    Ahh, back when Japan didn’t follow some cookie cutter pattern for making cars. The dash and gauges moving with the steering wheel is awesome. You know I made it to the end, but I’m too broke to be a patreon. I will enjoy what I think the hidden video would look like in my mind. :)

      Hahaha, I understand. You a broke UA-camr struggling to build cars too. Your view still helps. :P
      It was really crazy you could actually move the wheel and gauges or the entire dash assembly all together. I do love how kooky and different this really is though. Thanks!

    Owned brand new 1988 XT GL without turbo or AWD. This was an awesome car. We could drive 600 plus miles on one tank of gas (we often did this). Car was great in snow even though it was front wheel drive. We would pass jeeps in storms and not slip at all. Everybody would notice this car because it looked like a space ship. No back seat (cargo Area) but we did carry 3 kids back there often anyway. Huge trunk, good ground clearance, rode really well, no mechanical issues, fun to drive and cornered very well. Drove it for five years and put 97,000 miles on it. A week after our final payment on car, my wife was hit by a 6000 lb pickup truck from behind at 45mpg while she was fully stopped at a stop sign. The safety of this car saved my wifes life (she suffered whiplash symptons for a year). The collision pushed the trunk up to front seat but cabin mostly stayed intact. My wife walked away from wreck. Loved that car but of course it was totalled. Would love to find one today but theres not many left.

    I was very lucky to own a 1989 XT 6 pearl white mint condition Subaru the first H6 Subaru ever made, came with air ride premium stereo with manual equalizer onboard trip calculator digital laser gauge pop-up lights and a pop-up light lock captain's chair it was a luxury car of its time super BA. I can still hear the original beeps and ting/ring noises before they discontinued and upgrade to the Legacy. 1st Coolest car I ever owned but not nearly as fast as my 74' 260z

      Daaang. Really sounds like an awesome memorable car. I would love to find one in good shape with a stick shift. It's simply not the same as any other car when you combine all its features. Not like today when every car on the market is cookie cutter. 260z is also an excellent choice!

      @@802Garage I own the car for my senior year of high school and a year after that working for a tire lube shop, I had to drive to work about 35-40 a little bit later in the morning I typically work at 9, I picked up a shift for the 7 a.m. and I was approaching a particular roundabout in the small town where I lived. Everybody with a brain knows that if two people go to the roundabout it's the person on the right that goes first, apparently the lady on the left of me didn't get the memo so when I started to go and got up to speed she went up at the same time I didn't realize until she was right in front of me try to blame it on me but after admitting to the officer that we both got there at the same time and I went first because I was on the right she ended up getting the ticket the only problem is it completely wrecked my car. The xt6 has a far-forward setting engine which makes it extremely vulnerable to front-end collisions it was funny because her car was a Subaru Outback 2001 and I completely smashed her driver and passenger door to the point where she couldn't get out but in the process I jammed my radiator and oil cooler into my engine housing and push the engine back off the mounts and crush the left side driver wheel well in the end I'm the one that got hit with the dirty Stick. I had the car tarped in the front yard because I was taking Parts off of it I had found an another xc6 but it was a 4-speed automatic and I needed particular parts and some Tweakers are yokels or whatever came and towed my car away at night took it right off the propertyif you can believe it lol can't make this stuff up

    My father had one of these when I was a kid. It was a 1991 automatic rwd when he bought it but swapped the trans for a manual awd later on. He fried the computer because he fucked the wirering somewhere and even though he ha a spare one, he never had the time to fix it. It had been sitting, sometimes outside, sometimes in a garage, for about 15 years untill we moved out to a smaller house with no garage and keepimg in on the land was out of the question. He sold it for 800$ in 2019. If I had the space and living on my own back in the day, I would've bought it and probably just swaped the motor or something. I'm glad to see it runing in this video because I was too young to remember seeing it in real life

      Wow that's a cool and sad story. I absolutely would have bought it for $800 if it wasn't super rusty, hahaha. Very cool cars, quite rare. Sorry you didn't get to keep it yourself! I would have swapped a more modern engine in as well. Thanks for sharing.

    I owned one of these back in the day. My wife called it her Spaceship. It was automatic though, with AWD. Drove it 5 years with zero problems, then hot rid of it before all the weird high tech stuff started to go bad. I rarely saw them then and almost never see them now.

