Fighting Game Gold: The Master/Boss Ryu (SFV)

- Today I'm finally getting around to a heavily requested topic, the NPC boss characters in Street Fighter V! Unfortunately I don't think they're as interesting as people might expect, but the Master Ryu is a bit of an exception in my opinion, having some very powerful traits and maybe the single best normal I've ever seen in Street Fighter.

the thing i love about these is how they are worded as if the target audience is.. npc mains?
What, you _don't_ main Peter and 2P? Get a load of this guy.

@@LonelySpaceDetective Ngl I main NPC Gief
I wish I could main Mars and the Master (in case the opponent plays another broken npc XD)
The one time Ryu's training has come through. This veraion should be canon with how much experience he has.
I wish they would let us play these characters in arcade mode or something
I mean, Ryu in SFV destroyed Bison, which literally no one else could do. Ryu’s pretty fucking strong now.
that Shinkou Hadouken kinda reminds me of H-Ryougi's EX Hidden Knife in Melty Blood, costs 1/3 of your meter for a long ranged, quick projectile that deals a lot of blockstun, so a most of time, you use it just for the + frames
16:15 Helikopter Helikopter
but very nice video Yellow
you should do shin akuma next 🤟🏾
U TALK A LOT OF BS MATE THAT 😡😡😡 ME OFF
The weird thing i noticed, is that THE MASTER’s idle animation is significantly slower than Ryu’s idle animation.
The Dr. Mario special
He still looks at Guile at a normal speed though
pretty sure that's mimicking how the idle speeds were different between all shotos in SF3, Ryu being the second slowest
It's a bit choppy too, I don't think it quite loops properly
I noticed in street fighter 3 that less experienced/shittier shotos have a faster idle animation than better ones, maybe they're on to something...?

He has busted damage, chip, canceling options, cross ups and throws from SF2
Parry, 2F Shin Shoryu and crazy meter build from SF3
Damaging V-reversal and a 2 bar super kinda like SFAlpha
aaaand
SFIV styled linking routes, all of that with Vs combo leniency
So Master Ryu literally is just putting together everything he's learned over the series? That's really cool and fitting.
fair
don't worry about it
Plus his Hadoken works like Alpha’s and his air Tatsus reference Gouken’s as well as his SF2 air tatsu
The autocombo things are just done so that they don't have to make AI determine what inputs to make air combos or anything like that. They're not meant to be playable characters, so the programmers didn't bother making any customization possible. IIRC in SFIV, boss Seth's legs in the corner will always cancel into his stomps or DP without any further input.
Incidentally, at least in SFIV I believe this leads to a side effect; the auto combos don't suffer as much from damage scaling, as the automatic hits are technically considered part of the same input.
So for instance Seth's stomps end up doing a bit more damage when he combos into them than they do for his normal playable counterpart.
Hard to notice the difference unless you're looking for it, but it is there.
@@LonelySpaceDetective Ex Agunimon In Battle Spirit 2 Is So Good,He Can Get 1520 Orbs ON HARD!!!!
damn didn't realize boss ryu had Sol Far Slash
Imagine if it also made his combo scaling start later.
Just Wanna mention that the air tatsu’s are a reference to marvel 3 Ryu, where they function the exact same
That's really neat, seems like there's a lot of references in this char
Hey Guilty Gear +R has EX versions of every character that's essentially Omega mode from USF4. Some of the changes are pretty minor, like making Sol and Ky play more like the other, but others are crazy different and essentially unused concepts for movesets, especially the characters who debuted in XX
I'd love to see this covered. There's not much info about EX characters out there.
Guilty Gear games have the worst names possible
@@illford
Do you think they changed the name to Xrd because XXX would have sounded like a H game?
And then there's BlazBlue with unlimited characters, who are extremely beefed up versions of the base characters, often with their own unique moves and mechanics (Hazama has free access to all of his stance moves + unlimited life steal field, all of Ragna's sword normals drain health, Azrael gets Slayer's backdash, *Tager can run* etc.), and they all gain an extremely powerful super or two.
One of my favourite things about +R is EX Potemkin gets all of his Missing Link moves back, like Nitro Hook. And EX Holy Order Sol is literally just Missing Link Sol.
21:00 but he already does that in sf3... where he's the closest on being a master- oooh, I get it now.
so I guess Master Ryu has a spacie shine instead of a proper V trigger.
