I didn't know you have to keep the base FPS low if you want to enable HFR/OSR. Why is that? As for the monitor, I wish Atomos would make a 7" version of the Shinobi!!!! Good call on the ISO Range. I learned that after doing a few shoots!
Driven Films to my knowledge, when you set an off speed shutter, it offsets based on the current shutter speed you have. So if you’re at 60 trying to offset to 120, it’s only a 50% reduction in speed rather than if you were at 24 offsetting to 120. Then that would give you much slower footage representing true 120 FPS. And a 7” Shinobi would be amazing!!

@@ChrisFranklinJr interesting, so the cam still wants to have a battery in their to operate? Can you use a real LPE6 battery or does that cause issues?
@@jamesdrakefilms Great question, if you want to use the battery in the video, ONLY use it through connecting a dummy battery to it, and NOT through the 2 pin adapter on the side. If you are using the Powerbase Edge, it comes with its own Dummy battery to plug in!
@@ChrisFranklinJr ok understood thanks for clarifying. one last question, sorry for the string here. I see those batteries you recommended put out 7.4v, but the camera has 12v in, does the dummy battery supply 7.4v into camera, and that's what it expects from a standard LPE6?
Do you recommend upgrading from a 4K to a 6K Blackmagic. I was thinking about upgrading my 4K to a 6K and just seeing if that will be worth it I do have a meta speed bone adapter with it
The 6k doesn’t crush the shadows and blacks like the 4k does. I prefer the 6k’s image every time (but being able to adapt almost any lens because the m43 Mount on the 4k is awesome though...)
You need to take a tour through the manual. The external power input is rated for 10.8V to 20V. The output of the battery you're using is 7.4V nominal, which the camera was not designed to use. Maybe it's worked for you so far but you really don't know how close you are to the actual lower voltage threshold at which the camera will work, which may change with temperature or camera settings. Short statement: don't power the Pocket 6K (or 4K) the way you're doing it.
hmmm, interesting. I m using the same method he is using, and now after months of extensive use, my camera doesn't turn on anymore via dummy battery when the ambient temperature it's below 55 F (luckily I live in LA so that's rare). It always turns on when I plug the camera with the Wall power no matter what temperature it is. But guess what, If I warm up the camera body then the camera turns on with that method he is using. Something weird is definitely going on. You seem to know some stuff about power and I was wondering if you could explain this weird side effect I'm getting with the camera. I mean you kinda did in the previous comment, but you got my attention when you mentioned that temperature might affect it. My camera also doesn't power anymore via LP E6 batteries when it's 55 F or below :/ So I know something is definitely off. At the moment If I work in conditions of 55 F or colder my only option is to plug the camera to the wall, or warm up the camera a little bit somewhere, turn it on, and don't turn it off or it won't power back on unless the body got warm enough by using the camera itself.
@@AxiA The UA-camr is using the external power input. I you're using a dummy battery, then you are operating within the rated range for the internal battery. I would say that there's a component in the internal battery to camera powering circuit that fails due to temperature, since you say that you can always power the camera with the AC converter that comes with the camera. Since the camera is rated for operation between 32F to 104F, I would contact BMD if your camera is within warranty.
@@michaelandreas2177 Michael! Thank you so much for you comment! So when I use this method, I also keep the internal battery in the camera, and essentially I am charging the internal battery while using the external. Is this basically the same bad Idea or should i just switch to a dummy battery in total. (Which I have and use but did not mention in the video, forgot lol)
@@ChrisFranklinJr Ever so much more a reason to read the manual. It recommends against having an internal battery at the same time as a power source like this. I 1000% endorse that recommendation.
Hi - I purchased the batteries you have linked, but they are actually different to the ones in the video. I saw from the comments that at some point you updated the link - but these batteries don't have the same output as the ones you have, they only have USB and 5V IN... I don't think they will work in the same way?
Honestly, I am not sure! The batteries update and switch over randomly on the link! I would definitely only use it through dummy battery, but that may be hard without a DC input!
SSCM 527 my current favorites at the moment are the Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 (great focal length for the crop sensor and it can get SUPER close, almost macro close) and I also like the Rokinon 85mm T/1.5! Super cheap but it’s great to reach things that are just a little too far away!!
Chris. GREAT VIDEO! This is my first time in your channel On min 3 you said that if we want to see a Dual native ISO video, we let you know I really like to see it! Thanks in advance and sorry for my Egnlish; i'm still learning
I completely agree about the battery life. I’m gonna have to check out those NPF batteries. I’ve seen a few people using them but I haven’t tried to find any for myself, but I had a shoot this morning on my BMPCC4K and the battery life was killing me because it was so cold. Ended up shooting almost all the B-roll on my canon rp and just shot the interview on the Blackmagic.
The battery life is quite the problem! I defintely recommend checking out those NPF batteries! They've been working flawlessly for me, especially since I pretty much always use a monitor!
Chris Franklin nice! I have a different monitor but it also takes NPF power so that’s a perfect solution. Do you leave the LP-E6 in the camera while shooting on those or is that not recommended? I’d think you’d want an LP-E6 in there as a back up but I’m not sure.
Chris Franklin cool! I was just curious if there were any issues with doing that. I thought there probably wouldn’t be since there aren’t any issues doing that when I plug into a wall.
Great video! Can you show some videos about it’s focus system and how you keep your videos in focus when using it? With video example? But new subscriber here! Great stuff
Thanks for the vid. Gotta say, your audio is top notch. Looks like the room you are in is really live, but you got reverb under control. What mic and recorder did you use on this video?
Marin Real Estate Photography thanks!! Yeah I bought a huge rug to kinda help, about to but some sound blanket to help even more! Microphone: AT875R Recorder: Zoom H6!
For those just entering the world of BlackMagic in 2021, would you still recommend the 6k as a good entry point or the 6k Pro? Preference being not having to make a purchase and then feel like you need to upgrade within a year. Thanks and great video!
Hey man! I did learn a few things! I got a question for ya. So when you are shooting in your "3200" native iso range, are you @ 1250 or actually 3200? I've heard somewhere to shoot in 1250 and the chart you're showing for the 3200 range starts at 1250 as well. I always just assumed that the native ISO was @1250 because of that. Thanks for the video and love your content man! Easy to watch, love the quality and super dope hat
Solid question! So your native ISO is going to give you the best dynamic range "For the ISO group". So as you stated, you enter into the upper ISO threshold when you cross ISO 1250. When you are shooting RAW, if you cross ISO 1250, you start exposing better for your shadows, and if you go into Post and try to adjust your ISO, the lowest ISO you can go is 1250 because you are now in that upper threshold. If you are shooting at ISO 400, in post, you can drop to ISO 100 or go up to ISO 1000, but you cannot go past 1000 because you filmed closer to the native ISO of 400 rather than the Native ISO of 3200. I hope that makes sense. I know that was a TON. TLDR: you have an upper and lower ISO. When shooting raw and below 1250, you have access to all of your lower ISO's in post. When shooting RAW and 1250 & above, you have access to all of your upper ISO levels. Native ISO of 400 & 3200 gives you the camera best dynamic range. (even though the upper level starts at 1250)

