We feel like we've finally exhausted all options for fixing Trinity's engine and have moved forward with this plan: buy new engine in Texas, tow ourselves and Trinity back to Texas, continue living the adv-van-ture. Love this community, please rethink, getting a PayPal account, for the people that want to help but can't afford the great stuff in the store. Think $1.00 $5.00 and $10.00 gifts your not getting and the people your not letting help you. Between the your channels your talking 126,000 people. Get the cheap motor. 15k could buy a whole sprinter van you'd drive to mexico to begin with lol. So IMO buy a used sprinter and swap interior or a used motor. Paying for a new motor is insane, even commercial companies don't buy new motors for sprinters.
Its your life/house, just saying, mechanics and people on the cheap don't normally buy a motor for the cost of a whole new vehicle. You can check compression on a used motor and see if it will run. Only problem you might run into is those computers. No idea what the sprinter has but my Westfalia for example has 5 different computers for one motor, none cross compatible...
If you do go with a new motor, I really hope they do a good job installing it because you're seriously committed to that one vehicle forever, for better or worse.

Why do they keep complaining about no one speaking good english? It’s mexico, spanish is their language they don’t have to speak english, you all should have learned more spanish

xxnekonekox They weren't complaining that they do not speak spanish. they clearly understand it is not their country. But it is complicated to deal with a situation like this with a language barrier! They are frustrated that communication isn't easy. No ones fault 😊

lightdark00 basically I feel that since they are guests in mexico, they should be the ones making the effort to ease communication, especially since they are in need, rather than expect Mexicans to make it easier on them
xxnekonekox follow the money... The world makes a lot of money on English language tourism. If you want to make that extra money, it's an effort on the other countries to learn English where tourism is plenty or where it's wanted. Odds are between two people who speak multiple langurs, English is the common one in these areas.
For someone to be in the US, there should be no special situations, that you give to Spanish speaking countries.
As for a dire situation that involves large expenses, the effort should have been made to avoid the situation and had a plan for such emergency. So if someone only spoke Spanish vacationing in the US and broke down, if expect them to have the cash to fix the problem and not be so wishy-washy.

Just sell the all van and start a new one. Buy an older van because those engines are easier to fix, all that is new has too much electronics and just official-mechanics can fix...much more expensive to get parts and labour!!

Dude...I'd be wary trusting those mechanics. Would be worth it in the long run to have it towed to the states. You'll get higher quality work with mechanics you can actually communicate with

Very true, since already need to pay so much better tow back to State to fix because of the labour warranty. Fixing in Mexico different countries better check when back to State is the warranty cover since it's new engine. Normally car manufacturer cover warranty only within one country because model vehicle and part they are well trained to do. Hopefully everything goes well, looking forward to seeing back all those van dwelling funny and cheerful screen.
If y'all had just converted a FORD, you would be up and running maybe I love the Mercedes stuff too but this is why I would just convert an American van 😀

A month after purchasing my 4 year old bmw740il the water pump broke and it was expensive to repair. So I immediately purchased a manual and a set of tools and did my own repair for the next seven years until I sold it. You guys need to purchase the manual and learn to fix everything yourself including replacing the engine. It’s doable guys, you are so young, in a few years you will appreciate this advice.

