      Gifford was smooth but had a breathtaking propensity for error. Cosell was loveless but, unlike the jock announcers, would never sugarcoat the truth to protect a player’s feelings.

    Chargers WR Wes Chandler was on his way to a phenomenal season in 1982. Of course the strike wiped out 7 games for each team, but Chandler still went over 1,000 yards receiving. Chandler ended the season with a whopping 1,032 yards on 49 catches for an incredible 21.1 per catch average. And by the way, Chandler missed 1 game and thus played in only 8 games in 1982. 1,032 yards 9 TD in only 8 games!

    I got to that game so late it was already 24-0, San Diego, when I got there. I was so sad seeing that scoreboard, but as the Raiders were rallying back, I was starting to get more and more excited, along with everyone else at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
    This was the Raiders first ever Monday Night Home Game at the Coliseum.

    This was the first-ever regular season home game for the Raiders in Los Angeles. It also was the first game after the strike, and there was a lot of fan apathy that developed IMO as a result of the strike that IMO never went away.

  • @LogoAttitude
    @LogoAttitude 3 роки тому +5

    This game was barred from broadcast on KABC-TV in LA, KESQ in Palm Springs, KBAK in Bakersfield (now CBS), and KEYT in Santa Barbara, since it was not sold out.
    However, the nearby San Diego ABC affiliate, KGTV, was compelled to broadcast the game as the Chargers were the road team.
    Thus, there were probably many in the LA area who tried to get a signal from KGTV to watch the game, in defiance of NFL rules.
    This would happen whenever the Raiders played a non-sold out home game against the Chargers on either NBC or ABC during their time in LA.
    In 1986, the NFL stopped giving the Raiders home night games, due to how bad the neighborhood around the Coliseum had become. Having the Raiders play night games at Anaheim Stadium, then used by the Rams, was considered out of the question.

      With regard to Plunkett, many claim it's because of his unimpressive career passing statistics. But I've never bought that argument because (a) Joe Namath's career passer rating is a full two points *below* Plunkett's, and (b) Plunkett led his team to *two* Super Bowl victories, not just one. Plunkett simply wasn't the *media darling* that Namath was. (Nothing against Namath, just calling it like I see it.)

    Dan Fouts was a Bucket Passing Master, meaning his best skill sets as a QB was the fact every pass he made was always on the money or in the bucket basket. But his true value was being an 80s QB whereas the last decade of real pro QBs being Tonka Tuff as this was the hardest aspect of a pro QB as of being tough minded leads to QBs who throw the ball away from being killed( Zach Wilson like QBs of college hype until getting killed in Pros due to being cowardly)

    I love that Raiders-Chargers rivalry from '78 - '83. But it seems like the Raiders had the Chargers' number. The Raiders always won the big ones. Because they had offense and defense. The Chargers only had offense.

      @jadentrez Рік тому

      @@tonyarceneaux286 The funny thing is that in that time Bill Walsh up in SF seemed to have a knack for helping himself to SD and LA players. He shored up his defense with Big Hands Johnson, Fred Dean, as well as Hacksaw Reynolds and then scooped up Wendell Tyler from the Rams to bolster his running game. And the 9ers went on to win Super Bowls while both the Chargers and Rams languished as also-rans.

      It was blacked out as would most Raider games. I suspect one reason the Raiders never drew well at the LA Coliseum was the fact their first home game (which THIS game was) came after the strike that year and the Lakers had already taken their foothold. LA has proven to be a Laker town first for 40 years now and the one city where the NBA trumps the NFL.

    • @philliptesoro908

      @@WaltGekko Given the fact that the "Mausoleum" had a capacity of about 93,000 in those days, even with big crowds that would normally fill a stadium, the Raiders couldn't get the sellout needed by the Thursday before the weekend to lift the black out the NFL required. It was tough for Raider fans. as we even had a couple playoff games blacked out (Jan 1, 1984 vs the Steelers and the following week versus the Seahawks on Jan 8th). Both games had over 90k in attendance but didn't sell out by the previous Thursday.

      @@philliptesoro908 Al Davis was a fool to move there! He saw $$$, assuming they'd sell out the huge place. But he forgot that the Rams rarely sold out, so they put temporary seats in to shorten the field, and bring capacity down to 63,000. Even now, I think it's a stupid idea for L.A. to have two football and basketball teams.

    This is the Raider's first season in LA-the beginning of a love affair with the them by the gangs of LA. The Coliseum was never lit up appropriately for the area that it was in. (ghetto) Not only the inferior lighting for the playing field, but for the swaths of total darkness in many parts of the stadium, with fans petrified of the thug element that would breach the gates after halftime, and wreak havoc throughout the stadium. With the stadium being built in the 20's, naturally they set aside parking for the era's of the 20, 30' and 40's, which was woefully inadequate, as LA would become the biggest automobile market in the world. Because of such, much of the paying patrons for games, were forced into the surrounding ghetto to park, and needless to say, there was no shortage of crime upon them. It's to bad, as the Colisseum is a legendary venue, that of course hosted two editions of the summer Olympics, not to mention being the home field for the USC Trojans. Still, the whole are need to be lit up like the sun at night, replete with serious law enforcement patrols round the clock.
