More theory videos. You explained that very well and helped me expanded on some of the knowledge I already had about building scales and Keys signatures. It would be cool if you can make some more in depth and practical foundational ones like this one.
A weekly theory class would be cool. Nothing too crazy or long. Something where you watch, learn that one lesson and practice.
I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the tip.
@xanderraymondcharles Theory Thursdays perhaps 🤔?
@@robspectre1973 this is much needed in the guitar-tube community
I second this motion 🤘
Xander,
All I can say is your a very good teacher.. I understood exactly how you explained it. Thank you for taking the time to help out your fellow musicians.. You Rock Brother!!
Thank you very much
You lost me at well today everybody
Check out a book called Fretboard Roadmaps.
😅
He actually is much better at explaining all this than most. Go to a music shop or get online and print out the scale and mode pattern charts. Like the pictures of the actual guitar fretboard with the patterns for each scale and each mode within that scale. You probably will also benefit from learning to read and write guitar tablature. But, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you should probably consider taking professional lessons. Anyways, hope that helps. Good luck 🤞
LOLLLL
That’s so damn funny dude! I’m a dumb drummer so theory spins me round. I literally play guitar like I do drums. It’s all pattern and muscle memory for me. It’s definitely restricting my progress but at least I can make music from my DAW
Easily one of the best theory videos in my first decade of playing guitar. You just got me intho theory back again lol
As others have said, you're a really good teacher, would definitely buy a series like this.
This is great for beginning musicians. I definitely suggest doing more, maybe in weekly, or monthly installments to give people a little time to digest it and apply it to their playing/practice regiment. I'm sure doing something like this breaks the monotony of having to come up with content, and it is so useful.
Well done. A great video brother. Such a huge foundation to progress
Basic music theory is a must. Understanding this made a huge difference in my songwriting and I think in everyone’s songwriting.
This is a perfect companion for the scale/mode exercises in your "One Hour Practice Routine" video. Thanks!!!
This was very practical and that last part about note representation was genius 🤘🔥🔥🤘
Thanks for your video I just learnt more in 10 minutes than I have in 10 years I have never learnt music theory because it seemed too hard to remember all those scales. With you explaining it in whole steps and half steps you just made everything click for me you're a legend.
I’ve seen several of your videos and your shorts, but now I think I’ll subscribe. Thank you for the lesson.
You're honestly a really great teacher ❤️ 🤘 it'll take a bit/couple re-watchs to understand it better (only a beginner, takes me a bit to get use to things like this lol 😅) but honestly, would love more of these down the line
Great video. You explained it really well. I just found you. I have been playing since 1977 and I am accomplished I think and play every day until recent health problems. I'm 63. I know all the theory you talked about here. I get totally lost though with modes. It's like Chinese math. 😂. I learned by ear which is okay, but knowing theory is better in my humble opinion. Especially if you are talking to others about music and need to understand each other.
LOVE the guitar man. Very cool.. Great tone as well . ❤
Regards brother from South Central Indiana. The heartland .
Tim...
9:37 that was a real eureka moment right there for me :D
today i was just starting with your 1hour practice routine and therefore working on the major scale flash cards. i asked myself the exact same thing, whether to mark a note as sharp or flat.
your timing couldnt have been better ^^
thx for the video!
Beautifully explained!
Thank you, I just binged your videos because youre great at explaining. I am still new to guitar and I think this is fascinating.
Please make more theory videos!
Best explanation ive ever had, thank you!
love it! please make more lessons like this
Thanks for taking the time to teach this
That guitar looks sick. I need one.
Yup! It is as simple as counting to 12... Btw, I tell my kids that "elephant fish and busy chicken are good friends, always holding hands, side by side." All else has a space between for the "incidentals". Whom are the black belts of the scale, (That only the worthy understand, & this inspires them to find out more and not just play in the common c scale.) Lol! Thanks for sharing your pov. lol!
