  • Today, for the first time in literally decades, I was back on Capitol Hill walking around the House Office Buildings where I used to work. I managed to check in on my old offices (the physical rooms where I used to work) but other than that most things have changed a bit. I did take a few tunnels between the office buildings, and managed to show you the Congressman's subway train that runs to the US Capitol. We also saw a number of motorcades zipping around downtown, such as the Dutch PM Mark Rutte who was in town visiting Biden, along with a look at one of the relics of the George Floyd protests next to the White House finally being repaired after a couple years.

My daughter and I got a tour of the Capitol about 10 years ago. I arranged it through my Congressman. We met him at his office and a college intern (it was summer) took us around . It was great getting a behind the scenes eye view. We got to ride on the subway, has a great presentation in Statuary Hall and a chance to sit in the Balcony in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Anyone can request a tour by calling their Representative. I highly encourage doing it if you visit Washington, DC.

When I worked there the doors were always open, but maybe after 9/11 and covid they switched to closed doors (they were unlocked when I went into the offices). There is NOT a lot of collaboration with neighbors, well, let me rephrase that--there is not a lot of legislative collaboration since you are placed almost at random with people next to you (lottery and seniority) but there is social collaboration. You meet folks in the hallways from next door and generally most people in a hallway know their neighbors and even hang out together.

There are other tunnels that connect the three Senate office buildings to the Capitol, and four of the five House office buildings are connected by tunnel as well. The only House office building that isn't connected by tunnel is the Ford House Office Building,

You'd be shocked what you can find in the trash. When we moved into a new office on Capitol Hill (Members of Congress move offices every couple of years) there was this huge safe in the Congressman's office but the former occupant didn't tell us the combination. It sat there for a couple a years until one day I was chatting with one of the maintenance guys and mentioned we had this locked safe we couldn't get in and he's like "we have a guy for that". They come up, spent about 10 minutes and unlocked it. Inside it was filled with classified documents, I mean like 4 feet of them. The previous office holder was a high-ranking defense committee member and there was all this stuff he just left. We called the military liaison and they were like 'ok, we'll come get it' thinking it was just some random document, but when got up there and found 4 feet of documents he basically freaked out and had to call his superiors to come and deal with it.
