Pro tip: Spend HOURS on your demo reel. One of the reasons I just landed a corporate DP job is because of my reel that I sent in with my resume. I had a decent resume, but it was the 10+ hours I spent making and tweaking my reel that landed me my job. I know that's not specific for music videos. My boss still talks about how much better my reel was than people who've been in the industry longer than me. Make your reel COUNT.
@@Skater_Baron8 No worries! So a reel is your "greatest hits" basically. So grab your most eye-catching and complex stuff, put them to music, and then make them flow in a 3-5 minute video. Portfolio is usually your website or a link of all of your work or your best videos at least.
Speaking as a professional writer/editor for 47 years, yes, confidence comes by fiddling with your art every day. Soon you'll learn that all your work is private and nobody is looking over your shoulder. Seymour Papert said in Mindstorms that the most valuable lesson children can take from learning to program is a "debugging approach to life." Every project starts with scraps of crap, and if there's an underlying good idea, it will emerge.
I know this might seem not important, but I would say being physically fit, helps a lot with the way you shoot, you have more stamina to hold heavy setups.
I think the addition of the music video pro mini course is an answer to my prayers...I've been googling "music video course " for months now & haven't gotten anything worthwhile,...can't wait to join the entire FTFM program!! Thanks Parker...
Now this is some awesome info and I’m not even a videographer lol... I want to invest in a gimbal though .. thanks for sharing this awesome info with us ! Great tips
Thanks for these tips! We’ve been shooting our own videos-until we find someone whose work rocks and is in our area-so this helps us take our self-produced videos to the next level. 😎🙌🏾
Finally! Can’t wait to start watching! p.s If there’s any chance you come to visit Taiwan hope we’ll have the chance to work with you! Keep up the good work! Really helpful!
Hey! I'm a 19-year-old Filmmaker from Germany, I shot over 80 musicvideos over the last 3 years (my work is very wide spread, I also do imagevideos, commercials, weddings & more) but my main focus is on musicvideos. I also put out a demo reel every year since 2016 and also have a master demo reel I update on a regular basis. I know basically every music(video)-related person in my area and beyond and it's not that I have not enough requests to shoot musicvideos but people here just don't value the work and expect you to work for almost free or just for a few hundred bucks, so I couldn't even rent a point-and-shoot from that, which means certainly not a RED, anyways I shoot all of my musicvideos with my Sony a7sii I've had since 2016 and I also have every piece of equipment you could imagine, Gimbals, Rigs, Monitors, Tripods, you name it, I have it, so I think the production value is also not what's holding me back. You guys have any tips for me on getting higher paying clients? Greetings from overseas!
We watch your videos from Kazakhstan. Thank you so much, for what you’re doing. We consider you as our mentors. Our dream to shake your hands alive in the USA! I don’t know, will this happen in this life 😁
Parker, any news on your short sleeve hoodies. I use Sony Vegas 14 Pro for editing. I’ll be upgrading to 17 Pro soon. It allows for LUTZ. I have the Canon 6D Mark II which you recommend and the DJI ronin S as my gimbal. I will be purchasing your course because I’m very serious about this. I am a truck driver as my profession but I have taken on cinematography and photography as my love because of your channel and Peter McKinnon and some others. I just want to say thank you very much for the inspiration. I just used that song you used in your video in Japan To shoot my Childress Vineyards video I too have musicbed license.
I can't believe I have done every step mentioned in this video before watching it. I literally learned through experienced and figured out how to do it myself without tips from other people.
This was really helpful! I'm currently planning to shoot dance videos, and I was searching all over UA-cam for the best tips. You definitely delivered the best! I was also building my demo reel, so thanks a lot for these helpful tips. Thanks a lot Parker and to your team!
Hi, I'm a director and filmaker and I've find your channel amazing, one of the best all over youtube, and of course some tips are basically, but other are so particular, and even I'm a professionist since 2006, II take lot of tips for my videos. For example, how to make a slow motion and make it match with the normal speed! I didn't know before.. Even I never needed, I also didn't think to make it. You speed up the music and you make the singer sings faster! :D Sounds cool!
