See below for tools used in this video!
I wanted to cover up the view of the backyard neighbors since their house sits very high and can be seen from anywhere in our yard. I decided to make a pergola and add lattice to the back as privacy screening. I take you step-by-step through the process here. This was a fun one!

I love that you did this yourself. A pergola isn’t in my budget unless I do it myself, and I already have fence posts from a privacy fence that was around my hot tub. I tore the fence off because I already have a privacy fence around the yard, and I couldn’t see my backyard!
I really enjoyed this video and I’m going to try this next summer. Thank you again, so much!!!
YEAH!! you have inspired me. You do this so patiently, and explain how to do steps BY YOURSELF. I'm so anxious about even starting, Have no building experience. Be proud of how you've given us confidence by watching you/listening to your calm voice. TOWANDA!!!
Best comment!! Thank you so much. When people come to the backyard they can’t believe I built it myself. I always tell them it’s really not hard! It’s just screwing level pieces of wood together 🙂 You can do it! 💪
& I have almost no experience either. First thing I ever built was my board on board fence. Basically the same concept here, just taller. The height is the hardest part
this is the most simplest video and it is just what i needed. All those fancy tools and techniques other people do are so daunting.
Thanks to god provide a beautiful nature....
This video and content was sooooo....helpful !!!!
I so , need to block my neighbors that can easily see into my back yard from there second floor and I KNOW without a doubt how nosy they can be !!!!
Thanks !!!
great job! going to be doing one myself this summer.
Really great job well done I'm in Australia definitely building this in the back yard thanks 👍👍👍
Great job, simple and easy to understand.
Really enjoyed watching this and I appreciate the help you have given me in making the decision to build my own pergola based upon your design. It will form the basis for housing our hot tub which we will now confidently go ahead and order..Thank you so much..Great job!
That is awesome!! We put a concrete slab here after I built this and it really would be a great place for a hot tub
Brilliant job... you explain everything so well..cheers :-)
COOL!!
i like your project!!
Just subscribed to your channel great job thanks for sharing watching from the UK
Girl!! You make me think I could do this!!
You definitely can!!
This is nice
Am a bit late to the party on this one having only watched this tonight, but it is super helpful. this year's project is a pergola with a ground level deck built within the posts. Super easy to follow your methods and like you I won't have a lot of fancy tools so it's great to see it can be done with as little as you did. I'm in Ireland but DIY is the same worldwide....
Thank you! That is so awesome - good luck with your project. We just got concrete poured under this pergola instead of building a wooden one - but having the deck really makes a huge difference
about to try something similar here in the UK, you made it look easy tho :) looks great , no more nosy neighbours.
Good luck! If you don’t do any fancy cuts it really is pretty simple!
Buen trabajo
I love this video so much, I’ve had it saved forever and am finally going to attempt this in the next month or so. Do you have any measurements or instructions written out that you could share?
Good job came out nice. That's a lot of work by yourself. On the lattice you probably should put a board on the seams. If you don't want to see it you could install the boards on back of lattice.
Thanks! And good idea. I am going to add some 1x4s at the seams this weekend
I’m impressed. I need to build a fence about 50 feet long. The biggest thing I need to overcome is my insecurity about the project.
Looks great! This is my inspiration for my pergola project. What length are your posts? Before you set them in the ground & about how tall is the completed structure?
They are 12 ft 4x6 posts. So I’d say it’s a little less than 10 ft completed
Thank you!
awesome job, thanks for step by step. What kind of wood for this project?
Pressure treated yellow pine
Excellent job!! How much did you dig for the posts? thanks
I think just over 2 feet
Really well done!! I especially love how you describe your methods and reasoning for the decisions you made. I have 2 questions. How did you attach the rafters? pocket hole screw? Also is there anything you would've done different now that its been up a couple of months? I'm starting my pergola project this weekend so just trying to soak up all the youtube knowledge in little brain can take hahaha.
Thanks! For the rafters I used hurricane ties. On the other pergola I built, I also put 2x4s in between the two beams and put a deck screw going up into the notch on the rafters. I have a gate on that one so wanted to add extra support. Here is a time stamped link so you can see the exact tie I used for both pergolas.
For this one, I don’t think I’d do anything differently! It’s mostly for looks and privacy and it’s doing its job really well. Thinking about adding a deck to it later on so will have to revisit it then. Good luck on your project!

I like all the shirts!
Really nice video! I was wondering if you have the size of the saw you used for cutting the pole tips. The amazon links you posted are not working anymore. Thanks!
Oh no! Do you mean the tops of the posts? I used a Milwaukee sawzall for that. I think the model is Model# 6519-31 and used a 9inch blade
what were the dimensions of the lumber you used? 4x4 or 6x6 or 4x6 posts? not sure i caught that in the video. 2x6 or 2x8 rafters?
I think they were 4x6s for the posts. Main supports were 2x8 and rafters were 2x6
How much did this all cost? Love it!
Thanks! Without adding in cost of any tools used - for wood, concrete, and hardware I’d say around $400. And wood prices keep going up!
Where to you buy the lattice privacy panels? I’ve been looking for that size opening and can’t find it locally.
I got these from Lowe’s!

Did I hear that right in the video, that you're spanning 16'? Am going to do a similar project soon and wanted to make sure it was even possible! Lol
Yep!! Lumber that long is pretty hard to transport home though. We got this stuff delivered
How many times did you go up and down and moving the ladder to get level? ;P Very good video mate
Definitely was a workout!
😂
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
ok...
How much did this cost for lumber
Around $400 but that was before the price of lumber went way up
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
