    We got the OKAY from the mechanics to take our new engine into Mexico and continue on with our trip as we had planned. BUT, of course... things do not go as planned.

    I agree with Bec, the universe is definitely telling you not to be in Mexico at the moment... I think postpone and make sure trinity is at full health and stop putting band aids on bigger problems just for a quick fix

    It’s easy to think you are down in your luck and missing out on things, but you’re not on vacation. This is your life. You’ve got the time for setbacks.

    Feels like one or both of you should make a goal for 2018 to learn some mechanic skills. It would help alleviate some stress to at least have an idea what is up with your home. This seems real stressful.

    DO NOT DRIVE THE VAN, IT ONLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES WITH NO OIL TO DESTROY THE ENGINE

  • @vanadee1618

    Do what makes your vehicle a viable commodity. Don't negate your warrenty and mitigate you losses to keep them down.
    It is not about depression is it about reality and cutting your losses.

    GUYS!!! I can't believe you want to get back to Mexico, You need to give that engine 6 months in the states where your resources are easily available before risking that trip... I am old and conservative (regarding risk..not politics) but you need to be young and conservative (risk adverse for a while) until your engine is proven in its current platform

    • @lightdark00
      @lightdark00 6 років тому +5

      Six months is excessive. To see problems, engine related as that what was replaced, long enough trips to fully heat the engine for a number of times needed to be done. They could have visited Barton springs one day, hippie hollow the next. Thirty minutes worth of driving maybe four times would have easily found the oil problem. However after a engine replacement, you should be checking oil levels at every stop, until positive that nothing is leaking.

    • @Texastigerdigsdetects
      @Texastigerdigsdetects 6 років тому +2

      Yeah I agree if I was in a Ford, Chevy or Dodge (gasoline engines and not diesel) that would be excessive, but those engines don't cost 16000 dollars.... so I measure my caution by the financial downside.

    • @lightdark00
      @lightdark00 6 років тому +1

      TexasTigerDigs Tech I have a diesel and I have done many 1000 mile trips with it. Maintenance and being proactive instead of reactive is the cautionary approach that best safeguards the investment.

    • @Texastigerdigsdetects
      @Texastigerdigsdetects 6 років тому +2

      I am not saying diesels are not great...in virtually every situation.. I would prefer to have one myself and I am considering at least a Diesel van probably a sprinter,,, I am just saying a new engine (freshly installed) should be broken in if possible in an area where service is convenient even if its a gasoline engine though I think that a Chevy Ford or Dodge would be easier to service in Mexico (and in the US) than a Mercedes Sprinter.... I do not DISLIKE diesels they are great! There is a reason big rig trucker have Diesel engines...

  • @lightdark00
    @lightdark00 6 років тому +8

    This is like fate is trying to stop you from going further into Mexico.
    That rebuilt engine change needed time to be debugged basically. You should have had a great time seeing everything around Austin for a couple days, before expecting everything to be 100% the first time with a vehicle repair.

    Ugh. I’m so frustrated FOR you guys!! 😫😥 I don’t know...I think if it was me, I would just drive back the 3 hours to get it fixed & go home. I would feel something in the universe didn’t want me in Mexico, for whatever reason, like Bec said. And I would listen to that and go home. But if *you* guys decide to keep going, awesome!! I wish you nothing but the best.

      Rebecca Huber I agree, I know it would be a massive hassle but that engine and the install work is under warranty so I would bite the bullet and drive back to Georgetown and the. stay around that area for a few days driving it on day trips to make sure all is completely okay before going anywhere either Mexico or home. I cant but help agree with the gut feeling that Bec had, I think that it’s usually a good thing to go with it but, as you said if they continue in Mexico I wish them all the best (and luck)!
      I do enjoy the vlogs so I’ll keep watching regardless of what they choose to do. But I REALLY hope they just decide quickly to go back to Georgetown and not to try and let someone they can’t understand fix it and maybe stuff it up further.

