If you want to avoid expensive shipping due to us living in Australia, here is a little work around on Amazon (can do the same on ebay using www.ebay.com.au) which some people have used and made it a lot more affordable. We just wanted to share this with those who this may concern.
    1. Go to top right of Amazon homepage where it has your country flag and language showing
    2. Click change country/region on dropdown menu
    3. Change country to Australia
    4. Amazon page will change all products to those in Australian warehouses. Put items in cart, send to S&P PO box address as you normally would. Should be minimal shipping because its shipping from within Australia

So the reason Peeta wasn’t getting parachutes wasn’t because people didn’t like him. He was actually well liked. As the mentor, Haymitch has control of what is sent out at what time. Because only one is supposed to come out, Haymitch put all of his money on Katniss. That’s why Peeta wasn’t getting anything.

Picking up an unfamiliar bow is an impossible effort to hit a bullseye with 1 shot. That Katniss was able to adjust the aim point after just 1 attempt and then hit accurately with a third shot as well, proves she is an elite archer!

Imagine how many kids Haymitch mentored and then saw die horribly in the games. Besides, he himself participated and won, which is already quite traumatic. here’s a bit of added insight as to why rue’s death caused rebellion and not at all during the other games:
katniss’s empathy. the districts could never band together before because all they saw every year, was their fellows children killing their own. it’s always been everyone for themselves which is a powerful tool used by the capital. who has time for rebellion between working, taking care of your family and trying not to starve? plus as far as you know, no one but you cares if you live or die.
katniss actively mourning and then creating a tribute to rue with those flowers reminded them that they aren’t as isolated as they thought. someone from another district cares for their children as well. it was the spark they needed.

Peeta wasn't smiling and waving at the crowds because he was enjoying himself; he had simply listened to Haymitch telling him and Katniss that you have to be liked to get sponsors and was trying to play the game. In fact, it was probably particularly distasteful for him to act that way because he didn't want to lose his sense of who he was. The thing about these games is that they are also psychological in nature and require some degree of acting (since the games are a televised event), so keep that aspect in your minds as you go forward as you'll see the psychological effects throughout the movies.

Why Gale's name was in 42 times:
For the Reaping, every child between the ages of 12 and 18 gets their name in once, once every year and the entries are cumulative so that by the time you're 18 your name is in a minimum of 7 times.
However because most in the districts are starving, there is a tesserae system (which is what Katniss is talking about when she tells Prim not to take extra food) - You can get tesserae once for every person in your family that gives you extra food and oil for them. So Katniss was entered four times her first year - once because she had to, and three more times for the tesserae she took home for herself, Prim and her mother.
Gale has been in the reaping longer and though they don't show it, he has four younger siblings AND his mom to take care of as his father died in the mining accident that killed Katniss' father. So he's had to take tesserae, and as a result has his name in a LOT of times.

If you watch the next movies, keep in mind that Peeta's leg wasn't completely healed by the medication. It killed the infection that would have killed him, but other then that he was still hurt. That's partly why he struggled so much in the finale, before they go back to 12 his leg is amputated. Katniss also lost hearing in one ear from the cornucopia exploding. I bring this up because they don't mention it in the film, but they still portray Peeta, and the others especially when they interact with him, the same way they do in the book, so it doesn't always make sense without that context. Also another thing they don't mention, but leave up to some small context clues is Gale and Katniss aren't dating, they're childhood friends, they're close and look out for each other but Katniss doesn't have feelings for either of them rn. She's 16 and Gale is 18, so it was his last year in the reaping, they have a deal if one is chosen the other will stay behind to take care of the others family. The prize for winning the games is money, a bigger house on the outskirts of your district, and bigger food rations for your district I'm pretty sure, and you don't have to compete in the games again. Haymitch is a mentor because he was the last one to win the game from 12 before Katniss and Peeta, the only other winner from 12 was a mystery and a long time ago. They never divulge Haymitch's past in the films, but he had a particularly brutal game as it was on a quarter quell, which is every 25 years where they 'spice' things up. In that year they doubled the tributes, so it was 4 instead of 2 from every district. Haymitch had to outlast 47 other contestants. And the way he won wasn't liked so he was punished for it... that's why he reprimanded and warned Katniss after the way she won.

