    Just a side note: I could have gone into way more detail on the diference in drivers, price, weight, ex.. All of which play into why one series is better than another. Example: the JBL prx cabinets are using lower end transducers and drivers vs The JBL srx which are using the same driver technology found in their high end touring systems. Makes a huge difference in sound and how well the speakers can take advantage of the amplifier power available to them.Also this video was not meant to cover tour grade powered speakers: Such as RCF TT series, JBL VRX, or JBL Vertec. As these lines are very expensive and not really mobile DJ realm.

      +Elisha Soussan well I stated that this list consisted of speakers I have heard and seen be popular in my area. I know yorkville is a killer company and I did demo them once about 3 yesrs ago. But I havent actually hesrd them out at gigs and no one in my area uses them. So for me to give an honest opinion on them... I really cant unfortunately. Same goes for rcf, turbosound, fbt and many other really good vrands out there.

    My favorite powered mobile DJ speakers are the Bose F1s, you can fit both the 2 subs and 2 tops in the trunk of even a compact sedan along with the DJ booth, cables, a DJ console, and some DMX lights. You can use them in large venues to the point where you have to use line array systems. Also, I prefer the Bose sound over JBL although I like the sound of both of them. I would definitely bite the bullet on Bose F1s if I were to be a mobile DJ. I’ve heard Bose PA systems in person and they sound very smooth and crystal clear.

    MY opinions:QSC=very nice sound,deep bass...very good for weddings,a little bit too pricy JBL-lighweight and good for big rooms,very natural sound,big thumping bass..good for mobile DJs EV-clean and loud,lots of models,good for instalations and they look very good FBT-very good sound,natural and clean,lightweight and everything they has is amazing but they are too expensive(normaly worth the price) RCF-about the same as FBT but they has some cheaper models and they sound different...RCF speakers are good for bands and outfoor events TURBOSOUND-very loud and ok sounding speakers for affordable price but maybe too heavy and subwoofers are not really that good but tops are amazing ALTO-good speakers for the price you can build awesome budget system YAMAHA-very loud and goof sounding but they are very loosing in sound from big distances and outdoors....that are just my opinions about different speaker brands that i somehow find out during the fifferent tests events and videos...sorry for my bad english im only 15 years old and im not from a country where is english speaken

    Gents, I’m relatively new at DJing, but I been a sound system enthusiast for 40years. I currently run 2 QSC K-subs (2 12” drivers in each cabinet) with 2 EV ZLX15 tops. In general it works, however it lacks to impress me.
    I don’t ding the bass gets to the dance floor, and I find the highs a bit harsh in the midrange and dull in the high clarity. It will be time to step up in both tops and subs. I have 4 Cerwin Vega AT-12 home stereo speakers my dad purchased in 1988 that still play great.
    I would like to also consider the new line of CV active pro audio speakers. I have always been partial to JBL in Mobil, Home and pro audio. It is a tricky choice to make when buying speakers today. Thanks for the reviews, it helps greatly.
    One think I can give the older Ksubs I have, they are very well built and reliable. Casters, good amps, robust construction. I wish they delivered more bass fwd.

    Hi Rick, great video again! Owning both RCF (Evox) and EV, I can share with you that the high/mid sound output of the Evox series is truly amazing. One downside for me: Although the system is featuring a subwoofer, it feels more like a mid-bass unit which can hit hard, but it lacks in the deep end. Combining the Evox system with one or two big subs, and you have system that has huge out capability.
    I live in Europe, in the Netherlands where both EV and JBL a very popular too. Another popular EU brand is HK.
    Keep up the good work for the DJ community!

    Peak Power doesn't mean much in actual audio output its all about Watts RMS rating.

