      Alan Daetwyler seriously? Brazilian jiu-jitsu came from Judo which is a part of Jiu-jitsu or jutjutsu. Carlos and Helio didn't invent BJJ . They came up a system they marketed to the public......Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not just a Gracie family art. There was more than one student of Mitsuyo Maeda . Please learn the history

    • @alandight193
      @alandight193 7 років тому +8

      Gerald Duke, my comment was more about the 10 min of the video than the 10 sec you are highlighting. I like the video because it explain what is the art, it forms, what it aims and how a "dummy" could easly understand it.
      Regarding the history of BJJ, I agree with you when u say "Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not just a Gracie family art", there are others, but I do believe that is the "Brazilian" jiu-jistu - and the Gracies at the beginning - that developed and democratized the most the ground aspect of it in the latest century. I could call it modern jiu-jitsu as opposed to Japanese or traditional jiu-jitsu (even if it already contained some high level ground techniques)
      In other words, BJJ comes from JJ but took a different path after - that's where the B letter pops out =) - and my guess is that Gustavo Gasperin was actually only talking about this last "path".

    • @geraldduke2452
      @geraldduke2452 7 років тому +2

      Alan Daetwyler actually Mitsuyo Maeda had many students....Gracie family wasn't the only one....btw the paths from Jiu-jitsu to Brazil comes though Europe then to the US to Cuba , back to the US then to South America.....or if you are speaking of figurative pads think about this Dr Kano was forming Judo ro be a sport which is why he sent students all over the world to spread it.....

    • @simonyadig
      @simonyadig 7 років тому +3

      His point was when he's explaining what BJJ is to someone who has no idea about it, this video describes the basics very well. If I was trying to explain what BJJ is to someone who is mildly interested, I wouldn't break down the entire history of the art.

  • @burnindownthehouse

    Not much emphasis here on takedowns though, although it was talked about briefly in this video. Knowing judo and the various throws involved can certainly help a BJJ practitioner to up their game in a real fight. If the throw is hard enough, it will shock your opponent and possibly hurt them, especially on a hard surface. The best example of the was the Masahiko Kimura vs. Hélio Gracie fight. Kimura, the judo specialist, was able to throw Gracie down hard with ease. Kimura eventually went on to win the fight. So, knowing your throws is very important in BJJ.

    • @henrikg1388
      @henrikg1388 4 роки тому +3

      Yes, but it is a matter of courtesy and respect. When Jigaro Kano incorporated all old style jiu-jitsu (based on fixed attack patterns, like any silly self-defense style) and incorporated it into Judo, he also made the biggest improvement to eastern grappling styles, and that is randori/sparring/rolling and full force competition. So BJJ own all of it's roots to Judo and nothing to traditional japanese jiu-jitsu, but they're to proud to admit that.
      The mafioso machisimo bullshit of the Gracies, and the myth of the Gracie "chosen one", is practically as silly as a 70s kung-fu movie, but people still buy it. It's fucking pathetic that they cannot admit that their style is all based on Judo and not any arcane secret japanese jiu-jitsu master. I say fuck the Gracies. They're just con-men. And this is no disrespect for all the great BJJ clubs out there. But not mentioning Judo as the root of their martial art, is just plain disrespectful.

    • @C.Bastard
      @C.Bastard 4 роки тому +8

      @@henrikg1388 Dude, what are you talking about? I've trained Judo and BJJ in Brazil for years and since day one of both of them classes, they mentioned the existence of one another, and always recognizing that BJJ developed from Judo, but it is a different martial arts(like Judo isnt Japanese JJ), because of the development and complexity each of the martial arts brought to its own style of figthting( judo = takedowns ; bjj = ground grappling).
      And btw, i train BJJ under Gracie Barra(where my teacher is a Judo blackbelt as well) and Judo under Emerson Ramos(who was Brazilian Team Judo coach), ur talking nonsense. I think you have this perception, since Judo isnt as big in USA as Judo and in Brazil, both BJJ and Judo are huge in Brazil.

    Professor Gasperin, thanks for representing Jiu-Jitsu as, first and foremost, a self-defense system. The 4 phases are the reason why Jiu-Jitsu is brilliant, effective, and efficient.

    Excellent explanation about what is BJJ ! ..... More of that in the variations of takedowns, guards, submissions. I believe that you should be a really good coach.
