Ah memories. Breakfast every morning on my way to work at el periódico La Mañana was churros, chocolat and a copa of brandy. Best way to start the day. Thanks guys, another great one.
Great to see you both out and about! Glad you bigged up the local churros place. Best wishes and...until we meet (hopefully on a tour).....Muchas Gracias Tony
You two are such a joy and lift to the bummer day or moment! Now, I know what the Spanish have known to lift one into a need of simple pleasure - that Luscious dunking of Churro or Purro in a very generous cup of chocolate! I never knew! Yum and thank you to this decadently, delightful tour of more cuisine of Spain. Such a fun outing of the selected stops for Churro & Purro of Madrid. What a pleasure you bring. Thank you again, from Missouri.
Churros are also a good post-party and hangover remedy, since churrerias open so early in the morning I've always gotten them after partying all night and waiting for the public transport to open. I think San Gines is so famous because of that (on New Year's Eve it is allways full!).
I’m not a big fan of churros but I still loved this video! I love these types of videos in which you compare different Spanish cuisine from different outlets in Madrid!!!

Hi James and Yoli!...We finally made it to Madrid from Montreal to visit this beautiful city and while here, we have had the chance to taste test churros that you had suggested in your video. Wow! Thanks for your suggestion. We found the churros at Churreria las Farolas near the Stn Alfonso X111 on Calle San Nazaria really delicious and all that you had claimed they would be. They were not oily and left no aftertaste; as well the chocolate was not too sweet and quite silky and pudding-y. Yum! from Madrid, Guillermo and Mary. PS: Say hello to Lucia for us!
I recall doing both historic (aka tourist) locations and I was not very impressed. Back in the day, they didn’t need to try to do good business because the tourists were always there. This may be insightful as some of the best meals and experiences I have had were outside of these tourist areas. It was so good to see you both, and I am glad you are doing well.
That's true and believe me, we as locals are the first ones to dislike tourist traps because they make our traditional dishes look bad. You could come to Spain and think that paella is that horrible pre-cooked, heated in a microwave thing they'll serve you in the main square and it's not. They also make us spaniards look like the greedy owners of those places and we are definitely not. So I hope that the internet, videos like this one and google reviews will help tourists to find the real places and avoid the scams.
I am crossing my fingers that by Fall of 2021 we can once again travel. We had plans to go on your Madrid tour in March 2020. If Spain is open this fall we hope to see you and Yoly!
Mm love this video. Thank you for keeping us motivated to travel. When we went to Madrid, tried Chocolat and San Gines. We liked Chocolat a whole lot. Hard to find Spanish-style churros here at home!
James/Yoly, our family of 5 are on holiday in Madrid for 6 days and have been watching your videos for the past few months as research. They have been invaluable. Today we visited Los Farolas near Quintana and had amazing churros/purros and hot chocolate. We tried San Gines earlier this week and think Farolas are better! We have also tried a number of tapas restaurants/bars on your recommendation and none have disappointed. Thanks for all your work and great content!
Watching from the Philippines! I'm literally drooling seeing your reactions while munching these churros! I'm craving it! Hope to see you both when I get there soon.

Just found you two & suddenly you're my favorite UA-cam channel. I have a couple of questions down below....I was planning a trip to Madrid but then the pandemic hit. I've been to Spain before; I spent time in Cadiz as a boy & saw the entire Mediterranean coast up to Tarragona. In addition to Madrid I'd like to also someday see Las Palmas de Gran Canaria where my great-grandmother was from, so I have a couple of questions based on that, please: Is there such a thing as a Canarian restaurant, and if so, are there any in Madrid? Thanks so much you two, & keep up the wonderful work!
I've just discovered you today and you guys are great, so natural and lovable. I love when a foreigner falls for Spain and our culture and shows it so effectively and passionately and nicely. I have lived in Madrid for years and you are so spot on! If you ever come to León (beautiful city, beautiful province, amazing food) I offer myself to be your free guide!
Gracias por sugerir Chocolat. Aquí estoy en la primera visita a España en Madrid y experimenté muy bien este lugar (y también Casa Toni de otro video). Gracias.
When I'm in Spain I always have one churro at breakfast next to my egg and bread ( and cheese and salami). The hotel I always go to make very yummy ones, but I'll be honest, I never dip in in either chocolat or coffee. A few weeks ago I was in Scheveningen the Netherlands, and I got churros and hot chocolatemilk. I dipped it in there and that was VERY nice
I know that you've already talked about the bitter Spanish coffee experience (torrefacto) but I, as a coffee lover, would like to know what are the best cafes in Madrid where there is very good to excellent coffee ☕️. Any place that combines that with good bakeries and a nice decor would be wonderful. Looking forward to one of your next videos on this topic 😀
The more you travel, the more you see that there are so many wonderful things in the world. It can be difficult to settle for something great when you can see that there could always be something better just round the next corner. Travel can sometimes simply be about a quest for perfection. This quest for perfection that we are looking for,we found just now in your video so the only that we have to say on you: Huge thank you and keep going!!!!!!
