It's 50 years since News at Ten launched on ITV, so we thought we'd end the programme with a blast from the past. Subscribe for more from the ITV News team:bit.ly/1KMJ3gG
Grew up on this classic theme!! It gave a gravity of seriousness and an epitome of the best in news casting and journalism in 80s and early 90s. When that theme started, you knew without question the world news was on. And as a kid, when News at Ten ended with this theme, you knew it was time for bed!!
This ending theme actually scared me as a child of the 80's. Hearing it from a distance in bed was especially unsettling. Hearing it now, takes me straight back to those times. It's so iconic though!
@@acesequoia9772 It's great to hear other people saying they can relate to that kind of experience as kids. Some ending credit logos/themes used to give me the heebie jeebies too, like that Universal one. lol
This theme's instant recognition and familiarity with it's seriousness and authority, got you in from the kitchen or wherever and drew you to the television for the news at the end of the day.
ITN is written at the end. The issue is that ITN provide news for ITV, Channel 4 and channel 5. each channel prefers to have their own name to avoid any confusion. Not to mention that ITN is basically owned by ITV anyway these days.
I would have brought back the classic ITN logo, the original news at ten logo (square with NEWS at TEN in the middle for this) and used this also for Alistair Burnett's death because the classic NaT theme NaT logo and ITN logo were made for each other quite simply.
Yes, so classic! Although this here was the closing music. Both the beginning and end soundtracks were brutally dramatic and hard hitting, it felt like we were being hit with impending doom! haha
Oh Ok. Not as long as I thought then but thats cool. Thanks for correction. I missed this yesterday so it was good to see. I sometimes see Sky News at Ten as I can watch it live on YT
That closing theme is actually a rework of the original. I remember it from my childhood and although the notes are the same, the timbre of the brass instruments is not! I've perfect pitch and can remember sounds exactly as I heard them!
Wrong, It came from a piece of production music called The Awakening, taken from the KPM album 20th Century Portrait composed by Johnny Pearson. ITN sound engineers took the section towards the end of this full piece and edited it cleverly with the sting in the middle placed at the end to round it off.

Sorry, but this made me laugh 🤣🤣
@@ayrshireman94 It's well written, and true enough. I concur. 😉

It scared me as a kid too, quite jarring and alarming.

Yes it's true... it was so dramatic, like impending doom! lol It's quite a complex arrangement listening to it now, but so classic.
That music is suitable and appropriate for that time of the day.
This theme's instant recognition and familiarity with it's seriousness and authority, got you in from the kitchen or wherever and drew you to the television for the news at the end of the day.
That old theme is the best
Indeed
Beautiful theme and closing . So elegant and magic
That’s why NAT stood out from its other news bulletins. It had a distinctive opening and closing music.
“And now, Trevor McDonald with ITN News At Ten!”
They should bring the ITN Name back it's iconic
ITN News At Ten
ITN Lunch Time News
ITN News At One
ITN News At 540
ITN News At 545
ITN Newsflash
I remember those themes. Each bulletin has a different distinctive theme. My favourite was News at one (with Peter Sissons/Leonard Parkin)
But bringing back a name that hasn't been used in the title of the programmes for 2 decades would just cause confusion.
I totally agree - ITN carried real weight.

ITN = I THINK NOT
When this tune played, you knew damn well the NEWS was on. Now it's just meh
That gave me goosebumps.
This place of music does give one goosebumps. As a young child on the rare occasions when I would have heard it I thought it as rather scary.
that ending theme still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up
Should have stayed with this theme all these years too!
Old school News at 10 tune. Reminds me of when my mum would say time for bed. Except for weekend and school holidays
The old music is so much better why don’t you change it back
She knew it was coming that classic theme she smiling till the end 😀
Yes she knew it was coming.
This was certainly not the original recording of that closing theme. The brass bit at the end was softened!
@@Juliukas101wrong again
@@Juliukas101 Maybe because it was an inferior digital sample of the original analogue version, sampled at 96 kbps.. lol
The best news theme ever. It has a no nonsense punchy feel to it. Makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck as you listen to it.
I like all retro themes on ITN too. It was better each bulletin had its own theme like News At 10, 5.45 and 1.
It’s weird that the old one sounds like the new one but the old one sounds like it’s not using special effects
Overdramatic American. It’s a good theme but doesn’t make “your hairs stand on your neck.” 🙄
The classic theme of News at Ten.
When you heard this young it was bedtime
When you heard this thundering through the bedroom floor as a kid it was bedtime.
“Thundering” just made me chuckle, because that exactly what truly happened 😄
@@dangaAgadanga Yes, it was absolutely brutal, like the world was about to end or something! lol
bong...bong...BONG!!!!
0:03 ew gross gimme more got me rolling😂😂😂😂😂😂 0:20 😂😂😂😂😂😂
genuinely the best ending to a News at Ten, and very good JIB on top of that
Trevor MCDoughnut this reminds me of😊
great but they could have changed the graphics back for one night only surely?
Domine Wimbury that would have been brilliant. I love it when shows go retro

Great classic theme tune
A great ending. Such great memories. Now, nostalgia has become ‘being stuck in the past’ 😢
this gives me goosebumps every time.
At the beginning of itv news didn't Big Ben go " GONNGGGGG! "
for each news headline read out?
Yep.
Yes, so classic! Although this here was the closing music. Both the beginning and end soundtracks were brutally dramatic and hard hitting, it felt like we were being hit with impending doom! haha
Stessa sigla del TG di Videolina😍
my job is done, got this vid up to 300 likes lol.
0:07 epic stuff
I would've brought back the yellow ITN logo and had it fly into shot over the dramatic theme crescendo towards the end.
Jos and Toady 😀TV
It was such a dramatic tune... So damn classic!
From me and the team fifty years on goodnight.
very exquisite 97549 that!
She's presented for 50 years. good on her

@Kwellyman They have just lost Peter Sissons too....
Lol
Eating hot doughnuts
I expected more
