Q: After we got back from Carnegie Hall, we brought back your message of how Harry is kind of not really a Horcrux. And I won't dwell too long on Horcruxes, but, I'd love to hear you talking about how he is or isn't, or wasn't.
JKR: Well, I tell you-- You know what, this will not end the discussion. I know that, and you know that. But here is the thing. For convenience, I had Dumbledore say to Harry, "You were the Horcrux he never meant to make." But I think, by definition, a Horcrux has to be made intentionally. So, because Voldemort never went through the grotesque process that I imagined creates a Horcrux, with Harry, it was just that he had destabilized his soul so much that it split when he was hit by the back-firing curse. And so this part of it flies off and attaches to the only living thing in the room. A part of it flees in the very close-to-death limbo state that Voldemort then goes on and exists in. I suppose it's very close to being a Horcrux. But Harry was not-- did not become an evil object. He wasn't-- he didn't have curses upon him that the other Horcruxes had. He himself was not contaminated by carrying this bit of parasitic soul. The only time he ever felt it stirring and moving was in "Order of the Phoenix", when he himself goes through a very dark time. And there's a moment where he's looking at Dumbledore and he feels something rear like a snake inside him. And of course at those times, it's because the piece of soul inside him is feeding off his emotions. He's going through a dark time and that piece of soul is enjoying it and making its presence felt. But he doesn't know what he's feeling, of course. Also I always imagined the Sorting Hat detected the presence of that piece of soul when Harry first tried it on. Because it was strongly tempted to put him in Slytherin. So that's how I see it. Now, I know that won't end the debate, but I do think that the strict definition of Horcrux, once I write The Scottish Book, will have to be given and that the definition will be: the receptacle is prepared by dark magic to become the receptacle of a fragmented piece of soul and that that piece of soul deliberately detached from the Master Soul to act as a future safeguard or anchor to life and to safeguard against death. So that doesn't clear anything up but it elucidates what I believe. But I don't think it's necessarily going to convince people who have a strong feeling, one way or the other, on the matter. You know what, that's been the case with most of "Harry Potter". I gave my explanation and it just fuels more debate.

So. the back-firing curse, the KILLING CURSE, caused his soul to be torn apart -> which happened because he had destabilized it with all of the shit he did to it prior. it had to go somewhere -> chose living thing
_ She kind of did in the unintentionally part of him splitting his soul so your speculation is correct. It wasn't intentionally because of the killing curse and his maimed soul and he didn't go through the grotesque processdo, so he needed a living thing instead of a object.

I think another reason why Helena chose to become a ghost is because she was too ashamed to face her mother. After all, if she had moved on, it would mean having to face her.

It’s because Tom showed Dumbledore his deviant side too soon. He learnt from his mistake with Dumbledore though, he was more careful and never revealed his true nature to anyone else.
you know something that’s always pissed me off? the fact that tom riddle used the diadem, salazar’s locket, and helgas cup as horcruxes because those things are artifacts that were apart of hogwarts history and we’re really special. but riddle made them into horcruxes and harry destroyed them which ruined them. idk why but it’s always just made me mad that he ruined these really cool items that was connected to hogwarts and the founders

The odd thing is all the Hogwarts Horcruxes were destroyed differently...Slytherin’s (ironically) was destroyed by Gryffindor’s sword (the two enemies)....Hufflepuff’s cup by a fang of the basalisk and Ravenclaw’s diadem by Fiendfire

I also think that another reason Helena chose to come back as a ghost, was because she was too embarrassed to face her mother. Like you said,Rowena never admitted that Helena stole it, and even wanting to see Helena before she died, made Helena feel bad for everything she did to her mother.
TheRobMan 07 I agree I would be terrified to meet my mother in the afterlife had I done what she did to hers. I don’t know what’s scarier having to fess up and own up to it and be reprimanded.... Or owning up to it and being forgiven.... I think the guilt of knowing her mother still endlessly loves her was eating her up inside, I think she began to hate herself for what she had done to her mother and couldn’t face it... After all her mother kept her daughters betrayal to her a secret..... As mine always says “It is my biggest blessing as well as my biggest curse to love you as your mother.”

It's so cool and curious how in the first film, we see the ghosts as just a playful fun group of background characters in the movie. But as the books progress, we see more seriousness and the depth of story behind them.

During Helena Ravenclaw's life, people referred to this area as Albania, which is probably why it was called that way in this part of the story. For Harry's generation, there's no reason not to call in Scotland. But Helena lived during the time where Scotland was called Albania, so she keeps referring to it that way.

When I first read of The Grey Lady's story, I felt pretty bad for her. However, hearing it made a difference. I think of her as pretty selfish now and not at all cunning. Stealing the diadem would never have helped her to begin with, she stole her mother's work rather than make something of her own. Even if she did have the higher intelligence due to the diadem, anything she did with that enhancement would always be credited to her mother. She *might* think she's cunning now as a ghost for figuring out how to live longer than her mother, but it isn't really living. For me, I simply see someone who is stuck forever never admitting their own shortcomings and jealousy.

I feel like a better way to create tension between Helena and Rowena would be to have her be sorted into another house. Rowena would be upset that her daughter didn't follow the path set out for her, and Helena would see her mother less and less like she did throughout childhood. Maybe Slytherin because she was cunning enough to steal knowledge from her mother when leaving, and to give her enough time to be annoyed by the baron's attempts at wooing her. After dying, Helena would be tied to Ravenclaw house, and would stay under her mother's shadow like she was hoping not to.

If they were ghosts, Harry would still go the same path, just less depressed. Ghosts can't take care of a 1 year old baby. He'd have to go to his aunt and uncle anyway. Harry's aunt and uncle wouldn't ever let Harry meet them. That's my theory

Nearly Headless Nick states in book 5 that after you die, you have the choice of going on or becoming a ghost, but Voldemort didn’t have that choice because his soul was too maimed. When Harry and Dumbledore are in Harry’s mind version of King’s Cross, they come across a small part of Voldemort’s soul (the one that was inside Harry) and Dumbledore comments that it is beyond either of their help. That piece of soul isn’t whole enough to ‘go on’ or return. This little piece is equivalent to the part of Voldemort’s soul that was finally killed at the end of Deathly Hallows, which is also then stuck in limbo forever without the choice of ‘going on’ or returning as a ghost.

Think the reason the Baron came back is because he felt he did not pay enough for what he had done, Nick mentions he is always carrying chains, so maybe he decided to come back just to continue giving penance to his mistakes.
