  • After the commercial failure of Gordon Ingram’s M6 submachine gun in the early 50s, we would radically change the layout of his designs. Instead of a Thompson lookalike Ingram’s M10 (the M7, M8, and M9 doing experimental prototypes only) would be a boxy and compact affair with a Czech-style telescoping bolt. It found little interest until a meeting between Gordon Ingram and Mitch WerBell resulted in WerBell demonstrating it to excited military audiences in Vietnam in 1969.
    WebBell was an ex-OSS man who had started a company called Sionics, selling suppressors to the US military. He thought the combination of Ingrams submachine gun and his suppressor would be a fantastic package, and he found plenty of interest in special operations personnel in Vietnam. He would create the Military Armament Corporation based at his farm in Powder Springs, GA and entice Ingram to join as his chief engineer. The result would be the .45ACP M10, a 9mm version of the M10 (made for use with subsonic 9mm ammunition), and a scaled-down .380 ACP M11 submachine gun.
    MAC would have a short life, with all its assets sold at a bankruptcy auction in April 1976 - but it had plenty of time to create what would become an iconic gun - the Big MAC. Many imitations and copies would follow, but Powder Springs was the home of true original Ingram M10 and M11 submachine guns!

      Well, they're pretty great for any sort of encounter where you want to conceal as much firepower as possible. In a similar way to how gangsters used them for drive-bys, they're incredible in the hands of people like bodyguards, such as the Secret Service, who can reasonably conceal them under their suits and be ready for a fight. Guns like the MP9/Russian PP-2000 fulfill this role a bit better, but the MAC10 and the Micro-Uzi are the predecessors of those.

The perfect guns for Pablo Escobar's sicarios: 2 young assasins from the poorest Medellin neighborhoods, no helmets, fast Yamaha 2 stroke enduro bikes, a MAC or MAC clone in any caliber, and you have a perfect killing machines. In 1984, Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara Bonilla was killed in that way. in 1989, presidential candidate Carlos Galán was killed in a political rally, a sicario manages to go under the stage when he was giving a speech, the wood floor was no match for the spray of bullets underneath, and his bulletproof vest was usless when you have bullets entering in your crotch.

      Think of it like this. You need one target DEAD, no matter what, including your whole team wiped, and just you. This gun would gaurentee SOMETHING hits the target, in a very, VERY short amount of time. Thats why. If your reloading when using this gun, your likely already dead. Perfect for very spall spaces where plenty of stuffs around for a longer mag to get stuck on (the whole gunfight in a phone booth thing). THis is for when your in the room with the target, or potentially could be in the room.

    "Bullet hose" is a dead-on accurate assessment. I have a 10 and an 11, and they're fine firearms for as crudely as they were manufactured. Very sturdy and reliable.
    What he didn't tell us, and what is very east to miss about these SMGs, is that the cocking knob is also a safety feature. If you rotate it 90 degrees, to where you can't see the sights through the two grooves cut in it, the bolt can not be drawn to the rear position.
    All in all, great little guns. But you'll burn through a LOT of ammo.

    In the mid 1980's these were VERY popular, especially here in Miami, Florida. I had my own FFL at the time and I would buy semi-auto (closed bolt) MAC-10's by the case. Even though this version was semi-auto only, it was basically the same firearm minus the retractable shoulder stock and of course, no full auto select-fire (semi-auto and SAFE selectable only). People didn't seem to care though and I sold loads of them (legally). Miami Vice was in production back then and the show popularized the MAC-10 like crazy. My (dealer) cost on them was $299.99 and I sold them for $400 all day long. They also made a fake suppressor which cost an additional $29.99. It was actually a real suppressor minus the internal baffles, and the removable end cap was welded in place. Most people wanted to also buy the faux suppressor for two reasons. One, it gave the weapon a nicer/cooler appearance, and two, as indicated in the video, it made firing the MAC-10 much easier, not to mention safer, because the suppressor could be used as a forend/grip. Firing it semi-auto didn't generate the heat the full-auto version does so people always wanted to include the faux suppressor.
    In the mid 80's all the MAC-10's I bought were stamped as having been made in Stephenville, Texas and did NOT have the Cobray logo. IMHO, the semi-auto MAC-10 wasn't very much fun to shoot but lots of people would practice firing them at their side at the hip line by holding the weapon by the grip and looping their thumb through the belt loop of the pants to secure and make the weapon as stationary as possible. With some practice, one could employ the "bump-fire" method to fire the MAC-10. Most semi-auto MAC-10's were merely bought for show anyway. Most people fired them once (if ever) and would attach the faux suppressor and hang them on the wall in their man cave for people to look at (yes, some people actually did that back then). I had a 9mm and .45 acp pair for years until I got tired of looking at them and sold them off a few years ago. The semi-auto versions were great to look at but were rather boring to shoot. Today if you felt the need to strap yourself with a high capacity 9mm pistol you'd be better off buying a Glock 17 (or equivalent) with a 33 round extended magazine or a drum or tandem drum magazine. You would have a far better shooting experience and you'd have a decent pistol, too.