¡Hola, Yoli y James!... Greetings from sunny Portland... I always enjoy you videos, but the beginning of today's one made me laugh out loud... Hmmm, this chocolate looks amazing (I am not much for sweets, but chocolate is a must)... I would eat it with a spoon too, Yoli :D

@@mswsamrazik It's a great idea. We get asked about Spanish subtitles often, but for the moment, we don't really have the budget to pay a translator, and me, as a translator, I don't have the time to do them myself... Time will tell! :-)
Do you guys have buñuelos? They are pretty common here in Valencia as much as churros. I love them both. You totally got me wanting some churros today! So yummy.
When we are in Madrid we always stop by San Gines and when we go up to Bilbao we look for the neighborhood bar for churros. Not sure why we never look for the smaller places in Madrid. But now we know. Thanks.
Hi James and Yoly! Thanks a lot for the great video! You're true heroes to hit so many places in one go! I remember I barely made it through chocolate con 6 churros at San Ginés and I was really hungry before going there:)
Haha that brought to mind that when we were in Seville last, we were served hotel breakfast with churros in the Chinese congee station! Spanish thought churros are the same as Chinese Yaotiao. Actually Yaotiao is savoury and not sweet (although there is another version is sweet called ox tongue pastry) but I thought that was so very sweet and considerate of them. 😂
Hey James, great video again. I just noticed something that could be interesting to mention. Las farolas is a small chain operating 7 shops around the comunidad de Madrid
Missing churros sooooo much! For me, the best churros are in Mayoma, right next to Avenida de América bus station. Super delicious porras and churros and thick and not diluted chocolate. 😋
Great stuff! I miss churros so much. I don't know if this is done all over Spain, but the churrerias in Barcelona also fry other stuff including potato chips, and I found that sometimes the churros had a bit of that fried potato flavour. I really loved that. I don't think I could pick a favourite between churros and porras, but I will get the latter if they've just made a batch.
Churros are one of the things that I miss the most about my country, Argentina. I was so happy to have churros in Barcelona when I was there and have them dipped in chocolate in 2019!!! The churros in Argentina are shorter and chubbier, and filled with dulce de leche. They also come bañados en chocolate ! And I have the best memories eating a churro at 6 am after getting out of a club in Argentina! I love your videos and cant wait to visit Spain again!
Hola- Well my family is from Andalucia from the Costa del Sol area. First we season them at the end with sugar and Cinammon. Also we make circular ones called Tejeringos. Take care. J
Here in southern California I used to have them as a kid every winter season, they are sold at a minimum quantity of 6, the usual was a dozen and when ordered sometimes they give you extras :) we certainly did not have "Porras" but depending on the cook and establishment they would come out thinner or thicker with some soft dough in the center, I had never heard of eating them with such thick chocolate, they were usually pre sprinkled with sugar but you could ask them not to of course. However, more research is required by an in-person inspection to decide between churros and Porras lol. Great video!
I’d love to know if you have a churro recipe! I’ve tried them recently from a classic choux pastry but I never realised they are actually only made from flour, water and salt! Thank you. I’ve been watching your videos on a Spain cuisine binge for the past couple of hours haha! My belly doesn’t thank you, it’s rumbling like crazy!
I never thought about churros when I went to Barcelona the other year, and we certainly don't have anything remotely like that here in Hawaii. For sure, I will try it when I visit Madrid, hopefully soon.
Well, I was on vacation in Portugal last month and decided to take a one-nighter hop over to Madrid. Definitely had the churros. First one at Churreria 1902 Chocolateria, second at Valor. I really enjoyed the one at 1902 - hardly oily, it was crunchy and the flavor was fresh. For Valor, the churro was a little oily but it was fresh since I was there when they opened. The chocolate was good but not like 1902. I could probably drink the entire cup of the 1902 chocolate sauce. The Valor one, not as much. Thanks for the recommendations. I will have to spend a lot more time in Madrid when I return.
In Turkish we say Fried Dough Food ( Tulumba Tatlısı) instead of Churros and the taste is similar for those 2 desserts. But we never place tulumba tatlısı into chocolate. Mainly churros in Turkey is sold as street dessert food before entering to basketball or football matches stadium, alongside with meatball vendors and small intestine street food sellers. We turkish citizens adore baklava with pistachios, kadayif pistachios, havucburnu with pistachio.
You should try el brillante on the ronda de atocha. They’ve been going for years. I went in once just before covid and one of the barmen was the same as when I first came to Madrid over twenty years ago.
I was feeling hungry envious and jealous but then I remembered We’re off to Spain next week so now I know exactly what I’m gonna be doing on one day that’s for sure …yum yum yum I better book 4 seats on the plane home 😜 great vid guys thanks
James and Yoli: Really enjoyed the video. Was very impressed that you found "you tiao" (oil strip), churros' cousin in Hong Kong. As you said, "you tiao" is eaten with rice porridge. It is eaten only for breakfast and usually in hole in the wall restaurants, and not in fancy restaurants. How did you find out about it in Hong Kong?! It's not like you asked random people in the street if there is anything like churros in Hong Kong. Or did you?
Haha, great question. I had lead food tours with people from Hong Kong and when we tried porras, they told me that it was similar to something back home. So when Yoly and I were in Hong Kong we sought them out!