FANTASTIC theory video. More please! I actually understood!
Oh. Almost forgot. I subscribed and liked. Good video and you deserve it my friend.
Nicely put SirX
Very nice and understanable!❤
Hope for a Part 2!!!!
Just what I needed 🙂↕️🙂↕️
Music theory was intimidating to me up until 2-3 years ago (still is admittedly, but to a much lesser degree.) However, learning the most basic, entry level aspects of music theory alone changed my guitar and bass playing. It’s definitely helped me creatively in the environments I play and is something I encourage new players to dabble in. Thanks for dissecting this, Ray!
Need more of these or have you ever thought of creating a step by step program for theory? That would be cool. I wanna learn more but have no direction. there is so much its hard to know where to start.
thanks X. I'll be digging out the flash cards.
I appreciate this. Thank you
I agree with others, I would definitely enjoy more videos like this!
Thanks for the lesson brother. I started taking Music Theory in school. This lesson is a huge help. I played Trumper all through middle and high school and can read music. I've been wanting to learn how to read guitar music as well. This lesson helped me in a huge way!! Thanks again, bro!! \m/
Thank you, man ! What you're doing is incredible useful 👏🏻
Great lesson brother, congratulations on all the success 🤘
Ok, when you explained that you can go up the strings instead of down the same string for the pattern. That was mind blowing, always wondered how that worked.
Great video, hope you make more like it!!
Bro, that Thoroughbred:Silverburst is the ⭐️ of the show! I hope they (Dean) make that guitar model a production run. It would almost be a criminal act if Dean guitars don’t do that in 2025. Especially for an XRC/Dean guitar collaboration, with some of us being fanatics of both brands.?! We’ll all have to wait until NAMM to find out.? This was an awesome lesson brother X, and I hope you have a great New Year. C-ya in the next one and until next time…. Stay safe,Stay metal, and don’t forget to riff.?! 🎉🫶🏻🤘🏻🎸🥂🔥❄️🤙🏻✂️???🎊😎🎸🤘🏻
Really appreciate you sharing this stuff for free. Professor Xander! 📝
God I love hearing that classic riff
Very helpful. More theory please 🙏
Thank you for that! What amp sim were you playing through. Sounded ballsy as hell
I just love playing in D# standard, drop Db, Drop Bb, etc…. lol 😆
Great lesson on the basics of theory, XRC. And do you prefer 3 notes per string scales. I’ve never understood it (not a Boomer! but older). Always saw it the old school way.
Can you make videos on how to make metal Riffs using basic theory?
Awesome helped me realize a couple of things. Btw, when you played the scales on multiple strings, 3 notes per string, was that one of the 5 scale patterns that some people use? Where did that 3 note per string scale pattern come from?
tanks bro
That les paul is beautiful ♥
Rad vid!!!
By far, the best explanation I've seen or heard. Please do more!
Essentially you have to memorize all of the shapes for the scales all of the way up the neck and practice to physically be able to play within the scale shape. It’s either memorize shapes or memorize notes. This can be considered easy only if you take the time to memorize all of it. Flying a 747 could be considered “simple” to a pilot.
thank you. so how do you use it to make a solo?
That was great
Great video man 🤘🏼
That dean is 🔥
I can only count to 10 😊
I mostly play in drop f# on a 7. Should I learn music theory in standard and transpose it in my head or learn it as the tuning I'm in?
I would say learn it in standard to be well rounded and understand the chord shapes from tuning to tuning BUT if you don't want to tune to B standard, tune your f# to g# (the standard tuning) and start there. Theory is best learning in a standard tuning first before a drop tuning in my opinion
thumbnail looks fckn badass btw, super cool~
Make a video that's only about the Sharp's and Flats situation.
For Title and Substance.
It will help alot of people that are LOOKING for that Explanation 😊
I already did about 4 years ago.
@xanderraymondcharles Cool Brother.
