Why does the A320 family make that sound

- Hello guys, welcome to another video.
In today’s video, we find out why the a320 family makes a certain sound.
(FOPP) fuel over pressure protector
Just needed to address an issue with a sentence error in my video with one simple which should have been simple but we all make mistakes.
To those that have commented on the background sound, I apologise for not cutting out the sound as I was finished editing and was ready to release. I am aware of the sound so no need to worry about it 😂😂
No apologies necessary, it was pretty easy to hear. Thanks.
Oh, you mean the 9 volt battery in your smoke detector sound at 1:42-43?
You had me checking my own smoke alarm!
Create a video about the sound the A350 makes - it's very distinct. By the way, the Soviet-made Yak-42 also used to make a very similar sound
@@tedantares2751will do
The sound of my childhood, especially in the summer time.
I’m actually missing these sounds
for me a cold winter in jan
SAME!!!!!!
My first thoughts too!
omg same!
I never realised it was just A320s that made that noise I just assumed it was all planes 😂
Yeah me too I thought it was the engines
Most airliners do.
@@ScimitarAviationmost airliners are A320
@@mashy712 not true. Others can be 737s or 757s, but if you live near a bigger airport you can hear some cargo 767s or 777s, or some long haul A350s or what not
Same
every time a320s fly over my house while preparing for landing, I hear that sound. it’s beautiful for some reason.
The sound is like friendly on a frequency suitable to our ears almost like music
I know, it’s such a good sound!
@@AIRPLANEKthank you for sharing it sir
Planes used to be so much louder even when I was a kid in the early 2000s, every time I hear an a320 fly over it brings a wave of nostalgia to me.
Turbojet Vs. High bypass turbofan
I live near an international airport, so I always know it’s 4-5am when I hear this outside 😂
@@Aeronaut1975turbofans existed in the 1960s
Yeah all the newer planes are less loud. Bummer. The louder the better for me. Almost every plane produced before 1986 sounded like a military jet taking off. Insanely loud. Then there was the Aérospatiale/ BAC Concorde 😂😂😂
Miss the days of the DC-9s, MD-80s, 737-300/500s, the old 767s, DC-10s, etc. When you went to the airport, it always felt like something powerful and special was waiting for you across that terminal. Air travel feels very tame and sterile these days, I'll say that much
The most iconic sound of the A320 family is the barking sound inside the cabin.
I love it when my seat neighbor thinks there's a dog underneath.
There is Indeed a dog in the cabin. You can train a border collie to do almost anything and it comes much cheaper than a human pilot. 🧐
Я первый раз летал на самолете и услышал этот звук. Только мне этот звук напомнил не лай, а вкручивание саморезов в дерево и я тогда подумал, что это делают механики😂😂😂
Funny thing is, there might be one in the bin.
The good old PTU
Barking… not a bad suggestion for describing that sound. I like you too, but where does it come from?
Idk why but the sound is so calming
It certainly can be idk why people complained about them
It's an interesting sound but I wouldn't say calming, to me it sounds like the aircraft nose diving into the ground.
@@AIRPLANEKpeople don't complain, environmentalists do, anyways, this sound is the best definition of "there is an Airbus flying around"
That’s the sound of you as a kid playing outside on a hot summer day alone because everyone else is avoiding the heat
It is indeed, because the sound frequencies have a 5/4 ratio (major 2nd)
I never noticed this was unique to the A320 family, but I totally recognize the sound. Fantastic video!
Me neither. And I’ve been into aeroplanes and plane spotting for many years. Well you learn something every day!
Me neither
Yeah I thought it was just the regular sound of the engines
the sound of the plane flying over and the smoke detector dying both equally bring back waves of nostalgia from my childhood home
That sound is so reminiscent of A320s flying over the park where I used to spend most of my free time. Like that one guy said, the sound of my childhood, especially with the birds chirping and the clear blue sky.
Yup, the sound of my childhood too. Don't really hear them that much anymore.
Speaking of chirping, did anyone else hear that smoke detector chirp around 1:41?
YES, perfect description
The sound is nostalgic for some reason
Childhood sound
@@AIRPLANEKyes
I didn't know A320's sounded like a smoke detector battery low chirp, that's cool
I heard that too and thought it was my alarm, thanks for letting me know it was in the video 😂
Shhh don't tell him. They can't hear it
There's nothing better than hearing the sound of an a320/a319 flying over my house especially at night.
