    I am a fan of these 2 brands all day. But i use the JBL for Subs And EV for tops. I love the clear and deep bass the JBL produces and the clear Vocal the EV gives. Cant go wrong with either of the 2

      Hey DJ Ell Ess I have a question for you, I have 4 subs. 2 prx718s and 2 vrx918s. When I play each series by themself they sound great but when I try to play one prx sub with the other 2 vrx subs they sound a bit off. I've realized that when I have them close to one another I need to switch the phase on the prx to 180 and if I have them spaced it sounds louder with the prx on 0 phase. But when doing this, even though it sounds louder, it sounds out of phase to my ears. Do the vrx subs naturally play with reverse phase? And is it a bad idea to mix the subs ? How can I combat this?

      solavarria1 top end seemed more open on the ETX but the vocal intelligibility was better on the SRX. Much better around 1k. But I find the ETX to me a little too much mud around 300hz where the SRX was a little cleaner in the low mids. And then finally the ETX was almost a little tubby and had lower bottom end extension.

    What Rick Web is trying to explain to all you guys is the following:
    Every single powered speaker comes factory with their DSP tuned to delivered the best sound possible, The JBL on the other hand, comes with it's DSP FLAT so every single user can tune it to their specific specs of preference. Why EV has more Punchy Sound( as Barr say) out of the box? because its DSP comes factory tune, even though it's DSP comes with a Bass Mid and Treble adjust is just a boost.
    You never mess up with your mixer to get more bass, mids and treble, you mess with EQ's, Xovers and DSP (Driverack). If you could measure the separate gains on Treble, Mid and Bass on EV you would probably come up with something like Treble +5db, Mid -2db, Bass +4db, and on the JBL will be Treble 0db, Mid 0db, Bass 0db.
    Now just by getting into the DSP on the JBL via its App, I can guarantee you if you boost all the frequencies as the EV already had, it will blow any speaker brand by far.
    I've made this exact comparison with TURBOSOUND, EV, QSC and D.A.S., and none of these are a true match for JBL.
    On the other hand, as always, great videos DJ BARR...
    Peace

      the srx boxes are tuned from the factory. they have an eq in them. you just cant see it. the app shows flat because thats the starting point they are giving you. that box is 100% eq to sound the way it does. i used to work for harman. the srx just has a less agressive eq on it. nothing crazy. every single powered box by any manufacturer is eq through dsp to sound a certain way. every one of them.

But there isn't a store in my small city I can go and check the weight. I heard there are heavy, but how heavy? I am lifting the ETX 12" by myself without any problems and I heard they were heavy.

  • @mjsilverfox

    EV ETX all the way!!
    If you've already got that better sounding EQ on the ETX as factory, and need to EQ tune it from flat for the JBL, it means that youv'e still got the extra capability to add even more bass etc with your EQ settings with the ETX, more room to fine tune further if you wish, being able to push that bass further than any flat sounding speaker will go.
    So while you're messing around just to get your basic settings right on the JBL as it's flat, with the ETX that's already done so you've just got even more room to play with your sound on the ETX and fine tune it even further if you wish with the settings on the back and with your mixer, giving you more option with your sound EQ's.

    • @Tru_Gamer

      Some people want a FRFR so they can model their guitar stuff perfectly. I think the JBL would do a better job on this because it doesn't embellish on extra bass or treble sound it simply gives that flat response, THIS is why many audiophiles will choose the JBL! But that's not to say you can't do the same with the EVs...with on some minor tweaking!

    @MrBoogaloo86 5 років тому +2

    "Both are great speakers. My money is on EV by a slight edge. Your right about the vocal clarity (edge goes to JBL) but I could offset that via the mixers eq. One has to account for their necessities : Do you need the bells and whistles/will you use them. For me, sound systems are works of art; their is a flavor for everyone. I have a specific sound that I search for in 8 thru 18 inch speakers, so diversity in brand systems is very welcoming. In one size I might be searching for a Picasso, in another size a Jackson Pollock. Events would be pretty boring if everyone had the same equipment: It's nice to see & hear different systems at events for sound comparison and style purposes. I must say that I disagree with your choice of music for sound checks. Having records (at least three) incorporated with bass, drums, horns and vocals (each record at a different tempo) playing the same 1 minute from each record for each speaker will give a broader sound quality picture for each speaker. A good example of a slow tempo record for this test is 'Sweet Sticky Thing' by the Ohio Players. All in all, this was a great shootout video; my compliments to you and your crew: Keep up the great work. *One* "