    • @icontv2379
      @icontv2379 7 років тому +2

      exactly

    • @grafxnrg
      @grafxnrg 7 років тому +1

      Yes! RMS/Continuous is what counts in real world use. The claims of 1000 watts or more are based on Peak, meaning that the speaker can handle a few sharp hits, some can only handle one sharp hit - say, from a Microphone feedback or accidental pop from interference during connection. 1000 watts usually translates to only 200 to 300 watts of good clean clear sound, anything beyond that is distortion or muddy sound. Plus, most P.A. active/powered systems can get really hot if pushed beyond heir limits, causing that distortion or muddy sound. There is a reason why most big concerts in huge stadiums still use S.R. (Sound Reinforcement) Systems or passive speakers (Crossovers, Equalizers, Separate Amps, etc.) instead of Active or Powered speakers. Powered speakers have come a long way, but don't let them fool you with those plastic cabinets and unrealistic Watts ratings. Heavier cabinets that have real wood can offer better acoustics, there is a reason those bass bottom subwoofers feel so heavy. Another thing to consider is the decibel levels and speaker placement.

    • @Pauluz
      @Pauluz 7 років тому +4

      Jimmy Spin Exactly what Kris said. There is a lot of controversy of how companies are measuring SPL and Watts. So it makes it really hard to compare different brand solely on numbers. On a general note you could argue that you're only paying for output (SPL) if you compare speakers from the same manufacturer: e.g. the EV EKX and ETX are very similar in terms of sound quality. But the ETX goes a bit louder.
      For subwoofers this can be interesting: why go for a very very expensive subwoofer that goes a bit louder. Or just go for 2 that will only cost 2/3 of one expensive sub, with similar output.

    • @djilyaz
      @djilyaz 7 років тому +1

    • @Thetimrobertson

    • @officialWWM
      @officialWWM 6 років тому +2

      SPL is usually measured at 1 metre but that's not a good way to measure all these new column arrays that are hitting the market cause their sound doesn't develop till you are several metres away due to the number of speakers in them.

    You can't give a fair review without throwing the yamaha dsr series cabinets in the mix. In fact my opinion is that for the money not only does the DSR cabinet sound better it has more technology and sound processing built in and furthermore the newer DZR Series cabinets will easily and handily walk all over thr ETX and thr SRXP series speakers hands down. Better, more natural sound, louder, hit harder and more features. Don't sleep on the Yamaha Brand.

    Best Active Powered Speakers by BRAND: 1.) QSC, 2.) EV (Electro-Voice), 3.) RCF, 4.) JBL, 5.) Cerwin-Vega!, 6.) Mackie, 7.) BOSE, 8.) Yamaha, 9.) Peavey, 10.) Behringer with a notable mention to Rockville. I personally own JBL (EON612), Mackie (Thump 12), and Cerwin-Vega! (P1500x and P1000x - Pair of each) for Subwoofers I use Cerwin-Vega! (CVA-15 and CVA-18 Pair of each). I find myself using the Cerwin Vegas more often, since the sound is so clear, clean and the bass is amazing. My two cents just from experience - Sound wise - Highs and Mids are better handled by smaller speakers 8inch- 10inch. The bose l1 compact has small approx 2- inch driver speakers and an 8inch bass speaker so good to get the higher fidelity range. The 15inch speaker size is an ideal sub for that bottom end punch and the 18inches are for that very low boom so not that needed in most cases.
    I now use 2 x 8inch speaker ( for mids and highs ) tops on poles 1 x 15inch sub ( for punchy bass for dance floor) and and a bose l1 compact for ceremony and monitor speaker/ to fill in the sound gaps for reception. I think you need a range of different sized quality speakers to produce a great sound. Just from my experience popularity doesn't necessarily mean better. I bought the Bose L1 model 1 also however would not really recommend them for the dancefloor/DJ.
    DJ wise - you need portable ,( can you lift the thing/wheels) no more than 30-40 kg durable, aesthetic/cable tidy, balance sound - to cover situations like ceremony and and dancing. Loud ain't everything so RMS is probably over stated.