You should definitely take a look at the Unlimited characters in Blazblue Chronophantasma (they were sadly removed from the final game in the series, Central Fiction). They all have a bunch of crazy stuff
there's a mod for that

ayo that's dirty
@@BigYellowSilly when the tick throw becomes a dick throw
Having thought you were going to do Shadow Lady first, I am happy you did the Master instead. I thought he was interesting in his design because of the stuff 'under the hood'. Looked like Ryu with less moves and buffed up, yet the changes like his version of the V System made me pay closer attention. Other than frame data and exact hp and stun, you have confirmed some of the stuff people including myself have suspected. Hate blowing FM against him, though.
A bunch of the stuff he has is no surprise considering Master Ryu comes off as all versions of Ryu in one. Mid air tatsus flying in a straight line is straight out of SF2 Hyper Fight. Throw inputs based off old skool SF games like SF2 and Alpha 1 and 2. Surprised it was actually untechable as opposed to CPU telepathy, though, making this specifically SF2 throws before Super Turbo. VS1 parry plus Shinshoryu plus default color obviously SF3. Sweep to Hadouken was a thing in SF2 and Alpha. Knockdown Hadou was an Alpha thing I think. Some stuff looks pointless like the air tatsus, but nice fan service otherwise.
The real surprise is the st hk. I figured he got better frames and hit boxes on his normals, but that round house? My gosh it is ridiculous. Plus 8 on block AND hits crouching? Indeed, who needs CC's? Also, plus 10 after blocked Shinku explains why I've seen the CPU attack after the super.
Admittedly, I figured there would be bosses with boring breakdowns, though sounds like you are saying it applies to most of them. At any rate, awesome breakdown.
SF1 Ryu was the real boss.. 75 percent damage dp.. 50 percent fireball. Ruby slippers he could have stolen from Dorothy. It takes a true master to wear slippers to a street fight
There are boss versions of the characters in Xrd Rev 2. They have bigger supers and get more meter, but I don't know if there is anything else different about them. I think they're pretty cool, but I don't know if you can force them to make them playable somehow.
That's pretty neat I never knew that myself tbh
Speaking of that, there are also the EX characters from +R. Different movesets including stuff that was cut from previous iterations and a bunch of other weird tweaks. Think you can get a save file that unlocks them all. Cool stuff as well.
No one wants to talk about the unlimited versions of the characters from blazblue? Lots of bullshit but man are they fun
There are also boss characters in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax that you unlocked by beating the arcade mode on risky difficulty with said character. They are all cracked out of their minds, with some such as Kanji or Margaret being particularly funny

Amazing video as always! Didn't realize how diverse this character really was, that heavy kick is DISGUSTING lmao.
I know you're probably swamped with people asking you about characters, but any chance for a glance at Mysterious Mod Peter in the far future? I heard you mention it and I think it'd be interesting to see how that character got turned into an actual threat (even if MM plays very different to vanilla.)
Regardless, great video and I can't wait to see what you put out next!
Thank you! I think what I'm gonna do is sink some time into Mysterious Mod after SFV's final balance patch in March, I love MM but I'm not as familiar with it as I'd like
Oh, we doing boss-style characters now? Yes please, I’ve been waiting for this!
I second everyone else saying you should look at Blazblue’s Unlimited characters, they seem pretty cool from what I’ve heard of them.
I kinda wish normal ryu had some of this stuff, like shinsho, the two bar super, better meter build, knockdown hadokens up close (something Marco has in Garou who’s like the greatest shoto ever) that one block string you showed early on and extended throw range. Obviously not as busted though. I think it’d make him a lot more interesting considering every shoto has left him looking very boring. Especially considering even sf3 made him interesting in comparison to akuma Sean and ken.
One interesting quirk is that his Heavies don't have special animations when they hit block. Most notably on his Sweep, he won't follow through if he hits a blocking opponent, since he can't knock them over. Master Ryu is so Chad that he just keeps going
Hey its me*, one of* the guys* who suggested the name "fighting game gold" (my school disabled commenting and turning notifs on :c)
I recently got sfv:ce and I love it (except for having to get fight money to get the characters) and I fought the boss ryu.
I got bodied so hard
Okay so I just realized I had a whole code that comes with the game. I unlocked everything besides the season 5 people (idk if Dan was in season 5 but his stuff wasn't unlocked)
I’d love to see a tournament of only boss characters
HK and throw spamfest
I think the Master would be really broken, a lot of the boss characters have no way out of the HK loop
@@BigYellowSilly Adds to the absurdity when other bosses can't handle it
@@BigYellowSilly
But Shadow Lady I think cleans his clock pretty fast.
@@BigYellowSillycould the stubby frame 2 Gief lariat break it?
