It's fun to compare stuff but in reality, if any of us were to see these grilled cheese side by side we'd be like "Wow! Two grilled cheese!!" and be filled with joy being able to eat two grilled cheese.
F
Don't lie. We'd probably be filled with 1, 2 maybe 15 servings of grilled cheese
You are absolutely correct.
@ first and foremost kudos for spelling Caucasian correctly, don't know if you used speech to text or you knew and wrote the word down from memory but at least you got it correct. Second, you are correct my friend!
@ you don’t deserve anything because of your skin. Nobody is entitled to anything. This dude is successful because he’s talented and entertaining. Not because of his race. Get lost with that racist bs.
Frenchman here: We usually make the croque monsieur (pronounced croque meussieu, you're not far off Josh :D) with toast bread as it's much easier. My mum's recipe is with grated emmental and cream on the top and then stick it in the oven and it works just great. You didn't mention the croque madame with the sunny side up egg on top and that's just the best (add a drop of vinegar on the egg for fanciness). Love your content!
To make it easy for our US friends, pronounce it 'croc muh-siuh'. Also agree with you here the US version looks more like ours. The french version here looks like an italian bruschetta with another piece of bread on top. (both look delicious anyway Josh)
Pronounced what? My bad I can't hear what you typed bro
@@arpeegee_studio French here too ! Yes it looks more like a double bruschetta with cheese supplement. Same bread for both would have been a good match :D.
Pretty sure said sandwich has bèchamel on it not mornay
Morney sauce instead of just Bechamel is very weird
My mum recipe was sandwich bread, bechamel, ham, grated emmental, close it, then bechamel and emmental on top, in the oven to cook it, no toasting
I've never had a croque monsieur, but it looks delicious. That being said, if you toast some bread and melt some cheese, I'm all about it. Bonus points for a bit of tomato soup on the side.

I had this at an open air restaurant close to the University in Austin almost 50 years ago. I have been making it ever since. Sourdough bread, cream cheese, Emmentaler, and tomato slices. Delicious! Of course there are many variations and I have made many of them.

my dad is french but moved to england as a young adult, he’s a chef and food is one of the ways he brings france to us. this sandwich means so much to me because it’s so good and super nostalgic. i really appreciate this :)))
I once got a Croque Madame, which is a Croque Monsieur with a small circle of the bread cut out and a poached egg nesting within. It definitely made the sandwich even better.
French here: it’s not a croque madame, a sunny side up egg is supposed to be on top of a croque monsieur
@@yeeheehoo you're right! Same here in Belgium!
@@yeeheehoo The Monsieur is dipped in egg before being cooked (Sometimes, almost like a French toast), and the Madame is when the Egg is cooked and placed onto the sandwich.
Try making your own. No need to go out for them. Even if you use pedestrian ham and just sharp cheddar and Swiss as your cheese choices they taste great. Comte is my preferred cheese.
@@Kingfisher1215 I had to make one in culinary school. Pretty darn good. Comte eh? I'll have to try that sometime.
Here in the Netherlands it’s very common for people to have a panini press at home for our version of a grilled cheese. We usually make them with white bread or any leftover old bread and always with ham and Gouda cheese.
Yeah but no; we just slap on any cheese we have leftover in the fridge.
I miss tostis!!
I'm much more of a salami grilled cheese guy. But yeah, we do the ham business. You'll also see a lot of people add some pineapple on the side. Maybe purely to enrage the italians, maybe cause Ham and Pineapple are delicious.
Cheese toasties are different because they are cooked in a sandwich toaster which seals the sides shut
Yup. Gotta get the breville out!
Oui
Not always mate
Yep, the texture is completely different, the inside gets way hotter, and if you use tomatoes you can get a little charred roast tomato flavour going into the crust as the centre heats up to the level of a nuclear reactor.
@@AlienMidget123 Agree. A cheese toastie is still a cheese toastie if you do it under the grill, in a pan or a in panini press.
The way me and my friend likes to make a grilled cheese sandwhich is with provolone cheese, and white American cheese, (not the same as normal american!) On sour dough, Cook it the same withe butter grilling like in this video, and it is TO DIE FOR,.
While good with the classic tomato soup/bisque, and you'd never think it , but having a side of raspberry preserves/jelly to dip your sandwich is compliment the cheese so well, you'd never think it would be good, it probably sounds weird, but NO that jam with the provolone+white american grilled Cheese sandwhich is SO great. if anyone sees this comment, try it! you will not regret it!
You should try a Monte Cristo sandwich
You should try better English too
Something about the childhood nostalgia. It’s like the scene in Ratatouille when the critic takes a bite of the perfectly executed ratatouille and is transported back to his childhood. Beauty in simplicity
Simply as a video, this one was so entertaining. Made my day. Never thought to make a French version of grilled cheese. Merci.
Josh can make even a simple sandwich look hot af

