I remember when Kid A came out. Everyone knew that it was going to be a lot different from OK Computer. It wasn't a shock. Radiohead had made no secret of how burnt out they were from touring the world for over a year. They're old material was boring them and they needed something completely different in order to stay together as a band. I seem to remember all of this being made pretty clear well before the album dropped. No one knew what to expect but when it hit everyone was like, "yeah, this is pretty cool". It's basically a rock band experimenting with electronic sounds. The indie/garage band methodolgy is there but with new equipment.
Aphex Twin's "Syro" is a great example of a splitting fanbase. On one half, people were upset that Richard ditched his iconic style in favor for an experimental pop-inspired sound. The other half welcomed the change, even after 6/8 years of no new releases and praise the album for being innovative
I'm a part of that other half, I think Syro stands well against his older music like Richard D. and Selected Ambient Works, and even stays relevant with the recent release of Orphans
some artists are well-known for their constant stylistic changes, just look at King Crimson, King Gizzard, and many other King bands

And each one of those has been extremely enjoyable to listen to- curious to see where he goes next
It's been an interesting Journey though I'll admit I still miss the Chloe Burbank tracks. Heck I even miss the old Pink guy and some of the Pink season style.
Remo Drive is an example on how you shouldn't really respond to detractors.

To go back to the 90's, the big one I always think about is Nine Inch Nails. Pretty Hate Machine to Broken is such an intense change that their label dropped em (well, the Broken film is also a part of that - if you don't know it, research it, just don't eat during it) Dark synth pop to straight up destructive industrial? My man Reznor knows what he's doing
Though for a failure of one, Bad Religion's Into the Unknown pissed people off so bad they turned right around and went straight back to their punk rock sound, which, thank god, because then we got the absolute banger that is Suffer
The Poppy thing reminds me of KKB
The group went from simple pop music with simple instruments to more complex pop music with dark lyrical undertones to like fucking Noise, Rock, and Shoegaze type stuff to an electronic EP back to fucking Bugsnax
Now note, they didn't completely change their sound front to back, still having that poppy (heh) background but like

Earl sweatshirt is another pretty good one too, he went from aggressive rap like Tyler (no surprise, both of them coming from odd future), to some of the most beautiful abstract hip hop I've ever heard to be honest, if you haven't listened to 'Some Rap Songs' I would defo recommend, great album.
Miles Davis is a great example that could be put in the category of Tyler en Death Grips. His whole discog is very interesting and diverse going from cool jazz, hard bop, post bop, model jazz to jazz fusion, jazz rock and some cultural steps. He made a lot of albums and some "era's" even overlapped with each other.
More artists; Nick Cave, Charli XCX, Tame Impala, Xiu Xiu idk.

10:30 + 10:45 So Radiohead suddenly went from making conceptual soft rock to ambient/post-rock/electronic fusion right? It's known as the greatest left turn in music history because of how radical a change in sound it was. They're credited positively for this since they tread on new ground for them and expanded their sound. For Linkin Park, One More Light was heavily criticised because the radical change in sound was more of a step backwards. Even if you make a high-brow or just well made record, it's not really getting out of your comfort zone and exploring new sounds if your next album follows more conventional tropes. In a way it's actually digging themselves deeper into a comfort zone. There's nothing wrong with making pop music, but if you're a band who purposefully opposes a sound by making very different stuff, going backwards and making the very stuff you used to criticize confuses your audience. What's more, we tend to associate label control with the most popular conventions in music atm, like the oversaturation of trap percussion or bland subject matter, because at the moment, it sells. One More Light was hated on because it seemed like that was what LP were doing at the time, while Radiohead were going against the grain in the contexts of both their own sound and the sounds that were selling at the time.
This is basically what i was going to say too. Radiohead made an advancement, their music changed drastically but it was in a more artistic and visionary direction. It didn't alienate all of their old fans and brought in a huge new fanbase. Linkin park went the opposite direction, their sound changed but it was to something more simplistic and less artistic.
The Scott Walker from Tilt is unrecognizable. Especially when you compare him to, say, Scott 4.
Talk Talk went from bright synth pop darlings to moody post rock pioneers.
Ulver abandoned black metal to embrace IDM.
Scritti Politti switched between Post Punk and Trip Hop after a long ass hiatus.
Those are the most extreme stylistic shifts I can think of that were celebrated / well received.
On the other hand you have Celtic Frost in Cold Lake (ditching their extreme sound to make a hair metal album didn't make anyone happy).
Also Boris going J Pop towards the end of the 2000s, although I actually love this stuff.
Animal Collective fans love and want the change every album. Seriously how you not gonna talk about Animal Collective they are masters of changing styles, moreso than death grips or radiohead if you ask me