Im with you Raphael...i have a Chilton Manual on my Yukon and do most of my work also. I've saved $$$$ on changing oil, shocks, sensors, brakes, etc.....best $25 i ever spent!! Plus youtube has videos that help also : )
The object though is not to replace the engine though. That's a 500 thousand to one million mile engine. Maintenance is essential. A comparatively cheap timing chain replacement would have prevented this. Inspection of the timing chain was obviously never done. The rebuilt engine they got was faulty, and should have been guaranteed.
Some may think this is Loco, but i am of the Firm belief, 'If you take care of your vehicle, it Will take care of you'. My Yukon has 260,000 miles on it...she humms like a kitten, and you could practically eat off it. Im about to get it repainted, New carpeting, more Michelins, and replace leather seats. I could buy a New one, but don't see the reason to drop 70K on something i could put 5K into and have it look almost New : )
Plus, i'd have to drop $25 on a NEW Chilton Manual, haha
86 Society this attitude is why I say they are young. That's the millennial way of thinking. Haha. I'm old school, I actually did a masters in physics and a PhD in biophysics when you could not live off UA-cam videos and selling merch. I am not afraid of real work and difficult tasks. Sure it's good to patronize the Mexican mechanics, I'm all for doing that. But I would start a company to employ Mexican mechanics. I am so much more confident when I move through the world with my willingness to get down and dirty and solve my own problems.
How do people who don't even work, "hustle". Pan handling isn't hustling you know that right? If a small group of supporters/family/friends buy a hoodie from you for $60, it's not a sale, it's a donation. Don't act like you're actually putting in work.
Your friends Christian and Aubrey are the best! The support they showed to you guys and for you is unbelievable through this whole "Hello Mexico" series .You were very lucky. I used to use the word blessed a lot but then I realized what about the other people in life that never get that kind of help, hence why I use the word lucky instead. Through it all I have enjoyed the series and realness. Life is not all roses and glad you shared the difficult. I suffer from pretty bad anxiety and I never would have gone through this as well as all of you.. ox ✌ PS, since I'm just 3 months into UA-cam van life and travel vlogs I am curious if you still stay in touch with each other? I know their life has changed but i hope so.!
my husband closed his auto repair shop because he spent more time trying to get customers to pay or to do preventative maintenance to avoid what happened here. also stupid people commenting: the mechanic early in the video clearly points out there's no chain on the cam sprocket! it broke.....nobody changes oil often enough. end of story. stop hating on these people or don't watch. very simple

I don't follow what you mean. A lot of people are emotionally invested in their channel and understand they are in a rough spot at the moment and have the empathy in them to want to help.

Poor Trinity has been through the wringer (as have you all) and I really hope she is up and running at full health ASAP and you can get back to your original plan of ad-van-turing in Mexico!! I think taking her back to Texas is the smartest thing to do because then you will know you are not getting the run around and you know what the quality of workmanship will be that plus you’ll have the warranties in the USA! Hey Eamon Bec, our friends from Nomadic movement told a bit of your story with the Sprinter van engine issue. So just subscribed to your channel. Keeping you guys upheld in prayer! Wish I had some $ to send. But I'm praying God blesses you and hooks you up with what you need. Seems like when things like this happen we stop and evaluate our lives. In your previous video you mentioned how thankful you were about "you are both healthy" and I wanted to applaud you on your attitudes! We have so much to be thankful for. Like thank God you guys are ok, no car accident or anything like that. And on the other side of this is such a testamony, to your friends and community helping out is so refreshing, [doesn't describe how wonderful that is]. Man the love shown here is awesome....could it be divine intervention? [I like to think God is blessing you guys with friends and community!!] I'm in CT, wish I was closer to try and help. I also have a 2011 Sprinter van, 2 wks ago the engine just stopped! Turns out it was an electrical issue. I had an exhaust leak, that the hot gases leaking out, melted the wire harness to the knox sensor. This blew one of the fuses, and shutdown the engine ECU. The flex pipe [most vulnerable part of the exh system] came apart over the years, so the section of pipe of course has a cat conv on it. It bolts directly off the turbo. [Back of engine against the firewall. Mercedes tech bulletin recommends dropping engine for this procedure. [ Welp thankfully the mechanic shop I went to did not have to drop engine] but my bill so far is $7000. [Mastercard moments] so repair is done but DEF module is not communitcating to ECU. So ECU thinks I'm neglecting DEF and will give me 7 more engine starts before ECU disables and vehicle will not work. Only Mercedes proprietary software at mercedes dealership can resolve this issue. [they calling it REFLASHING ECU] clears all error codes etc. Then hopefully the DEF will communicate properly with ECU. It is crazy! So I think you are wise sticking to the Mercedes dealer for support for this situation! My Sprinter is used for my electrical business/adventure mobile. I always wondered about this if driving to say Alaska or somewhere like how I would get help with it if something like this were to happen. Recently bought an older FEDEX Step van for my business, still has a ECU but not as crazy emissions as newer diesel emission stuff. Also bought a used Bluebird bus, I will be pimping into RV to see the country I hope. [I'm 57 and deciding to execute bucket list items, while wife and I still have good health/brain that almost works!] Oh so God bless you guys! I've been following your adventure but have not read any comments so I apologize in advance if this has already been covered. Do you know what could have caused this? It would be important to know to avoid it happening again if possible. You had mentioned that you had gassed up right before the engine failure. Could these events be related? I know the Mercedes Diesel engines are finicky when it comes to biodiesel blends. Is the composition of the fuel in Mexico the same as in the US? You also mentioned that the Mexican version of the engine has differences and I find that interesting and may provide a clue. Anyway I wish you all the best and safe travels going forward!
I'm really happy for you and think you made the best decision. I know this has been such a stressful time. Don't let any haters get you down. You can't make everyone happy and despite how honest and transparent you are on camera for your viewers, no one really knows you. I love you videos and adventures and it's really fun to keep getting to be a part of it. Hang in there and looking forward to when the two of you and Trinity can get back on the road.
I know less than nothing about engines but could that speed bump y'all hit early on have caused any of these issues?
Very low probability that a speed bump would cause engine failure. If anything, hitting a bump hard might mess up your suspension, or break a wheel (this has happened to me). But all that impact will be absorbed by your shocks (which is what they're designed for...)

