I love Brandon Ellis style his riffage and soloing are so dope. Ellis, Josh Middleton, Jeff Loomis, Alexi Liaho RIP, Dave Davidson are probably my top 5 I listen to right now. All time favorites though is a whole different story lol.
Vogg! This man is the one of the greatest not only guitarists but musicians of all time for me personally. His musical education, his heaviness, his technique are insane. Just think that Decapitated, heavy, brutal band from Poland, not USA, became so famous without internet! And they inspired so many modern bands and guitarists. We are blessed to have Vogg in our lives!
As soon as Rob said "let me know who..." I immediately scrolled down --and you beat me to it. Jeff is a monster and I think the most criminally underrated player.
Chimaira and Decapitated are my two favorite metal bands of all time. This is awesome watching the lead guitarist from one talk about the guitarist for the other. You guys have wrote some amazing songs with incredible riffs and grooves. Thanks for all the great music.
Cancer Culture is by far the best album I’ve heard in a while. Vogg is a bad bad man. Decapitated is coming to town soon and I’ll be there for sure. Josh from Sylosis is a really killer modern player too.
Wes Hauch is in this category for me, he’s been around a while but I only found out about him when listening the the Alluvial album Sarcoma, it’s brilliant. Also Josh Baines from malevolence, his playing is awesome
I would have to say for my Top 5 would be: Mateo Mancuso Wes Hauch Emil Westler Rob Arnold Tosin Abasi I definitely had to put you in my list, you and Chimaira got me through my military days and you are one of the reasons why I play guitar today! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart! 🤘🏼
Peter Wichers and Ola Frenning were an amazing guitar duo on those first bunch of Soilwork albums imo up to Stabbing the Drama then it got weird with member changes and such.
Just want to take the time to point out you are one of my favorite modern players. Your work in Chimaira heavily influenced me as a guitarist. Honorable mention, Adam Tanbouz from He Is Legend is amazing.
spot on w/ the marty/fredrik comp. tim henson to me, is also one sick dude, i'm not sure if guthrie and him ever did something, but that would be pretty sick
Don't know if Fred Akesson is the BEST Modern Metal player or Not but i love the guy as person and musician , just hopes he will get a better diet someday legit worrying about his physical health now i suggest to also look for Guitarist from very overlook bands such THE FROWNING, and RUSSIAN CIRCLES or MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY just as honorable mentioning for modern Sounds (modern by the time i wrote this i mean)

I have many metal tutorials here on the channel, and many of them are aimed towards beginners! What specifically are you interested in? I'll point you in the right direction!
My favourite modern player is Nick DePirro from Night Verses and Headcave. He's a riff machine and such an inventive player. Definitely check him out if you aren't familiar with is playing Rob!
Ohh man he is so awesome, he used to do twitch streams, but hasn't done any for awhile. His twitch stream albums on Apple Music are better than most metal albums put out lately in my opinion. Night Verses is so awesome!
I like Olly Steele's work a lot, especially his instrumental track: open. Also a really big fan of Toeshiki soejima, yas Nomura and ichika nito. Also adam dutkiewicz especially when he wears a viking helmet, cape and sings backup vocals.
Those Decap albums you mentioned there are absolutely amazing. Im not massive on the newer stuff if im honest. Doesnt have that vibe from back in the day.
Top 5 Rob Arnold ( chimaira ) Jim root ( Slipnkot ) Phil manansala ( Of Mice & Men ) Alan Ashby ( Of Micr & Men ) Brian head Welch ( Korn and Love & death ) 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great list! One of my favorites that's not on here is Wes Hauch, absolute monster player. From Alluvial. Vogg is insane. My band did a couple small tours with Decapitated, and getting to hear Vogg just tear it up, especially at sound check was just incredible. Check out their more modern song Homo sum, which has one of the most brutal right hand precise machine gun type riffs ever made. And yes Guthrie Govan is an absolute legend. Probably the best guitarist ever? He can just play anything.