    Well...Somehow I'm not shocked by this turn of events, can't say taking the new untested engine on a drive back to Mexico was the smartest of all moves...Perhaps Eamon should take some automotive classes or something to have a better understanding of how engines work and to do minor repairs...It's part of being self-reliant and not being at the mercy of others...especially in Mexico

  • @CaptLinuxfan
    @CaptLinuxfan 6 років тому +57

    Logic at 8:41... Seriously. Buy a ton of oil and get yourselves back to country where you can speak the language to sort this crap out.
    Maybe EHFAR or whatever, but don't assume maximum risk in the name of "oh well it all happens for a reason". Maybe the reason is to get out of Mexico. It doesn't mean you've failed or weren't able to do it. Don't get caught up in that kind of ego trap.
    Think of it this way, you might not like it but it's the truth, you APPEAR (whether or not you are isn't the point) to be very affluent, have demonstrated naivete with the local language AND know little about the vehicle. You're kind of an easy target.
    I sincerely hope you haven't been taken for a ride already, and I'm not saying that you have, but you're really putting the trust of your health, well being, future, and finances into people you either don't know very well, can't speak to without an interpreter (another person you need to trust) or both.
    Is it worth it to prove a point?
    (Also, Eamon, this girls life is in your hands bud. She’s not being depressive she’s being smart.)

      Steve C I agree - the Mexicans are gonna have no respect for the stupid rich gringos in their eyes. who knows maybe your initial break down wasn’t terminal but some opportunists sought to make it terminal so you spend loads getting an engine refitted in Mexico - they must have been gutted when u went back to USA to get it fixed and be happy to get an opportunity to try and cream you again --maybe not - maybe they had the best of intentions -- but something to be weary of

  • @SAFT_NB

    Amigo. I honestly say this respectfully and not in a rude way. Cut your losses. Sell that van with a new certified engine in it to get the most money for it. That van build you have is awesome. The size of that van is awesome. BUT that diesel engine is absolutely terrible. AND that brand Mercedes is only good to lease, never to own. Take the money from selling that van and buy a Ford, Chevy, Dodge or Nissan van with a gasoline engine (non-turbo). Almost any mechanic can work on it and non diesel labor rates are cheaper too. Getting parts are easier too. And you won't even have to worry about that DEF stuff that is always troublesome and expensive to repair and maintain. My friend I'm sure I'm not the first one to tell you this, because it's true. In the long run you will be much happier and less stressed and you will look behind these days. (And here goes all the negative comments after my post, lol).

  • @Squiibbin
    @Squiibbin 6 років тому +6

    Bec is right. Pay attention to the mechanics like Mark Osborne commenting here. For something like an engine change there needs to be a period to shake out the issues before you take on more risk. You put the mechanics under some pressure to perform by putting them on camera. You guys have a great attitude but now is not the time for a Mexico road trip.

    So sorry for this setback! You guys are enterprising and will figure it out. I thought when you guys took off after new, (rebuilt engine), that you had proceeded prematurely. After an engine swap, the first 500 miles are tentative. There are so many things that could go wrong. Only the stress of stop and go traffic , cool downs will reveal the health of engine. Remember in a rebuilt/ new engine , not everything is exactly new, there are a lot of reconditioned parts, cleaned parts. Seals and gaskets have to seat. They do this through expansion/contraction. Heating and then cooling. My advice, get it fixed in USA, then spend around 500 miles driving locally around the dealership. Find something interesting to do there for a couple of weeks. At the end of that break in period, the world will be your oyster. Good luck!!

    I haven’t read an other comments so if I am repeating - I apologize.
    When I had my engine replaced I was told to not drive more than 50 miles a day for the first week bring it back after the first 300 miles to have the oil changed. If I remember correctly - been awhile..... I had to have the oil changed after 100 miles and then worked my way up to 1000 miles.
    All this was included in the cost of the engine.
    It needs a period of time to meld with the transmission.

    I believe it. Remember when Mike said "we're all human and mistakes happen"? Doing an engine transplant isn't like swapping batteries on a remote. With the time crunch you put the mechanics under there just wasn't enough time to find all the little bugs that come with a project like this. Hopefully it's just a mistorqued bolt and you're good to go. I've got to say these videos changed my opinion of the sprinter for the worse. I was interested in them but I've never had any such issue in over 200k with my Fords. vans

    Enhanced Experience? Darling all the Unicorns are dying. I bet your grandparents hate your boyfriend. What ever he says do the opposite. Or do the sensible thing...I mostly feel bad for myself. I didn't think I was one to rubber neck a crash, but here I am. There is nothing minimal about a train wreck.