I've been thinking about a fighting game Rogue-like and the idea of making a build around meter. Master Ryu kinda gives me that vibe - he gains meter super fast and has low cost supers.
A lil late, but Terumi from Blazblue apparently has "gains meter faster uses meter faster" as his gimmick. I don't play Blazblue tho so may be wrong
@@docs.a.t.7161 Even more late, but that's certainly one way to sum up Terumi. His Drive attacks build meter hilariously quickly, somewhere around triple the normal meter build it seems like, and he only has four specials that don't cost meter, with two of them being Drive specials meant to build even more meter. That's paired with four specials that take 50% meter, a fifth one that takes 50% to activate and drains whatever meter is leftover for more damage, and a final one that needs the full 100% meter. I've never gotten into fighting games competitively, but I've always found Terumi's crazy meter games funny.
Speaking of the boss characters can you cover the absurdity of the Shadow Lady?
It'll happen for sure, but probably not for a while cause there's a lot to unpack and I'd also like to talk about my least favourite boss character first
@@BigYellowSilly Aye awesome! I'll be looking forward to what you have in store!

*Ryu! Get your hand out of there!*
Maybe try your hand at boss Nagorouki. He seems absolutely broken and I would love to see him in the hands of a person rather than the AI
Hey Big Yellow, can you do more videos on boss characters? Master Hand from SSBM is playable via a glitch, you could make a video about it. (him?)
I would probably do Giga Bowser before the hands, but I don't think I want to tackle him quite yet
Forget melee master hand, ultimate let's you play as master hand in world of light to lay the beat down on a bunch of cpus.
3:37
Off the top of my head, I wonder if this is something put in place to force the AI to use the insane buffed Throw with pre-existing inputs from Normal Ryu's AI?
Not much experience with this boss, could be totally wrong, but hey, neat idea anyway uwu
Good stuff as usual!
Its a reference, SF2 throws are proximity plus forward or back and Punch, SF2 throws pre-Super Turbo were also mega scummy, being frame one, unstoppable, and chainable(you could "tech" a throw to take half damage but you still took all the rest)
@@syrelian I was wondering that too-- I have fond memories of my brother calling out "Ken's tractor beam throw" in Turbo lol, and a bit of system shock when I checked out 2I from 3S.
Having the button come out instead of the grab whiff animation also makes fighting against it feel more similar, but I guess I was thinking AI first cuz they don't let you play as these guys qwq
Have you ever considered making a vid on Killer Instinct? The character design is some of the best in the biz and the mechanics are really cool
I love KI but I am complete buns at it so I just kind of quietly appreciate it
@@BigYellowSilly same lol, in my opinion it's the hardest classical fighting game
So The Master's heavy kick is a cracked out Sol f.S? Oh. Oh no.
Not big yellow dropping a video when im trying to fix my sleep schedule😭
Does Ryu heavy kick do the extra +2 hitstun to as-r-ex? If so, I smell another infinite...
I was hoping it would but sadly no ):
Love this video! These NPC design quirks are so interesting
Still waiting for that RBY big 3 breakdown
Heavy Tatsu turns you into the Ryu-copter
-Big Yellow, 2022
I know nothing about Street Fighter but ive been loving all these NPC videos.
1. Do more SF5 n other FG bosses, theyre so crazy
2. They gave boss ryu a frame 1 light SPD and now the world is ending
Untechable massive damage frame1 throw? Sounds like Street Fighter 2 alright
And what the fuck is that s.HK
"Fat as fuck frame 1 throw" lmfao
Who on gods green earth gave SF2 Ryu two parries
Shadow Lady is actually pretty cool tho. She has all her specials from MvC (though Final Mission is her only super instead of having all three), and unlike Shadow she actually has a proper launcher (two if you count V-Skill) that can lead into a double jump combo. It's a shame the mod was broken by an update and now the skin and custom move graphics won't load.
Since you mentioned Misterious Mod, do you think it would be possible for you to make a video about it? The only things I see about it are combo videos.
I'm not 100% on if I'll do a vid about it yet, but I think I might sink a good chunk of time into it after SFV has the last balance patch in March. I think MM is super cool but I don't have as much experience with it as I'd like
@@BigYellowSilly yeah, the mod pretty much makes you re-learn all of SF5 because of how much stuff it changes, so it would definately cost a lot of commitment if you do make a video about it. Ah well, thanks for the answer!
holy shit his throw is the street fighter 2 throw
Master Ryu's air Tatsu reminds me a bit of Hyper Fighting Ryu's air Tatsus, which traveled horizontally like their grounded versions instead of in an arc, like in later games.
