Paint Color Blocks: A Beginner Friendly Abstract Watercolor Project!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Join me to paint a colour field painting. Colour Field painting was developed from the 1950s and 60s, an offshoot of abstract expressionism. Its proponents left behind any kind of representation in favour of paintings where colour took centre stage. Colour field painters would often create large canvases, in simple blocks, often just one or two. This is my take on the theme, but I've gone with a small scale painting in watercolour and used quite a few blocks of colour.
This project is part of my season of art tutorials themed around drawing, painting and printing patterns. These projects are for personal use only. Please do not sell any work copied directly from this tutorial and please credit me if you post work online that you've made from following this tutorial or using my downloadable line work.

Love your channel! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Lovely and calming. I'm not great at brush control for straight edges...but I stil enjoy the process and the effect.
Thanks! I think wonky edges look great with this type of thing :)
This series is just what I need. It will help me with water and pigment control and to learn more about the paints I have. I have created a playlist that I call "Shapes Watercolor Challenge by Lou Davis" and will add your videos to that. Thanks so much!
Enjoyed this as with most of your compositions 🙂
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, I really enjoyed that. As a novice painter who is still trying to determine which I enjoy more, painting pictures or just playing with paint and other supplies, an exercise like this really appeals to me. It’s both, really. I hope to see more like this from you and will go look for the other videos you mentioned.
Thanks, so glad you enjoyed it! I hope it inspires you to keep painting!
You just put my dilemma into words! I love the playing part, not necessarily the picture painting part!
I love this! Your style is inspiring for me as a new learner of watercolor.
Thank you so much 😀
I'm a bit new to watercolor - wish I had more time for it! - and this exercise is so fun! I feel like I can make something that looks "finished," while just learning brush and water control.
I took my first piece to a local "art club for grown-ups," and had the nerve to show it even though there were some serious watercolorists there. The lovely folks in the group were so supportive, confirming that my strength (thus far) is in choosing color palettes. Thanks for the inspiration, Lou!
I loved this so much, I stretched it out over a few days, just to savor painting it. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Just discovered your channel. AT LAST, someone who keeps things really simple and sets intersting and achievable tasks for beginners. Great pace and really helpful tips. Thank you 😊
Thank you - Glad you like them!
This turned out really lovely ❤ I'm so excited for this new series, as I've always enjoyed your tutorials which are more pattern / abstract based! I'm going to try this today, but the ocd in me requires drawn grids first 😂❤
I'll be doing some grids for future paintings - sometimes I like to just go for it though!
What a great tutorial! So relaxing and simple. I am looking forward to the next 7 more. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I’m new at your channel. You art is amazing and you’ve reignited my passion for watercolors! Can’t wait to binge watch all your videos!
I absolutely love this Lou. I'm having some friends over next week who are keen to try watercolours for the first time, I'm going to show them this video and hopefully they'll all follow along with you. Thankyou for what you do ❤
Thanks so much, I really hope you have fun painting with your friends!
Had a play this morning….was useful in understanding more about how watercolour works and it was so relaxing as there had no expectation as to what it should look like.
I learnt the importance of thinking about my palate and making enough paint! Thank you for the inspiration ❤
You're welcome, glad it was helpful!
I love it! I see lots of tutorials on YT but your ideas and tutorials are the first ones that I really want to try! Thank you for your clear explanations. You let me see, in a calming and lovely way, what I can do with watercolor, gold paints and black pen. Thank you so much for all your ideas, video's and beautiful creations! Thank you, dear Lou!! Lots of love from The Netherlands! Regards from Petra 💕
Thanks so much, I'm really glad you're enjoying these! I hope you'll continue to feel inspired!
I can’t draw but I can do squares so this is right up my alley. Love it 👍👍
Yay! You’re back! Hope you are feeling better. Interesting and fun tutorial! Thanks!
Thank you! Feeling loads better now thanks :)
This is the perfect project to get me back playing with paint again, it's lovely, but looks relaxing to do. Thanks for sharing it with us! ♥
Thanks so much 😊
TFS! What a great idea & details. I asked a # of friends & family to give me their 4 favorite colors in order. This will be a great way to apply that info when I make card fronts for them -- I know ahead of time they will like them because I use their favorite colors! :-)
Awesome! Thank you!
Such a great video. How lucky I am to have stumbled upon your channel.❤ thank u for making this.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