So true, it’s very comforting.
You captured this sound so well, better than other videos I've seen about about this. Well done!!
Thank you so much, I appreciate that. 😃
@@AIRPLANEKYes it was great, straight to the point, I didn't know about these ports, I just thought it was the engine spinning.
In a world where every youtube video is 15+ minutes long and contains all the history of aviation and so much information to answer one question, thank you for getting straight to the point. I hear this sound often and I always thought it's from the engines.
Thank you so much!
I hadn't realised this sound was unique to Airbus or how it was caused, I always assumed it was just a jet engine running at idle thrust. Informative video, thank you.
I would have never thought to notice the sound; let alone attach it to a specific aircraft. Kudos for your observation skills.
i'd never even realised that sound was a320-specific - thanks for the video!
Admit it. We've all heard that sound countless times in our lives, but we never knew it was specific to the a320 family
Such a distinctive sound. Reminiscent of the of the whine sound the old JT-9D made. Never knew it was specific to the A320 family though or what the sound was. Really interesting thanks
Like most other aircraft don’t have that pitch in sound maybe some of airbus aircraft that can get close to that sound but non do
There's also that sound which one hears as a passenger inside the cabin of an A320; a sort of barking or sawing noise. Turns out it's part of the hydraulic system called the PTU (power transfer unit), and is a routine occurrence. I was really disconcerted when I first heard it many years ago, I now look around me to see how other passengers react. Nice shots of Glasgow airport, which I use several times a year.
Flew a newer BA Airbus A318 yesterday- got to the arrival gate and waited for the sawing squirrels - silence….
Obnoxious A321
Ah. I always thought it was the gear. Eh-eh Eh-eh Eh-eh Eh-eh
On another note, during climb, some engines sound like a high speed ratchet. I like to imagine they're actually cable cars rapidly winding up the cable.
The PTU should running shortly and few seconds after starting the second engine otherwise something seems not okay, because the PTU is driven by differential pressure only, what could happen, when an engine driven pump is technical lost or the related hydraulic system or one pump has not enough pressure.
Yeah it sounds like wood being sawn
Nothing will ever replace when I was a kid in bed at night and hearing the sound of a prop engine plane slowly gaining height and getting further away from my bedroom and the drone getting quieter until it can’t be heard anymore. It was magical and sent me to sleep too.
I listened to it as if it was music 😂
I, too, have always loved airplane noises. Been sky watching since the day I was born.
@@AIRPLANEK My parents thought I was going to be a piano prodigy until they figured out I was just looking for the right key to press and hold trying match whichever airplane just flew over the house... sorry, Mom!
My aunt and uncle live in the flightpath for Heathrow Airport. Apparently you get used to the sound.
I just love this noise, I thought I was the only one who cared. Thanks for capturing it
Same! I did but i thought it wasn’t commonly discussed so I decided to make a topic on it
top 2 fastest things: 2. Light 1. me checking flight radar when hearing that magnificent sound
OMG THAT'S ME!
Whenever i hear a plane noise or see blinking lights im already on flightradar24 only to be dissatisfied by a southwest 737 that i saw 91937293 times out of
@@Axofhasquit my window faces the usual path planes take when landing in my local airport, idk how high but they are horizontaly maybe 10 km away from the airport, so the other day i heard this ultra loud noise, looked up and it was the thickest plane i had ever seen, a giant. Quickly went to flightradar and tadah! My first A380, it's been a few days and my husband is growing tired of me talking about it lol
Why is this such a nostalgic/ calming sound. everytime it's always heard on that late afternoon, with that sky and the same calm hum as it soars above. Another magical aspect of aviation
It's kinda similar effect when you blow on a beer bottle, as air rushes against the holes in the wing to prevent fuel over-pressure. I live near an airport, as an avgeek it's a pretty cool sound to me, and I can instantly tell, that an older Airbus is flying over me.
It’s ashame you can’t hear it inside the aircraft*
Funny that design flaw ended up having such a positive effect on people. I also love that sound and, like many others, had no idea it was unique to the A320 family.
