Gutted for you. I had to move my tank just over a year ago to our new home.. I put all my coral and 100% of my tank water from a 130L tank in poly containers, luckily i lost nothing in the move. The trick being keeping as much tank water as you can.
I’m so sorry for your loss, loosing anything like that is hard. Corals and fish are so beautiful and I think we all feel guilty when we loose them, even if it’s not our fault or out of our control. You did the best you could with the resources you had. Glad you had some things survive. I get so frustrated sometimes with this hobby, but there’s something about it that keeps drawing me back in. Keeps me pushing forward and finding myself enjoying it again. You will bounce back from this and I hope you are able to get the tank up and running smoothly again.
Moving a tank is a headache. I know it’ll get better. Excited to see new progress as you rebuild! Good luck!!
I salute you! I'm so sorry for your loss but it is amazing to see you refuse to let this slow you down. Well done. I'm stepping out from keeping a 125 gallon freshwater aquarium and converting it to a saltwater soft coral reef tank. I hope to succeed in the saltwater aquarium hobby. Thanks 👍

This really made me think. It’s probably best to really deep clean your tank especially substrate in the months leading up to a move. That way you’re not worrying about releasing whatever’s been accumulating in there since you started it.

Looks great! Loss is always is a bummer but defiantly a part of the hobby.
Moving a established reef is sole destroying but life dictates. At least the hard parts over. This is the time to correct all the things that used to bother you in the tank before.

I moved my tank last week since we relocated 20 minutes out of town. Glad to say it all survived. Sorry about your luck

Just moved a 75 gallons all by myself. Some corals didn't make it, but all my fish and inverts are still there for now, keeping my fingers crossed.
I also just recently moved. I am so sorry to hear about your losses. If it makes you feel better, you are not alone! I believe my issues were temperature related because I had the fish all in smaller containers and the temp changes happened very quickly. I had a couple fish that jumped into buckets or hid in rocks and they did great. The fish I was able to isolate into smaller containers all did not fair well... Please keep the honest content coming! Nothing about any hobby is all rainbows and unicorns :-)
That’s unfortunate. But I guess that’s part of the learning process. Hopefully you’ve learned something from this. Just like I will when I eventually move out.
Sorry to hear bro I had the same problem when I moved, except I lost all my corals. I made a promise to myself to sell everything except my clowns and tang next time I am relocating. Best of luck

Sorry for your loss it is hard moving an established reef ,it's all about planning and forward thinking . Fellow hobbyist or Lfs for safe keeping of livestock even, then pick up when tank is ready , probably would still get mini cycle . Having fresh heated salt water and new sand cleaned and ready to go in. Used your original bacterial filter media with the fish and corals , added the rocks from tank back and used dr Tims or bright well bacteria to give the system a boost to help reduce any ammonia, nitrite. Once again sorry about the losses . Made up its picking up now looking good .

No, the important thing is he should have enlisted a professional aquarium shop or person that is well versed in tank moves. His negligence and “stress” killed poor animals, this is not the first time he’s almost wiped out his tank... some people should just not be in the hobby.

Since I'm renting, I also fear the time I will have to move. But I am planning to upgrade when this happens. Renting the new place a month earlier. Setting up the new system, with well in advance prepared sand and media from the sump of the old system. Then moving all the rock and live-stock at the last possible moment. All this won't be cheap, unfortunately.
My nem crab spent 30 minutes on the floor and lived. Crabs lol.

Agreed could have been avoided. If arent producing enough water go to the store and buy all their distilled water. You could have kept everything elive in a cooler with a heater and wave maker while you got everything ready.
Yeah, not sure what he was thinking would happen with this plan, it was a recipe for disaster from of onset.

moving tank you must move the water as well, if you start with all new water you will get losses, disturbing the sump and sand will also cause some bacteria and co-pods to die, water changes for first moth after move very important as to lower nitrate level due to bacteria and copods deaths

Hey I have a question, I bought a hammer head coral for my bfs tank and it just died. 300 bucks down the drain he tried a lot of things so it can go back to normal but what else can we do?
It is really tough to know. All you can really do is keep your water clean and parameters balanced, acclimate slow, and get the lighting right (not too high usally). Even then sometimes hammers unexpectedly melt. Sorry for your loss.
Its the worst feeling I moved 1400 miles in the middle of summer last year and had the same problem they got to hot!:(

Why didn't you have something like a 20 gallon Quarantine Tank up and running at your new place? You could have grabbed two 20 gallons from pet Co. One for Coral and one for fish.
That sucks next time maybe give the fish to the fish store move the tank then take them back
I want to move all of corals and fish and everything that moves, crabs, stars, snails to a new tank
I want move sand and old Stones, 3 years, for the new tank. I go upgrate 55G-200G tank.
I don't know if is right or wrong to do these, peharps some old sand, and some old water can make easy the aclimation of fish & coral, for the new home.

Why didn’t you put the fish into a shop tank for a while then get them once the tank was re setup ?
Easiest way is to have a smaller tank at your new location for your fish and corals ready to go for a few days at least if not a week or two. You can even use storage bins from Walmart for $5 each instead of an actual tank. I have done it and it works great. Didn't lose anything. Terrible planning and a terrible waste of life.
very sad, next time prepare better. You should try running a tonne of carbon in a situation like that. And also have a really good ro unit with booster pump and membrane upgrade kit.
Seriously you could have made 150 litres or more or pre mixed salt water.
Damn bro. I also think if you had 100% new water waiting you would’ve been fine. The water was super toxic probably from fish waste / coral toxins etc from the stress.
Also the reason I don’t keep anything too delicate because I know I’m bound to move and want to keep all my livestock.

Sorry for your loss but moving a tank will take some of your corals or what else. I moved my 100 g just 10 ft and lost 2 corals and 1 fish.
Then you definitely did something wrong, I’ve moved tanks over 50miles and lost nothing
Did you rinse the hell out of your sand? Scrub and dunk your rock repeatedly to release all of the detritus? Corals and fish should be moved in a separate container to live rock because of all the detritus that will shake loose during transit. If you follow these steps you can avoid a mini cycle and most, if not all losses.

I've been in this hobby a long time, and my brother owns a shop in Anchorage, Alaska.. We moved his entire home into that shop.. And never seen carnage like you had. If there is a way to move a tank "correctly".. It's the opposite of what you did.

Maybe don’t bother setting up another tank if you’re having to constantly move. You killed your fish and coral because you had to move. Not fair to the animals that depend on you. Their lives are cut short for your convenience. Very sad.

dude seriously what happened! A reefer with your experience should of known better! Sorry for negative but I've moved tanks loads from buying break down builds and it really isn't that hard with the right planning.
That is what I thought. It is much harder than you think once you do it.
