I just changed my mind about having my procedure done at a local "wellness center". The "doctor" never asked for my family medical history or suggested any tests to see if I had any underlying problems that might be an issue. I have spider veins but my larger varicose veins are what I'm really worried about. They make leg exercises difficult and they seem to be ulcerating. This video has convinced me to look for a specialist.
I had laser surgery on my terrible varicose veins that were primarily on the inside of my knees. they were extremely embarrassing. The laser was the best thing I have ever done for myself. One leg at a time. Recovery is tiring if you work on your feet. If you have them, get to a vascular surgeon and get them burned off. You will be very, very happy.
Dr. Dray, thanks so much for this video! I am 64 years old and have a family history of vein disease. I first noticed my varicose veins when I was 28 and pregnant with my second child. They weren't painful, but pretty ugly. I never went to a vascular surgeon because I had heard terrible stories from various women in my family who had had their veins stripped. It wasn't until about four years ago that I finally decided to see a vascular surgeon, specializing in varicose veins, due to pain in my lower legs. My doctor has changed my life! Over these last four years, I have had numerous radio frequency ablation procedures, and phlebectomy in both my upper and lower left and right legs. It's been quite a process, and although it sounds terrible, it really wasn't painful. And all of these procedures were covered by insurance. Today, I have no leg pain and they look so much better. I'm so glad that I finally did something about my vein disease, I just wish I had done something years ago.
My primary Doctor referred me to a cardiologist because of leg swelling. I have bulging varicose veins. He sent me for a vein ultrasound to rule out clots and also some heart evaluation studies. My heart was strong. He did not recommend any treatment because he said "you never know you might need them for cardiac reasons. Apparently if you have bad veins to the heart they can strip leg veins them and use them. He said too many take the vein stripping or other treatments too lightly. Cardiologists are the most trained to do vein surgery. He recommended support hose and prescribed a diuretic. This is just my perspective. I'm no authority but for now will live with my bulging varicose veins.
No cardiac surgeon would use a varicose vein as a bypass conduit. Cardiac re vascularization is usually 1 stent, 2 internal mammary artery, 3 arm artery, 4 vein. Cardiologists should stick to the heart.
I've been thinking about this as I see spider veins on my ankles lately. Love your channel and very grateful for the no BS info you provide. You take the time to research a topic and have the expertise to evaluate and translate what you learn into layman's terms. I remember the old days of vein stripping and people would tell me how painful it is. Glad to know that is no longer necessary.
I had to get used to compression socks but now it feels like an all day massage on my lower legs during a 12 hr work day. I actually enjoy wearing them 😊
@@tiradomaribel9436 I went to a medical supply store, they have different compression strengths, i find 15-20 mmhg most comfortable during my 12 hour shifts.
Thank you so much for the information! I am 37 weeks pregnant with my third (and last!) baby and will be looking into one of these procedures next year for my varicose veins from pregnancy. I’ve had heavy babies and varicose veins run in my family so I know treating them sooner than later will help in the long run, too. Compression leggings have been a game changer my last two pregnancies!
Great video, I’m dealing with varicose veins and currently awaiting an appointment with a vascular surgeon. I’ve had injections before but veins seem to come back! You always have great information! Thanks!
Although my spider veins were very webby, dark and obvious on my inner ankles/feet, luckily, mine were not too severe. I was able to reverse the appearance of them completely, by committing to walking 5+ miles daily and rolling the bottoms of my feet with a tennis ball 5 mins/day. I still do these routines daily for maintenance, and they are very relaxing to do. Moving your body daily is very important!
This was perfect timing. I just asked my doctor for a referral to a vascular specialist because of my leg veins and family history. I now feel more prepared for meeting with the doctor. Thank you!
Thanks for this. Compression socks have really helped with leg pain. I am a little scared to have my huge veins collapsed. I’m afraid of collapsing too many and making the problem worse 😢.
I wish information was more readily available about other possible causes of varicose veins before I sought treatment. I found a vascular surgeon, had an ultrasound, got radio frequency ablation, and a phlebectomy 3 weeks later. A couple years later I got another varicose vein. I have new doctor now who diagnosed me with May Thurner Syndrome which was the cause of varicose veins for me. If I went longer without finding this about myself, there is an extremely high chance I would have had deep vein thrombosis/blood clot. I encourage all people seeking treatment for varicose veins to search for a vascular surgeon familiar with this condition as it is easy to miss and the consequences can be severe.
My father has varicose veins all on his lower legs & tops of feet. It never bothered him (no pain), which is why our internist said, to please leave it alone. Many years later, a colleague of my mom decided to have it done (pure cosmetically, as it did not give him pain either) and he ended up being in pain afterwards. He would never do it again. My dad is 75 now and has been living with this since his late 20s.
I got my first varicose veins when I was aged 15 and working after school in a cafe. I was super fit, very active and perfect bodyweight. As I aged I put on weight and developed more VV. I recently tried a "glue plug" option but it didn't work at all. VV are hereditary in my family. I have huge, blue, knotty, ropey varicose veins now.
I was walking for 4 miles daily when my veins got worse. I saw a vein clinic vascular surgeon. I had sclerotherapy when I was younger. I am 69 and wear Mediven stockings. They have helped a lot. Wish I had started sooner. You get used to them and they feel good.
This is very interesting. My Grandma had 12 children and ended up with LOTS of varicose veins, and they kept taking them out. At the end of her life, she ended up having very low flow in her legs and had to get one leg amputated as she developed gangrene. They said they believed it to be related to too many veins being removed when she was younger.
I had combo intravenous laser and phlebectomy last year. I thought I only had a superficial vein on my lower leg, but the ultrasound showed that it went all the way up. If you have consistent discomfort, please get it checked out and deal with it while it's still manageable!
@@zoeydeu2261 it was! recovery was pretty quick, only had to wear bandages and a compression sock for a few days, now I'm only left with tiny scars where the incisions were made.
Was nice to see you talk about this. I had my left leg vein stripped way back in 2003 (I was only in my early 20s) and a phlebectomy on my right calf following a couple years of symptoms including phlebitis which I had been managing moderately by wearing graduated compression stockings. The recovery from that procedure was harsh and required a general anesthetic. I agree wearing stockings daily are uncomfortable and also left me with skin issues and itching. I managed to go almost 20 years without major problems until a couple years ago and a couple of months ago had my right saphenous vein removed via rf ablation. This was a much easier out patient procedure done under local, the difference was night and day in terms of recovery, only needing a week and I was exercising again within one month. Unfortunately I still have some skin issues on my calves from some superficial veins and swelling of my feet which I think could be solved with sclerotherapy. I will investigate this option soon.
I've had spider veins for many years. I just recently had scleratherapy (2 rounds) and the results were great. Unfortunately I had to have many needle injections just because of the way my veins are connected. It was so very painful so my dermatologist tried a laser for round 3 and it was so much better. I hope the results are as impressive as scleratherapy. The hose were almost impossible to get on but they make my legs feel good. Bought the Jobst brand.
Hi Dr. Dray, the specialist I saw had me do a venous closure procedure before treating the spider veins. I’m curious if you could talk more about that procedure and how it differs from the options you discussed. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. My relative had very high cholesterol and had vascular surgery on both legs, top to bottom, carotid arteries, and a plastic aorta. This was when the inscions where made on the entire leg. She suffered terribly. I am so thankful now that medicine has improved drastically. Looking good in the neighborhood! Keep it up! Happy FriYAY!
Sounds like your relative had arterial bypass surgery on aorta and femoral or iliac arteries, which is used for blockages of arteries, very frequent in carotid artery (neck) and in lower limbs, caused by atherosclerosis (cholesterol and calcium type deposits which occlude the artery). Dr. Dray is talking about leg venous insufficiency. These are two very different medical issues, the first one (arterial) being more serious.
I do suffer from this, I do use compression stockings and love them. Highly recommend them, especially when sitting for a prolong period of time. Greatly appreciate your videos Hun, so informative.

