    Notes:
    Leg/guitar elevated a bit
Neck out forward a little bit - gives room to work and allows arm to tuck in at elbow
Elbow tucked in towards ribs - rotates your hand and fingers towards the side - avoids knuckles - better edge
    Thumb behind the index finger
Keep fingers close to the frets
    Finesse over force
    Don't chase perfection
5th string barre chords - first string muted = fine
Style and body of the guitar can make a difference - lower action - thinner gauge
(Acoustic) Martin Flexible Core SP strings - 11s
    (Electric) GHS Boomers
    Another great lesson! 😁

Steve is a great teacher. I’ve had great success with his guitarzoom program until I developed liver cancer…then he allowed me to leave his program with a complete refund and a wish for good health. The surgery was a success and I’m back watching and learning to play guitar. Thanks Steve. And he’s hella good looking, especially when he’s teaching!

I've struggled for a long time with barre chords. I could do them, but not cleanly enough fast enough for them to be functionally useable. The strings you recommended here have been the absolute difference maker for me -- all this time I thought the problem was me, while it was my gear not being right for me. Thank you -- I can't even begin to tell you how satisfying it was to pick up my guitar, fret a barre chord, and have it feel almost effortless for the first time. I feel like so many doors have been opened on my playing potential just from this one small change. Thanks again.

Great content again, Steve. Thank you. A hint I was given, was to place the pad of the finger on the fret wire and roll it on to the bony part.

Hey, Steve. I just want to say that your encouragement here really helped me push through and keep going with this. When you shared that you had frustration early on and that you were thinking about giving up (and maybe not continuing with guitar) but then pushed through, that was a big help to me. Also the idea to 'give yourself a break.' I have been doing a little bit of this each day & a lot of them are terrible, but I can also tell it's getting closer. THANK YOU. Actually feeling like this is possible & excited that one day I might be able to do it ...

I would suggest that everyone TRY placing the guitar in the 'Classical' position ....i.e. on the LEFT leg. I found that playing barre chords was immensely easier with little to no pain except perhaps at the 12th fret. I started to play the guitar in this position always, as it does not affect playing the normal open chords at all. Try it!

P.S. I played guitar for years and years resting the guitar on my right leg. Long story short, after I started playing more regularly, I developed a pretty serious case of tendonitis in my left forearm. I had to stop playing for a while because of it.
After the pain started to go away, I tried playing normally, and the tendonitis started coming back. Finally, I decided to try resting my guitar (and bass) on my left leg... and the tendonitis has not come back yet.
Turns out, with my guitar on my right leg, I was putting my left arm in an awkward position, and I didn't even realize it. Shifting my guitar to my left leg helped me play much more comfortably.
Just wanted to share. :-) -- Mike

That does work, until you have to stand to play. So when it comes to something I find difficult (like barre chords - super small hands), I suck it up, strap on the guitar, stand up and practice. If I can play it while sitting, then show up to play and have to stand and then struggle with something I thought I had down, well, not so good.

Thanks Steve. You are a good teacher. Dedinitely.
Right now, I have a stabilizer wrapped around my left rist and thumb, because I managed to do all the wrong things and got a thumb tendonitis. But the intersting part is that I used to be able to play barre chords :-) and was «corrected» by someone who claimed to know. I suppose picking your teacher is also important in learning to play the guitar (or learning anything, really).

