  • Track B3 from the rare Japan only LP compilation of Edison Lighthouse's "Greatest Hits Featuring: Tony Burrows," featuring a somewhat rare recording from the group--and no, you're not hearing double. Although lead singer Tony Burrows had performed on the original White Plains version of the mega hit "My Baby Loves Lovin'," he actually only sang co-lead on the choruses with Ricky Wolff. Here, Burrows takes full lead allowing us the chance to hear him fully on this great track by Roger Cook & Roger Greenaway. Produced by Tony Macaulay, this appears to be from sessions with the original group of Stuart Edwards on lead guitar, Dave Taylor on bass, Ray Dorey on rhythm guitar and George Weyman on drums. Originally released as a Japan only single in 1971; produced by Tony Macaulay for Mustard Record Productions & Bell Records.

Tony Burrows was the Where's Waldo of music in the early 70's.

I think the guys who toured Australia in 1973 were incredible. They are the so called session musos but they deserve the accolades they are great looking too

It's a cover version of My Baby Loves Lovin by Edison Lighthouse released in Japan in 1971. The original White Plains version released in January 1970 features Ricky Wolff on lead vocals. Tony was one of the backing voices on the chorus. Tony also did his solo version under his own name.

Sorry, Tom. It's overgeneralization. White Plains and Edison Lighthouse are definitely different bands, not the same group under different names. Just because Tony Burrows was once with White Plains and Edison Lighthouse doesn't mean they are altogether the same members. White Plains was formerly called the Flower Pot Men formed in 1967 and changed their name to White Plains before releasing the hit single "My Baby Loves Lovin'' in January 1970. The original members of White Plains are Ricky Wolff (the lead singer of the original hit), Pete Nelson, Tony Burrows, Robin Shaw, Robin Box and Roger Hills, with Producers Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway.
The original members of Edison Lighthouse are Tony Burrows (the lead singer of this cover version and Love Grows), Ray Dorey, Stuart Edwards, George Weyman and Dave Taylor, with Producers Tony Macaulay.

I just heard a cover by Elton John. Cook and Greenway were busy guys back then. At least on my side of the Pond(US) we had our version of multiple one hit wonders. Ron Dante. (He sang lead on the Archies Sugar Sugar. He sang lead on the Cufflinks Tracy.

I prefer this cover version by Edison Lighthouse, especially the strings and guitar solos.
Ricky Wolff has a deeper voice than Tony Burrows, and this version, sung by Tony Burrows does the song more justice.

It's the White Plains producers Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook who picked Ricky Wolff to sing the lead vocal. He doesn't let them down because the White Plains version is the only international mega hit.

White Plains wasn't a studio group of session musicians but an actual band. White Plains has cleared it up in the 1970 NME interview. According to an article of NME in 5 December 1970 : "The facts, the group is eager to explain, are that Tony Burrows did not sing lead on their first single, "My Baby Loves Lovin'," and that the line-up now on the road is not an outfit hurriedly created around Shaw and Peter Nelson but the actual group which cut the single. Also that none of them are known as regular session men."