Yes to everything you said, just: Peeta's leg was completely healed by the medication. In the books, he had to amputate his leg because of the mutts. Katniss did a tourniquet, which saved him, but it was too late to save the leg due to blood loss and no circulation to the tissue, so he still had to amputate the leg. As for Katniss, her hearing loss was surgically healed by the Capitol after the games. She was deaf in one year for the whole duration of the games (the one she bled from), while the other came back naturally after the explosion.

the districs do have differences in economy, district 1 and 2 are the richest and 12 the poorest.
As you already know theyre seperated for their resources, district 2 is masonry, 6 is transportation, 4 is fishing, 10 is livestock etc.
You can see a little in this movie how growing the different districs benefits and makes it harder for the tributes, for example Katniss was able to navigate the forest well (finding water sources and catching food) because she basically grew up in the forest, however she had no training previous to the games and the poorer tributes bodys are usually worn down and starving before they even started in the games. The richer districs had the benefits of being trained basically since birth but once they were in there they didnt really know how to use the natural resources to its full potential like Katniss did.
I also think something that gets overlooked is how sad the games are for the richer tributes, basically since birth they've been trained up and told that they need to compete in the games and win, basically raised to be killers. Like at the end when Cato said 'thats all im good for, right?'

In the books, there was some kind of epic throwdown between Cato and Thresh. When Tresh lets Katniss go, he takes the 11 backpack and also the pack for District 2 (Cato and Clove) which forces Cato to go after him instead of Katniss. Thresh's section of the Arena is never shown in the movie, it's apparently some field of wheat or something. But Cato's backpack contains body armor, which suggests he thought he needed that to go against Thresh in "his domain". The Gamemakers make it rain for a couple of days while they fight it out. Since the books are from Katniss' perspective only, we never know exaclty what happens. But Cato shows up running from the dogs, and the body armor is actually a hindrance in the end, because whe he falls to the dogs they knaw on him for hours before Katniss is able to make the shot to put him out of his misery.

Until the rule change Haymitch only had hope to get one of them out alive so he had to choose one. While Haymitch liked Peeta better he figured between Peeta protecting Katniss and Haymitch sending gifts the two of them could get Katniss out alive. Peeta says in second book he would have wanted Haymitch to choose Katniss and send the sponsor gifts to her.
Peeta kept Katniss alive as she would have died in the initial bloodbath had he not shook his head at her because she was ready to run in for the bow and he knew it. The fact she had an unexplained 11 put the target on her back and the careers would have gone after her first at the cornucopia.
Literally if Katniss was the spark Peeta was the fuel source that allowed for fire to catch.
Peeta scored in Career range, excelled in hand to hand combat, was handy with a knife, a wiz with coaxing a fire and he wasn’t impulsive. Technically Peeta probably had more of a fighting chance at surviving then Katniss.

@@ay5415 I think Haymitch is incredibly good at reading people and knew exactly how both Katniss and Peeta think. I think he damn well knew they would sacrifice themselves before killing the other. However, it is incredibly crappy Haymitch never got an okay from either Katniss and Peeta before making them pieces in his games.
From reading the books multiple times my head cannon or theory on why the rule change happened is that a 16 year old boy did not come up with the star crossed lover strategy. In fact I don’t think Peeta was in love with Katniss till the cave. Even says when Katniss attacks him after the interview that she is upset her boyfriend saw it and that he bet the boyfriend could recognize a bluff when he saw one. We know Haymitch and Cinna were involved in the ******** in some capacity and ******* was at the 74th Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games Peeta has two lines that could be considered throw away -“Have you been on the roof yet” I shake my head “Cinna showed me”- and -“Haymitch said you would take a lot of convincing”-. These lines really had no purpose other than to point out private conversations Katniss was not apart of. In the case of Cinna there isn’t a reason Peeta would need to have a private conversation with Katniss’ stylist as Katniss never references private conversations she has with Portia. It would have made more sense for Portia to show Peeta the roof. In Haymitch’s case that the bread from when Katniss and Peeta were kids was discussed. I believe that watching Katniss and Peeta interact, Haymitch and Cinna recognized the possibility of Katniss being a spark and Peeta being the fuel source so they set up the star crossed lover scenario and when Peeta asked to be trained alone it was actually Haymitch and Cinna who made the decision to train Peeta alone so they could instruct Peeta on what they needed him to do without mentioning their involvement in the rebellion. Once the games started I believe they approached ******* who was at the 74th Hunger Games with the potential spark and fuel source and ******* manipulated the rule change behind the scenes. Of course Haymitch, Cinna and ****** could only set the board up and then hope that Katniss and Peeta did what they needed to do for the spark and the fuel source to catch fire. This also explains why Peeta was surprised it wasn’t all real and thought Haymitch coached Katniss on how to act in the games.