It doesn't work exactly the same here, but it does kinda look like a mid-point between the HF air tatsus and the modern ones.
can't believe they just gave him GGST Sol 5s
would be cool if you could unlock by beating him and holding start while selecting Ryu.. oh wait PS4 doesn't have start anymore :P
Shadow Nash has a basically infinite Flash Kick combo.
I played some CPU matches as The Master and unless it's something special about the CPU his throw IS breakable.
Mastering the Art of the warrior gives me many new abilities...
Though unfortunately it hasn't given me that strange pale skin tone yet.
I would love to see EX characters from GGACPR and Unlimited Characters from Blazblue Chronophantasma. Those games have so much potential for broken shit.
Hakumen and his Mishima Electrics off his stolen from Tekken command dash
This reminds me of how OG World Warrior characters were in HSF2
Ohh boss videos I'd like to see one on Shadow Lady.
There's so much to unpack with her she's the peak of the bosses for sure
@@BigYellowSilly Honestly yeah, almost entirely unique specials, an air dash, combos off throws, Kara grabs, launchers and that’s just the stuff I remember about her lmao
We will wait patiently.
"A stronger version of Ryu wouldn't do fancy 99 hits combos, he'd just hit you 5 times and you'd die"
Ah yes, Smash 4 Ryu
Come to think of it, Sm4sh Ryu *does* have shin shoryuken as his final smash 🧐 it's master Ryu confirmed
If you're willing to dive into boss versions of characters give the Gold versions of characters in GGXXac a look, or the more well known Unlimited characters in blazblue
It is kind of a disappointment that with stuff like Rainbow Edition and SF4's Omega Mode doing completely ridiculous things that may or may not be something that Capcom might bring into a character in the future that it seems SFV's boss versions just cranked up their numbers.
hi, could you do an analysis on 3rd strike akuma? just because he's my favorite character and you have fun commentary
You said that the boss characters only really have 1 or 2 interesting tools in their kit, so maybe you could do a video that's just a quick rundown of those interesting things across the boss characters
They should of released all the boss characters as apart of the final update. Not for online play ofc but it would be fun as hell.
When i see characters like this, it always makes me think of Alpha 152 from Dead or Alive 4. Fighting games have a lot of stupidly good boys characters, but holyyyyy shit Alpha was busted beyond belief
Oh hey, I understand that Newborn Baby title now.
s.HK not being a crush counter is actually a positive because it scales your combo less and you can still do it twice lmao
True the only downside is less v-meter build and it's less rewarding as an anti-air but still that's so minor
In lore, that’s probably sf3 ryu. Because in sf3 ryu is at a point where he is no longer a hero as he has become a master. He is probably not gonna improve as much anymore, he is also no longer the protagonist (that’s Alex now).
But yeah that’s cool (though sorry for not clarifying earlier but that’s more a theory than anything)
Master Ryu had a special color when you fought him. It resembled his color 1 in SF3, so I think it’s supposed to be Ryu from 3. Which makes sense because apparently the SF game is supposed to take place after 3
If we’re going to talk about EX/Unlimited characters what about EX Vice from the original Capcom VS SNK? That’s an upgrade of a character.
Lore accurate Ryu
I disagree with you calling the Ryucopter pointless. That shit being silly looking in general plus that ridiculous combo you showed on big characters is more than enough reason for it to be there.
I wish they included just some of Boss Ryu's good kit in playable Ryu. Not so he's this busted but at least so he's viable, make him a THREAT. Sheesh. It's like Capcom was teasing us with an actually dangerous Ryu build.
I would've liked the Shin Shoryuken alone, maybe part of V-trigger 2.
for characters like this, video should be "Fighting Game Golden Garbage" baybeeeee
I would have liked to have seen a chip sequence from full meter. blockstring > super hado > blockstring super hado > maybe third rep? > blockstring
That HK is hilarious. Made me chuckle out loud
theres gotta be a challenge where daigo plays master ryu and some top players try to beat him in a single match.
Burning a super on block with a character with ridiculous meter build, you say?