The reason why Radiohead was a success is because Kid A is still an art rock album, yeah there's IDM, jazz, ambient and electronic sounds and songs but it's still laced in their rock sound, they may have implimented more sounds and ideas but it still sounds like Radiohead. They also where able to take their sound and evolve it with Kid A the reason Linkin Park didn't work is because they went from Nu Metal straight to mainstream electropop with cheesy pop melodies and mainstream rap features. It was literally a Chester Bennington solo album it didn't sound like Linkin Park at all
I think a lot of it is really just finding that new audience that is gonna like your new sound. You're gonna lose some old fans regardless because they were a fan of your sound, but not you. XXX is another great example. people don't realize he lost a lot of his older fans that just liked his hard grungey shit. Especially when he switched to the sounds of 17 and even ? But he also had so many fans that were just down for him as a person it didn't matter. along with the fact his new music was very marketable and was very good.

it's funny how Remo Drive say they didn't want to make the same sound in between Greatest Hits and Everyday Degradation but that Portrait of An Ugly something whatever sounded exactly like Everyday Degradation. So, they want to 'evolve' their sound whenever it's convenient for their defense.

Scott Walker's transit from a crooner that your grandma would stan 50 years ago, through making postpunk in the 80's to being an experimental/modern classical artist who collaborated with Sunn O))) is probably the most interesting case of stylistic changes in music.

I really liked Remo Drive a few years back. I thought it was cool they were bringing pop punk back. Its totally not cool that bands get pissed when they turn their sound on its head and expect everyone to enjoy it.
If u ever revisit this topic please look into Metronomy. They pretty much redefine their entire sound every album, using different instruments and techniques. They’re my favorite band but every time they release a new album it takes about a month for me to open up to the new sound and then it all sounds incredible

Prolly nobody here is gonna be all too familiar with them but Caravan Palace DEFINED the electro swing/house genre. That’s not an exaggeration, they’re the ones who revolutionized the genre, making music nobody else came anywhere fucking close to.
They made two banger albums and then did a much more massively successful album that was more of a mix of their two last records that added in a minor pop element which made it somewhat catchier and more palatable to general audiences. Unfortunately, after THAT album, two band members left and they decided “hey maybe the reason this album was successful was because of the pop” and basically the next album was nothing but shitty pop music.
Now, I’m a fucking swing snob and I HATE pop music, but to be fair, this wasn’t even good POP music, it was just pretty meh altogether. That album was basically nothing but pop music that wasn’t unique and very generic and the overall popularity shows it. Nothing on that record was a hit, it was all pretty shit. Hopefully they at least compromise next and make shit more like their earlier stuff, shit I’ll take a mix of pop and swing, that worked the first time they did it.
If anyone wants to see for themselves, listen to their titular album “Caravan Palace” (fucking awesome), “Panic” (their second album which was mostly meh but had a few major bangers), and their most popular album “” or “robot face” was a fusion of electro swing/house with pop that really fucking worked. Now compare those to their latest album “Chronologic”, which has no songs with the same energy and excitement, no hits, just pretty bland. I’m still pissed about this. Sorry for the long rant but fuck me it sucks seeing your favorite band go to shit. At least Parov Stelar is still good.

just not gonna talk about the Beatles? they went from making really good bubble gum pop to heavy psychedelic rock over the course of about 4 albums and the entire musical landscape just kinda shifted with them.
I think one of the most interesting changes in music would have to be Serj Tankian. He was (I think is now, I believe the band is now back together) the singer for System of a Down who after SoaD did some solo stuff. From SoaD it was clear how they do whatever but they did mostly stay in their metal and rock type roots, Serj giving even less of a shit about what style he did once he was doing solo stuff. Sure there is the usual rocky stuff he does, Empty Walls being my favorite song by him on the Elect the Dead album. He really starts changing it up though with the live album Elect The Dead Symphony, which is the same music but with a whole ass ORCHESTRA instead of the rocky stuff. From that he then made Orca Symphony No. 1 a couple years later which is a whole ass instrumental orchestra that's in four parts about 8 minutes each.
Remo Drive is my favorite example of this. I’d hate to be that guy, but I want the old Remo Drive back