I used to hear that every day and I could tell it was an a320 just from the sound and impress people lol. I miss that sound. Thanks for making this video, I always thought it was IAE specific for some reason
the A320 is very unique for these features, the "barking" sound of the PTU, this sound, i just love this plane so much
All these years hearing this amazing sound coming from over my house and now I finally have the answer.
Amazing video, man!!!
Amazing that something so small can create a sound that millions of people hear every day. Thanks for the video!
Man... I love this sound. In São Paulo you could hear it all the time near to Congonhas airport. It is very nostalgic because newer planes don't make it anymore. Very nice video, thank you for posting.
If you grew up near an airport then this is so incredibly familiar
I knew they made that sound but never really gave it any thought. Your explanation is clear and easy to understand, thank you.
Always welcome
When you see and hear an A319 and A320 with this sound, it is because their engines are IAE V-2500. They are of an older generation. I got so used to them in the 2000s and 2010s that I knew from afar who they were. Here in Brazil, LATAM still uses the IAE V2500 engine, but in small quantities, which are slowly leaving the company, as the new A320 and A321 are coming with PW 1000 series engines.
It is not because of their engines. With the whistle sound you can here both that and engine sound whilst flying overhead
I always wondered what that sound was. There is another sound I hear too, and it's like a whooshing woop sound when a plane is either slowing down or descending.
When I lived in London, I loved the sound of Concord flying over. One would be the 6pm (New York) landing and another around 10 pm (Hong Kong) landing at Heathrow. I lived in SE25.
Thank you for the info. You've got another subscriber
The whooshing sound is the engines spooling up as the plane levels off
My primary school and my house were directly under a flight path and we would hear this all the time! Really thought it was all the planes making the noise because we’d see so many different ones but really brings me back to being 8-13 years old :))
Dude, you have no idea how accurate this comment is to my life. My building (the one i currently live at) and elementary school are near a flight path as well! We always see planes taking one specific path facing north, but these planes were mostly heard during the summer around when i was 7-14. Nowadays, i dont hear the a320 whistle anymore :(
The question that's been in my head ever since childhood. Only someone who appreciates simple beautiful things in life, would probably notice beautiful sounds like these and wonder why it occurs. Subscribed!
Thank you!
@1:42 sounds like it’s time to replace the battery in your smoke detector. Be sure you check the service date while you’re at it.
Had to scroll too far to see this
The sound of my childhood when all my cousins would be over on a nice sunny day in the summer, and I will be at my grandmas house running around, playing in the pool with my cousins. nostalgia
1:06 Oh wow that’s Clydebank, certainly didn’t expect to see a birds eye view of my hometown when I clicked on this video. Nice!
I Went to study away from my home-city, within India. My hostel was 3-4 miles away from an airport in that city. The only models which land on that airport were Atr-72 and Airbus a320 family.
Lately at the age of 16, these aircraft spark the curiosities inside me and made me a crazy aviation geek.
I left that city now and came back for other part of studies, I'm now a mad av-geek and i will never forget those a320 whining at 3k feet just above me lining to land. I have so much nostalgia and teenage memories attached to the CFM 56 engines.
Always thought of myself as a massive aviation fanatic, but I never knew this 👍
As aviation enthusiasts we learn something new every day
That's so cool, instantly recognized the sound and never made the connection. Just thought all planes sounded like that for some reason. Very informative, thanks for sharing! 😊
No worries
Interesting! I’ve know the P-51 Mustang also makes a similar sound at high AoA. The sound coming from the gun ports. Similar to blowing air across the top of a bottle to produce a note.
That engine noise reminds me so much of my childhood, please let it continue forever
Thanks for the explanation.
1:59 what a beautiful image right there. The Sun is spectacular on background.
Thank you!
I’ve been flying these things for nearly 20 years and I never knew that. Thanks buddy. 😂😂👍👍
No worries 😁😁
The sound of my childhood being a kid playing outside all day everyday in the summer from morning till it was time for bed!
Very cool. It’s basically like the sound you can make by blowing over the top of a glass bottle.