My husband retired from the marine corps. He had bulging and varicose veins in his ankles for years before he retired from the extreme physical requirements.
My father and his sister have terrible varicose veins and I unfortunately inherited them. I never developed anymore more than spider veins until I had my twins 4 years ago. Postpartum, I felt pain and stinging. Only to see a large bulging vein going up my right thigh. Now my left has developed the same. I am now desperate to get them taken care of as they are uncomfortable.
Ohhh...I have one tiny bit of protruding vein on the back of my right calf... it's been there for almost 10 years and so far it hasn't gotten worse (or gotten company), but it freaked me out like all heck when it appeared. Varicose veins are such a nightmare. Got plenty of spider veins on my thighs, though...but at least, those aren't painful!
I’m 35 and I have a lot, it’s painful at times and it also brings down my self esteem, I always have to hide my legs with certain clothes that I wear because I have really bad bulging veins behind my right leg and I hate seeing it, and it also makes me scared because I’m afraid one day if something sharp is to scrape on it, it will be a disaster!!
Thank you so much for the info, if portion of vein is cut off what happens to the rest of that vein and is it still functional? What creams or oils can I use after vein op?
Would you please do a video on topical steroid withdrawal? There are couple people on TikTok who are filming their journey with this and it looks terrifying. I’d like to know how this can happen under medical care and who is at risk.
Removing damaged veins that collect blood and don’t return it properly improves circulation: you can see how the ankle ulcer in one of the Images was able to heal treating the vein.
I've always wondered, why the tissue these veins used to supply, isn't basically 'starving', after the veins are removed. It's just weird, that you can just take them out with no harm.
@@DrDrayzday Thanks so much for explaining it; to me, removing a vein seemed counter-intuitive. But since it’s a non-functional vein, not doing its job, it’s better not to have it-pooled blood could lead to a clot! NOW, if insurance companies will accept the fact and cover the procedure in bad cases such as the one with the ulceration in the image….!
I have very painful varicose veins, especially on one ankle where I twisted it very badly. I actually have to take pain medication for my achy veins, or I can't sleep sometimes. I wish i could afford one or some of these procedures. My veins were inherited from my mother; she had the same problem.
If it is painful, it sounds like it is medically necessary to do something, so there is a really good chance that a vascular surgeon could bill this to your insurance. Life is too short to ignore problems that could jeopardize your long-term circulation/mobility...anyeurism or blood clot in the legs would really put a damper on things.
Hello Dr.!!! Plz do a video on it itchy and flaky eyebrows. It's been over a month since I started experiencing this issue and it really stresses me out. It would be really helpful if you explain the causes and treatment of this issue! Btw I really enjoyed Ur video. Stay safe 😍
I had that for 40 years, trying everything. I started using "Nizoral", available OTC at your drugstore and all flakiness and itching was gone immediately.
Folks, you don't need to see a board certified dermatologist to treat spider veins. You also don't need an ultrasound to rule out underlying causes of spider veins. She is referring to the evaluation of varicose veins and yes, those other providers are appropriate. But if you just have spider veins and just want them to go away, it's perfectly safe to see a Nurse practitioner or nurse who has been trained to perform the procedure. A good provider will refer if the issue is more than just spider veins...
I got a really bad one behind my right knee with my second pregnancy!… so ugly I don’t wear shorts anymore… my doctor told me not to have it removed until I knew I was finished having children… I an 40 now… I might have it removed soon.
I suffer from this. People don't realize how much discomfort this condition can cause. I've been wearing compression socks for a few years now. Back in Sept. went to urgent care for pain in my upper leg turned out to be a superficial blood clot. I'm hoping I can go quite a few more years before I need any medical procedures done.