Oneohtrix Point Never has a lot of weird changes.
From the weird midi instrumentals of R Plus Seven, to the Alt-Rock inspired Electronic Rock of Garden of Delete.
Back in 2018 I went into the latest Arctic Monkeys album expecting something in the vein of their previous albums and didn't know what to think of the album at first. Today, it's one of my favorite albums ever.
There are a lot of albums I didn't like at first that became some of my favorites. Another example would be The Ooz by King Krule which I first listened to expecting more of his previous album, but for some reason I came back to it like six months after it released and loved it.
On the other hand, when Mac Demarco released Here Comes The Cowboy, which wasn't a total departure from his other albums but took a way more minimalist route, I could never get on board with this direction. But it doesn't matter, I didn't like it, but some people did and it's only my personal feeling and artists don't owe us anything in my opinion.
I think people should keep an open mind about albums they didn't like, and try not having expectations for upcoming releases.
I wish the thumbnail of this video wasn't so clickbaity because I don't think there's really one answer for how a band should go about changing their sound, but I think it's something interesting to talk about.
While not very jarring, polyphia changed from straight shred to something completely new and it sounds amazing

I feel like if you were familiar with the work Alex Turner's work on the "Everything you've come to expect" album from his second band The Last Shadow Puppets with his friend Miles Kane then the transition to TBH+C is a bit less jarring than going from AM to TBH+C. The sounds and style of music in Everything you've come to expect clearly fuel the new arctic monkeys album.
I'll be honest, I don't really listen to any of the artists you tend to talk about, but videos like this are interesting nonetheless.
I mainly listen to so-called "boomer music", though I've been slowly expanding my tastes. There are some artists I know of that also changed their sound, though this usually corresponds with a lineup change, or just a change with the times over the decades, with varying degrees of change. Although, I can't think of many that change genre entirely. Artists like King Crimson, Blue Öyster Cult (my two favourite bands), Blue Cheer, Bathory, Death (slightly), Celtic Frost, Deep Purple, and many others to a lesser extent.

An example that hit hard for me is the band Set It Off. Their first album Horrible Kids is mostly bangers. The next one got a little more poppy, but there’s a few good ones. The next album was mostly garbage, but it also had their best song, “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” The rest of that album and everything they’ve made since has been some horrible pop butchery of metal.
Justice is a pretty good example for the second category
Is no one gonna bring up King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard? They do a compleatly different genre on every single album so i would think they would fit in perfectly in this conversion.

Well, “the greatest left turn in music history” depends on how you reason it. I think people (and i as well) think about how Radiohead made masterpieces (imo) on two completely different ends. I do understand why people would argue for the title with different criteria tho

I mean, the band was known for their genre and style switches since day one. Then 2017 rolls around and one of the most common criticisms for the new album was that it "doesnt sound like Gorillaz"

A thousand suns is now a fan favorite just like kid a they both got a lot of hate but then got reevaluated by fans and critics and are now both seen as one of if not THE best album in both bands discographys. Also, Radiohead were in tune with the critical seitgeist at the time having a lot of 'indie cred'with critics and fans while LP was part of thr nu metal movement, which was not a favorite among critics, to say the least.

I don’t think Poppy was a complete left turn. Am I Girl really was the transitional album for her. In three parts you can start to slowly hear the transition from full pop, to self aware hard pop, to metal. And then culminating to X, which is like a bipolar mix of pop and metal. And then of course after that album she released I Disagree, which was full metal.

I think a good representaion of the loose lips category is probably Bowie, who changed it up every few albums but didn't care if people hated it. Also, I'd say FOB are still rock, stuff like "Church" and "Hold Me Tight Or Don't" and their live shows showing that side strongly.

Lucky Strike, aka the Panic! category (or again Bowie). I'd also maybe include Hank 3 (Hank Williams 3) who went from traditional country music, to death and groove metal, to country again, to hardcore punk, to ambient/drone music, to sludge/doom metal, to country rock, and kept his fanbase through it all.

Personally I think that real Joji music was chloe burbank. All this other stuff he makes in my opinion sounds like generic sad boy pop music. However as you stated there's indeed a market for that and I'm just simply not his market anymore.