I made a croque monsieur with a croissant from my local bakery.
It was a spiritual experience.
Then it becomes a "croissant au jambon", delicious! (it literally translates to croissant with ham lol)
Eating along as he's making food? That's life right there! You make awesome content and recipes!
A must try! Those looked so good!
A toastie (at least how I've always had it) is made in a toastie maker. It's a heated press that turns the bread into a sealed sandwich. Otherwise it's just cheese on toast with a lid. No wrong way to make it. This is just my family and I make them. 😅
I really wanna get a toastie maker, they are so good. ham + cheese + tomato toastie is frikn amazing.
Beans and cheese in a toastie is nostalgic. Burns the mouth of you but wooo
Adding thin sliced onions into a grilled cheese sandwich also adds a giant level of flavor
Greetings from Sweden. Just got your cookbook, I really like it! Keep up the great cooking!
The american grilled cheese is the croque monsieur we'd make at home (with ham of course). The mornay sauce and sour dough is the type you'd expect when going for a quick lunch at a bistrot before heading back to work.
@ ah, I was wondering where your bigoted self was going to pop up again.
@ nice bait post lol
@ What is it that you think people watch cooking channels for?
@ Funny, I didn't see that anywhere in the user agreement.
Prepare yourself for all the comments about grilled cheese vs melts
The croque monsieur is a great sandwich, to enjoy culinarily with great taste and preparation. A great sandwich on it's own merit.
The american grilled cheese just takes you back to when you were a kid, times were simpler, and you only had to worry about getting homework done and when the next great video game would be released.
As a French, the croque monsieur brings me back to my childhood. But I get what you say
Dear Josh, Love it, thank you for posting awesome content, and your music choices are excellent. Carry on.
Looks so good😋
That’s an American croque-monsieur…
The basic croque in France is ham/cheese inside the toast slices and voila.
The mornay topping is for restaurants.
So your American grilled ham and cheese was actually close to what a basic French croque should be.
Ham slices and emmental/gruyère slices (or grated). Butter outside. That’s it.
This! I never had a croque monsieur with sauce. It was just ham and cheese, even at the restaurants I went to. Although, I do like a croque madame more, the egg is just so good with it.
A croque madame is also great
Cheers from San Diego California
Most of the time, I get a bechamel on top, even in frozen croque monsieur, there's bechamel and a "gratin" on top So i guess it depends on where you get your croque's
Yeah biggest difference from the American version is the cheese.
Yeah that first one was closer to what a croque monsieur is than that crazy complexion full of sauce
There's also the francesinha, from Porto, Portugal. It's a sandwich with: steak, ham, linguiça (a kind of sausage), topped with cheese and melted, and covered in a beer and tomato-based sauce and has a fried egg on top, too.
I was hoping someone would mention francesinha. Hands down one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten in my life.
Suddenly Portugal caralho!
goddammit that sounds good
didn't even know, obrigado ;)
That would be an interesting one for Joshua to try, and with the load it has, it would appeal to Americans , I guess?
by the way did you knew that francesinha literaly means litle french lady and it was inspired by croque madame witch is a croque-monsieur with a sunnyside up egg on top

It is my most nostalgia inducing food item. From having them at a special sunday lunch as a kid, to grilling them in one of those cast iron contraptions over an open fire at the scouts.
Been trying all sorts of versions ever since; with tomato and basil inside, grilled pineapple and bbq sauce, spicy ground beef, fried mushrooms and herbs, Italian deli meats, pulled pork.
And for my guilty pleasure quick-fix; 2 layers of cheese with ham and ketchup in the middle, nuked in a microwave and served with a dollop of mayo. Disgustingly good hangover cure.

