      Ikr? If you look at her face towards the end of the program, she was as white as a ghost, I actually fully expected her to pass out, she looks so ill. But she kept going and even managed her jumps (albeit doubles not triples) - most of the other skaters would be carried off on a stretcher after that

    • @gisazurnieden9058

      Yes. It's amazing how she managed to do her program without a single fall despite the condition she was in. (I probably would also have been laid up in bed with this temperature). You can see literally in her eyes (when she is sitting there after her program) that she had a really high temperature. They are Kind of glazed over (I hope this is the Right phrasing... English isn't my native language)...

    She actually had pneumonia here but you can tell she was in great shape. Had she delivered the type of performance here that she did at Skate America earlier that season Trenary wouldn’t be national or probably even world champ either. Such a shame that really should have been her year.

Regardless of whether you love or hate her, you have to agree she once was a phenomenal athlete....a strong and athletic jumper. Way ahead of her time with her jumps. @Aspen Robinson: And what About the Original Program at the world Championship 1991? She did VERY well there but was coughing hard afterwards. Not for the camera, that was clearly the real Thing. And regarding Smoking: Yes, it's self-destructive or even some Kind of self-harm to smoke if you have Asthma.
      But Trauma (through the abuse by her mother and later Jeff Gillooly) does strange Things to you. Some People e.g. cut themselves, some smoke in spite of Asthma. If someone is (at times, not Always in Tonya's case) their own worst enemy that's Always for a reason. I speak from experience.

    I don't think those scores were fair. They never were fair. Tonya did remarkably well and is a fantastic skater. She showed initiative to adapt her routine and despite not being her 'potential', it was a very clean technical performance that took things slower to match the speed of many other skaters. I think it was a slower pace, which in fairness matches the tempo of the music, but it maintained a high technical level. Tonya was always robbed the credit she deserved. The commentary of this program was also so terrible. You'd be lucky if they awknowledged 1 good move in the performance.

    • @aspenrobinson8797
      @aspenrobinson8797 6 років тому

      Eilidh Clague Well maybe the judges had a abusive upbringing, or a bad mother or a abusive husband or they were poor or they had asthma . Don't be hard on the judges marking , they have been through a lot and if they solicited another judges leg to be bashed in I wouldn't blame them one bit.

    • @starace4031
      @starace4031 6 років тому +4

      Aspen Robinson I agree that everyone faces their own battles in life and perhaps Tonya was unlucky that judges tended to take out their bitterness on her, as a result of them coping with a hard life. I highly doubt it though especially when other skaters were rarely under-marked to the same extent as Tonya. Personally I find it hard to watch such bias take place, but if you don't share this opinion then that's cool too.

    When you think about all the obstacles she had to overcome if she had not resorted to the horrific incident she would have been a role model for so many young girl. What a damn shame. She will go to her grave denying her involvement but she was involved and resorted to the wrong path. For those that think they were against her if you listen to the commentators they were always encouraging and supporting. She just didn’t perform up to par in her later years. I think considering the abuse and trials she had to deal with it really is quite a miracle that she got as far as she did. Her only real obstacle was herself in the end.

      If she was sometimes her own worst enemy it was BECAUSE of the abuse. Trauma often makes you act irrational and even self-destructive/self-harming/self-sabotaging. Her real enemies were her mother and later her husband. I don't mean that as an excuse for everything that went wrong in her life, but as an Explanation. Yes she should have come clean and told the cops everything she knew the minute he was arrested, but considering her husband's propensity for violence, can you really blame her? Yes, Smoking in spite of Asthma IS self-destructive or even self-harming, but - i know I repeat myself here in the commentary section, but obviously I'm not he only one here ;) - traumatic experiences (her abusive upbringing) make you often act "strange" and irrational and even self-harming. The pain has to find some outlet. This is not About excuses, but About explanations.