      @@fordmondeo3320 Yes, I compared EV, JBL, Bose and QSC. I can say that all of them sounded amazing however, Mackie sounded more flat to me, as well as QSC speakers. The reason that I have chosen Mackie is because it's price-performance. They were on Labor Day sale and I had a good deal. Besides that I have been using Mackie studio monitors that never made any problem for more that ten years. I trust the brand. If you are look for flat sound, you can also go for QSC speakers but you will definitely need a sub. I think they produce max 12'. If you have more questions, let me know.

    Nice review. The only number that matters as far as power is concerned is the db SPL. Peak power is pointless, RMS is better but SPL tells you how loud they go. Also try and look for continuous SPL not max. 40 years playing to big crowds and screaming kids and I will only use RCF night after night, never a problem and you can clip them to death and they will still come back fighting. Just my preference.

    Over here in the uk im running IMG Stageline 15" tops, the part number for them are PAB-15P
    There not very common as far as i know, there part of the brand Monacor if you heard of them?
    The stock subwoofers that come in the box arent very good, i blew a pair playing Faithless-insomnia, with a very matched amplifier
    But i changed the subwoofers for Eminence 500 watt subwoofers
    The actual cabinets are very durable, there wooden cabinets, old style rectangular cube shaped, they have good carry handles on them, and they have enough volume to produce good bass, and the horns are excellent, the horns have never let me down
    There passive speakers, so they have a 1/4 inch jack in the back, and bare wire spring/clamp connectors
    Since buying them i have fitted Speakon connectors to them, and there up to todays standards
    I have never had them on stands, i have never been able to afford stands for them, and there way too heavy to lift on to stands anyway, but even stood on the floor they push the music through the crowd
    I have done weddings in massive hotel function rooms, at large village halls, small bars packed with people, and everyones been able to hear me, even did a disco at a venue that caters for live bands with a massive auditorium, that was cool
    So yeah, like i mentioned on a previous post, there gonna become carnival speakers, i have registered a business as a travelling showman, im building my first ride as we speak ready for next summer, and those speakers and amplifiers are gonna join the carnival, when i was doing discos i only ever had 2 of them, but now i have 8
    Im undecided whether to buy 18" subwoofers or not, i think with 8 15's round the platform it will be loud enough

The 4400 watts of peak power really give you alot of headroom, it's active 1400 watts

  • @elvispresley9442
    @elvispresley9442 2 роки тому

    Backing you up here Rick with some science of RMS vs Max power.
    Wattage is how much power the amp produces and yes RMS is a better amp rating. Decibels are the right way to rate a speaker. the ear hears on a logarithmic scale and also the smallest smallest change in loudness an ear can detect is 1 dB. Double the power gives 3 dB, this is what we perceive as turning up a notch for a noticable difference the same effect as adding a second speaker. A speaker is rated from having 1 watt into the speaker and at 1metre away (40 inches away) the DB meter is placed and measures the dB sensitivity. As an example, if the driver is made well it will be efficient and have a stiff and short excursion cone and say it gives 100 dB at one watt. a second speaker has a large surround and big excursion usually it is less efficient (Car sub style) and say it gives 90 dB at one watt. 10 dB apart. Double the loudness is 10 dB and that is 10 times the power output of the amp at the starting level.
    example of car speaker
    1watt=90 dB
    2watt=93 dB
    4watt=96 dB
    8watt=99 dB 2 times the original 1 watt power we started with will bring it up 1 db to 10 watts which is 10 dB above the start value and 10 times the power of the first power lever used. This is where the Pro audio or hi fi speaker starts
    16watt=102 db
    32watt=105 dB
    64watt=108 db 2x the original level of 8 watts is 16 watts and brings up the power to 80 watts and 109 dB 10 times the power of the original 8 watts
    128watt=111 db
    256watt= 114 dB
    512watt=117 dB 2 x original wattage of 64 watts is 128 added to 512 which is 640 watts at 118 dB which is 10 times the 64 watt start power 10 dB lower
    1024watt=120 dB
    so the higher the wattage a good speaker can pout out the dB but if a manufacturer doesnt show the dB rating it is because they cant hit the pro level output fo that speaker. 130 dB or better is a pro level SPL and has a tru RMS amp.
    RMS is sustained power and DB output
    Max is what it may hit with transients but is again only 3dB every so often so is turned up a notch every so often and not really a big difference

I say this for two reasons the sound resonates better in a wood cab and they are easier and less prone to damage on the road and when used in monitor config.