1:02:21 Pudgey is correct. It is heavily implied that 12 is one of the poorest districts and the closer you get to the capital, the better life gets for you and your district. Districts 1-4 are closest to the capital and seem to have the best side perks (technology, power, training, etc). They serve the capital more directly so they get to have nicer stuff. The folks on the fringe, especially 8-12 are the lumberjacks, farmers, miners - very poor and remote towns where the resources are at and then it is sent back to the capital.
In the end, it was a genius part of the evil plan to have some districts that are not adamantly opposed to the games by giving them regular winners and perks.
1:06:00 - The children are forced to participate to keep the adults in line. If you don’t give up two kids every year we will kill all of you for rebellion.
1:07:12 The books are phenomenal if you get a chance to read because you hear the inner monologue inside Katniss and her struggle for survival.

Josh Hutherson has been acting since childhood. Before Terebithia, I've followed his career since "Zathura" and "Little Manhattan" and neither was his first movie. He also was the voice of the lead child in "The Polar Express" and he had lead roles in acton movies: co-starring with Brenden Fraser in "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and with Dwayne Johnson in "The Mysterious Island" as well as the 2012 remake of Red Dawn. All BEFORE Hunger Games made him a celebrity. He has always been a working actor -- which means he's a professional who takes his craft seriously. He's acted in something every year since Hunger Games. His latest film, released in 2024, is "The Beekeeper" with Jason Stratham. Besides his work as an actor, I admire Josh for being compassionate human being.

a few things: Haymitch actually didn't choose to be a mentor, he's from district 12, he won the 50th games; the winners normally become mentors, since he was the only victor from 12 still alive (there's was just one another winner from the 10th games) he had to become a mentor.
district 12 is the poorest one, the bigger the number (1-12) the poorer the district.
before Katniss there hasn't been a tribute who showed that much emotion and respect after the death of a tribute from a different district, so when Katniss did all that for Rue that was the first time in the games that there was compassion from a district to another, to me it really marks the moment that the districts started uniting against the capitol. something sweet that the movies don't really show is that district 11 (Rue's) raised money to send Katniss bread to thank her, witch shows a lot considering that 11 is one of the poorest

They CHOSE KIDs to exploit the kids' innocence. The capitol is trying to remind the district what human behaviour is like without Order. Once u are put into an environment where resources are scarce(like in the Arena),Humans become more primitive and would fight to death for what they need. This is the Capitol's way of saying why the Capitol IS important, why the districts should not revolt, the need for order..That without the Capitol, there'd be Chaos (that there'd be large scale Hunger Games). They do this annually for constant reminder.
they have a lot of purpose for the Hunger Games:
    *As a reminder
    *A form of retribution
    *Punishment
*Display of Power and as a reminder of the Capitol's power
    *Entertainment
The problem is just that the Capitol is elitist, and they think they are superiors and the district are inferiors. The capitol citizens are actually convinced they're the better people. Ofc The Districts have the very reason to revolt.
Before the Hunger games, The Districts were being enslaved for years thus the reason for the rebellion. Before there were any districts and the Capitol, it was just North america. Panem(the country) was a result of World Wars and Natural Calamities.

literally the first time they bring adults into the arena they find a way to escape and start a revolution. Sure, that kind of thing might not have happened earlier (as tensions had risen to an insane point by this time) but adults are craftier, more experienced, and more likely to work together to figure out how to truly win.

I think Snow mentions it in the original films but it's def mentioned in the prequel (don't read on if you don't want to read anything about BoS&S).
Snow says the reason for the games is to "remind us who we all are". Not just the districts but the capital - tributes & victors. His & Dr Gaul's mindset is that nothing in life isn't a game, from school to work to relationships. To an extent this is true - "game theory" & structure is found throughout both natural & man made systems, but when you look at life solely through a nihilist & pessimistic lens to protect yourself and survive, everyone else is a potential enemy. The capitol ensuring everyone sees everyone else as a possible threat or enemy creates division & keeps them dependent on the order of the capitol - the only structure that is consistent (though horrible) is the capitol & they keep the people too desperate to go without in a rebellion because they already have so little. It's a reminder & indoctrination that the districts are losers and losers would never be able to win a rebellion - they lost the last one & they will lose the next one. The capital is the winner no matter what because even through the dark days they still came out on top. They kept that narrative going.

Haymitch never lived in the capitol. He was from district 12 and when he was a kid, he was chosen for the Hunger Games and won. And every year after, they’ve brought him back as a mentor to help 12’s new picks. And Katniss and Peeta were the first ones since him to ever win… so he became a drunk literally to numb the pain, because for decades he’s been tasked with giving kids hope and then watching them die over and over and over. In the books the game makers crafted the "dogs" at the end to have the eyes of fallen tributes & have fur similar to their hair color. It definitely was psychological warfare. It's never confirmed, but they discuss that its unlikely they took the literal eyes from the fallen because the bodies would have to go back to the districts to bury & that probably would have been "too far". My guess is with the tech they have, they flash cloned/grew the eyes after collecting dna of the tributes.

