Shame to hear that happened to the Palo Cortado, but glad you were able to salvage some. Thanks for the review!

I’ve only had to use coffee filters twice. The first was a 28yo 1977 Bunnaa CS IB where the cork was toasted. I have nothing to compare it to, but I didn’t feel like the filters impacted the oils, flavor etc. But the second time I had to filter was with a Highland Park 15 older bottle style prior to current. The cork was also torched. With this one I swear there seemed to be a sheen left on the filters that I just could not get to filter through. At 43% I wasn’t expecting there to be oiliness but it did seem like something shiny was in the filter. It still tasted like HP 15, so it’s hard to say if there was any real impact though.
The 22 HB 15 was one of my favorite whiskies that year, so I’m really going to need to find a 23 to try!

Commiserations Rob. Typical that the breakage occurs to a "most wanted" bottle. Happened to me but with a Williamson - saved two thirds of the bottle and filtered through muslin. Tasted a bit cardboardy - from the box - but Laphroaig is pretty robust!

Always the best bottle in the box.

Just lost Longrow 18 yo (2022) in the loving hands of postal service. Luckily the shop gave me a refund. It was their last bottle so I had to buy it elsewhere.
It seems that I have to get that Hazelburn 15, been thinking about it for a while now. Enjoying both the previous 15 and 12 a lot.

11:40 whiskey filtering can indeed have a pretty big impact on flavor. Not the same thing, but I was once given a jar of moonshine that was incredibly could & murky. Clearly it was done shoddily, but I didn't have to pay for it. Tasted it anyway, it was very bitter but I could detect the corn deep within however slight. So I poured the shine through activated charcoal in a paper coffee filter, and it cleared it right up. And the flavor was dramatically improved to boot with only a hint of the bitterness. Not perfect but far better. This is a bit extreme but yes it can affect flavor for sure.

Really bad luck Rob. I had never had a broken bottle until last year and it happened with consecutive orders from the same retailer, no fault of the retailer at all as their bottles are always really well
packaged. Bizarrely they were both Springbank bottles, a 15 and a 10 PX cask! Full refund on the 15 and a replacement for the PX so was very fortunate.

Cheapest i found that Springbank 10 palo bottle is 450 US. I don't know, for that price.
I mean I can get Hazelburn 15 2023 Sherry for 250 US. That is the one you both reviewed in this video.
Many of these types of whiskies i have to order online. One place I go to they are normally the cheapest. For these whiskies. Other places i have seen online are either 50 to 100 dollars extra.

Hey Rob, bummer about the bottle, I’m sure I’ve seen illusionists crunch through a whole glass and swallow it, plus I think your stomach lining protects your digestive system from damage via secretions too , so small microscopic shards would go straight through? Great set of reviews too. Cheers

Sorry for the bottle, I’m also a little like you rob paranoid but I’ve seen people crack open the champagne bottles and I’m sure that some people will ingest some micro glass so I would of drank it. Pretty funny to see Jeremy be like yolo. Cheers

Rob, that new released Speymalt 54.6 is mindblowingly good. I bought 3, and have one to spare because I wanna trade it for a springbank. Have you tried this G&M speymatl? Do you think I should just keep it on account of how good it is? If you really want it, do you have anything we can trade a straight value trade for?

Pretty crappy that you didn’t get a refund or a bottle replacement, that doesn’t seem right to me. Great line up of whisky tho, I love that Hazelburn 10 I’d take it over SB10 every time - seems to be more consistent batch to batch. The best iterations of the SB10 are probably a touch better, but there’s so many batches that are worse, so Hazelburn takes it for me. Probably up there with Edradour as one of the best 10yr bottlings on the market.

Too bad it broke, didn't the company who sold it to you replaced it, Rob ? it'll be normal to do so imho....My experience with broken bottle or cork destroyed falling into the bottle is alas also related to good stuff, a full 13 yo Green was lost though, in an airport, a while ago, but filtering wise I did had to filter a rare Compass Box bottle a decade ago but unfortunately I didn't had a lot of experience filtering whisky at that time & I consider I did partly ruin the whisky filtering it like you (coffee filter) and this with ONE passage only ! John Glaser told me it was not recommended to do so & prefers a sieve/strainer with very thin holes, and I adopted this system from then one, except when small glass or small cork bits remain which alas can still pass the sieve, but for me 3/4 times to use the coffee filter is really terrible as you'll get the paper influence (bringing a cardboard note in my case/my bottle) that said for something as characterful as Springbank, maybe it works ? but me I'll never use it several times (esp 2 at a time, no way) unless you're afraid of getting very small glass shards, which I can understand. I advise you maybe to save 5 cl on a wee sample & then maybe ask if a patreon who owns the bottle could send you a sample of the same version to compare the (potential) loss...just my opinion of course..Cheers !

I think you're giving coffee filters too much credit by thinking it changes the flavor or color. Also I don't think any glass particles made it past the paper filter

I hate to see these videos... Simple mortals like 99% of us are inaccessible to Springbank... Although I toured Springbank in 2023 I couldn't get any bottles at the distillery. My first and only Springbank 10yo I bought in the USA... I'm DONE with Springbank where it is not accessible to regular consumers. All Springbank video reviews must be banned 😂😂😂😂 it is like hearing wonders about first class flights, eventhoug you may have the money to buy lots of Springbank, it is not attainable 😢
