About the movie, there are many real characters and a lot of real elements, but the way they connect them was kind of invented to fit better into the movie.
To put some context about how it starts:
In the early 1960s, people fled the famine that occurred in northeastern Brazil (one of the rare existing data shows 500,000 people dying of hunger in 2 years). They went mainly to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. As the cities did not have space for them, they built their houses themselves with scrap wood and in an environmentally protected area due to the risk of environmental disaster. The government didn't care because Brazil (due to the cold war) was in a dictatorship (1964-1988) to kill communists.
City of god is about 60's and 70's and then, elite squad 1 is 90's and elite squad 2 is 2010's.

A very good story about this film is that at the oscars Steven Spielberg personally asked Fernando Meirelles how they film the chicken chase scene, which he thought was incredible and probably take a lot of work, he asked if they had invented a new technique to do that, and Fernando basically said "I just tied a camera in another chicken and he ran after the first one" XD

The horrifying thing about Lil Ze is that *on occasion* he shows a human side; he doesn't shoot Angelica, even though he tells her "this is your fault" right there at Benny's corpse - he easily could, he shoots the air instead. He then gifts the photo-camera to Rocket, even explicitly remembering Benny wanted Rocket to have it.
In my opinion, these *teeny* moments of humanity is what makes someone like Lil Ze so scary; they aren't aliens, monsters, creatures of our imagination - they are actual humans!

apparently, the child's cry who was shot on the foot was real, since the direction of the movie wanted a genuine reaction, so it somehow made believe the boy that Lil Ze' was ( existed on real life ) real, instead of an acting. he talked about the scene causing him a trauma years later after the filming of the movie.

I've seen other reacts and yours was the coolest. I always go through the videos quickly, but I watched yours in full.
Brazil is not violent as the film portrays. Brazil is an immense country. This is a reality in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
To have a non-violent experience of Brazilian cinema, I suggest watching the film "Lisbela and the Prisoner", a masterpiece of Brazilian comedy, which portrays another aspect of our culture, specifically the northeast region. It will get a lot of views. You should know that some of the fun of the film is in the way the characters talk, that is, you won't be able to capture this aspect with rationalized subtitles. But even so, the film is very good to watch and different from anything you may have seen before. Auto da Compadecida is a similiar experience.
Regarding the film City of God, there are so many interesting ingredients that I couldn't list them all.
For example, there is a corrupt police officer who is involved in all the police misdeeds. He is the only criminal who doesn't get hurt in the film.
Another detail is that when Lil'Z goes to "Pai de Santo" he receives an amulet and an instruction: he cannot copulate with the amulet. When he rapes "Mané Galinha's" wife, the camera takes a close-up of the amulet. After that he has a tragic end.
This film is about violence, and expresses an outburst about a subject that no one can ideologically find a solution for. This is the relief, despite all the pain. The relief of knowing that we share this feeling of incapacity as human beings.
In my opinion, the film also portrays a civilizing process that, by not including everyone, generates another delayed civilizing process. It's as if in the center of Rio de Janeiro we were in the 21st century, but in the favelas we are at the beginnings of society, with its tribal and purely animalistic wars. At the beginning of the film, Rocket says that the "City of God" was built far from Rio's postcard. At the end of the film, the (real) TV news report presents speech by the uncivilized world, from "Mané Galinha", that the war will continue, and the talk of the civilized world, of the delegate, that the war would end. There are two worlds in conflict.
If you liked the film, you must watch Tropa de Elite (1 and 2). It is also a masterpiece. It will also generate a lot of views. There are many Brazilians, and they are very interested in the views of foreigners on the internet, as you may have already noticed.

This is y Brazil 🇧🇷 is literally STILL LIKE THIS it hasn’t changed only thing that changed is that the density of the favelas like the Brazilian swat(BOPE) has the worst job of going through that place and clearing out gangs cuz they get too powerful but have plan of really changing it

  • @beccajane209
    @beccajane209 9 місяців тому +6

Also something you might like - you were saying about the kids, The Runts, and how good the kids acting was in the Hand or Foot scene. The littlest kid in that scene was told that he had to imagine the WORST PAIN he'd ever experienced and use that as the basis for his acting. His worst pain? A tootache. So, while the scene is distressing just remember that sweet lil' story and it might make you feel a bit better. 🙂

  • @senhor_errante

Chicken is indeed a symbol. You see, in portuguese, knockout ned's original name is "Mané Galinha" wich could be translated in a more literal way as "Manny Chicken". In the first scene, the hoods of Lil Z are preparing chicken (knockout ned) with carrot for the dinner.

For as dark a film this is, it's also unexpectedly funny. "Let's make a blacklist." "Ok, who can write?" Loads of great darkly comedic lines especially when they need to soften the blow of a scene. There aren't many films that can pull off this films tone.
