It's totally different from any car I've been in TBH. Obviously not overall materials or use, but just ever design feature. The ball and socket shifter, the asymmetrical steering wheel, the double adjustable dash and column, the wing pods for controls, the notch by the door mirrors, the wrap around back windshield. It's so damned cool.
Does anyone know when this video was made? I bought this exact car (the only one I know of in Colorado with a white spoiler on the trunk) in January 2019, and then yesterday I found this video by happenstance. Blew me away to see "MY" XT6 on UA-cam. 😆🤩
Congratulations I'm very jealous of your purchase! I can tell you exactly when the video was made when I get home tomorrow night. It was almost definitely in October of last year though.
The video was filmed October 11th, 2018! So you bought it just 3 months after I drove it. Very cool. I'd love to see it again someday if you fix it up!
I clicked on this thing to reply to your comment in the first thing I hear is the squeaky belt in the beginning of video mine sounds just like that I love it
Honestly not that hard other than the air suspension and if you have the digital dash. Just look at that engine bay! Pretty clean and bare with lots of room.

Def coming soon. TBH I've been spending hours a day just cleaning the garage now it's not so cold. People are gonna be amazed the difference. Winter was just killer. Still have 3 ft of snow. Thanks though! I really appreciate the comment. I know it's not a perfect solution and I'm def not saying you have to, but I do also have 7 vids on Patreon right now and I'll be releasing another one that I may make publicly available in the next few days. $3 you could watch them all haha. I would just give links, but if I do it for one person I'd feel like I was betraying the patrons. :P
Hahaha, I think Doug Demuro may have covered them once. :P But yeah definitely a different approach to an interior. It all still made sense though. To me, Subaru has rarely done something that doesn't make sense.
Haha yeah I feel a lot of us have unrealistic dream cars to start out. This one is pretty attainable! The NSX used to be my attainable dream car, but prices are through the roof.
subaru boxer 6 cars are quite underrated...this car seems to be the car that came before the SVX, it was probably the flagship grand tourer of the car lineup...I am actually 99,9 % sure it was... Many cars in the 80' s were crazy and had strange features...wait, is that a manual? really? Looks like an automatic design-wise... Thank you for this review...I can see you have a genuine interest in cars!
Yeah I think this engine was quite a bit more reliable than the 4 cylinder in the XT as well. It was definitely the forerunner for the SVX and the highest spec car at the time for Subaru overall. Yep, it's really a manual! Love how they used the pilots joystick grip for a manual shifter. It was surprisingly pleasant to use. I love the quirky interior on this one. I def love cars, especially Japanese and Subaru! Thanks a ton for watching and commenting.

100% on board with you there. Def getting hard to find in good shape. At least the interior and back glass on this one were good too. Other than some dash issues.
You know how it goes. Some things on old cars are dead simple and some are so damned complex. My 1993 Impreza is basically the sweet spot for simplicity and reliability with still modern electronic controls for the engine.

It is literally just called an XT6. They also had a 4 cylinder model called the XT. I do love the MR2 looking front end. More parodies are a possibility for the future. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting.
@@andrew.the.one1 Pretty typical, especially for the age. If I was restoring one I'd probably put in some coilovers for a later Subaru and just redrill the mounting holes in the appropriate pattern. I drove the piss out of one of these XT6's about 1996. It was cherry. Great car to drive. Clicky/notchy trans, nimble handling, decent torque curve. Loved it.
I was honestly surprised how smooth the shifter was in this one. But yeah a positive notchy feel. Def understeered, but I'm sure proper suspension and tires would do wonders. What happened to yours?
Yeah I had a bunch of the old 900's and a couple 9000's. They were amazing cars and I'd love to have one with a solid body to restore. Especially an SPG.

Such a cool rare car! The old junk yard we went to used to have one of these back with the other imports, these cars were really bad about rust around here.
A lot of people haven't. Super cool though! If you are into weird cars. Pop ups and a coupe though, so automatically cool. Actually now that I think about it, there are very few AWD coupes with pop ups. Basically DSM, the 3000GT VR4, Celica All-Trac, and then a bunch of Subarus. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but you get the point.