Thank you so much! And to my knowledge, you're always going to get a SLIGHT crop if you use a speedbooster. And they currently only have speedboosters for the Pocket 4K!
Sounds about right! Thanks for the input
Great energy, so smart!
This was a really fun watch. Keep it up man.
Johan Taljaard thank you so much!!
Thanks for the video ! liked and subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Do you still use the rig set up u first presented in a January video, or is there an updated set up you found works better?
Check out one of my latest videos on my rig! I tweaked a few things!
@@ChrisFranklinJr ok i did see that, now what makes you choose the style of rig you have versus a shoulder rig situation?
@@KamKalambay Good question, If I am doing run and gun for some casual b-roll, I will keep my setup as light as possible. But if I know I need to shoot a wedding or a moving interview, then I use a shoulder rig.
@@ChrisFranklinJr for film production, which would you opt more towards? Also if you only had a $3500 budget for all this...
which items can wait until you can get later?
The battery in your link isn’t the same battery in the video ... what’s the battery in the video
It changes alot so it's hard to have a dedicated link, I will do my best to keep it updated!

Welcome aboard!
Great tips, Chris. Thanks very much.
Clive Richards thanks for watching!! Glad I could help!!
GREAT VIDEO MAN! LEARNED MORE THAN A FEW THINGS. GOING TO PICK UP SOME OF THOSE BATTERIES ASAP
Glad I could help!!
thank you for the thoughts on that battery monitor combo. i hate the whole vmount rails thing... though i get it. thanks for the tip
Absolutely! just make sure you use a dummy battery with it! I would also look into the Powerbase Edge! It's a really good solution for small setups!
@@jamesdrakefilms Haha No worries, But YES! So as long as you're using the dummy battery to power, you are good to go!
Do you recommend upgrading from a 4K to a 6K Blackmagic. I was thinking about upgrading my 4K to a 6K and just seeing if that will be worth it I do have a meta speed bone adapter with it
Personally I love the flexibility of the 6k! So that's the main reason I got it! So I would say it's worth it!
The 6k doesn’t crush the shadows and blacks like the 4k does. I prefer the 6k’s image every time (but being able to adapt almost any lens because the m43 Mount on the 4k is awesome though...)
Link to battery doesn’t work! What batteries are those ?
Nice videos
Hey! The link is currently working but sometimes it sells out!
@@michaelandreas2177 Thank you! Yes will do!
Hey Chris! Thx :) ... .and what are your favorite lenes for the 6k? :)
This is my first time in your channel
On min 3 you said that if we want to see a Dual native ISO video, we let you know
I really like to see it!
Thanks in advance and sorry for my Egnlish; i'm still learning
No worries!! I can definitely get on that!!
Nice clean video dude! That camera looks like a beast, would love to give it a try.
PeteyBoy TV Thanks!!
@@CorbanLaFon I do! Just in case the bigger battery dies, I have the ability to hot swap! But you can honestly do either!
Chris Franklin cool! I was just curious if there were any issues with doing that. I thought there probably wouldn’t be since there aren’t any issues doing that when I plug into a wall.
@@CorbanLaFon Exactly! So no worries there!

For those just entering the world of BlackMagic in 2021, would you still recommend the 6k as a good entry point or the 6k Pro? Preference being not having to make a purchase and then feel like you need to upgrade within a year. Thanks and great video!
Definitely the 6K Pro! I wish it was around when I was buying!
@@ChrisFranklinJr appreciate the response!
Great video, subbed 👌
Thank you so much!