Not sure if I commented this on another video, but have you considered covering shin akuma in 3s?
tbh im still mad at the 0 effort put into his shin shoryuken, Also Master Ryu has 1 unused sequence that they never finished for a throw scripts for these are called (TEST_THR_ATK, TEST_THR_DMG)
pmuch what it is is his 2HP into VT2 punch with a camera angle (i did use this in Mysterious Mod for his raging demon but i made the VT2 punch anim loop mirrored and unmirrored
17:42
Sol Badguy called, he asked his far slash back
Maybe super late, but. SF5 was full of +1 and +2 scenarios. If you're +1 against the Master, then his 1f throw will interrupt your 3f normals. And if you're +2, you can interrupt his 1f throw with a 3f normal, but if your character only has a 4f normal as their fastest option, then you're pretty screwed. Depending on your character's kit, being + against the Master lets him get a mixup on YOU, not the other way around. A frame 1 command grab with that much range is just absurd in this engine.
Ive always hated that modern fighting games prevent you from playing as boss characters.
But now there is a mod that will let me abuse...I mean play them!
Great video. I knew the Master was degenerate but not this degenerate. Makes Shin Gouken and his endless fireball pressure look tame by comparison.
Out of all of the boss characters, are they are equally cheap or is there one clean winner who dunks on the rest of them?
Its probably this guy and his unescapable one button pressure, and ONE FRAME UNTECHABLE THROW, dude's just fuckin out here being the Ultimate Synthesis of Ryus
@@syrelian Yeah that throw is the stuff of nightmares. Im cool with the range, damage, and being untechable (it would basically turn Masters throws into command grabs) but it being ONE FRAME crosses the line.
Though Omega Gill on paper is crazy. Unlimited Vtrigger 1 and 2, an extra super, and resurrection is cheap af.
To this day I'm pissed they never added a mode like "Final Boss Battle" from Alpha 3 where we'd be able to choose CHALLENGING battles (none of that FM crap) like Master Ryu, Shadow, Shin Bison, Shin Akuma, Omega Gill, Triggered Necalli, Max Presidentiality G, etc
But I say thet the characters should be like a OP but not broken so they should play the same as normal BUT have BOTH VSs and VTs at the same time plus the extra moves
But in Ryu's case, not that broken HK for example
That beginning music is giving me so much newgrounds nostalgia! There was a game in the FFsonic series that used this music!
How do you use these mods? I downloaded the boss character moveset but I don't understand how to install it.
Love your videos dude! It’s so much fun seeing little things about the games I love I wouldn’t know.
A weird question tho? Why do you turn off input history with them? Like in 7:50 you say only the weak(light?) input works so wouldn’t it be cooler to see it?
Again not saying it’s bad I loved watching this when in training mode!
It's mainly due to how SFV's input history works, unlike SFIV it doesn't clear when you pause and I don't like starting clips with stuff already in the history
@@BigYellowSilly alright thanks for explaining, can’t blame you for not wanting to do that XD
@@BigYellowSilly it's too bad there's no mod for that.
I think my dream fighting game videos is a nice, big video going through fighting game rosters and breaking characters down like this. I'd honestly love to know why characters in games like MvC2 are either good, bad or somewhere in the middle. It's a fascinating style of content, so big ups to Big Yellow for his top shelf content!
There’s a huge lack in community content that’s made apparent by some really good DBFZ videos by Moldy Bagel, “UMVC3 is Broken” by TheBrunoZone, the Bad Balance series by Bafael, and FG Gold by our guy Big Yellow. All of these videos are great in going in depth about why some characters are absolutely tilted in their games or why are their games so wild to an audience that doesn’t play their game. All of the videos mentioned above are amazing but like you said there’s so many games to be talked about to understand like why would a community feel so strongly about thinking UI Goku is absolutely off the shits without playing the game.
@@chris-cu3kl Exactly! It's a topic with a lot of room to explore across such a large library of games.
I'd love to see you cover Shadow Lady like this
I like how the input sounds are there with the footage. Nice detail 👌
Its so Ryu, he's still a lovable homeless guy, he just kills you harder
The Master and Shin Akuma are the two bosses I really loved fighting.
EX characters in GGXXAC+R are really cool BUT ALSO P4AU IS COMING AND YOU COULD TALK ABOUT THE BOSS CHARACTERS!!
You should really make a video about Boss Gill, he’s not the most unique thing in the world, 90% of the character is just having both V triggers activated, but because of his retribution mechanic he gets so incredibly interesting combos and Infinites I bet
What are your thoughts on the new jiggly puff video: "the juggles that mke me puff (feat. Gunna)"
Something you missed; the master can jump cancel crouching light kick just like SF2
Do you have your own tier list on SFV or do you agree with other top players?
I find top player tier lists interesting but I'm only a plat player, so I'm not really good enough to where I could make my own and have it hold much weight
@@BigYellowSilly It doesn't matter unless you are acting like your tier list is the definitive one.
