I was at a high school jazz festival that another school was holding and my school's jazz band went. Alexa Tarentino held a clinic and played. It was awesome

Great sounding band, as I imagine it would be. When I was growing up, there was no jazz program at Juilliard, although many great jazz players had gone there: Miles, Tito Puente, Henry Mancini, Andre Previn, Nina Simone (who originally wanted to be a classical pianist), on & on.

there are so many good jazz musicians now a days coming out of the colleges yet 95 % will most likely find no way to support themselves thru performing alone

Arin Gokdemir Such is the nature of art in general. Not everybody who gets a degree will automatically sell platinum albums. Everyone wants to prove their salt, and as a result there are lots of people who are willing to invest in higher education like this, but percieved value of the artist by the consumers doesn't really match too well, and there's only so many gigs around. The result is a hyper saturated position that people who are hyper qualified fill.

I was told last year that I was the worst saxophonist at my school, but about a month ago Ernie Watts came and said he liked my playing but I'm still working on coming up and I still need to work on Jazz but don't know if I should work on counting (which I never learned.) or learning more blues and be bop scales to improvise on.

Thank you for watching -- keep on practicing and learning. Our jazz students find that knowing both music theory (the basics of rhythm, counting, etc.) and jazz history help them be well-rounded musicians in all genres.

So refreshing to see a "Kinder Gentler" Jazz school experience. I attended UNT in Denton in the 70's and it was a very macho-male dominated place with some very nasty people.(The Buddy Treatment) Great to hear teachers compliment students. That practice at NT was seen as making you weak. The "Whiplash" approach even if it works is not the way to go. Go Julliard!!! Much Healthier .
Over my long career I have found that nice people can be monster players.

WestTexas_ Idk just do ur research man I’m more of a public school music schools Like UNT. I’ve seen a video about this current actress (can’t find it rn otherwise I would have linked it) who absolutely hated it and it really took the fun out of acting for her. Which obviously everyone can relate to when your doing something on that high of a level it’s really easy to be stressed. Even tho she said she hated she did end up graduating and found success so I mean pick your poison ig. 🤷‍♀️

Juilliard is my dream school but that 8% acceptance rate is kinda scary. I’m a sophomore in High School and I’ve been playing Tenor Sax for almost 4 years. I’m trying to get into playing Jazz. My improve on a scale of 1-10 is like a 3 if I’m being generous. Any tips on how to better my chances of getting in?

At Juilliard, musicianship and artistry are developed as a means to engage and inspire our local and global communities. Juilliard creates countless pathways for students to explore. The link below is a video of the jazz song "Spain" played with the traditional Korean instrument "Haegeum".

You're supposed to be artists not professionals.. that's why all we hear in today's jazz is no more than a series of sterile academic exercises. You need to delve into your own soul to be able to find your unique voice in the instrument. The audience has already been alienated from Jazz not only because it is difficult to appreciate musically but it no longer moves their emotions.