    • @stinemusiclessons
      @stinemusiclessons  3 роки тому +1

Ouch! Make sure to follow your doctor's instructions, and don't put any pressure on those tendons, if you can avoid it.
Sometimes, all you can do with injuries like that is to let them heal. So for now, just rest and follow your doctor's instructions. (Can't stress that enough. :-) )
When you start to play again, make sure to stretch properly every time you play. Here's some exercises Steve recommends that you should check out:
      ua-cam.com/video/qYJZsk3cNLc/v-deo.html
Regarding the person who "corrected" you with your barre chord technique, I'm sure they meant to help. It's possible that whatever they're doing works for them just fine, because of the size, shape, and flexibility of their hands, and so on... but for whatever reason, it didn't work for you the same way.
As Steve always says, stay positive, and try to avoid doing the things that caused the tendonitis.
For me personally, I struggled with pretty severe tendonitis a few years ago. I was playing bass in a 2-piece band, and after a few months of long practice sessions and playing shows semi-regularly on electric bass, then going home and playing acoustic for fun, my left (fretting hand) elbow felt like it was going to snap. And I just had to quit for a while to recover.
After the pain went away - I totally quit playing for at least a couple of weeks - when I started to play again, the pain started coming back. So, I paid close attention to when and why I started feeling strain in my tendons.
I figured out that the way I was holding my guitar was causing my left hand to be put in an awkward position. And when I put my left hand in an awkward position, then tightened my tendons... that was what was causing my tendonitis.
I decided to try something. Instead of resting my guitar (or bass) on my right thigh when I played, I moved it over to my left thigh. Doing this pushed my left arm out further away from my body, and doing that gave my left arm more freedom to move without getting into an awkward position.
And I've been playing since then with no problems. All it took was moving my guitar from my right thigh to my left thigh.
So, when you start to play again, pay close attention to how your hand feels. You might be able to find a simple change that can help avoid problems in the future.
      Hope this helps! :-)

Thank you very much for your barre chord tips !!! :) I am a beginner guitarist who is trying to get better who would appreciate a gentle introduction to barre chords ! Even though I can’t do full 6 string barre chords because of my rather short small fingers and small hands and short arms I still want to try out partial barre chords/mini barre chords that involve barring only the first 2 - 4 strings in the guitar on the same fret with my finger ! Making things a lot easier for me ! Thanks heaps for your help ! Very much appreciated ! :) I shall keep these tips in mind when I am actually practicing. And to get further professional advice on barre chords and other things I shall pay for professional guitar lessons :) from mr Ryan McDonald kiwi from NEW ZEALAND :)

    Thanks

    • @stinemusiclessons
      @stinemusiclessons  3 роки тому

Thanks for the kind words, Jasper! To answer your question, barre chords work the same way as open chords in chord progressions. Just find the root note for the chord you're looking for, and play the barre chord.
For example, to play a G - C - D chord progression, you can play G as a 6th string barre chord, like this:
      e - - - - - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
      B - - - - - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
      G - - - - - 4- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
      D - - - - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
      A - - - - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
      E - - - - - 3- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
...then play C and D as 5th string barre chords:
      e - - - - -x- - - - - - x- - - - - - - - - - -
      B - - - - -5- - - - - -7 - - - - - - - - - - -
      G - - - - -5 - - - - - 7- - - - - - - - - - -
      D - - - - -5- - - - - -7- - - - - - - - - - -
      A - - - - -3 - - - - - 5- - - - - - - - - - -
      E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
      Hope this helps! :-)

Hi Steve, I'm learning to play and found you as the best UA-cam teacher so thank you very much. I bought a Yamaha F310 acoustic guitar, does every brand new acoustic guitar needs to set-up first? Like calibrating the thrust and the bridge to lower the action?(saw some DIY videos) Because no matter how hard I press some strings especially those near the nut, it doesn't sound well, not sure if because I'm new or if setting up brand new guitar to play easier is really necessary. Thank you!

What do you think about people saying put it on your left knee only because if you stand up with a strap that's the same position.

This is how I play any guitar while seated. Definitely mostly prevalent in the classically trained crowd, but this is ultimately a preference thing for me, purely for the sake of comfort and natural hand positioning, regardless of how closely it might translate to an upright stance. This all is not to be confused with poor posture and technique, of course, which he covers quite well as per usual.

Steve, I tend to miss your live shows...I'm in Malta....time zones! I've got huge hands....totally huge. You can see them from space :). Not fat, just big. Had an issue with buzzing on e when barring the 3 strings with ring finger in the a shape barre chord. Eventually figured out that by pushing my index finger further up, it lifted the bend on my ring finger enough to stop the buzzing. I'm still slow transitioning between barre chords etc but they sound way better. Do you think that playing songs with barre chords in is a good and more enjoyable way to practice?

Why does my joint at the base of my left pointer finger of my fretting hand get too painful to play after a week or so? No breaks, no soft tissue damage and have even taken a year off, tried rehab exercises (not guitar-specific). I stretch, warm-up, move between lead, barres, opens, etc. Rheumatologists and others say they don’t know-but they have no guitar experience/knowledge. Any recommendations? I own and run a studio, so I have a lot of guitars to move between, but I mostly use a PRS electric to make it easier on my left hand. It hurts on the outside- between my pointer and thumb on the big pointer knuckle.