I had been following you in this “adventure” (van broken) and I’m a mechanic too, so:
1. If you are not a rich person you can’t afford to have expensive vehicles in the first place, e.g. a battery for a BMW (coupe) might cost up to $500.00, can you afford that? This is the first question someone should ask before buy one of this cars (not to mention a Mercedes).
2. A “new engine” will cost more than a rebuild engine. For your knowledge most of those so call “new parts” or “new engines” are actually rebuild, including those with life time warranty, this is how the vehicle industry work today (shocking? one of my hobby is “forensic parts” new or broken, that’s how I found out about it, plus working in the feel). Don’t need to buy an engine with a title of “New”, instead buy a rebuild engine with half of the price, or find a good mechanic that can do an overhaul on your engine for probably 1/3 of the price.
3. A new engine for a sprinter van cost around $5,000, why you need $15,000? With that money you can buy a Chevy or a Ford or a Dodge van, with high top roof, unless “you only want a Mercedes” and if this is the case, is simple your choices.
4. Life is hard, every single of us have to deal with, we had “to work hard” to have what we need and/or what we wants (choices). Since we became adults is our responsibility to be the providers of everything in our life, especially for our adventures and as well as to pay for our own consequence of our acts (choice).
5. When you choice to keep “Trinity” I even have my doubt about all of this to be really happening instead look like this is your way of getting money to continue with your adventures. In any case, not a single viewer of you needs to pay for.
6. Obviously, you need to mature and probably a job. Don’t ask for money to people, you guys are young. Be creative and selling your own T-Shirts or Hats is a good idea, a way of working, and it could be a good way of revenue, don’t destroy it.

Some thoughts. Find a mexican trucking company with a flat bed and ship the van to the states. You might also be able to buy a cheap truck and trailer if the shipping cost is too much. Sell to dealer at the border. Talk to the used car manager at the dealership he might be able to refer you to the transport company. Also consider calling Mercedes at home and see if they have any suggestions.

I've really been enjoying your UA-cam videos and I think your Sprinter Van conversion is incredible. I was hoping I could ask you a couple of quick questions.
1) I'm not handy at all. I could never do the buildout/conversion you guys did by myself. Are there experienced van-builder contractors I can hire?
2) Can I finance the purchase and remodelling of the van as a mortgage? I was watching a video by another Vlogger who said that is how he did it.
3) Is keeping the van warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather difficult. How would the Van fair on a 95+ degree day her in NYC. Would the air conditioning be adequate?

If the engine has to be replaced, pull it, take it apart and see what is needed. I would think this type of bad press for Sprinter... they would jump in. Timing chains should NEVER break. Belts, yes, but not chains! There is a defect in these engines and it is definitely made us reconsider purchasing a Sprinter.
I was thinking the same thing, Rj. Sprinter should offer to fix it for free if these 4 will sign off on a PR strategy that says a nail from the road flew up into the engine and caused the damage. Headline: Damn Mexicans and Their Nails!
It had to be a defective chain or the chain was never locked properly. I don't think a nail could get inside an engine.
I've been hooked on your fun couples #vanlife for a bit now, but this adventure, this obstacle, this challenge, has been such an emotional journey for your viewers and I watch everyday to see how you guys are dealing with all this.

To save other viewers with Sprinters this frustration, what engine is this, is it an interference-type engine and how many miles did it have on it? And (if interference-type) had the timing belt ever been replaced? Thanks and wishing you a speedy recovery.