Thank you so mutch for the video! I'm just 14 but I'm so inspirited from your videos and i hope i can make in a peer of Years also good films and videos like you! You are my role model.
Priceless!! Thank you so much!! I have two-part question about the demo reel: 1) should I just consecutively add the clips or edit it "cinematically" and making it a sort of music video in itself? 2) if the lyrics of one clip are in a foreign language (or at least not in English) should I add subtitles, so people know what it's about?
My head exploded when you said "play the song at 250% speed and film at 60 fps, then slow it all down in post to 24fps....CAN YOU DO A TUTORIAL ON THIS!?!
Actually..it means..u need to speed up ur slow song by 125% and export ur mp3, then ask your artist to sing in that sped up song..and u gotta shoot that in 60fps and then in post make it 24 fps keeping original slow..song in ur timeline....hope u get it..So it looks the artist is singing in slow..motion..
Just shot my first music video for a local artist and am already planning on how to improve for my next one after watching this. Love your content man!
Awsome tips! Awesome video! Saw some of my favs in there, One Voice! Maggie Scott, Lyza, Maddie, Gardiner, All so talented and your style, very captivating!
Guys this video is amazing... Started dipping my toe, but one thing stuck out.... PRACTICE. If I am not shooting how can I improve. Thank you I really needed to watch. Going to plan some free shoots to get the hours in and take it from there. Subscribed! ✌🏾
Thanks for sharing your tips... would you believe the tip that struck me the most was that of overcoming one’s insecurities by getting out and shoot more..... big appreciation from the Caribbean.
Imagine shooting 80 weddings a year: 6-7 weddings a month; 1-2 weddings a week. Planning and then editing as well. You're gonna need a "Starbucks Employee-Sized" editing team to take care of that work. If you're doing it all; maximum 2-3 days of editing to finish the Longfilm and Short Story; not to mention probably the teaser the day after the shoot. Now that's pure chaos. That's one way to make "6 figures" a year. LOL 😂😂😂
Awesome as always guys! Top draw content and the courses look great! I have to admit that UA-cam has had me tarting my viewership all over the place, but I always know that your vids will both be slick and also packed with content!! Cheers 😀🕺🏽🎥🏖🇦🇺
A well in depth video with some awesome tips. Thank you for opening my eyes to how much more I need to keep in mind when creating a video. Good guest appearance by Nick. He gave me some really good ideas. The one point I totally agree with Nick on is you can make a great video with ANY camera and right now I am using a Go Pro knockoff called the Minigo from China at a price so low I can't even talk about it. Although I have never shot my own video, I've worked with many great artists (Micheal Jackson to name one) and I am a retired Disney Imagineer with many side video projects including TV, and movie genre. Have built a sound stage in my studio and hope to surprise a lot of people with my finished project on a shoe string budget. Look for it coming soon. It's called "Red Socks and A Black Suit". Thanks again for your valuable information...
from music we cantrain the tasste, from the sense ofthe present imagination, because imagination is unlimited, I always follow and try to apply what has been shared
we have project in our school and we will do the video interview. i watched your videos to get an idea and i've learn a lot. and also because your videos i have a desire to become like you and i hope it will come true hehe.

You are wonderful guys one of the best without a doubt
You guys are simply amazing. Thank you. So much I've had to learn in this short tutorial
Matching the camera movement to the tempo of the song is GENIUS! The last piano song I uploaded to UA-cam felt off and I couldn’t figure out why
My head exploded when you said "play the song at 250% speed and film at 60 fps, then slow it all down in post to 24fps....CAN YOU DO A TUTORIAL ON THIS!?!
I thought I was the only one who didnt understand that
Google Slow Motion Fast Songs
Actually..it means..u need to speed up ur slow song by 125% and export ur mp3, then ask your artist to sing in that sped up song..and u gotta shoot that in 60fps and then in post make it 24 fps keeping original slow..song in ur timeline....hope u get it..So it looks the artist is singing in slow..motion..