    As far as the defective replacement engine... I would demand the engine be replaced with a "new" rebuild engine because running that low on oil will have aged that engine substantially! The chain guides and timing belt have definitely experienced excessive wear as did the rest of the engine. Don't allow them to patch their mistake and you take it on the chin again in a few thousand miles when your timing chain breaks again. They had better stand behind the warranty and replace the defective engine. Mercedes really has mud on their faces! In some ways, you are exposing something that has probably happened to many others, but nobody hears about it. Since I learned of your troubles with the Sprinter... YT has recommended dozen's of the Sprinter break downs videos. You have helped many people from not making a mistake of buying a Sprinter! Not all is lost. Take Care!

    one thing I had coming to my mind when watching those vlogs about the broken engine: in one of the older posts you mentioned that your van is actually a Dodge with a Mercedes emblem on it. So why all the struggle with finding Merc dealerships in Mexico and Texas when it's actually a pretty common engine ?!
    I don't know too much about car engines, I work on helicopter turbines, but I seriously don't get people who leave for such an adventure (and putting a few 10k miles on a used vehicle is an adventure) without any knowledge at all? Even my mom knows more about engines than these two. How can someone be so naive?

    This totally reminds me of my 1974 routemaster rv trip - first alternator issues - twice - then tow causes seized break shoes to loosen - still I try to drive 400 miles to try and get fixed at some Indian reservation we staying at in Dakota - in the process this ruins the vacuum power booster for the breaks.. and stuck on reservation who turn out to be clueless ... think had 5 tows ..... All whilst trying to travel 1000 miles in limited time to get to burning man - I never been so stressed - I was physically ill - but you know what you live and learn and I have never let myself get that stressed again also reminds me of my boat breaking - on the canals we got something called “boat time “ if you try and rush it everything spirals for you. You just gotta learn to ride the slow wave and let control of your grand plan to deal with the immediate issues the world presents you and learn patience ! It’s all part of the adventure ! One things for sure it makes for one hell of a story after much more interesting than if things had gone to plan - I wish I had blogged my American road trip breakdowns ( van + me) then in 2010!

      Eric J. Holien grow up it’s called freedom of comments people have different perspectives on the events I am not the only one and I love their videos but this I have to agree to disagree with you it’s not hate it’s watching the videos and making a comment ! They should have not rushed it they could have saved themselves a lot of stress and worry as well as time if they would have let the guys have it just a bit longer to make sure of the fluid levels and seals where good ! they spent a fortune on the new engine another day of testing could have saved them what they are going through now! Wisdom of those whose gone and done it before ! but hey live and learn the hard way! I with them all the best and I will continue to support them and watch them ! Thanks for the police work comment police hahahah

    Taking a Mercedes van into Mexico is a roll of the dice. A Ford , Chevy or Toyota is
    the most reliable way to go! Parts and labor know how is far easier.
    Also , Van needed a good 24 to 48 hours of test driving.

    Reading through the comments no one really said anything about the oil level when you saw the error but a quart low is pretty serious actually, engines are very particular and even a half quart can cause issues. With a trip like this and the extensiveness of it I would check the oil daily in the future.

    Gotta say, you did jinx yourselves with the "we're not stopping" and running behind type comments. Good old Murphy's Law bit you again! It was a rebuilt engine. I hope they have a good warranty and it is not a billable repair. Take a breath because in a grand scheme of things a vehicle doesn't create happiness. Enjoy the day and keep your chin's up!

  • @1jeepinray
    @1jeepinray 6 років тому +2

    Yes the spirit's are saying don't go.
    Or is it just stupidity that drives drives your choices, at least give the machanic where you are a chance before you blow this engine.
    You obviously have no idea when the oil leak started, personally I would have checked it every time I stop the engine for a couple of days until I had a feel for the new engine.
    Never mind driving over the border, at some point you really need to think about your choices.
