"Be free little ones!" I love watching your videos, great info and it feels like im watching my friend set up a new habitat, or talking about an animal
I'm sure you've found out by now Clint, but the beauty of those CUC cuisine pucks is that they grow a huge amount of fluffy white mold. A well-established crew with lots of isopods will eat it up before that happens, but in new tanks expect a nice healthy fungal growth. It's all benign and great food for our springtail and crustacean buddies and triggers population booms in my isopod cultures. My dwarf purple isopod culture gives it a chance to bloom into fungal growth, but they're tiny. My P. scaber and P. laevis colonies, though, devour the pucks before that happens. Speaking of isopods, if you haven't already, culturing isopods (including morphs!) is really rewarding and almost no effort. Keeping an isopod colony healthy is on the difficulty level of keeping a pothos.
I know it might be hard to do it now, but you should do a series called “How to Breed ...”. Is there a possibility that you will do a series like this in the future?
Do bioactive tanks like this attract flies or gnats? Do the springtails get outside of the tanks easily? I want to put a new gecko on a desk beside my bed but...

I can’t get over their struggle for traction and their fail jumps, haha! They’re such goofy little geckos. I can’t wait to get my Mourning Geckos set up in a bioactive!
Lovely enclosure! Josh’s Frogs is honestly the best, my Mourning Gecko is having the time of her life thanks to their kit. Thank you for introducing me to both MGs and JF!
Should you lightly "ruff up" the bamboo with very fine sandpaper since one of the little critters was having a hard time climbing up one of the vertical pieces? He was cute taking one step up the bamboo then slide back two, over and over.
I'm getting some of these in about 2 weeks, and I have the cage set up, but i can't get the heating right for my 12x12x18. The mini halogen 25W are too hot but there arent any smaller bulbs. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Excellent timing. I'm putting in some upgrades to 3 different Dragon enclosures today (Bearded, Chinese, Australian) so this will help me get motivated! Thanks Clint!
I'm getting a blue tongue skink any day now, he's just a baby. I already have a crested gecko, he's 2 months old. I don't really do bioactive but this seems really fun!
I wanted to get a blue gecko and I thought a Tokay was my only option. As a first time reptile owner to be, I knew a Tokay was probably not the best gecko for me, so I thought I should start looking into different colored geckos. And then you featured these guys. I'd love to get some, but my apartment doesn't allow reptiles. I might get them as a graduation present for myself in a few years, assuming I can find an apartment by my future law school that takes reptiles.
I kept my tarantulas on a shelf in my closet that I converted to a pet care room and had my clothes in a dresser. Especially if you know they are doing an inspection you can just cover them that day.
Did you leave the plants in their nursery pots when you put them in? I was under the impression from a different tutorial that allowing plants to grow bare root in a bio tank would help maintain the soil better
You posted this literally while I was putting together my first bioactive enclosure! Also, with help from Josh's Frogs - fantastic people. I seem to have approximated what you did pretty well. Planning on having 1-2 dart frogs and 1-2 mourning geckos in a 16x16x24 corner tank. Got some small-leafed philodendron per your recommendation - and thanks to your previous video, I knew I could pull it apart a little bit so the leaves are growing in different parts of my tank! Got 2 rescues thus far (leo x1 year and corn x2 months), and I may finally actually buy from a breeder for my latest display tank! Josh's Frogs is just 2.5 hours away from me, so I may turn it into a day trip! Had to cancel my Michigan vacation this summer due to COVID so this is my replacement for my trip. Thanks for all your videos! Love learning something new!
Good video. Although personally I do not like to put so much substrate. I also don't like planting directly in it, that makes it difficult to partially change the substrate over time. I also don't like bamboo, at least for crested geckos 😰
I just put a new baby hognose in a short/wide exo-terra with a similar lid design. I forgot to slide the wire hole cover into place and she climbed up the foam background and right through the tiny holes. I think I'll name her Dini.