      @@802Garage My main concern was the computer controlled automatic height adjusting air suspension, not used on any other model. And the AWD electronically controlled transmission. I was foreseeing huge repair bills down the road and didn't want to own it when that happened. I think it was beginning to develop head gasket problems too.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  5 років тому +1

      Oh yeah the air suspension is famous for going out. I don't think it was usually the electronics though, just leaks. But yeah then it was crazy expensive to fix. Most people put in modified Legacy suspension after that I guess. Glad you had fun with it and then didn't have to deal with the problems!

    Basically this is the precursor to the Subaru SVX we all know and kinda love for it odd shape and that sweet H6 engine.
    and damn for a rust bucket, it has a 5 speed manual
    and pop up headlights like the AE86 since both the AE86 and this are from the same era of cars
    my mind was thinking of a legacy kind of Subaru but this is a rare find.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  5 років тому +1

      Yeah absolutely the daddy of the SVX. The SVX basically took everything from this and improved it, toning down the quirk just a bit.
      5 speed, pop ups, coupe, AWD, 6 cylinder. Not a lot of cars that check all of those boxes for sure. Add a turbo and you have something really special.
      Yeah the more Legacy like evolution of this would be the Subaru RX which was made at the same time. I want an RX turbo so bad. Super rare too.

      legit asking, what makes them a nightmare? blow head gaskets quick etc? hard to work on?

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  5 років тому +1

      I think the 4 cylinder XT especially was known for some electronics issues as well as fairly frequent head gasket failure. The turbo engine probably had a mess of vacuum hoses too. I've heard of far fewer problems with the 6 cylinder XT6.
      Also apparently some small maintenance items like axles were a pain on these cars. Plus since they weren't nearly as common as American or other Japanese cars of the time, I'm sure parts were more expensive and harder to get.
      Looking at one now it would be easy AF to maintain given all the space to work on it and simple parts.

    i live with my grandmother who has an 87 GL XT thats been sitting for at least 12 years and im wanting to restore it.
    it ran when we it was parked but some animals moved in to the hood.
    very little rust just worried about the electronics and i cant seem to find any information about restoring these online are there any tips or advice you could spare?

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  5 років тому +1

      Wow I'm jealous! Honestly there is very little information on restoring them and parts availability is sparse. The best advice I can give is they are actually quite simple cars to work on, other than the dash components perhaps. Just take everything one step at a time and it's all fixable. If you need spare parts, try checking other models by Subaru from the same years range as the XT and see if similar parts are available. Certain electronic, engine, and suspension components can be borrowed from other models and made to work. Best of luck!

      @@802Garage wow what a fast response i appreciate the advice, im glad to hear its relatively easy to work on, it makes me feel a little less nervous about taking it on haha.
      well first step is popping the hood (broken release cable) and analyzing the damage, thanks again and ill try to document the process as to help others in the future :)

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  5 років тому

      Should be able to pop the hood with some decent screwdriver and pick work. May be able to reach the cable behind the grill with some long needle nose. You'll likely need to clean the gas tank so check that out too. I'd imagine there's a fuel pump access door in the back. No problem on the quick response! Get notifications on my phone. Def looking forward to seeing you work on your car. Let me know when you make progress please. :)

      Trust me, I wish I could have! It was in Colorado and I live in Vermont. Plus I was broke and on a long road trip. The car was fairly clean, but it did have some rust issues as well as a few mechanical problems and interior issues with dash pieces. Nothing I couldn't have fixed, I'm just saying it wasn't a phenomenal example. Someone else in the comments did end up buying the car! Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Do u know how to work on this car because I’m lookin at one and it cranks over almost starts but it doesn’t and it’s super close

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  5 років тому +1

      Well first I would recommend going through the typical diagnostic process of making sure you have fuel pressure, unrestricted airflow, and spark. Would also be worth doing a compression test just to make sure that isn't an issue causing it not to fire. Otherwise, I might suspect the distributor or something in the ignition system such as an ignition coil. Even if you have spark, it may be too weak or inconsistent. Apparently, those old distributors used some sort of photo electric sensor to get crank angle, and if it is dirty inside of the distributor body, that may cause an issue as well. I'm certainly no expert in working on these cars, but through a series of basic steps you may be able to work out what is wrong with it. Good luck! Let me know if you find out.
