  • Join me every Tuesday during Autumn for a technical art chat while I work in my sketchbook. In this video I'm choosing the colours I'll use for this week's art project. I choose the base colours based on what I want to paint, try some colour mixes from those paints, and show how to mix similar colours if you have a smaller palette to choose from.
    SUPPLIES
The paints I used today are all from Winsor and Newton. The first selection are their professional watercolour range.

The last palette I show is the Cotman Sketchers Set. There seem to be a few versions of this set with slightly different pan selections. The one I have has several colours different to this set, but this is very similar.

I am 68 this year. Tried to start water colour during Covid just through UA-cam videos. Would love to be able to attend an art class….. Thank you for this. First video I’ve seen on actual colour mixing. Very helpful!

It's incredible how interesting colour mixing is. I would have used some different choices so I love watching other people mix as it gives me more ideas.

Your Prussian Blue is very turquoise leaning! Is it the same in real life? Or is it an artefact of the white balance?

Looking closely at the video on my screen and the real thing, I would say the swatch in the palette looks about right but the swatch on the paper looks slightly more turquoise than in real life. The studio lighting always skews green and I compensate in post, so maybe an artefact of the colour grading.

@@LouDavis Thanks! I also have the same issue with photographing paintings for Instagram. I always have to make the photos less green or less blue.