The British toastie is identical to the American grilled cheese except we use cheddar cheese in the middle. I've made the American version with the American cheese - pretty good if you get a decent mature cheddar slice. I like all three but make the first two mainly because they are simple to put together. Also the American idea of pairing them with tomato soup - bloody genius!
I love being able to open a video of yours and immediately hit the like button cause I already know it’s gonna be amazing
Totally awesome & easy to watch cause your vids are somewhat shorter way to go THX
ooh if so, I wanna see you make a Mozzarella in Carrozza or a Welsh Rarebit
at least watching this video is a bit refreshing after Gordon's disaster on that one hehe
For the French version, you can try some sour cream inside, just a little for more sweetness ! 😁
ooo, that sounds amazing
I just saw someone talked about it. And bifana too!! Amazing! 😀
That does look amazingly delish
When I was little, I always thought that croque monsieur was a fancy and expensive french dish, but it turns out it’s completely the opposite 😂
Man I would love to see how he makes a Francesinha which is the portuguese version of a Croque Monsieur.
Just made it. Delicious!
I learned that you can sub out mayo for the butter when toasting the bread and it IS a game-changer. Crisper, crunching bread and the egg and oil component adds to the flavor.
I usually make toasted sandwiches with cheese, ham and mayo. It's delicious.
a more fair comparison would have been an equal amount of work for both sandwiches because the croque monsieur takes like 3x the work of just putting buttered bread, cheese, and ham on a pan
Actually, us brits have something called a Welsh Rarebit. It's basically toast with mornaise (or a different cheese sauce) on it popped in the oven until bubbling. It's often eaten as either breakfast or lunch.
im from ireland and my mum makes that its so good
I love Welsh rarebit!! I had no idea it came from the UK

Joshua makes everyone’s day even better. If only he can send some grilled cheese
In this context, I'd like you to consider my absolute favorite meal: the dutch 'tosti': bread with gouda cheese and ham, in a panini press. It's the best. Serve with mayo or ketchup. I'm actually surprised it's not so well known in other countries
Mijn vriend waar is de curry
I love eating my grilled cheese just like that, always with mayo. I usually don't like mayo but it goes so well in a grilled chesse.
Bought your book, bro. Loving it.
The end is always so much fun lol
add two over easy eggs on top of the Croque Monsieur and you got yourself the equally delicious Croque Madame.
I'll have you know that a cheese toastie is actually a Dutch thing, and it's called a ham kaas tosti (ham and cheese toastie basically) you forgot the 3rd contender Mr. Weissmann!
Tbh I think you'd have a hard time finding a country on this earth who didn't have the idea of sticking some cheese in some bread and warming it up...
Grilled Swiss with Kosciusko mustard is what Mom always made me. It's fantastic!
English guy here, we have a slight variation, there's the standard "cheese toastie" which is done using a specific device called a toastie maker, if you look it up you'll notice that the edges and the centre are sealed so that each half is a triangle shaped pouch, made so that the filling doesn't spill out of the edges.
Otherwise when we make a toasted cheese sandwich we don't usually cook it on a pan, we'll either use a sandwich press like a breville, or we'll put it in the oven and toast it that way, but pan cooking is not so common for our toasted cheese sandwiches over here.
That and wealsh rarebit
Hi Joshua. We have francesinha in Portugal .. basically we took the French level to a next level by adding sausage , steak and a spicy sauce .. the best ones are in Porto.
That French grilled cheese is looking real good over there but there’s nothing like the American classic 😋
Yeah, but your stomach is gonna hurt after you eat enough cheese.
my mouth is watering rn
Excellent
Here in Spain we have "sandwitch mixto" Witch essentially is also a grilled cheese with jam. When some places what to get fancy they cover it with bechamel ans cheese and broil it. So, kinda a middle ground.
OK this sounds really good, I need details what bread cheese and jam should I use
I just realiced i meant ham, just like in the video.
But maybe i've invented something even better xD
I feel like grilled cheese is a snack and croque-monsieur is a dish. I totally get the childhood nostalgia you mention about your grilled cheese : we French kids have the same feeling about croque-monsieur ;)
Dropped the hardest edit of this year about some grilled cheese sandwiches and thought I wouldn’t realize
I'm not sure what is better, the culinary skills or the video presentation. Both impeccably well done....pun not intended.
The "Croque Monsieur" is pretty accurate but we actually use bechamel instead of the sauce you make
Mornay sauce is literally just bechamel with cheese melted into it. It is a common addition even if "traditional" is technical only the bechamel.
"A Mornay sauce is a béchamel sauce with shredded or grated cheese added"
@@nathanielholzgrafe5274 Mornay sauce is bechamel with grated cheese AND egg yolk, what he make is just a cheesy bechamel not a proper mornay sauce.
@@Shinseiki555 I’m afraid you are incorrect. A quick Google will confirm. You can find Mornay recipes with eggs to affect texture and richness but the base recipe is just bechamel and cheese.
@@nathanielholzgrafe5274 A quick Google of French source for the mornay sauce proves me right and even the resources for people passing the chef's diploma in France tell us to add egg for the mornay sauce
traditionnal french croque-monsieur is made with bechamel sauce, but actually any non pro cook will make them without it, i think your american grilled cheese is much closer to the basic croque monsieur than your other version despite the fact it looks really great
Josh is right, traditional croque-monsieur is made with Mornay sauce, which is basically béchamel with cheese, and I swear I don't know anyone who makes them otherwise here (France), pro cook or not. To me, three things differentiate a grilled cheese from a croque-monsieur : ham (obviously), Mornay or cheese-topped béchamel sauce if you're lazy, and being cooked in an oven. I feel like grilled cheese is a snack and croque-monsieur is a dish, if that makes sense.
Facts! The French friends I've spoken to don't chuck the sauce on as it means you need a knife and fork to each a sandwich, which is of course, silly.
@@SuperDan2105 You're supposed to eat a croque-monsieur with a knife and fork because when it's done the right way you get it right from your oven/broiler and it's literally too hot to handle ;)
C’est vrai
@@Aspett0 well, not totally cooked in an oven, because you need to toast the bread before cooking the sauce, but again this is more of a fancy sandwich than what we're used to cook here. I invite you to see Phillipe Etchebest's video about it
i love that you openly accept nostalgia and simplicity in foods despite variance in quality of ingredients as a caveat to this comparison
Mouth watering yummy looking grilled cheese!