Something worth mentioning, when Katniss honors Rue how she does, it triggers District 11 because kindness like that between tributes is unheard of, as the districts aren’t allowed to interact with each other.
The theee finger salute originated in district 12 as a sign of admiration, respect, and goodbye. I can’t remember if they did it for all of the chosen tributes but the saluted Katniss because volunteering had never happened in District 12 before Katniss. Katniss was respected because she constantly hunted outside of the fences (something VERY illegal) and traded whatever she got for food.

There were originally 13 districts when the US was taken over by the founders of Panem, not counting the capital. Each was assigned a main export.
District 13 had been the military supply district and at some point they realized they had the power and tried to overthrow the capital. Hence the “Treaty of Treason” when they failed. Their district was completely destroyed in retribution by the capital.
District 12 was indeed the coal mining district hence the black outfit with fire.
Pudgey is right that Districts are wealthier as you move up the list. The one who dug up the mines and replanted them was from the power production district and was very handy with electrical circuits.
In the next movie you meet a character who complains she is dressed as a tree because she is from the forestry/wood production district.
You’ll also meet a guy whose favored weapon is the trident because he’s from the fishing district. Katniss was only able to hunt because the district didn’t have the money to keep the electric fence powered all the time so she and Gale would have to listen to see if it was active at any given time.

the thing about Haymitch, being District 12's only winner, he's had to be mentor to both tributes each year since his win. Meaning, each year, he mentors 2 kids, that have ended up dying in the games

  • @toukie
    @toukie 3 місяці тому +1

When Haymitch says "Embrace the probability of your imminent death And know, in your heart, that there's nothing I can do to save you" just breaks my heart. The kids from the poor side of District 12 have to sign up for grain and oil to be able to survive. They need to sign up once for each member of their family and what it does is put the name of the child in the reaping for each time they sign up. So if a child has 3 other family members, the first year , they have their names in 5 times (4 x for the food + their regular entry). The following year, they have their names in 10 times (4 times for the food x2 years + 2 'regular' times.). The third year, they have their names in 15 times (4x3 years + 3 regular times). You get the picture. This is why Gale's name is in 42 times instead of just once per year, because he has 2 brothers, a sister and his mom. That means most of the chosen tributes come from "The seam" (The really poor part of the district). They are starving, they are small, they are tired, have no energy or muscle mass. No sponsor would take them on. So for the last 23 years, Haymitch watched 46 kids die because there was nothing he could do to save them. And then, he had to go back to the district, year after year, and face the families and loved ones of those 46 fallen tributes. For the last 23 years, he has to live with the memories of having failed to save those children. I don't even live in that world and I want to drink.
When he sees that Katniss and Peeta have heart, they have spunk, they have muscle mass, he sees that maybe, just maybe, there is a chance he could bring one of them back alive... no matter how slim that chance may be. Sorry, this is one of my favorite series of all time so I tend to get overly passionate.

I love that Pudgey instantly gets Haymitch as a character because a lot of ppl miss the fact that as their mentor and a Victor he not only had to kill his way to survival but seen multiple duos of kids from his district get brutally murdered, while under his guidance. It should also be noted that Haymitch faught in the 50th Hunger Games (24yrs prior) in which there were 48 tributes…double the amount of bodies. One sole winner. I applaud Haymitch for only being an alcoholic honestly because he might not have lived long after winning otherwise.
(Edit:) Effie is so amazing and low key clutch to have as an ally by status alone…she’s President Snow’s niece. Not spoiler.

Katniss and Gale were almost twins in the book, for example they both loss their fathers in the mines, both supported their families, and both were hardened in life. In the book Katniss pointed her arrow at Peeta not trusting him.

in district 1, 2 and 4 winning the game is basically an honor so they almost always train and volunteer at 18 and then team up until the end, most victors are from those 3 districts. haymitch won the 50th (in which there were 2x tributes) and has been a mentor ever since so he has seen 44 kids die in the arena until now so its pretty understandable he became an alcoholic and doesnt really care anymore.

I like that you made the connection to the parallels to real life where our Hunger Games is middle & high school for 12 to 18 year olds where they have to compete for the best grades to get the best jobs, the winners get to become rich & the losers have to work hard just to live. My Fun Fact; 'May the Odds Forever be in Your Favour', the odds of winning were 4.16% in a fair fight but with 2 districts training their volunteers the odds were much lower than that.