I always get notifications when rob uploads a video when I’m work so I’ll step outside too smoke and watch every vid and short I absolutely love his content

i saw decapitated live last month. they were headlining and obscura were the support band. crazy show, people stage diving during decapitated's whole set, which vogg didn't like. im pretty sure i saw a woman stage diving without any knickers on. they played the entire Nihility album, plus their more recent stuff
You, mark mortin from lamb of god, Jim root, mick Thompson, mark tremonti, Adam jones. UA-cam guitarist, Ola englund, rabea massaad, Xander Raymond Charles
Definitely see the influence between between yourself and the players you listed. My list of post 2005 players are however completely different… 1. Spiro Dussias ( DUDE… this man is scary ) 2. Icaro Paiva 3. Stephen Taranto 4. Scott Carstairs ( Fallujah ) 5. Peter Joseph ( ex- The Absence ) Honorable mention, 6. Filipe Rosset ( he can play the tapping parts to ‘Eruption’ and Metallica’s ‘One’ with only one hand… HE’S ABSOLUTELY NUTS )
My favourite era of Opeth is everything from Salvation/damnation. Although it took me about 8 years to appreciate the newer Opeth style. I still get frustrated attempting to play Spheres of madness. 😅 And Guthrie, found him recently while researching Victory amps, and loooove his style. His iprov is next level and his feel is like nothing I've experienced. And of course, you dude!. I remember hearing your middle eastern influence on the solo on Cleansation, the way it fit so seamlessly. Then seeing the progression in your writing over the years. 👊
Hey right on man! 👊 I appreciate that! Glad things eventually came around for you with newer Opeth. If you haven't checked it out yet, I recommend the Pale Communion album. I absolutely love it, and it's my background music anytime I'm changing strings or something. Sphere's of Madness rules! 🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld I love all the new Opeth now. That changed a few years back when I started getting into stoner rock, then I went back and listened to Heritage and everything after, I loved it. And a correction!, been love everything after Still Life. I got release dates mixed up.
I dont know if I should call my fav but I remember mentioned their band because people in comments keep saying the guitars werent plug in. But they are for sure super modern!! Patrick Somoulay and Charles Caswell from the band Reflections. Check the video " And found". Maybe you didnt see them and thank you again Rob for another cool video ❤🤘🏻🎸
Great list and thanks for sharing!!! You have been in my top 5 from the moment i first heard Chimaira so it’s super cool to hear YOUR list!! I absolutely LOVE Giacomos style!!! You cant help but smile while watching him! 🤘🤙
As others have said, brandon ellis. But an extremely underrated guitarist in my opinion is andy gillion. Dude is an incredible musician. He's like the modern modern day Mikael akerfeldt
Great list mate, the metal guys are absolute monsters. I’ve come across Giacomo before and his playing is so much fun. Truly outside my wheelhouse but great to watch!
In no order and just for fun (just opened the video and haven’t watched it yet so I don’t get influenced lol). 1. Jeff Loomis 2. Chris Broderick 3. Mark Tremonti (don’t wanna hear it, Tremonti (the band) is bad ass. 4. Vogg from Decapitated 5. John Petrucci Bonus - John 5! Dude shreds! Zombie, yes, Crue, no lolol.
Oh, and Rob, you’d totally be on there but I assumed we couldn’t pick you for some reason lol. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you’re like a non sloppy Kirk Hammett. Pretty much every solo on Self Titled is one of my favorites. That intro/repeat riff on Salvation is especially glorious.
We both had Vogg as 4, I swear to god I didn’t watch it first lol. I was actually stoked to hear he’s out of Machine Head, I love Robb but he does better on his own. The newer decap CDs are sick dude. Siiiiick. Better than the old shit. You will love it. The last two albums FUCKIN SLAY!
I have to concur with your statement "unless you're slicing 🍞 for the first time". I realized a while back no matter how many bass or guitar lines I learn it's all been done before in one form or another. My picks would be Vogg (Decapitated, is still putting out the monster Death Metal, 2 Erik Ruttan of Corpse, Morbid Angel and Hate Eternal, 3 Dallas T. Wade of Nile and Narcotic Wasteland and I really don't wanna sound like a brown noser but Chimaira is my favorite American Heavy Metal band to put out a record after the turn of the century in 2001. So I'll leave it at that. To me it was taking Metallica and Pantera and putting a new spin on it. Those are my favorites. It's not just about the skill it's about creating something that makes me keep listening. That's the most important aspect of music IMHO.
@@Durkhead Thanks bro 👊 👍👍 these are guitarist I take lots of influence from. Now the trick is to be able to play their stuff from front to back. Great challenge!
Bro! You must check Emil Werstler from Daath. This man is absolutely unique. Crazy technical stuff, when death or black metal meets jazz scales. It sounds so interesting and brutal at the same time. His solos are insane, especially when he plays metal stuff on big hollow body PRS JA MODEL. It’s pure metal, so check him out! It’s really top 1!