Was looking enough to ride around one as kid, thought the digital dash was coolest thing ever, used to free hand draw it a lot, never was old enough to drive it though.
Always been one of my fav oddballs. I do love Subaru in general. Shame so many of them have already been thrown away due to small issues people don't want to fix like axles or air suspension.
Hi What happened to the car, I could not find any more videos for it, cool to see more, i had one of this as mi first car, never had other one like it felt like airplane inside
I have this things that car it has air ride also the one I have does and I'm having problem with it where can I find a OBD1 machine I'm having some trouble with it I really like someone's advice if you could message me back and maybe put me in touch with someone thanks
I don't know anyone specific to direct you to. What I can tell you is that you should be able to read check engine codes by connecting some jumpers under the dash below the steering wheel and counting the blinks of the check engine light. Try looking up the procedure for OBDI Subarus.
I love mine help me fix it it's stalling new alternator new battery when I get driving it doesn't want to get above like 25 35 miles an hour like its starving for fuel or something
First thing I would do is spark plugs. Fuel filter too. Very often spark issues are overlooked. Since it's a distributor too a cap and rotor would be good if available. This forum post also has a lot of info. Apparently the injector harness can be an issue. www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/170528-er27-inherent-issues-weak-points/
I do not, sorry. I do have the original throttle from my 4A-GE which will probably not be used, but it would be difficult to part out right now. Good luck with the engine build, that's really awesome! Gonna make any vids? Also check out the channel "driving 4 answers" if you haven't.
ow and the xt6 had a metal frame unlike most cars and such and mine has gone over 210,000 miles and i will say doesnt look a pretty as that one but it still runs and they are great cars just pane in the but to work on but yea are fun and such and one cool think is they actually will take some damage and still run for in 2017 i was going to work and some people didnt pay attention of where there Big hunting dogs for boars were and i was going 75 mph and hit the dogs by accident of them being there sides to me and hit one dead center of car and the other dogs hind legs but after changing out the oil pump, timing belts, and a few other things it is still running and such and yea that night was not a good night for me for i love animals and i really didnt have the money to fix it but i got it done luckily so yea.
What do you mean by metal frame? You mean it is body on frame and not unibody? that is an unfortunate story about the dogs, but I'm glad you and the car ended up ok.
That steering wheel is nuts! Wish you had more time to go into the controls on the steering wheel. But what a neat car for only 1K and little rust for how old it is.
Yeah super bizarre to have it so asymmetrical. It's fairly rusty, but yeah would def be worse if it lived in VT. I still want it, hah. The controls are amazing.
It's interesting to see which cars are becoming classic today. If I could have anything, it would need to be quirky and weird like this to stand out from the bought rich-guy fare at car shows
Totally feel you on that. I really prefer unique and adventurous cars to just money thrown at a manufacturer. I can't get over how cool that back glass is. Plus the shifter is just tops.
There’s turboed 1989 Subaru rx with 86,000 miles on it on Craigslist in New Hampshire for sale and I really want it. not the same car but it’s pretty damn close.
Yeah so that is the XT and this is the XT6. we also had the four cylinder and the four cylinder turbo, but this is basically the later model. I would still absolutely love to have a 4-cylinder turbo stick shift with the digital dash, but that is a true unicorn.
I was born just before they stopped making them. Yeah, this one has seen some neglect. Interior in good shape at least except some controls! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I hope to collect one or two eventually. Really want a whole storage shed of just old Subarus someday. That's annoying, but thank you for doing so! New vids soon.
Basically this is the precursor to the Subaru SVX we all know and kinda love for it odd shape and that sweet H6 engine. and damn for a rust bucket, it has a 5 speed manual and pop up headlights like the AE86 since both the AE86 and this are from the same era of cars my mind was thinking of a legacy kind of Subaru but this is a rare find.
Yeah absolutely the daddy of the SVX. The SVX basically took everything from this and improved it, toning down the quirk just a bit. 5 speed, pop ups, coupe, AWD, 6 cylinder. Not a lot of cars that check all of those boxes for sure. Add a turbo and you have something really special. Yeah the more Legacy like evolution of this would be the Subaru RX which was made at the same time. I want an RX turbo so bad. Super rare too.
I think the 4 cylinder XT especially was known for some electronics issues as well as fairly frequent head gasket failure. The turbo engine probably had a mess of vacuum hoses too. I've heard of far fewer problems with the 6 cylinder XT6. Also apparently some small maintenance items like axles were a pain on these cars. Plus since they weren't nearly as common as American or other Japanese cars of the time, I'm sure parts were more expensive and harder to get. Looking at one now it would be easy AF to maintain given all the space to work on it and simple parts.
i live with my grandmother who has an 87 GL XT thats been sitting for at least 12 years and im wanting to restore it. it ran when we it was parked but some animals moved in to the hood. very little rust just worried about the electronics and i cant seem to find any information about restoring these online are there any tips or advice you could spare?
Wow I'm jealous! Honestly there is very little information on restoring them and parts availability is sparse. The best advice I can give is they are actually quite simple cars to work on, other than the dash components perhaps. Just take everything one step at a time and it's all fixable. If you need spare parts, try checking other models by Subaru from the same years range as the XT and see if similar parts are available. Certain electronic, engine, and suspension components can be borrowed from other models and made to work. Best of luck!
@@802Garage wow what a fast response i appreciate the advice, im glad to hear its relatively easy to work on, it makes me feel a little less nervous about taking it on haha. well first step is popping the hood (broken release cable) and analyzing the damage, thanks again and ill try to document the process as to help others in the future :)
Should be able to pop the hood with some decent screwdriver and pick work. May be able to reach the cable behind the grill with some long needle nose. You'll likely need to clean the gas tank so check that out too. I'd imagine there's a fuel pump access door in the back. No problem on the quick response! Get notifications on my phone. Def looking forward to seeing you work on your car. Let me know when you make progress please. :)

