insane. But I really want ultrawide and curved for imersive gaming and I don't regret.

I got my Samsung in 2020, and it's still running well, amazing. I hope the new TV's hold for so long. It's 55" and when I purchase after 8k moves along a little more, I'll go to a 80".

Almost.
The room is for entertainment.
Therefore light comes in a lot in the morning.
In the evenings, the windows reflections from all light sources also reflects on our current TV.

@stop the fomo - Your references to bias lighting made me look up an item I was considering adding whenever I get a new gaming tv, the hue play hdmi sync box. When I looked up the specs however to understand how it would work, I see it says it’s hdmi 2.0b, so if I plug in a series X later this year or next I’m guessing that means I won’t be able to send my 2.1 hdmi signal from the series X to the TV or am I missing how this would work?
When you gave that recommendation the TV was in 16:9. Is that correct? Is that what I should be using when calculating my viewing angle? Thanks again

I’ve always just gone by the simple rule of thumb to sit 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal screen size for full immersion. With my 77” LG C8 OLED I can adjust my full motion mount so that the TV is anywhere from about 10.5 to about 8.5 feet from my viewing distance. When the mount is fully extended I have had zero issues with turning my head and I find that, especially for gaming, that the immersion is second to none. If I could switch to an 88” OLED or a 95” Sony Z9G I probably would.
When it comes to home theater it’s my experience that you can’t have a screen or a subwoofer that’s too big😂.

My 55" lg c2 is perfect for my room. Since it's not very bright. Once in awhile I'll have the light on, but it's dark most of the time. The color looks amazing. Very interesting video. When I had a plasma TV (1080i) the recommended viewing angle was much further. Now today, it's the opposite. I currently have a 65" curved TV and it's almost 10 years old so I'm looking to purchase a new one. I was just going to go with another 65". But after seeing your video and chart, looks like I'll be going with a 75" tv now. My current sitting distance is around 10.5ft, give or take a few inches. Great topic! For mixed use I prefer a watching distance of 1,6x display diagonal size and for movies somewhat closer - but not closer than 1,2-1,3x display diagonal size.

@@AUA-camChannelwithNoName My 65 inch looks small if I sit in my bed, also it's wall mounted which makes it look smaller, still see the TV fine but it's less immersive than sitting close. I think for bedroom viewing I think a projector would be great

I have a 32 inch wide screen format TV. I checked out the THX calculator and it looks like I'm sitting about the correct recommended distance (five feet) from the TV. This calculator is sure handy. It's a bit more sophisticated than the method I was using before of 'If I can read the ticker at the bottom of the screen during a football game, I'm close enough' :) I noticed on the chart that I should/could sit farther back for SD content than for HD under the 'visual acuity' heading. In that case, I've certainly got things set up right, even if I watch from a chair that is next to the couch and a big farther back from the screen, since most of the content I watch is at 720p or lower. My current TV is capable of 1080p, but I've noticed that some TV channels on it are only broadcast at 720p and that my Nintendo WiiU (my most 'next gen' console) caps out at 720p. The only time I really see anything in true 1080p for longer duration than a TV show is when I watch a Bluray movie on my player which can go as high as 1080p.
The biggest thing determining the distance that I sit from my TV is the length of my shortest cords from my game consoles. I need to keep the couch close enough to be able to play the games without tugging on the cables too hard. The limiting factor there is my Atari 2600.

My current distance is about 11ft and I was looking to buy a 77" LG C2 OLED, would a full swing mount be able to bring the tv about 2 ft closer? I can slightly scoot my couch up if I had too. Should I just send it and get the 83? Only problem is it's $1200 more lol.

I have a 65" tv and in my old house we sat closer and it felt fine, now we are in a bigger house it feels so small, will probably go 75" for the next tv once 8K prices go down
To truly feel the improvements from 8K, go with 85" or larger as even at 75" you won't experience resolution improvements unless you're 6 feet or closer. So you're definitely fine with 4K at 75" unless you're sitting closer than 6 to 7 ft. - highly recommend 77" OLED as this will be better than any 75" 8K non-OLED TV.

Currently have a 65" and looking to upgrade to a 77". Sitting distance is 11ft. On the 65", especially watching movies with wider aspect ratios than 16:9 content, looks a little small. Hoping the larger size will give a slightly more immersive feel to the experience.

65" or 75"?
I'm currently in the market with a budget for either of these sizes. The TV will be eventually placed around 6 feet away from the sofa set and around 12 feet away from the bed. Basically, I live in a studio unit wherein my sofa is at the foot of my bed wherein both the bed and sofa are facing the wall where I plan to mount the TV.
What's the best size between the two for this kind of set-up. The thing is that the 75" might be too big when I lounge/play in the sofa yet the 65" might be small when I end up watching a show/movie in bed before I sleep.

