This man is the only one who got it right. He mentioned Japanese Jui-jit-su. Huge respect.

The Best Explanation of Jiu Jitsu I Have Ever Seen. Thank you.
Antonio Garmsci except for the part that it was created by the Gracies
GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Antonio Garmsci Right? I had someone ask who hadn’t heard of it. Could not find a better explanation to send them.
Matte DeCatte Odd place to announce your personal issues, but you do you ;)
this stuff should be taught in schools to all children
I've had my second b.j.j class... after watching this it has helped me understand the art more
The kids at 6:21 are better than I am and I've been doing this shit for over 7 years.
AOJ is the answer ... Best
Michell Ruiz what tf is that
AOJ= Art Of Jiu-Jitsu It's a school run by the Mendez bros.
Count me too, and Im blue belt lol
Carzo Parazzo same here!!! That kid would destroy me lol
Excellent video. You do a tremendous job of explaining the difference between BJJ for sport and BJJ for self defense. I like how you explained the four different phases of BJJ. Every novice should watch and listen to this video to get a better understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Thank you Jeff, glad you liked it!
This is one GREAT video! Congratulations!! Next time I have to explain my art to someone, well I'll send him or her your link! You made it everything look simple and objective! Let's train now! Oss!
Alan Daetwyler seriously? Brazilian jiu-jitsu came from Judo which is a part of Jiu-jitsu or jutjutsu. Carlos and Helio didn't invent BJJ . They came up a system they marketed to the public......Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not just a Gracie family art. There was more than one student of Mitsuyo Maeda . Please learn the history
Gerald Duke, my comment was more about the 10 min of the video than the 10 sec you are highlighting. I like the video because it explain what is the art, it forms, what it aims and how a "dummy" could easly understand it.
Regarding the history of BJJ, I agree with you when u say "Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not just a Gracie family art", there are others, but I do believe that is the "Brazilian" jiu-jistu - and the Gracies at the beginning - that developed and democratized the most the ground aspect of it in the latest century. I could call it modern jiu-jitsu as opposed to Japanese or traditional jiu-jitsu (even if it already contained some high level ground techniques)
In other words, BJJ comes from JJ but took a different path after - that's where the B letter pops out =) - and my guess is that Gustavo Gasperin was actually only talking about this last "path".
Alan Daetwyler actually Mitsuyo Maeda had many students....Gracie family wasn't the only one....btw the paths from Jiu-jitsu to Brazil comes though Europe then to the US to Cuba , back to the US then to South America.....or if you are speaking of figurative pads think about this Dr Kano was forming Judo ro be a sport which is why he sent students all over the world to spread it.....
His point was when he's explaining what BJJ is to someone who has no idea about it, this video describes the basics very well. If I was trying to explain what BJJ is to someone who is mildly interested, I wouldn't break down the entire history of the art.
Alan Daetwyler Give me street rules and I guarantee that your bank is useless even the very best. On the streets you would not be able to stop a fucking knive or machete.
this was great. I was trying to explain to my 5 year old daughter that power isn't just a matter of size. I plan to train BJJ with her when she is a bit older. I think of it as a practical skill to have for a young woman
By far one of the best Intro to BJJ video I've watched.
Thank you!
I NEVER comment on videos, but this was just so incredibly detailed and helpful. Dude, thanks for this.
That was a phenomenal introduction to the art. Thank you so much.
Great presentation, made even better with the footage.
great video and much appreciated for taking the time and effort to make a clear and concise video and breaking Brazilian jiu-jitsu into a understandable segments for beginners like myself. Thank you once again!
had my 2nd BJJ class today
how is it? what do they do
@@kal1t it was cool, they showed us different techniques and then we did sparring with each other
@@codinginflow I’m scared to show up to a class and nobody will roll with me. I’m kinda shy so i feel like it’ll be hard to ask a random person to roll. Does instructor pair you up since your new?
@@sassysteve6700 My instructor paired me up yes. And we also switch partners every couple minutes when we roll. Don't let this scare you! I am also very shy.
Dear BJJ Practitioner,
I must say that you are unique teacher/ coach / trainer in explaining this Art/ Sport and fight system.