      I bought a second-hand Cobray M11 in the late 90s because ... well looks cool. Worst gun I ever owned. Was a civilian semi-auto only, in 9mm para. You couldnt hit a barn door from 10 yards with it. Worst ergonomics, worst sights, sharp edge trigger guard, etc. But the worst was that every so often the bullets went sideways through the paper targets, and I am talking like 10-15 yards away. Not sure what made those bullets tumble, but I sold it after a few months anyway.

      Just asking because I worked there part time for & with Perry ( owner), my full time job I worked for Mitchell iv & Geoffrey ( the generals sons) at Brigade Quartermasters for several years.
      And you bet ya, that gun is hard to shoot, aim, hit the target or hold any length of time.
      DSI would have the MACs drop shipped to our customers out of Stephenville, Tx.

    The first was the M11 without the suppressor. It was the first fully auto gun I ever fired and I was totally astounded at the rate of fire.
    I later shot the .45 and 9mm at a gun range (Red Bull?) down the street from Warbell's compound, which allowed you to fire fully automatic weapons.
    If my memory is correct, the owner of the range was somehow involved with Warbell's Soldier of Fortune training facility.
    As noted in another earlier post, the difference between being in Powder Springs, GA and Marietta, GA can literally be from one side of the street to the other, and to my knowledge the factory was always on Warbell's farm.

    This is one of those strangely iconic guns that people just kind of... love.
    I have one of the Ducktown, TN. Cobray semi versions, and friends love to shoot it. People at the local ranges stop and look at it.. They suck to shoot, but there's something inherently cool about them.
    I've read some other comments on here about accuracy. I've never had any issues with mine. It has an old Beamshot laser on it, and years ago (I haven't shot it in quite some time) you could shoot smiley faces on targets at 10, 15, 20+ yards.
    The "Trigger slap" of the semis is horrible. It has a small piece of rubber hose on the trigger to cushion it. For those unaware, when the design changed from full auto (Open bolt design) to semi-auto-only (closed bolt design) The modified bolt design caused the trigger to "slap back" every time the bolt cycled. It makes for a horrible and painful shooting experience. And yet, friends still love shooting this thing.

    My Dad was issued one of these in the 80's while working undercover narcotics in S. FL. I was around 11 or 12 at the time and I had been shooting since I was 5, but for the life of me I couldn't hit anything with it as much as I tried. I remember the rate of fire was so intense that I'd hit the trigger for just a millisecond and would immediately see a dozen simultaneous dirt hits on the backstop. Absolutely insane. And you don't get much time to perfect the technique because the mags are empty after only a few attempts. So I never did get many good bursts to hit the target with the ammo I was given. Undercover cops back then were never really issued F/A weapons but there was a situation where a certain group of southern Italian businessmen obtained OCB agents personal information. It didn't take long for us to be targeted and after some dangerous interactions the M10 was issued and I found myself in my own real Miami Vice episode.

    Back in the early 2000s (wow, hard to believe we can say that already ... where does time go?), I had an NFA dealer friend and he wound up with a suppressed M10 in .45 and one in 9x19 without a can. That was back in my SWAT days and I was regularly shooting a lot of various SMGs and automatic carbines like M4s and even an HK 53 (ah, now THERE's a cool gun to cover, though not exactly "Forgotten," I suppose). So, anyway, there I was all trained up and "experienced" and dude hands me the 9x19 M10 and tells me to do a full mag dump in a 55 gallon drum about ten steps away. Pffft, no problem. Okay ... I won't say the drum was safe, but only about 1/3 of the rounds hit it, LOL. Staying away from full mag dumps, however, it wasn't all that bad, but with that cyclic rate a "quick burst" was often more rounds than you intended. For their purpose, though, they were a cool design. Oh, the suppressed .45 version I shot was a lot more accurate than I thought it would be. Not a target piece by any means but quite capable (I did not opt for the full mag dump, LOL). The can made it hearing safe and I could hear the bullets tear through the plywood target backing quite clearly from 15 yards or so. Very interesting bit of history and honestly fun little guns.

      It strikes me as one of the few SMGs were a two- or three-round burst would make more sense than full-auto.

    • @camelthegamer7165
      @camelthegamer7165 5 років тому +2

      If your intention was a quick burst with the least waste of ammo, you could've just tried the semi fire mode. Otherwise, dump the mag, best second of your shooting life, I imagine.

    • @millimeterpeter7159
      @millimeterpeter7159 4 роки тому +1

      @Jay Arre it depends more on the weapon than the cartridge for accuracy/precision. Sure the round makes a difference but thats for longer range shooting like past 200-300m. Also .45acp has more recoil than 9mm which could make follow up shots harder.

      The Uzi fires at about ~600 rounds a minute, (call it 8-10 a second) the M11 runs at about 15-20 a second, it is a bullet hose, and the magazine doesn't last too long. But is it so much fun... On the Uzi, with practice, you can get single shots on full auto, on the M11, its double and triple taps.