    Because watts don't mean anything I looked for the DSP or DSPL ratting. And if its at 1 meter away? That tells you more of the output it can produce. Now remember a cheap off brand speaker can have a high output DSPL but would it sound good is the question. That's when picking your brand is your own preference. What sounds good to you might not be the same for others. And what music you play mostly is a factor in making that choice.

    DJ Rick Web Just my two cents (one year later from the original video post) i agree with you on the rankings (even here in Canada) i shopped for my speakers in 2016 and hesitated between the JBL and the QSC finaly deciding on the QSC KW serie due to their response with my music of choice (house and techno). I also tested the FBT as a friend of mine owns some and they're pretty good too. The EV and YORKVILLE ones did sound as powerfull but lacked in detail and transparency and i didn't like them as much as the others i've tested. I do dj, music production and mixdown / mastering for a living for years now so the views i express while certainly well informed apply mostly to the kind of music i play and produce (house and techno) and it might differ from someone playing other genres (pop or country music for example).

      It depends on where it's most sensitive. The compression horns on my speakers are getting on for 110 dB (I don't know it's just a guess) sensitive in the upper mids, but they overtake the rest of the sound by such a large margin that they must be equalised out. Sensitivity ranges from that down to the higher 90s likely in the midbass range. The speakers are Bill Fitzmaurice Omni Top 12 with Eminence Kappalite 3012HO and Beyma CD10fe drivers installed. The drivers are rated for 400 watts AES.

    you obviously have not used or know much about a true american company PEAVEY they carry all of the systems you talked about in your video and in my own opinion PEAVEY is one of the better systems out there because they have a name of being a work horse in the area of sound systems for bands and DJ systems they are known for the Black Widow speakers and the Pro Rider speakers that are best known if you should push your system too far it is easily repaired with out having to replace the whole speaker and not costing you so much to do so in short a cheap easy fast fix if needed.
    some might feel there are better but if your looking for a good dependable fair priced speakers PEAVEY is a good way to go
    PEAVEY offers base systems but the RBN, Darkmatter, and SP, poweres series speakers are all good dependable speakers worth looking into

      Great review. As I said these are speakers I have a lot experience with that I mention. Stuff like Peavy and Yamaha I have heard its but dont have enough experience to put in the video.

      Dave Gorley peavey is a shell of its former self. If this was 1989 then yea buy peavey. In 2019 not a chance in hell. I’d rather run alto speakers

    Had a pair of EV ZLX12 (active) I've never had a speaker blow more then 4 times in a span of 1month.
    Sold those and got myself a pair of Wharfedale Pro EVP-X15 and a pair of JBL EON 15G2

      Serious? I was about to get the zlx12p because they are light. I have the eon g2s now.

      I have had the same 2 zlx12p for the last 3 years, never had a blow, if you blow them, learn how to use them.

      They're just a shit box, I've turned a few people away from those boxes, they're just good for being used as door stops lol.
      Those aren't the boxes i'd take to a high end jobs, especially when we do corporate work, not good. 2 months of having them, i sold them and got myself better sounding speakers.
      ZLX are the cheap range of speakers from EV, wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

      @djilyaz We have the EON G2s and they sound and have lasted much longer then the EV ZLX series.
      We've gone with JBLs and RCF Speakers.

      I've heard them (zlx12p) at various gigs, and they sounded pretty good, it's a toss up now between the zlx12p and Yamaha dbr12, same weight, Yamaha is slightly more expensive.

    U also need to test the sound with a decibel meter to justify which speaker is louder