So the background of the dogs, or mutts, towards the ends of the games are much more sinister in the book. They got the eyes of the fallen tributes and somehow you can distinguish their face. One dog got Rue’s eyes. And oh, Cato’s suffering was cut short by Katniss in the movie. However, in the book, it went on for much longer. They heard him squealing for a long time.

When the game makers were ranking all of the kids 1-12 based on threat level, Katniss missed the first time because she was used to a homemade, wooden bow and the one she used in that room was metal. It would’ve been heavier, a different size and shape, etc. So while she never missed back in 12, she missed then because she wasn’t used to the bow. But the fact that she corrected it so quickly and nailed it every time after just goes to show how skilled she is.

Alright, it has been a few years since I read the books. As far as I remember the three finger salute was a sign of respect shown for those who have passed on. At least that was my impression when I read it. Naturally as the story progresses the gesture changed into a sign of rebellion. From Bing: "Initially, the gesture signifies thanks, admiration, and goodbye to someone you love in their district".

Maybe someone already said this, but the hand signal is a sign of respect for the dead in District 12. So everyone standing in front of Katniss at the ceremony is respecting her in advance of her seemingly inevitable death.

I cant wait for you to watch the rest of the series.
background info about Haymitch that isnt in the movies that will make you appreciate who he is more - esp with the theme of the next book/movie.
Haymitch is the only living person from D12 who is a victor of the hunger games. Therefore, he is the only 'mentor' currently available EVERY. FUCKING. YEAR, when the games happen. So first surviving the deaths of 47 other kids then growing up two mentor 2 children for the next 24 years, you can imagine why he'd end up drinking. Thats 2 kids he had to meet every year, possibly already know, mentor, then watch die. Kids of adults he had known as kids possibly reaped. So like sending a niece or nephew to their death. He won at 16 years old, so he first mentored at 17. Chances are at that age he probably knew the kids being reaped as well.
He won the 50th Hunger games. Every 25 years they have a 'Quarter Quell'. Its hunger games with an extra set of special rules. s25, the districts didnt get reaped from a name pool, but were voted/chosen by their own people in the district. The special rule for the 50th was that instead of 1 boy and girl from each dis, there would be 2 of each, 4 total. So thats 48 kids fighting to the death.
At one point in the game, Haymitch was tossing boulders off the edge of the cliff. He was at the edge of the whole arena. There was a forcefield to implement the border in place, and it actually bounced anything he threw off back. Think trampoline, ricochet etc. The final two people alive in the games were Haymitch, and a girl from Dis.1. She had an axe and chopped up his stomach. He gouged out one of her eyes. She was chasing him in pursuit to finish him off. He led her to the cliff area he had been to before. She throws the axe at him, he ducks, axe flies into the boundary and bounced back, lodging itself into the girl's head. Haymitch won, thanks in part to exploiting a part of their [capitol/gamemaker's] own mechanism.
Two weeks after he won, Snow had his girlfriend, mother and brother killed. As punishment for making the captiol look like a fool and viewed his stunt as an act of defiance.
This is why at the end of the film, he warned Katniss that they were not happy with berry stunt.

To clarify, the explanation of why they even have a winner by President Snow wasn’t about the games being corrupt rather it was about how the games are essentially psychological manipulation meant to keep the masses in line by giving them hope yet not too much lest that spark of hope turn into another rebellion. Ruling over people with fear alone only breeds resentment and insures another rebellion will happen eventually so they give them a little hope via the games rather than simply executing the tributes. The winning tribute gets a better life for themselves & their family and the district they’re from gets additional food & supplies for a year.

This is one of my favorite series! The sequels build so much on this too! Effie the woman all dolled up we first met has a great character arc. I cried for Roo, she was such a sweet girl. Supposedly (i havent read the books yet) normally the tributes are meant to leave the bodies, but Katnis refused, she wanted to give a sort of funeral for Roo and her district to see. Also those dogs at the end are worse in the books. They built the dogs out of the body parts of the dead tributes so the eyes of the ones that died stare you down.

50:00 the ending in the books is so much more brutal. They make those dogs have tribute faces and the last guy takes like 8 or more hours of being fed on to die. My 13 year old is reading it in school and he was shook. Most of the class had already seen the movie but they were unprepared for the book. Hits different

If I understand it correctly. There wasn't an explosion in the mine. There was a collapse, and her father died. The explosion was a visual metaphor(as she was hallucinating/dreaming on tracker jacker venom) for the destruction of her family's life because of her father's passing and the way her mother shut down.
