Went to see their live show in Manchester. They were both at Uni there, years ago. Lots of students in the audience, giving them grief. Audience interaction was hilarious, great night.
Your TV stations wouldn't have been able to screen it with all the profanity. It was the Yuppies who all loved it whilst the Working classes struggled to get by in life. You only have to look at the audience too see most went to Uni, paid for by the Working classes, who didn't bar some lucky ones.

We met Rik Mayall outside the Mayflower in Southampton after he'd been in New Statesman. He found out our son was into acting and theatre and just wanted to talk to him about it. The chauffeur kept saying "Come on Mr Mayall, we are late and have to go" and he'd reply "Sorry, they'll have to wait, I want to chat to this young man about his future in the theatre" A lovely bloke that couldn't have been more humble and kind to a young lad who now runs a theatre and has loads of acting awards.
Rik's improv and aid's sharpness that made the duo so great is personified in that last sketch\clip and shows why they were the nineties two Ronnie's/ Morecambe and wise/Deane and martin and VERY underappreciated in our time. Such love Prick and Viv xxx
I honestly love how when Adrian says "I'm beginning to understand why Stephen Fry fucked off," Rik's first reaction is a burst of genuine, uncontrollable laughter - the only time in this whole reel that we hear him laugh like that, and it's at his own expense - but as soon as the crowd laughs along and starts clapping, he realises they heard and got the joke too and immediately gets this look of egg on his face, knowing he's just been publicly roasted. If it had happened in rehearsal, I like to think he would've kept on laughing for minutes on end.
However many times I watch this it always has me in stitches, True British comedy at its very best, The witty brilliance, the timing , the interaction. It really doesn't get ant better than this. possibly my best all time on UA-cam, RIP Rik Mayall, thanks for the jewels you left us

Bottom is the best British comedy to this day, and will be forever. Rik and Ade are just the best!!
Absolutely shocked to hear of Rik Mayall death earlier this week. Watching Bottom won't be the same now without Rik. The comic and genius partnership that he and Ade had was just pure class. Britain has lost a comedy legend. #riprikmayall