We lived not far from Essendon Airport in Melbourne Australia in the 1950’s. The aircraft sounds from my childhood were those glorious radial engines of DC3’s, DC6’s, Lockheed Super Connie’s and Bristol Freighters. It wasn’t until 1957 that the first jet landed. It was a weekend and thousands of people flocked to the airport to see it arrive. Things have certainly changed.
For me, it’s the sound of the days of Northwest Airlines. Although Delta has a bunch of Northwest’s A319s/320s, as a kid it stander out. You could always tell them apart from the very common DC-9’s and 757s, also being some of my favorite sounding aircraft.
When they’d fly over my house on the approach pattern to Detroit, they were in that 6,000ft threshold.
So many things little aspects of aviation can bring back. That is a comforting sound.
I hate autocorrect. I’m sure stander was the best word to make most sense in that second sentence, definitely not stood lol!
Out of all the aeroplane sounds, the howl or whistle of one of these flying overhead is one I actually kind of like.
They’re quite unique as they’re the only sounds not caused by the engine
There's a regional airport only a few kilometers away from my house and the landing planes are making their final turn exactly above my house. So I hear those A320 sounds every day, especially in summer.
The sound is so beautiful like i am heading back to home from school and then an A320 wizz air just passed above my head with that sound. Something perfect
Since my summerhouse is near the airport, I hear these sounds a lot. It’s so calming, and it gives me nostalgia.
Thanks for hearting my comment!
I live in a relatively medium sized city. Back when I was a kid 20 years ago DC-9s and 737-200s used to be commonplace and boy did they shake the entire city when they took off. Even when they engaged the thrust reversers you could hear them from the other side of town. Nowadays you could barely hear the new A320s take off, even the much larger A350s. Shows you how far technology has come and is overall good for the people living in the city, but it sure does give you nostalgia to hear those classic turbofans. Can still remember my childhood excitement when we first saw an A340, thinking it was a 707. Got a taste of that again a few years ago when an Il-76 made a fuel stop and boy was it LOUD.
I live right under the flightpath for the Punta Gorda, FL airport, and the only commercial aircraft that fly there are A320s. I hear that sound multiple times every day. I always figured it was the flaps and slats, so interesting to know what it actually is.
That's totally fascinating. I knew of the sound but never knew the cause. Thanks !
Includes a GLA approach with views over Clydebank to the Kilpatrick Hills, over the River Clyde, then Black Cart Water.
I live in Dunoon close to gla
Thank you!! I live in Chicago, directly under the flight path into O'Hare. I hear that sound all the time and wondered why only some jets made it. Now I know.
I asked myself that question 20+ years ago, you just answered it for me, top work!
Thanks man!
What a pleasant surprise! It’s usually a Brit or Indian doing these types of videos. And you answered a question I didn’t know I had! I thought all jets made that sound at low altitude.
There's also a sound that sounds like this one in trains, idk what it is but it's a nice sound
That'll likely be caused by the train's inverters. These generate variable electrical frequencies that help control the speed and power output of the motors, this process results in distinct sounds coming from the motors, you're essentially hearing the train's speed/power control circuit at work.
@@ependerah ok, nice to know!
Such a weird thing I remember hearing in my childhood. I remember siting in my garden all the time and hearing this
Wow I always thought it was the engines as the sound has disappeared when the neo’s were introduced 🤔
Disappeared? There sre still lots of „old“ a320s flying around
Interesting! Didnt knew those items caused that sound! I still hear it, from planes heading to LGA, but very rare, now.
Very interesting. Didn't know this sound is only made by one type of plane.
Well, it’s a variety of different planes. The sound is made by the same aircraft manufacturer
Something about that howl of the A320 made my imagination run wild when I was a kid. Good times.
I prefer the sound bro!!✨✨
Same here 🔥🔥
Even as an aviation nerd I’ve never realized this was only A320’s, but now that you say something, yeah, far from every similarly sized jet or jet that uses a similar engine does it.
For some reason I always thought it was Rolls Royce engines making that sound.
At 1.42 that beep… is it a bird or the low battery warning of a smoke detector?
Great explanation by the way👍
Ah thanks and sorry about that I should have muted the background sounds a bit but yes
As I was trying to get video done in the short amount of time I had
One day I heard the roar of a 757, and that moment just stuck in my memory. Maybe it's strange, but it's the best I've heard on board.
Similar to the a310 sounds.