Hi, great video(s), I'm considering buying a gecko as a first pet and neon day geckos seem awesome, do you think that would be a good choice?. Can you actually continuously keep 2 of them in a 12x12x18 enclosure as in the video? I have seen larger 18x18x24 enclosure recommended as minimum for this species so I would love to know your opinion. Thank you.
Hey can you let Josh's Frogs know they're selling tanks less than 5 gallons (which is the minimum acceptable for fish) and promoting them as "betta tanks" when in fact a betta or any other fish needs a min of 5.
This isn’t related to this video, but what would you recommend for temps and humidity for a jeweled lacerta? I’ve been watching all your videos that mention them but haven’t heard an actual temperature or humidity percentage. I’m setting up the cage before he arrives and I have it stable at 90 degrees basking, 75 degrees cool side, with 65% humidity. What do you think? Thank you for all of your content about lacertas!
I know this is for a gecko and it looks AMAZING, but is there a way to make a bioactive enclosure for something as large as a tegu?? Would I follow these steps in the same way, or go about it differently?? Just curious. Awesome video by the way!
Could you let me know what kind of expanding foam you used? I'm setting up an enclosure for juvenile Eurys in the same enclosure and don't want them to escape!
Amazing video, would love to see more setups, aybe even a collab with SerpaDesign? 😁 I do have a question though, would it be possible to keep day geckos like these with dart frogs?
Not only is the Exo-terra not well designed for such small reptiles as those gecko's. Even fruit-flies, spring-tales, isopods and other small insects will also escape, especially trough the front. At the front windows there are two gaps in corners just below the bottom hinges. My wife didn't like to find those creepy crawlers in our living room :S.
Can you help me I'm having trouble keeping my plants alive for my crested gecko setup. I'm using a 26w uvb100 light, and a cleaning light that are both on for about an hour and a half a day. I turned it down to only an hour and a half because leaves were turning dark brown quickly. I'm misting about once a day and trying to focus on watering plant roots every other day as I had some plants that were drooping or getting yellow leaves. I have over an inch of the clay drainage balls, over an inch of Josh's coco cradle. Current plants have been in for 2 weeks so they could still be adjusting but I'm not sure. How long is your light on and how often do you water the plants?
Your videos are awesome and informative, but in my opinion you really should do a video for the beginners about the basic stuff that noone talks about and about the misleading things. As some examples: When I was a beginner I accidentaly killed an amazon tree boa, because I wanted to do the care perfectly, but I placed the hygrometer probe near the top of the enclosure, and I still tried to maintain 60-70% humidity (as the guides suggested) ... of course the animal got respiratory infection and could not be saved. (This is especially sad because the care guides were good just none of them mentioned the placement of the probe) Also there is a lot of confusion about substrates for leopard geckos and bearded dragons, and the outdated stuff just overwhelmes the state of the art informations. And due to the working principle of the google search engine, a beginner will usually meet with the 15yo articles (that got a lot of views back then).
Clint: It looks like you left the plants in their plastic pots, is that correct? Why? Also, on the lighting, the page at Josh's Frogs for Day Geckos says they need a basking spot and UV-B. Do they not need these?
I currently have a long 40gal with a mesh like lid on top. Any ideas? Can’t do snakes or anything too expensive.. or anything that drops it’s tail. Rn I have a hammie in there named Shari that’s still kickin. I plan on doing research on my next pet but need some advice.
Will that light be sufficient? I heard they need uvb, and a basking light but I also want a light my plants will grow. I don’t want to have three lights on my small enclosure.
Thanks so much! You always cheer me up, I really like the bamboo effect and those geckos are beautiful. You'll have no trouble finding those against the substrate! 🦎🌱
Would this still work for a frogs because you having another video on your Channel about making a bioactive enclosure and I just wanted to know if I should follow this video or another video. P.S love the videos

In your first day gecko video I mentioned that mine escaped out of the gap in the lid and ta da, so did yours. When they have babies they will also get out of the sliders, so I'd silicone those too!
I don't know if I missed it, but was it explained how they were escaping from the enclosure? I have the same exo terra and dont wanna risk escapes so wanna know where the point of exit was