I used the calculator you recommended and for my sitting distance (about 8-9 feet) 77" gets me to 38.5 deg while 85" puts me in 42 deg.
I'm considering OLED Sony 77" XR A80J or LG 77" Class C1 vs QLED Sony 85" X91J or X95J. The X95J is bit out of my price range but I still consider it.
I'm not a gamer at all so this is not important to me. However, as I use Apple TV the Dolby Vision is a must. I almost exclusively stream the content and never do off the air broadcasting. The room is bright but for the evening viewing I will be using some kind of ambient light. The TV sound is not critical as I will be using external speakers.
I would really appreciate your opinion and take on it. Should I go for smaller OLED or bigger QLED?

i sit about 9,5ft from my screen and i am trying to decide between qn90a in 75 inch or qn85a in 85 inch as I can get at around the same price. not a sophiisticated user do not game mainly use as a monitor and watch youtube and tv with some movies, will the impact of the 85inch make up for amy slight quality differences. i see lots of comps saying on the smaller sizes there is no contest becuase of the ips pannel but i am reading the qn85a in 85 inch has a va panel so is it close enoght to the qn90a

10 foot room. Accounting for couch and tv stand distance that’s about 8 feet away. At that distance I’m looking at a 77”. BUT. If I get a good wall mount. $100 I can bring the TV out for movies to decrease that distance to something like 6.5 feet away. Then, I could save tons (or get a higher end model) and get a 65” any thoughts? Any downsides to this idea I’m not considering? My budget is around $2,000. So I’m thinking either the Samsung S95B 65” or the LG B2 or Sony A80K 77”
Hey FOMO, just so you know, the viewing distance calculator you linked is from 2011; it shows the viewing distance for tube TVs and 1080p, but was created before 4K sets were on the market. The television size goes way up to fully capture the quality of 4K.
He was talking about viewing angle though, 30-40 degrees still applies based on preference.

4k TVs are still a 16:9 ratio, the same as 1080p TVs. Screen ratio and size determin how wide the viewing angle is, the resolution does not matter.
If you want to sit closer to take advantage of the extra detail of 4k, then you calculate for a bigger viewing angle, but he explains in the video the possible pitfalls of going too wide.

On biased lighting. I find during the day that white works great but in the evening I set min to a "dark" green! Just slightly radiating from behind the TV.
Well i was going for a 65" tv. And i think i should keep that thought because i can only sit 2 meters away from it. I can sit 3 meters away from it but that is really flexing it. I was thinking to go bigger (75") But how far should i be sitting away then?
I wanna get a 85inch 900h cause of the gaming features but I already have a 900f and dint wana get a lower tv as far as picture quality. So I thought about the the 85 inch 950h. I care to much about 2.1 or gaming im more in it for picture quality and ps5 here and there. Should I just get a 77inch a9g instead

I'm in the process of upgrading my home entertainment system, as we moved house about 18 months ago, and and only just now finishing up on getting everything where we wanted it to be (new bathroom, etc - now done!), I've gone from sitting 4 feet away from a 50 inch TV - to 10 feet away from the same TV...!
In my head, I was thinking either 65 inch or 75 inch TV - but knowing my liking for overkill, I thought 75 (maybe 77?) inch was the way to go. Imagine my surprise when I saw this - and checked out that calculator - only to find that I was absolutely bang on??!! 🙂
I am now considering an 85 inch - just for the overkill factor...!! 😁
Only problem is, my girlfriend is unlikely to go for that - and I'm still trying to convince her that 75 inches is NOT too big...!!! 😂
I might just buy an 85 incher, and tell her it's 77 inches (especially as she only JUST discovered that the measurememt is taken on the diagonal, and NOT on the length - she thought I was gonna upgrade to a 55 inch TV, bless her...!!)..!! 😂

I tried the calculator and I also tried to measure better from sitting on the couch versus when I use chairs and do gaming I’m half the distance closer to my small TV- so it looks like if I sit on the couch they want me to have a 75 inches or better which I imagine is definitely not in my budget I would almost have to sit in my chairs to be OK with 55 inches so 65 would be my best option if I can find it at a good price on the sales this holiday season that’s my opinion I still would like to know yours - thanks
This video is perfect timing. Getting a new gaming set up and going to upgrade from 50in basic. Need to decide if money goes to smaller 65in OLED or bigger QLED. Guess I'll just measure a viewing angle!
I have to get a 75" tv for a new house we're building. It's going in a family room that will have a decent amount of light. We won't be gaming on it. Only streaming Netflix, prime, Disney, etc ... sound will be supplied via built in surround sound. Wanted to be right around $2k on the high end before tax, shipping, etc. But could pay more if it calls for it. Suggestions??? Need to buy like tomorrow ! Thx.

In a normal chair or couch, your eye is at about 42". Mount the TV with the center at 42".
Every time I see designers on HGTV mount a TV above a Fireplace I want to puke. I used to install HT (retired) and always tried to talk my customers out of it.