  • @stevekelly9947
    @stevekelly9947 4 роки тому +3

    Then drawbacks from the various shoot out videos like this is that sound is subjective and most importantly opinions will vary based on the application someone is wanting.
    A DJ may prefer 1 speaker over another after playing an audio track through it and a live sound tech may prefer another based on how the speaker performs or sounds with a live band and vocals being pushed from actual singers and their choice of microphones.
    For live sound applications and bands I prefer the EV.
    A DJ May prefer the JBLs because of the ability to tune them. Their mixing consoles are usually basic mixers and the JBLs would give them some advantages.
    A live sound engineer has access to all the tuning and better tuning options through a high end digital sound console. Between having access to real time analyzer (RTA) built into their consoles along side of being able to adjust delay as well as a host of other options. They can tune the JBL better than it can tune itself with the built in features.
    So, in closing. Live digital sound consoles are surgical knifes when it comes to tuning. Either speaker will sound great but when you don’t have a high end digital sound mixer the JBL has its advantages over the EV which would be a great option for DJs.
    I prefer the sound of the EVs and I suspect the company focuses on other aspects of the product other than software control because they know their target demographic are using high end consoles that already do a great job. Think about it, how many DJs are dropping $3,000 for a pair of speakers? Not many.

      I am grabbing (x2) PRX812 and (x1) PRX818XLF for 2600 dollars, not bad speakers.. And I just know that I needed two subs to rock perfectly, but one is going to do the job fine. I trust on JBL, it will not disappoint me. These speakers have wifi integration built in I just need to buy a large Ethernet cable and a good router to connect everything and have fun with EQ (and a tablet to access the App, I have two phones, but not a tablet. Maybe Tab S6 Lite)

    One thing to keep in mind is the EV powered boxes "POLE or Tripod" setting is a midbass boost preset. EV shows response curves in the manual for the box. The EV "Live" setting is flat. Also set it for bracket to dump the midbass boost. The bracket setting takes into account the half space placement against a wall mounted on a bracket. I have JBL and Ev. I am a pro and not a DJ. I have been a JBL fanboy since 1978.

    DJ Barr, I have just a question. I really like 15" speakers because they have more bass, but recently I wish I had more bass and I decided to buy an 18" sub XLF and in Brazil it's very expensive. So I sold my speaker to add some money to it and buy a couple of brand new JBL speakers (x2) and a sub xlf (x1). My question is: should I get 12" speakers or 15" if I will have sub xlf? I love how 15" sounds, but I was told that the mids clarity from 12" are just perfect, differently than 15". I'm almost getting the 12 speakers for this reason and also because it's cheaper, but I'm afraid I'll regret it for ocasionally interested in use it without a subwoofer and find myself bothered about poor bass. Speakers in interest: (x2) prx812 or prx815 and (x1) prx818xlf sub

    I use the etx because it has an active dsp that is always processing and eqing its self. i know this because when i boost frequencies on the etx especially the subs it doesnt go well, but when i remove frequencies it helps clean it. i own jbls and ive noticed they are flat, when you play a bad file on them youll know its a bad file but when you play a bad file on the etx it'll sound better. SRX is better if you want the best out a speaker and is willing to tune em up. if youre someone like me who doesnt like to spend much time on that and would rather just cut out some harsh frequencies go for the ETX.

    Because these are both so awesome my comments are on the micro-level. Really getting into the nitpicking here. EV sounded a little muddy compared to the clear, crisp tones of the JBL. JBL just seems to have that 'live' feeling while the EV sounded like playback. I am also familiar with JBL's method of flatlining the profile so you have the option of punching specific bands up...which is hard to back off from on the EV because you would be trying to EQ out the muddiness instead of boosting bands to enhance others. Quite literally sold on the SRX. Buying today.

Some budget passive PA speakers with the proper amplifiers can sound better than high end active speakers. I’ve heard JBL MR15s from 1998 with a Crown XTi amp and that system sounded better than JBL SRX 815Ps and maybe even the Bose L1s. Also having that redundancy with a passive system is just awesome.

      I ran two 18 tremors for two years. Very good starter subs. A little heavy. Good deep bass. For small parties I ran my passive satellites off the output of the subs. Very convenient. I use two 15 RCFs now. More money better bass but half the weight. I love them. P.S. When you hook up the tremors make sure you feed right and left channel input or you will not get full bass from them.