Emil is definitely a modern legend, and a great friend! He played in my band Chimaira for a couple years, and then when I left the band back in late 2011, he took over my spot! So needless to say, I know him well! 🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld lol. I was sure that you don’t need to “check” Emil, cause you must heard about him and his awesome guitar playing. But I absolutely forgot that he plays with chimaira haha :) Just lost some memory puzzles. So my point was, that Emil is better that anyone in your list for me. He’s playing is mind blowing!
I would be curious to know who some of your favorite song writers are. I feel like there can be a big difference between simply being good at guitar and being a good song writer.
Do you listen to Revocation, Rob? Dave Davidson to me is the best guitarist in all of the different metal genre's. Definitely check him out if you're not familiar.
Tbh i dont really care how many notes you can hit per second, or how many sweeps you can do, its all about the feel! I need players with soul, not a contest to see who can do what! Vogg tho..
Hey Rob, I know it’s not your style, and I know proper musicians hate the question, “Who’s the best?” But I’m begging you… someone asked Steve Vai that question and he answered, “consider this, understand that, blah blah blah,” before finally answering TOMMY EMMANUEL. Before Chet Atkins passed, he declared Tommy Emmanuel the last living guitar virtuoso. Older guy now, Australian, does stuff that’ll blow your mind. Saw him live twice. All acoustic. Beautiful, blazing fast, absolute perfection. Again, not your style, but begging you give him 15 minutes of listening. You’ll freak.
The Opeth guys I agree with, the others....not so much. Playing some licks on YT where you have infinite takes to get it perfect does not put you on the level of an actual touring, in-a-band guitarist/songwriter in my book. It's the same reason I'll take a Wayne Static or Buz McGrath over a Yellow Mushystein anyday. Being able to write a real (and good) song is a huge criteria for me when judging a guitarist - as is the ability to perform live in front of an audience. I'll admit I am biased against Vogg. I do like the latest Decapitated album quite a bit, but him being in MH just left a sour taste in my mouth. I know it's not the dude's fault, and I'm keenly aware of why his playing sometimes irritates me: I feel his contributions on the latest MH album made it feel a lot less like MH than any other album they've ever done. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but I'm getting closer with each listen. (The whammy bar harmonics thing is definitely one musical cliche that didn't sound right with the rest of the music.) It's a good album, and way better than most bands, but it's still just a little off. I'd rather spin Unto the Locust, TMTC, or even The Burning Red more than OKAC. Regardless, it's still always fun to watch your vids, Rob. I love your humility and honesty, too, man - hanging a lampshade on the fact that you stole that kid's vids was hilarious!
Hey cheers for the man 👊 and I agree with you! Btw, I'm actually embarrassed to say, but I had no idea that Vogg participated in any Machine Head recordings! I always just thought he was a hired gun for a few tours.
@@RobArnoldWorld Yessir! Robb did a TON of press and interviews for OKAC and he reiterated time and again that Vogg wrote part of the album and how well they played and bounced ideas of each other. He really made it sound like he was going to be a permanent member, and then this last week we got "we all knew this was going to happen sooner or later". I'm very interested to see who replaces him. I'd love to see Logan Mader make a return, as he played on at LEAST one song on OKAC ("My Hands Are Empty") and I think more than that. (Sidenote, Chris Kontos from the orginal MH lineup also played on that song, leaving Adam Duce as the only original member to not come back for that track.) Of course, I'd be very pleased to see Phil Demmel make a return to the band as well.
Ahh right on. I've yet to check out OKAC. MH was just here in Cleveland a week or two ago, and I didn't know about it until after the fact! Bummed! I doubt we'll see Phil return, as I feel there's some bad blood, and of course he's now in Kerry Kings band. But I agree that a return from Logan would be epic!@@TheRealCeeJai
@@RobArnoldWorld Yep. I saw them in Pittsburgh the night before or after that show lol...off topic but did you see Sevendust and Static-X?! That was a helluva show! Might have to revise my top 10 guitarists list to find room for John Connolly!
Guthrie Govan! I remember hearing Fives in 2007 when my brother bought the album and was blown away by how awesome it was. Here’s a few recommendations if you don’t know them…Allan Holdsworth, Michael Keene. 🤘🏻
Chris wiseman from currents and keaton goldwing from invent animate are a lot kf peoples fvaorite modern players right now when yoh look at the comment's on the play throughs. Both those bands have the most awesome riffs while still being catchy in a way and super groovy

As others have said, brandon ellis. But an extremely underrated guitarist in my opinion is andy gillion. Dude is an incredible musician. He's like the modern modern day Mikael akerfeldt
Thanks for turning me onto Giacomo!