Trust me, I wish I could have! It was in Colorado and I live in Vermont. Plus I was broke and on a long road trip. The car was fairly clean, but it did have some rust issues as well as a few mechanical problems and interior issues with dash pieces. Nothing I couldn't have fixed, I'm just saying it wasn't a phenomenal example. Someone else in the comments did end up buying the car! Thanks for watching and commenting.
That thing is awesome! So many cool features that were way ahead of its time. Also can’t wait to see more road trip videos. Did you get any video riding in Trevor’s Supra?
Yeah I love when Subaru was always trying to be futuristic and different. The new Legacy isn't bad though. Just def not quirky. The very next video is actually me riding in Trevor's Supra! I wish I had more and better footage, but it was a blast.
Well first I would recommend going through the typical diagnostic process of making sure you have fuel pressure, unrestricted airflow, and spark. Would also be worth doing a compression test just to make sure that isn't an issue causing it not to fire. Otherwise, I might suspect the distributor or something in the ignition system such as an ignition coil. Even if you have spark, it may be too weak or inconsistent. Apparently, those old distributors used some sort of photo electric sensor to get crank angle, and if it is dirty inside of the distributor body, that may cause an issue as well. I'm certainly no expert in working on these cars, but through a series of basic steps you may be able to work out what is wrong with it. Good luck! Let me know if you find out.
802 Garage thank you I’ll let u know if i can get it stared or not and I’m gettin one bomb deal they are askin 100$ or less and it’s in pretty good shape

The ball and socket shifter, the asymmetrical steering wheel, the double adjustable dash and column, the wing pods for controls, the notch by the door mirrors, the wrap around back windshield.

Yeah I think this engine was quite a bit more reliable than the 4 cylinder in the XT as well.
It was definitely the forerunner for the SVX and the highest spec car at the time for Subaru overall.

Basically this is the precursor to the Subaru SVX we all know and kinda love for it odd shape and that sweet H6 engine.
and damn for a rust bucket, it has a 5 speed manual
and pop up headlights like the AE86 since both the AE86 and this are from the same era of cars
my mind was thinking of a legacy kind of Subaru but this is a rare find.
You don't see them a lot cause the car is a nightmare to maintain.
legit asking, what makes them a nightmare? blow head gaskets quick etc? hard to work on?
I think the 4 cylinder XT especially was known for some electronics issues as well as fairly frequent head gasket failure. The turbo engine probably had a mess of vacuum hoses too. I've heard of far fewer problems with the 6 cylinder XT6.
Also apparently some small maintenance items like axles were a pain on these cars. Plus since they weren't nearly as common as American or other Japanese cars of the time, I'm sure parts were more expensive and harder to get.
Looking at one now it would be easy AF to maintain given all the space to work on it and simple parts.
@@captainfancypants4933 from subaru meets and all. Most people seem to complain about the electronics going bad.

very little rust just worried about the electronics and i cant seem to find any information about restoring these online are there any tips or advice you could spare?
Gotta get off my lazy ass... or on it... and edit!
Do u know how to work on this car because I’m lookin at one and it cranks over almost starts but it doesn’t and it’s super close