@@spainrevealed Haha, mystery solved. I was thinking that Spain Revealed is a worldwide conglomerate and has researchers all over the world. We had ordered churros from La Tienda and they are not bad. Our local Costco (LA area) occasionally has fresh porras. Of course it is not the same as as having it in Madrid.
My best memory of getting churros is in Gijon after staying out all night with friends on Dec 31st and ending up in a cafe or churreria around 7 am and having chocolate con churros with everyone else who was out that night. Of course, we were all in our early twenties so it was expected to stay out all night and finish up with churros. =)
You're just right on time guys! I was drinking hot chocolate and eating "hopia" for dessert! However, after eating I started craving for churros! Enjoyed eating with you Yolly & James! Thanks for sharing!😋❤😀
Thats interesting, here in bakersfield CA we eat churros as a snack, breakfast or even dessert. Its a all day thing here. Chocolate on churros is not that common but caramel is popular or even condensed sweet milk. We roll churros in a cinnamon sugar. I, as a churrerio, roll my churros in crushed cookies or cereals and get some amazing flavors. If you are eved in Bakersfield CA come look us up and try our churros.
My one and only "churros con chocolate a la taza" experience was as San Gines, but now I have other options to try when I am in Madrid again. I was surprised to see Kelis in your Skill Share promo. She had a very popular song here in the U.S. that is titled "Milkshake" (the word has a double meaning in her song). I was surprised to learn that she is a chef too. That was a lot of churros to taste in one video. I am going to guess that you were either one-with-the-sofa or had a nice long nap afterwards.
I heard you talking to some woman and Man ! you're fluent in Spanish .. you've got the accent down and everything , very impressive .
I lived literally a minute away from San Gines on my year abroad - I miss it so much - my wallet probably doesn't though! Wish I was there now...

I’ve always wondered, what kind of oil is used to fry the churros?
Some use olive oil, some vegetable oil. But I know some prefer vegetable oil as the olive oil imparts a strong flavour. I suspect most use vegetable.
More places to try, Had been to Valor and congrats on 100K subscribers plus, 125K soon.
We went to the Chocolatería San Ginés back in 2018 when we visited Madrid. Long line but it was worth await. Recommended by taxi driver.
Chicos, me encantan vuestros videos! Que ganas tengo de volver a Madrid y comer churros o porras ;-)
Hello
In Turkish we say Fried Dough Food ( Tulumba Tatlısı) instead of Churros and the taste is similar for those 2 desserts. But we never place tulumba tatlısı into chocolate. Mainly churros in Turkey is sold as street dessert food before entering to basketball or football matches stadium, alongside with meatball vendors and small intestine street food sellers. We turkish citizens adore baklava with pistachios, kadayif pistachios, havucburnu with pistachio.
Los churros españoles no se parecen absolutamente en nada.
You should try el brillante on the ronda de atocha. They’ve been going for years. I went in once just before covid and one of the barmen was the same as when I first came to Madrid over twenty years ago.
I loved "Choco-churros"!!! and if you come to Valladolid you must go to "Chocolateria El Castillo", they have the best churros in town.
Apuntado!
Is Chocolat the one on Calle de Sta. Maria and Calle San Jose?
Yes, that's it! Alfonso is a master :)
I love that you tiao means "oil strip"! Very descriptive! haha
We have always gone to San Gines. Now we need to try these others! You can get churros in Miami but we cover them in sugar. Sorry Yoly! LOL
hahaha - apologies accepted! ;)
Hello
Never tried,,, hope to this yr if we can come over from England
My best memory of getting churros is in Gijon after staying out all night with friends on Dec 31st and ending up in a cafe or churreria around 7 am and having chocolate con churros with everyone else who was out that night. Of course, we were all in our early twenties so it was expected to stay out all night and finish up with churros. =)
I visit San Gines during my every trip to Madrid
Hola, de que esta hecho el chocolate
You're just right on time guys! I was drinking hot chocolate and eating "hopia" for dessert! However, after eating I started craving for churros! Enjoyed eating with you Yolly & James! Thanks for sharing!😋❤😀
Cheers Gen!
Hi! Is any of these chocolate dairy free? Would love a thick dairy free chocolate to go with the yummy churros! I love your videos!
Hi! If you dunk it in sugar add also cinnamon. Tip from Portugal 😉
Amazing churos here are straight. No dipping in chocolate. It's taste good I like it.🍫
Thats interesting, here in bakersfield CA we eat churros as a snack, breakfast or even dessert.
Her class is very cool. And yes, we were stuffed afterwards. THough as you'll recall from the member's video, we shot stop 3 on a different day
Haha - I love Kelis' song! It was a trying day indeed -having chocolate con churros for lunch, crazy!
Congratulations on 100K!!
I was in Spain in 2019, Andalusia area, but I never had a churro with chocolate. Are they popular in that area as well?
Of course they are. In Seville, for example, the traditional name is "calentito" and not "churro".
Do you call them tejeringos as well?
@@spainrevealed No, that word is used in other places, but don't know where :(
@@spainrevealed En Málaga. Me encanta vuestro canal.
