I'm glad you laughed. Most people don't get my sarcastic dry humor. But really I don't know why that happens in an empty lot. Happens to me often too in other videos.
Thanks so much for your support, Charles! I was going to do a portion of it yesterday but I procrastinate and didn't. LOL. I will do a portion today - I hope. So little time in the day!
Growing up in Kalihi, the two okazuya I used to go to was Toshi’s and Naka’s. Unfortunately Naka’s isn’t in business anymore. Living in Waipahu now, I haven’’t gone to Toshi’s in a long time. But watching this video, makes me wanna go there again. I just gotta find the time to do so.
Ono nostalgic grinds. The ginger senbei were pink in the day. The big thick one might have been coconutty. The mix might also have had seaweed and peanut. Basically the same base as a fortune cookie.
I know two places on are Video. Alicia's market & k's Bento 'Ya' The Bento in are Video Was cheap $3.90 then to $4.25 And to $6.00 They two Type Of other bento. Had Shrimp Cone sushi and A whole hot dog And used to cost $4.25 Anne as Aelicia's market I've never been there since the fire I love are Video Just remind me how old I am Just remind me how old I am.😇😎👍🤙
Misty you made me sooooooo hungry with all the ono food! I’ll take one of everything!!! Maybe not the sweet poke but everything else lol! Mahalo! Awesome episode! 😁🤙🏽
I lived near there so I used to go there all the time! Love Alicia’s! I want some now! But I live on the 9th Island now so I have to wait until Dec when I go home.
I don’t know if you’re from Hawaii Honolulu, Hawaii because I’m from Honolulu Hawaii if so, do you remember the strawberry candy they banana candy and chocolate it was taffy and it was a lollipop. Do you remember that candy? So where could I find it so I could order it?
@user-ty6hd9by4p I was born and raised in Kalihi, but never had that candy. We were poor when I was a kid and rarely ate out. Or maybe it wasn't during my generation? I remember laffy taffy and the wave burst gum and hubba bubba but rarely did we have money for that kine stuff. Sorry.
Out of all the places ypu mentioned, I've only been to Alicia's. Someone took me there because this person wanted me to try Alicia's poke bowl. So I did. It was ono!
Awesome...why change if it's working for decades!!! Keeping the tradition makes the food worthwhile and people will keep coming back. Great video on great simple food...nostalgic!!!🤙
Yessss. Gulicks is one of my favs but I feel so spoiled I go there so often I forget to film. Usually when I cannot film i.e. lunch break etc but love Gulicks.
@@FoodFiend I think it is made special for them. It's a tofu Patty cutting to 4 pieces. I could find it in a grocery stores before. I can't find it now .??😥🤙
Oh gosh! I haven’t been to K’s in a long time, Misty! I was gonna plan on going Monday, but they’re closed!! Now I gotta wait until Tuesday… awesome food reviews!
Getting caught up here Misty. Honestly, I can't see paying a lot for okazuya food. My acid test is to look at the corn beef patties and if I just see white with a few flecks of red, that's a no go for me. Plus I'm real picky about shoyu chicken. If it's browned first in oil then braised in a shoyu, ginger, mirin sauce, I'm good - the browning somehow gets rid of that gamey out of the box chicken flavor. But no mind me, I old, lol! K's Bento-Ya: Does one still have to go super early like before 7 to purchase a bento? Eight dollars today for that amount of food is definitely a deal. Small kine side story - there was a counter lady, Aunty Bea who passed a few years ago. She was a member of Palisades Baptist, my former church and we had her memorial service there. The sanctuary was absolutely packed and had overflow into the courtyard. Seemed like most of the guests were her customers and they all remarked how super sweet she was. :* Alicia's: Another place so many folks rave about, especially their prepared meats. And yup, another place I've been meaning to try. Hooo, I heard that crunch of the roast pork. But I can also hear Dr. Chun saying, "Mark, why are your triglycerides up again?" Lol! And Ishiharaya: So sad, no words. :*
Me too. Too much potato in the hash I no like. Their shoulders chicken is not gamey. I hate gsmey chicken and I don't like the taste/smell. I know what you mean about your cholesterol. So far I'm good with Mt blood sugar. I eat salads the rest of the week. 🤙
Aloha Misty. The old school food establishments are the best, wherever you are in the world, but the ones in Hawaii look like they have great food. Sorry for the late response, my Mom is back in the hospital, not sure what's going on with her and here today is her 91st birthday (what a way to celebrate it in the hospital of all places!!!).
LOL! You have good taste buds, Misty! The K's Bento mystery item IS a tofu-egg patty. I had to ask the lady there a few years ago. It's my favorite item in the bento. Too bad they discontinued the large bento with shrimp and a cone sushi in addition to everything else in the regular bento.
@@FoodFiend Oooo, we're not related are we? I don't recall seeing you at family get-togethers. But "Pang" in China is almost like "Jones" or "Smith" in the US. Other than "Lee" or "Wong," "Pang" is right up there. Keep up the good work! You have a really calming voice....ASMR.
I remember old school Lilihas Masa’s Cafe.Field trip days at Kauluwela School used to get up at 6am and walk up there and by my lunch for less than $5 in the 70’s.I put the good stuff with their chow fun etc…
Was that the same Masa’s that had the “Masa’s Massive Plate Lunch”, where you got “MORE CALORIES FOR YOUR DOLLAH!” …and their tag line was “EAT ‘TIL YOU SLEEP”⁉️ I LUV’d that place.😃
Love Japanese style Chow Fun, need to get to Toshi's. Thanks for your review on all these places
Gotta get that Toshi's fix before they retire. They keep talking about it, but it hasn't happened yet. That will be a sad day.
I had to laugh when that lady parked next to you…always happens to me and I’m like wth….😵💫🤣

Yes! I remember my neighbor used to give the pink ginger ones and if I'm not mistaken had white stuff on top. Probably sugar.
@@FoodFiend Yes, those were the ones!
So Alicia's is the poke spot!!!! 😯😯😯