Great list mate, the metal guys are absolute monsters. I’ve come across Giacomo before and his playing is so much fun. Truly outside my wheelhouse but great to watch!
Right on! Yeah man, Giacomo rules, and I agree about it being a bit outside the wheelhouse!
Josh Meader I think is who takes the cake for me. Max Ostro is a close second.
Hey, Rob! If you haven't already, I would highly recommend checking out Matteo Mancuso. Absolutely killer playing!
I was just introduced to Matteo on one of @rickbeato's latest videos!🎸
How about Josh Middleton from Sylosis?
I came here to say that, lol
I'm surprised you didn't mention Charlie Parra. You introduced me to him last time you were in Phoenix.
You might have me mixed up with someone else bro! Never heard of Charlie Parra.
Slapping and popping on a guitar, that's some precision.
Mikael and Fredik are very great!!
Duuuuudeeee. Jason Richardson!!!!!!
Great list👊🏻💀🤘🏻
Rob besides the Negation by Decapitated. Check out there Album WINDS OF CREATION that album is insane bro big fan chimaira rules.
Cheers dude!
Watching from the island of Mauritius 🇲🇺
Awesome!🎸
Personally my modern favorites are Mick Gordon & Andrew Hulshult. Every game soundtrack those dudes have made always kick ass.
In no order and just for fun (just opened the video and haven’t watched it yet so I don’t get influenced lol).
1. Jeff Loomis
2. Chris Broderick
3. Mark Tremonti (don’t wanna hear it, Tremonti (the band) is bad ass.
4. Vogg from Decapitated
5. John Petrucci
Bonus - John 5!
And that Mr slap pop dude was nutz!
Jason Richardson has to be my favorite modern guitarist. Guy is insane.
My favorite guitar player is Charles Caswell from Berried Alive
I love you videos Rob
👊
Cammybee is ridiculous to watch. So good.
Right?!🎸
I have to concur with your statement "unless you're slicing 🍞 for the first time".
'Good artists copy, great artists steal. '
👊 Right on! And I love that list of death metal greats! 🤘
@@Alex-Del-Reylol...my list is better than your list 😂
@@ALLforROME It doesn’t matter. But maybe for Rob, Emil is the best too. But he don’t want to you include him, because he’s playing in Chimaira)
I really enjoyed his work on Crown
David Davidson of Revocation deserves more attention and credit.
I was extremely disappointed that you did not mention Wes Hauch
I would be curious to know who some of your favorite song writers are. I feel like there can be a big difference between simply being good at guitar and being a good song writer.
I totally agree man! I also look for that quality in guitarists, and Vogg and Mikael Akerfeldt are great examples of that!
Lazarus is one of the best Metal songs I've ever heard ❤
👊
Do you listen to Revocation, Rob? Dave Davidson to me is the best guitarist in all of the different metal genre's. Definitely check him out if you're not familiar.
Dave rules!
Giacomo Turra and a Louis Cole collab would be sick!
Maybe I should do a drummer top 5!
@@RobArnoldWorld that would be awesome 🤘
mateo mancuso is the new guitar god
did you know that Fredrik played leads on Ghost's latest album?
I think Brandon Ellis is currently the best metal guitar player in the game
I saw a headline about that! I'll be interested to hear it.
Tbh i dont really care how many notes you can hit per second, or how many sweeps you can do, its all about the feel! I need players with soul, not a contest to see who can do what!
Vogg tho..
Jeff Loomis and Brandon Ellis
Oh I'm very aware of the god-like playing from Mr. Emmanuel! 🤘
Hey Rob! If you haven’t yet, check out the guys from Orbit Culture, they are my favorite modern metal band in a sea of mediocrity 🤘🏼
🤘
Decap One Eyed Nation
First like 👊🏻
Haha I love it Sam! 👊
VOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!
I did not! Never was a Static fan, but Sevendust rules!@@TheRealCeeJai
For me Guthrie is the greatest to ever touch a guitar.
So, how intimdated is you by thinking that you'd need to Jam with the man Guthrie?
I don't understand the question!
@@RobArnoldWorld imagine having to jam with Guthrie... hiw intimidaring is that?
Oh! Gotcha! Yes... EXTREMEMLY intimidating for sure! 😬@@papaemeritus4544
My guy, how you not put yourself on there? Even Sucof thinks your great.
Well I appreciate that big time bro, but how would it look if I put myself on my own list! 🤘🤣
@@RobArnoldWorldand comin' in at #1 guy's...that's right...MEEEEE! 😂 🎉 😂