I wear thigh-high compression stockings. They have rubber grips that help them stay up on my chicken legs. The 20-30 mmHg compression pressure is where it's at. Athletic socks ain't enough. I HAVE to wear them in 4+ hour flights and hikes.
Hi, thank you for the video! I have an upcoming doctor's appoitnment about my legs since we have it in our family. However the question is if there is any way to have hand veins treated as well? My hands have a lot of bulging veins and they are painful and heavy and I cannot imagine living the rest of my life like this. I am only 30 yo. Thank you so much for any input. Your videos are great :)
I've had two rounds of the injections in my legs from two different places. the last time was 6 years ago. They told me during consultation that it wasn't for bigger veins. I wouldn't describe the results as much improvement. The skin yellowed for a while and spider veins changed color.
I’ve used Compression stockings for years particularly after numerous varicose vein sclerotherapy treatments by a vascular surgeon. I recently developed contact dermatitis from them and am faced with additional sclerotherapy. HELP? I’m using Sarna for sensitive skin and cera ve anti itch cream. But the compression stockings continue to be an irritant.
When I tried compression socks-no matter what the socks were made of-my shins would then itch all night and I read somewhere the compression socks could be the cause. At any rate, as soon as so stopped wearing them-no more itching. I shouldn’t have bought so many pairs-I thought I was going to be wearing them all the time!
It is embarrassing but me being short make my legs dangle on regular seats and chairs. Pressure in the side thigh area has given me some spider veins. 🤷
I have vericose veins and I’ve been seriously considering treatment. Which birth control can cause them because I am on birth control to help with my skin but I don’t want to be on it if it’s gonna cause worse varicose veins

I've never had varicose veins but had electric-shock-like pain from my groin to knee. I'm not overweight, don't smoke, am active. No visible redness, heat, or bulging. The vascular surgeon did an ultrasound down my leg that took literally less than 10 seconds and declared that I needed vein ablation. His explaination for my condition was either the fact that i use topical HRT, or I just inherited 'bad veins.' I relucantly went through with the procedure because of the pain, and I will say it has helped, but I'm still shaken by his instant 'diagnosis' and I still don't know why the pain happened in the first place and why I have the same sorts of pain all over my body.