I went to a small restaurant in Florence, Italy once and was a little tired of pizza and pasta near the end of my trip, so I ordered a grilled ham and cheese. Turns out Italian grilled cheese is just a plate of cheese and ham put under the broiler with no bread. American and French Grilled Cheese>> Italian Grilled Cheese.
Order a tosti next time in italy, thats what you want probably
If you asked for grilled cheese they might just have thought thats what you wanted , so i hope it was a misunderstanding otherwise its really weird
Because we don't call it grilled cheese. A "toast", is what we would call it. But if you want the real contender (and tbf, there's no contest), you need to go for Mozzarella in carrozza.
The beauty of the American grilled cheese is in its simplicity. It's always quick and cheap to toss together, but you can also always step your game up with ingredients and prep.
I do my grilled cheese on English muffin bread with a slice of American cheese, provolone cheese and Gouda. Use garlic butter if I'm feeling frisky, and add a fried egg if the mood strikes. Yup, going to go cook now. Great video Josh.
My hot take: A grilled cheese is bread and cheese only. The addition of any other ingredients, make it a melt.
As soon as I saw the ham, I was like this is a melt.
For a french, you just did 2 croque monsieur. The left one, the one you'd make at home, as a basically slightly fancier ham and cheese sandwich (because hey, you toasted it, worth the points for fancyness), the other one would be more "restaurant style", since no self-respecting restaurant would serve you the basic grilled cheese-like croque monsieur.
I would love to see your take on a Welsh Rarebit🏴
The whole family loved the surprise taste test Man, thanks. I learned a few simple tricks to improve other foods, like adding cheese gravy and ALWAYS toasting the buns. Thank you. We went with the class American for the win, much to my surprise.
When you offer toast with melting cheese you can never go wrong! Those who don't use it are wrong, because it's super tasty, and what can I say about the porn food effect!
French croque-monsieur are exactly your American grilled cheese version. The other one is just a fancy version but not something you would eat on a daily basis
Can't say "exactly". No one would put cheddar in Croque Monsieur even for "daily basis" unless you're called McDonald

A lot of things are put in a grilled cheese in America. The just cheese one is usually a meal for small children that adults sometimes enjoy as well. But adult versions will either add stuff with the cheese and or add a dipping soup.

You should try doing the northern Italian version of grilled cheese, it’s called Frico and it’s very popular in the small mountain villages
In Brazil we have Queijo Quente e Misto Quente (something like "Hot Cheese" and "Hot Mixed").
Traditionally we had the Cheese Sandwich and the Ham Sandwich (Sanduíche de Queijo e Sanduíche de Presunto)... When someone wanted a grilled one they just asked for a hot one... Someone somewhere just asked to mix both, so the Mixed one has born (Misto)... When another someone asked to grill it become the Misto Quente. The most popular one in the current days.
Where I live it's made with Queijo Prato (a Brazilian cheese that I'm sure isn't a thing outside Brazil), across the country you can found it with other cheese variations like Mozzarella, Curd Cheese or some kind of Minas' Cheese.
The only certain it's that all these variations are better than American Cheese.
