First you need to be aware that England was at war with Spain and Portugal in the year 1600. And Queen Elizabeth ruled England at that time. Spain had become the richest and most powerful nation on Earth after conquering the Aztecs of Mexico and stealing their gold.
Shogun is my favorite book. The original series starring Richard Chamberlain I usually watch every holiday. I was afraid the new one wouldn't live up to the 1980's version but so far it's been amazing. 👌
They can't have Portuguese as Portuguese in the show otherwise the entire show will be subtitled, I guess that limits the audience and not viable enough to get big ratings. Also another reason is that you got to find actors proficient in Japanese and Portuguese and be excellent, which is hard to do. I think they did an excellent job on laying the groundwork in this show.
The Japanese that is spoken is period Japanese, so it is not current Japanese. The equivalent is Early Modern English or "Shakespearean English" with out the rhyme. If they would do the same with Portuguese, the actors would have to speak convincing period Portuguese. On top of that, how many viewers would watch a whole show with only subtitles? I certainly have no issue with it, as you don't, but many do. Therefore, they had to make a creative and economic choice. After all they want people to watch it.
@@PhilipManzano I understand, 🙂As chance1774 pointed out, and you know, the story is based on real history. John Blackthorn is a stand in for the real person William Adams who was an Englishman who sailed for the Dutch. He was the first Englishman in Japan. I won't write more because I might spoil something. Enjoy!
Bit late to the party but the reason they substitute English for Portugese is there is very little chance for Blackthrone to ever speak it. His crew is Dutch and the only other languages that are spoken in the entirity of Japan, other than Japaneese is either Portugese or occasionally Latin. The only time he could ever talk English would be to himself.
to clarify a couple things: this show is based on a book and the characters in it are based on real people. when they’re speaking english in this show, they’re really speaking portuguese. japan had only met portuguese white people at this point so if they spoke something other than japanese, that was it. the man john is based on was a polyglot and spoke many languages. the baby had to die because his dumb dad spoke out of turn but then offered to end his life AND his bloodline. a courtesan is a very fancy and well trained s3x worker. there’s a video on the fx channel that gives a bit of insight into the world of shogun and was very helpful for me when figuring out what kind of setting we were getting into. i think it’s 6 or 7 minutes? i definitely recommend checking it out. there’s no spoilers. hope some of this helped!! edit: it’s 6 minutes and called “the history and background of shogun”.
I remember watching the original Shogun when I was a kid back in the early '80s this version is vastly superior and more realistic it's a great show over all

For sure. Makes a lot of sense. I just think the fact that he was also English is what really made me think twice haha.

Yeah that totally makes sense. I think it’s that fact that he was also English that really made me doubt haha.

He committed to end his bloodline, so the baby obviously had to go as well.

The actor who played the semi-helpful Rogrigues character in the 80s mini-series was Gimli from LoTR.