Happy Friday Dr. Dray ☀️✨✨✨

Happy Friday, Dr. Dray 😊🤍🌸🎀

Hii dr dray... Is formaldehyde in sunscreen bad... Is it a myth that it may cause cancer.... Pleaseee reply

Thank you for this!
Happy weekend Dr Dray ...see you tomorrow x💙🤩
You too!
hope you all have a good weekend xo
Happy Friday
Dr Dray,
How can vein removal improve circulation? Isn’t REDUCING the number of veins harmful to circulation?
Removing damaged veins that collect blood and don’t return it properly improves circulation: you can see how the ankle ulcer in one of the Images was able to heal treating the vein.
I see that the appearance improves, but how about the long term function of the circulatory system?
Thanks anyway, I truly appreciate all that you offer us, and am a regular fan!
Where can you go to get fitted for compression stockings?
I have very painful varicose veins, especially on one ankle where I twisted it very badly. I actually have to take pain medication for my achy veins, or I can't sleep sometimes. I wish i could afford one or some of these procedures. My veins were inherited from my mother; she had the same problem.
If it is painful, it sounds like it is medically necessary to do something, so there is a really good chance that a vascular surgeon could bill this to your insurance. Life is too short to ignore problems that could jeopardize your long-term circulation/mobility...anyeurism or blood clot in the legs would really put a damper on things.
Happy Friday Dr. Dray and everyone! 😀
Happy Friday enjoy your day 🤗

Hello Dr.!!! Plz do a video on it itchy and flaky eyebrows. It's been over a month since I started experiencing this issue and it really stresses me out. It would be really helpful if you explain the causes and treatment of this issue! Btw I really enjoyed Ur video. Stay safe 😍
For now, maybe try and check her video from 2020, how to clear seborrheic dermatitis on the face.
@@db-gb5xi thnx a lot 🤗
I had that for 40 years, trying everything. I started using "Nizoral", available OTC at your drugstore and all flakiness and itching was gone immediately.
@@qtxusa will try that out! Thnx🤗
Bought my compression collant today and it is amazing, the pain on my legs was gone, till i got those off but it's still better than usual.
do you have any recommendations for compression stockings or leggings? where would you typically get fitted for that?
They can be uncomfortable too
And can lead to skin ulcers when you're older
Nice video thanks ❤❤
My mom has varicose veins,Is there any food and nutrition advice which helps with varicose veins,Can you make a video on this Topic.
Thanks for this!!!!
I had EVLA because the pain was so much. I was 28 yrs old.
I can’t recommend it enough, please don’t suffer in silence. I know how painful it is.
Hello madam
Is it okay to use bha and azelaic acid in the same routine ( morning routine)

My husband has severe venous insufficiency and is only 34

Dr Dray, how about bulging veins on arms and hands? Is there anyway to naturally get rid of them?
This can also be done on the hands.
What is the best treatment for African American skin
I wear thigh-high compression stockings. They have rubber grips that help them stay up on my chicken legs. The 20-30 mmHg compression pressure is where it's at. Athletic socks ain't enough. I HAVE to wear them in 4+ hour flights and hikes.
Can you also have them on your thighs? I have a small patch of purple veins on my right thigh that I’d like to get rid of.
The compression stockings have to be put on right or serious problems can develop.
Brilliant!
Go to a store that sells scrubs. Nurses wear compression knee highs all the time.
Thanks for very informative video Dr. Dray. Can Sclerotherapy be use for treating bulging veins on hands?
I've had two rounds of the injections in my legs from two different places. the last time was 6 years ago. They told me during consultation that it wasn't for bigger veins. I wouldn't describe the results as much improvement. The skin yellowed for a while and spider veins changed color.
Is it okay to use studying gel/ holding mousse everyday on frizzy hair? Will my hair shaft be still healthy?
I’ve used Compression stockings for years particularly after numerous varicose vein sclerotherapy treatments by a vascular surgeon. I recently developed contact dermatitis from them and am faced with additional sclerotherapy. HELP? I’m using Sarna for sensitive skin and cera ve anti itch cream. But the compression stockings continue to be an irritant.
When I tried compression socks-no matter what the socks were made of-my shins would then itch all night and I read somewhere the compression socks could be the cause. At any rate, as soon as so stopped wearing them-no more itching. I shouldn’t have bought so many pairs-I thought I was going to be wearing them all the time!
great video
Plz doctor plz tell me plz ??????cerave psoriasis moisturizing cream it’s safe for face Dry sensitive *very thin skin ?????plz answer me doctor.
It is embarrassing but me being short make my legs dangle on regular seats and chairs. Pressure in the side thigh area has given me some spider veins. 🤷
Member of the short club. It does suck for so many reasons, lol.
I have vericose veins and I’ve been seriously considering treatment. Which birth control can cause them because I am on birth control to help with my skin but I don’t want to be on it if it’s gonna cause worse varicose veins

Hi Dr dray. Does adapalene gel help at all with cumulative sun damage for someone who doesn't have acne and may not be able to afford tretinoin or a dermatologist?
Thanks for another great video ❤
Maybe check out her video, 7 ways to fade sun damage on the face and body. She does discuss retinol in it.
Any exposure to Venus Seal?
This is interesting, any chance there is nerve damage?
Where does the blood flow when you remove huge portions of veins?
Is sclerotherapy permanent?