Hey, what Branch of Service were you?
I was Army.
Anyways, I wish you success.
Seems to me that you are conveying a well planned out philosophy .
Lead On
Music Theory is like mat everything is the seme with a few different rules
Metal riff over Everlong is pretty sick
One thing that I do that helped are first was only use letters. No #/b. ABCDEFGA, BCDEFGAB, CDEFGABC etc. Fill in the #/b "LATER". just get the base of the rotating notes, then add details... Later. When you add details later, you don't TAX your brain cells extra, early on. And, when you add details later, adding details later becomes easier to add. Instead of overwhelming with details UP FRONT. Adding #/b becomes simple. Then adding minor, melodic minor, harmonic minor becomes 'just added details' instead of holy shit taxing details up front. If that helps, let me know. details are like rhythms. You start with 4/4 then move on. You have a base to move on FROM. Adding details is easier than everything up front.
As a side note, that shirt of Joey is sick as hell.
Music theory actually can get complicated, . Especially if your wanting to compose
Are you saying “end harmonic” or “an harmonic”?
enharmonic
@ word thanks!

"It's called music theory, not music fact... there are no rules." - E. Van Halen
Please explain modes now as if you’re talking to a child. Thanks!😊
If your gona give tips on music theory then give us tips on rhythm i think that is more important part of music theory in metal
ok, I know at least this much but I still feel really stoooooopid in music. i got ok-ish chops but no brains
Thank you for the lesson! There is nothing new for me in this video, but still I would like to ask you to not drop the series, because there is literally NO STRUCTURED THEORY COURSES on YT which are not just a promo for a paywalled content. I spent an insane amount of time searching for good theory lessons and the overwhelming majority of content creators just drop it in like 5 videos because people get bored with theory too quickly and the numbers on video don't look good in the short term, BUT I really think if there was just ONE structured theory course without BS, everybody would recommend it (Justin made millions ov followers with his very basic, but structured course). Once again: please don't drop it.
Only twelve notes and twelve thousand patterns
Why Would He Want What Woman Have?
Would He Want What His Woman Wants?
This is hard, ngl
I understand theory and understand what he’s saying but this would be completely confusing to someone that don’t know anything. There is no structure to this at all
What are you talking about? This is the very basics of music theory.
@ to me the basics are how to play in key, how chords, scales and arpeggios fit together. What he taught for the most part won’t help people at all and he was all over
@@ewljr How do you teach any of that without first teaching what he taught? If you try to teach how chords and arpeggios work without first explaining the basics of what a note is, and how scales are built, all you’re going to do is confuse someone. You say he’s all over the place, but you’re putting the cart before the horse if you think teaching g chords and arpeggios comes before teaching the scales.
I'm fretting (worrying) about how fast and complicated he's talking and him thinking it's so easy for other people. Probably, it's so easy for him that he probably assumes it's easy for anybody. I appreciate him trying but it's more like 3rd year college math than it is like 3rd grade math to someone like me😮 I just hope people don't feel stupid or bad if this isn't easy...people learn in different ways and have different ways of learning
...don't give up on music or yourselves...teaching isn't easy either,,,I've tried,.. no offense to Xander,, far from it- you are so good and do it so easily I think you just think that its easy for anybody else. It sounded almost like you could've been speaking Greek 75 percent of the time you were explaining, to me anyway. No disrespect to you,,,,, It's the subject I just don't want anybody impressionable or with self esteem problems or learning disabilities or any other challenges feeling stupid ,,,,it doesn't sound easy to me. And no offense or judgement on Xander he seems like a really good person and is definitely talented and skilled❤😊 it's just tthe subject of music theory isn't easy for alot of people
All this nerd crap just slows creative expression
Thank you for not using clean tones. Clean guitar is gross, I can't even pay attention when people are trying to teach something and the guitar is squeaking and squawking away. It's offensive. You got a sub for that.
G spot