Learned something new!
I’m glad you did 😁
that noise is just nostalgic tbh, i thought you were gonna talk about the whale like noises that planes usually make when landing near my house
chirp
Even if that sound is gone, the sound of the IAE 2520 at TO/GA is still here and it's awesome
I enjoy that sound as it helps ID the aircraft based on listening. My most memorable (and favorite) plane sounds of all-time are 1) C-130 Hercules, 2) C-141 Starlifter, 3) C-5 Galaxy.
That sound is like music to my ears. A distinctive, nostalgic sound like that of Huey and MD500 helicopters, C-130 airplane, Mazda rotary and Cummins diesel engines.
I live somewhere where aircraft transition from descent to approach, and when there's a lot off traffic and and atc makes planes to descent quickly I get to hear the speedbrakes being used, a320s aircraft family creates like a pitching down sound when the brakes are used that stays, and it pitches up when the speedbrakes are stowed, whereas the 737 family just makes the sound like the eco of a thunder, like white noise but bassier.
Wow, thanks for the memories. I heard a huge variety of sounds living under some kind of approach path near Philadelphia
This explains why not all planes sound like this when passing by. Thanks for the video!
You know, though I had no idea that sound was peculiar to a specific aircraft, I've always wondered about the how and why behind it, but I assumed no one would have an answer. Many thanks, my friend.
While I was at my grandmas that was pretty close to the approach line of my local runway, I always hear this sound to the point that I find it soothing and calm.
Very cool. I have ADS-B on a lot on my laptop and when it's rainy the planes fly over my house descending through 4000 feet. Many times I will look to see the flight details and the type of aircraft. I heard the whistling sound a lot and thought it was the engines. Embraer ERJ 170-200 going over now, climbing 340 knots 17,000 feet. Skywest. Thanks for great video.
Such a familiar sound. Especially in the solidarity of summer since I'm so close to John Glenn Int
As many are saying, I never realized this was an A320 thing. This kind of reminds me how I didn't notice when jets stopped being really loud. When I was kid in the 80s and 90s, if you were outside you used to have to stop talking for like 30 seconds when a jet would fly over (even at high altitude) because the sound was just too loud to hear anyone talking.
On some days now I will get a lot of those sounds if planes flying over me
Thanks for explaining! I finally learned about this fantastic sound!
Anytime 😁
I always loved hearing that sound. Felt relaxing knowing other people are out there
That's so cool to know! I never associated that noise with the A320 family specifically but I also loved that sound.
Airplanes usually landed over us only in the evenings so this sound is a beautiful summer night for my brain.
I love this sound, always gave me some kind of sci-fi spaceship vibes. Cool to learn how it's actually made.
Interesting. A different answer from what I was expecting. I thought you would have said something about turbofans or airbrakes. Thanks for this. All the best, Rob in Switzerland
We're under the landing pattern for London Gatwick where like half of the flights are Easyjet so we have often and still do hear this sound
I live near John Lennon airport and sometimes I check FR24 thinking it's an oddly big plane for John Lennon as the biggest plane that operates there is very rarely the beluga but typically are a321s. It has caught me off guard just how loud they can be sometimes, especially if making a tight turn after takeoff and flying directly over my house. I love planes though, I'm not conplaining
One of my favourite aircraft sounds, it gives a vintage jet type sound despite it not being a vintage jet. It sounds so mysterious.
Did the MD-90 make this noise considering it had the same engines?
Hawaiian Island jumper MD90 I remember was kinda quiet
It had a different sound compared to the a320 and sounded much more quiet
I've heard this *SO MANY* times in my 23 years, and i knew it was planes making that noise but i always thought that's just how the engines sounded.
Now that i know, i'm surprised they never thought about making covers earlier to reduce that sound.
It’s ashamed. Every chance you get, make sure to catch the sound.
Informative videos like this will make your channel grow so fast
Never thought about it, now I learned something New!
OH! I just thought they all made that sound; I didn't realize it was specific to that Airbus family! Cheers.
I always listened this sound as a kid, makes me nostalgic as hell listening to this❤
I had noticed that some passenger jets had what I described as a "musical warble" to their engine sounds but didn't know which jets were making that sound or why. This explains is finally!
