I think all the current NBA players 5'10 or below have either been undrafted or late 2nd round pick choices. When I saw 5'9" I had a feeling this would be a kid who didn't have off the athleticism in some regard. It seems like that is the equalizer for undersized guards.
What's more surprising is the fact that he didn't dominate the game in any way, shape or form. I almost thought for sure he'd be murdering guys in HS w/ all the varsity experience he collected early. Kind of disappointing, I was expecting him to be the most skilled on the floor.
I heard you say Muggsy couldn't leap as high, but Muggsy had a 44 inch vertical. Dude had crazy bunnies, but couldn't dunk consistently because his hands were too small to palm
Too many of us become a prisoners of the moment when we see kids at such a young age display skills years beyond their age. I've seen it countless times and like you said their peers eventually catch up and most times pass them. In this case, a 4 to 5 inch growth spurt would've helped as well.
Being hyped up at a young age takes a way from the hunger and drive in a player. Michael Jordan was great because his brother pushing him and his coach cutting him in high school. You need that motivation sometimes to push for greatness. The internet can make you feel like you made it already.

damn! I use to love this kid. Super skilled...at a young age the focus should be on less strenuous workout and more on skills...think of a gymnast, they stop growing because of all the hard pounding....apply that to kids basketball
I agree with a lot of what you said my brother. One major problem with most child prodigies is they peak way too soon therefore the rest of the "pack" catches up to them one way or another. Be it with the skill level, the speed of the game, the physicality of the game not to mention the size of point guards in major college not to mention the N.B.A. You can count the point guards in the N.B.A that are under 6 foot tall. One more major factor is the smaller the guard or player is, the faster he or she needs to be!
Damon Harge was not athletic in terms of explosiveness, speed, nor hand eye coordination. He could shoot off the dribble, but it was more of a push than a shot. He needed to bring his release point up a little higher to develop a one motion jump shot. Dude was good when he was younger, but peaked early because those things such as an explosive first step or ways to use his body like a Steve Nash or John Stockton were never developed. You don't need to have bunnies like Shannon Brown, just be able to get off the floor, which was something guards like him nor Julian Newman couldn't do. Another stunted growth factor is that the clout machine aka ball is life/hoop mixtape ruined a lot of young hoopers by giving them fame like childhood stars, rather than exposure. When Lebron was coming up in highschool, his hype was more exposure based more than it was celebrity based. Julian Newman's pops had him on Steve Harvey and Ellen Degeneres. I thought reading about the top players in the nation was good for the game until about post 2010. This is bad for basketball and has turned the game into a circus. Keep that stuff in the entertainment industry and bring back the old school days when cats were on the outdoor courts, and things will head in a better direction. Lastly, get rid of the trainers who never played ball in their lives. 90 percent of the NBA talent is based more off athleticism than skill in my opinion. Athleticism is essential, but you need to be able to shoot and understand the game. Cats don't train like they used to unless they have trainers.
