Back in the 60's they called Memorial Stadium the World's Largest Outdoor Insane Asylum. This game shows why. It was the loudest stadium in the league when fans had something to cheer for.
The 1990's was when the celebrations went over the top. Guys celebrating a tackle after a 12 yard gain when players should be upset they gave up yards. Offensive Players were celebrating and killing time when they were in the Hurry up. Believe it or not it was actually worse by the late 1990's than it is now. The celebrations were auditions for endorsement deals so the NFL made a rule about taking helmets off on the field.
The last Monday Night game for the "then" Baltimore Colts and it was a great game. The Colts were a staple on Monday Nights and usually played well. The Colts played the 2nd ever Monday Nighter in 1970. They got their horseshoe put right up their yickity yack by the Kansas City Chiefs. They played so poorly no way did anyone knew how the 1970 season would end up. But hey...no one in Baltimore complained. The Colts fortunes were dampened in the preseason when Bert Jones got his shoulder damn near ripped off ob the Silverdome turf and the Colts found out just how important Jones was. Bert in the lineup meant the Colts were usually emotionally high strung, but highly motivated. The season prior, the Colts stood at 9-1 looking like the class of the AFC then, they go to Denver and that game at the time was one of the biggest games ever in Colts history. They playef well, but the turnover bug and the revolvong tackling door dropped down and the Colts lost a golden opportunity to have home field for the playoffs. It sparked a 3 game losing streak as the whole team went into a funk. They lost one of those "how in the hell did that happen" losses to the Lions wjo blocked a punt and ran it back for a game winning TD. Funny because the Colts were trying to run the clock out, but somehow just a few ticks remained. The season was almost lost right then, as it set up a crazy scenerio of playoff possibilities. The Colts weren't in the best shape ad far as getting in. It was a 3 teamer for the division. The Colts were 9-4 and even though they owned some tiebreakers it was only good if they won. The Patriots were 9-4. They had the tiebreakers over the Dolphins, even though they beat the Colts earlier, the Patriots were out if the Dolphins won. They did. So before the Patriots and Colts hit the field the Pats knew they were out. That left the Dolphins who jad the most tie breakers of them all but still needed the Pats to win on order to squeeze in. The Pats got out to a big lead, the Colts came storming back. But they had some serious home cookin' on a obvious Bert Jones fumble, and the Colts escsped. On the only time Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen did a game in Baltimore. Truth br told, the Colts owner Bob Irsay tanked and the fans espescially the seadon ticket holders were pissed and stopped coming, even hanging up on Colts reps calling for renewals. The Colts were once NFL royalty. One of the really true "National" teams, were Americas Teams long before the Cowboys, so it was not good when the Colts were bad. The last bit of glory 5 years later they were (in my Pat Summerall voice) gone! Around here, Colt fan was like...Indianapolis????? Ya gotta be like what the hell? The Colts and Orioles made us proud and there was no better place to be than old Memorial Stadium when they both had it cookin'. BELIEVE ME!!!
It was also the second primetime Baltimore VS. Washington NFL game, airing a year after the first, also at Memorial Stadium. The 2004 and 2008 Ravens-Redskins games were both on Sunday Night Football - the former from Landover on ESPN, and the latter from Baltimore on NBC Since the Ravens began in 1996, they have been more popular and successful in the area than what is now the Washington Football Team. After three straight losing seasons to begin their existence, they have only had four more losing seasons. Washington meanwhile has had a perpetual state of decline since winning Super Bowl 26. In the 28 completed seasons since that game, Washington has only made the playoffs 6 times, and not in consecutive seasons since 1990-92. All three of their playoff wins have come in the wild card round, as the Washington has not won more than 10 games since 1991 (three of their last six playoff appearances have come following winning exactly 10 games). Also, Washington has only had three non-playoff seasons with a winning record, all of them with exactly 7 losses. Washington has a chance to clinch the NFC East Sunday night against Philadelphia. However, they would finish with a 7-9 record. The NFC East is already guaranteed to have their champion finish under .500, and the Giants could potentially win the division at 6-10. Thus, the NFL needs to remove seeding priority for division winners. No way should a 6-10 team be rewarded with a home playoff game.

There were usually 4 “Specials” a year. In 1978 it was three Sunday and one Thursday. In 1979 it was reversed. For three seasons(I think) they also had a Friday Night. Game late in the season when the high school seasons had ended and they could have games that night due to federal law.
@@paulsonj72 Instead of Thursday night games, the NFL should have Friday night West Coast games to accommodate the Friday night lights of high school football
@@howardcosell2022 Actually the NFL can’t have Friday night games once high school football season starts according to federal law. In exchange for an antitrust exemption for the TV package in the 60’s the NFL agreed to not have Friday night games during high school season. They have since gained an exception for one game per year on Friday night during the high school season
220.00 Razor Blades in his (boxing) gloves ISNT THAT ILLEGAL?
Was this before the Ravens were created?
Theisman was WAY better than Kilmer this year.
That's not saying much. Kilmer was 200 years old.
This was back when they thought any QB who hadn't been in the league for five seasons was too inexperienced.
@Randall Denison And what happened?? LOST!!!!!!!!
i remember Theismen getting smashed from behind.
If I have to read one more comment about the fact that there is "no td dances", or "first down celebrations." We know, and when someone keeps posting the same thing on every throwback game posted on UA-cam, it gets to be as obnoxious as endzone celebrations.
@Mr and Mrs. Smith Nobody my friend, but I can't help but be bothered by the "follow the leader" mentality of the majority of people that comment on UA-cam. I read the same comments from different people. Boring!😣😴😴
@DOE John Coming from a nerd named DOE. Cute bub, real cute...
2:15:12 Don Meredith thinks there is a penalty called 'face guarding'. How? How do he think this? Hillbilly done played in the league for years.
Horrible first quarter by the QBs.
Billy Kilmer's last start. Bert Jones 2nd game of the season and the next week would be his last start of the season