I hope you can do a seminar in the UK one day. Or maybe a live seminar via online.
Which would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Ashraf
Thanks Ashraf!
Not much emphasis here on takedowns though, although it was talked about briefly in this video. Knowing judo and the various throws involved can certainly help a BJJ practitioner to up their game in a real fight. If the throw is hard enough, it will shock your opponent and possibly hurt them, especially on a hard surface. The best example of the was the Masahiko Kimura vs. Hélio Gracie fight. Kimura, the judo specialist, was able to throw Gracie down hard with ease. Kimura eventually went on to win the fight. So, knowing your throws is very important in BJJ.
Makes it so freaking simple to explain and so simple to understand, I loved it.
great video man! really cleared stuff up and i feel like im ready going into my first lesson. thanks again!
Much respect great vid. I’ve taught my children this due to this generations cowardly attacks of use of guns and knives. Thank u
Thank you!
@Zubeen Bhuiyan shhhh, let then dream
Possibly the best explanation on the overall jiu-jitsu basics. Thanks for this vedio.
This is a great video! I started a beginner jiu jitsu class, and I was never really told what my objective is... Thank you
Dude this video was exactly what I needed as a beginner. Took me so long to find it but now I finally know what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, so thanks
You are welcome Alex!
Thank you for your excellent explanation. I knew nothing about BJJ when I came here and now I have a new sense of respect and wonder for it!
Great introduction video about Jiu Jitsu, exactly what I was looking for. I didn't know that there is so much strategy and tactics in it and at the same time it's so practical especially about fights on the ground. Thanks!
My god, the set up for that knee bar at 10:15 was absolutely beautiful. Great video.
The best video ever to explain the tactics of BJJ! Worldclass! Thank you!
WOW... it really is a great video... I'm impressed by your ability to sintetize such a wide array of concepts... Great job... Everybody, even people who have been training for long, should watch this!
Probably the best video about jiu-jitsu I've ever watched.
Brilliant! I just had my first class yesterday and you've just answered soooo many questions for me. Thank you!

Starting training 3 weeks ago... now I get it.
Thank you.
Booked a free trial class, I know nothing about BJJ, so thank you for this video!! Looking forward to next Monday
this video was really helpful, thanks! I started doing mma recently but the aim and basic mechanics of BJJ were never really explained, so this has helped me to actually understand what I should be trying to do haha
Um dos melhores vídeos sobre Jiu-Jitsu que já vi! Parabéns! Muito bem explicado.
Valeu Junior!
Great video! Gustavo is an awesome instructor
It's not like Japanese Jujutsu (kicks, punches, arm locks etc) - it's based on Judo (mostly grappling) - the naming is very confusing for historical reasons.
bjj is Judo newaza....but they never mention Judo and Jigoro Kano....The fact is that Maeda was a Judoka
Both of you are forgetting where Judo itself came from
Judo comes from Japanese jujitsu. So it’s all kind of related
Yes, but it is a matter of courtesy and respect. When Jigaro Kano incorporated all old style jiu-jitsu (based on fixed attack patterns, like any silly self-defense style) and incorporated it into Judo, he also made the biggest improvement to eastern grappling styles, and that is randori/sparring/rolling and full force competition. So BJJ own all of it's roots to Judo and nothing to traditional japanese jiu-jitsu, but they're to proud to admit that.
The mafioso machisimo bullshit of the Gracies, and the myth of the Gracie "chosen one", is practically as silly as a 70s kung-fu movie, but people still buy it. It's fucking pathetic that they cannot admit that their style is all based on Judo and not any arcane secret japanese jiu-jitsu master. I say fuck the Gracies. They're just con-men. And this is no disrespect for all the great BJJ clubs out there. But not mentioning Judo as the root of their martial art, is just plain disrespectful.
@@henrikg1388 Dude, what are you talking about? I've trained Judo and BJJ in Brazil for years and since day one of both of them classes, they mentioned the existence of one another, and always recognizing that BJJ developed from Judo, but it is a different martial arts(like Judo isnt Japanese JJ), because of the development and complexity each of the martial arts brought to its own style of figthting( judo = takedowns ; bjj = ground grappling).
And btw, i train BJJ under Gracie Barra(where my teacher is a Judo blackbelt as well) and Judo under Emerson Ramos(who was Brazilian Team Judo coach), ur talking nonsense. I think you have this perception, since Judo isnt as big in USA as Judo and in Brazil, both BJJ and Judo are huge in Brazil.
I shared this with people and they loved it. They became very interested to know more about it after seeing this. Thanks a lot!
Awesome!
Amazing video! Well presented and easy to digest! Keep up the great work!

This is by far the best explanation of what BJJ is I've ever watched. MMA Leech, could you allow contributors to propose a translation (subtitles) for this video ? I would like to show it to some friends but I don't think they will understand it well without a translation, so I'd like to contribute.
wow really informative! I enjoyed learning from you. Really interested in getting into Jiu Jitsu. Thanks!
Crystal clear explanation and a great video. Thanks man.
Loved your video. This is an excellent explanation on Jiu Jitsu. Wonderful work! I'm doing exactly what Alan Daetwyler said, and sharing the link to others who have questions about our art.
I've been looking for a great video to show people when they ask my what I'm doing at night. Thank you!

Wow, what an excellent video. A lot of work went into making this video, thank you for giving us this lesson !
No problem Petor!
Fantastic overview. Just what this newbie needed.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you for posting this video.
Thanks master, for sharing your knowledge and experience. Great jiu-jitsu description. As good as the famous "Danaher's system".
thanks for a great information , waiting for the next video,
Awesome comprehensive video of the basics 😀
I LOVE THIS VIDEO. ORGANIZATION IS KEY. KEEP MAKING THESE VIDEOS, THE SYSTEMATIZATION APPROACH IS SUPERIOR.
Thank you ! Excellent & Great video. Luv it !!!
I've been training BJJ for only 3 months and as most white belts have probably found, I learn a small amount each class but don't really know what I am doing. This video really helped me to understand the general strategy of why we are doing certain things. I still don't know what I am doing but this opened my eyes to the WHY which I think will help massively with progress and enjoyment.
how's it going
Hope you are killing it!
Thank you so much for this video I was looking for a video like this to help me better assist my son's bjj but I had no idea of the fundamentals now I get the 'point' and goal of bjj thoroughly this video is really good and I will share it thanks
Had my first Ju Jiu Jitsu lesson and watched this afterwards, really helpful, thank you!
Thanks Rudolf!
Sorry about being the grammar police, but u said "ju jiu jitsu"
Thank you. Very educational. Learn something new I had no clue 10 minutes ago.
Awesome!
Absolutely brilliant vid!
Really Clear!
lol, super good video for dummy. I practiced striking like chinese martial arts, boxing and muay thai and others, but dont appreciate the grappling until I saw this video and its concepts and submission map etc. The core is still super important like striking but moving like a slime into different positions is super important. transition between striking and ground and stand clinchings and sweeps and dumps are very important also
This is great. Thanks to whoever made it!
Great video for newbies. Thank you
excellent video. pretty much covers all the bases.
I wish I had watched this video on my first day of doing BJJ. Might have saved me a lot of confusion. Thanks!
easy understandable breakdown, thank you very much, i subscribed straight away
Outstanding overview. Thanks !
Very detail flow chart at the end. Well done.
Thank you Scott!!
This is really good. I'm basically going to parrot this when people ask me what jiu jitsu is.
The best explanation i've ever watched
great video, thanks for the explanations! very informative
Thanks a lot! Short, clear, neat!
Thank you!
could not have it explained better! thank you!
Best explanaiton for newbies ever. Great video
Very insightful info in just a 10 min video! thanks i learnt alot!
you are welcome Ally!
Professor Gasperin, thanks for representing Jiu-Jitsu as, first and foremost, a self-defense system. The 4 phases are the reason why Jiu-Jitsu is brilliant, effective, and efficient.
100%
Excellent explanation about what is BJJ ! ..... More of that in the variations of takedowns, guards, submissions. I believe that you should be a really good coach.
Great!! Congrats for so great explanation of Brazilian Jiujitso
Outstanding video!!
