    Hi, guys!) It's challenging. I'm mechanic too. Just little advice: let them strip your engine (take oil pan, front chain cover and valve covers off) a part and show you what exactly wrong and why that happened. You need to see by your own eyes which part went bad and then take a step to get a new engine or rebuilt yours. Don't listen what they guess. Mechanics not always tell you the truth. They sell parts and labour to make a living. It might not be that critical that you think. What I will do first: drain oil and take filter off and check for metal shaving. Take a pictures, enough to have some facts and send them to your mechanic or someone who knows a vehicles to let them explain all details. Don't give up, things happen. Take care)

      ZhekaFilms I think that’s really good advice, perhaps a bit difficult to do with the language barrier though plus it will cost more $$. Eamon said that he saw the drive shaft (or cam shaft??) not spinning so at least they know the truth of that, that that vital bit isn’t working. I can’t help but wonder if this was a result of the “speed hump” in the middle of the highway that they hit.

      You are very welcome guys) If I can help you somehow just let me know. I know that is difficult to get everything done right far away from home without qualified specialists. Ask mechanic to explain you what is broken, why that even happened and show you broken parts. Those Mercedes Diesel engines itself last long time and easy can make over half a million km. Your van was services in Canada by qualified Mercedes mechanic, that should not happen. I think problem might be not with engine mechanical part. Tons of other factors can effect it. Qualified troubleshooting is a key to successful repair. I don't like to guess but, it might be an electrical communication issue between modules or other problem with controlling units, sensors, solenoids or engine equipment. Ask them to connect advanced scanner tool (like Antel Maxi SYS MS906 - all repair shops use them; or Mercedes scanner software) this one can pull all data from all electronic modules. The data can be printed out for deep understanding, when error happened and what went wrong. Computer saves vehicle performance info and codes.
      I like your vibes and cool vids. I have been subscribed for few months to your friends channel then UA-cam recommended me to watch your vids). Thanks for sharing your van life travelling experience. I am looking to get Mitsubishi Delica for myself for travelling and camping as well. Might see you one day in Canada. Cheers!

  • @lesliephinney7617
    @lesliephinney7617 6 років тому +19

    I would seriously consider towing it back ( not as expensive as in the US ) to Laredo US side and finding a engine there and a install there in the states. You are chancing sending any engine you buy through customs and customs can be a potential nightmare, with import fees and the real possibility you may be paying for something that can either get hung up for quite some time or go missing altogether. Tools, mechanical parts Technology and electronics have a big value here in Mexico and get seized or just disappear very often. If you can find a motor In the states and a mechanic in Laredo you won’t be charged import and when it comes to selling your van in the future the potential buyer will likely be put off when you tell them you had a engine installed in Mexico.

    • @eamonandbec
      @eamonandbec  6 років тому +2

      Appreciate your thoughts on this one Leslie! We are definitely weighing out all of our options and towing back to Texas is on the list ❤️

  • @pqm4889
    @pqm4889 6 років тому +21

    As soon as you said something in the engine wasn’t turning, I figured it had to be a snapped timing chain. It’s a known issue in these vans, mostly because the contractors that typically use them in their previous lives don’t carry out the scheduled maintenance when it’s due.
    Being an interference engine, when the timing chain breaks, it allows the pistons to contact the valves since the timing of the rotating parts is thrown off (they descend into the piston chamber in this type of engine) which in turn drives the valves upward into the camshaft, turning everything into mangled metal.
    Some people will argue against changing the timing chain every 100k miles, but it’s better to err on the side of caution rather than to gamble against a new engine.
    On that note, I’d suggest that your travel buddies have theirs changed sooner rather than later to prevent the same catastrophe. When purchasing a Sprinter, unless the previous owner has documented proof of the last chain replacement, I would do it myself to be 100% sure. Especially since most of the vans we (as a vanlife community) are buying have well over 100k miles.
    Good luck guys!

    guys... I hate to say this, but get that van North ASAP.... all this run around down there is going to drive you crazy and they are going to rip you off in the process. My sister has lived down there for 15+ years. She loves it, I love it when I go visit for long periods of time, but you could spend $15k and still get a shit engine, with no warranty on work. In America, there is no language barrier, there are warranties on work, usually a bit of transparency, and a sense of urgency. GOOD LUCK YOU TWO!! We are all rooting for you.

    i like you guys, but i think it's kinda rude to own such an expensive van and then ask for $$$ from people, kinda shocked me... I hate the entitled attitude of a lot my generation, dudes you have a 30k van! I'm donating my HARD earned money to people that are sleeping on the streets or living off food banks, sorry. If you can't afford the upkeep, get a less flashy van. Sorry if i come across rude, i do love your vids, but i kind of lost some respect for you guys. I work my ass off, doing 3-4 jobs, maybe do the same? Plenty of work you can do from the road- sell art, busk, edit for people, do online copywriting work, online marketing work, start another channel, put out more content, do sponsored vids, take a digital nomad-eque job in your skill set, if you can play anything get gigs, sell handmade goods on ebay/etsy, teach classes in music/yoga/editing/english/ whatever there are literally so many options to make money while you travel, rather than ebegging..... Anyway I don't want to be so negative, i'm just kind of shocked guys. My parents are wealthy and i have travelled the world and have never asked for a hand-out, i have taught english rather than swallow my pride and have had to stay in some awful places, as a consequence. Grow up a little bit, these things are sent to test you and make you self sufficient and you feel so accomplished when you fix it through your own hard work....

    Hey guys! My husband is a mechanic here in Canada. I have been watching the vlogs and filling him in as you go... he saw the hispanic mechanic spraying "diesel" into the engine intake. However, if he was actually using starter fluid (gasoline like, flammable fluid) it actually may have caused some erosion or drying the seals within the engine. Have the mechanics there taken the engine apart to see if the seals are dried out? Diesel engines need lubrication so if the mechanic used starter fluid that may be your issue. Diesel itself has the lubrication qualities within. We would suggest doing that before buying sonething brand new!

  • @theloosemoose8200
    @theloosemoose8200 6 років тому +2

    I'm a mechanic/ rebuilder... the timing chain breaking does NOT guarantee the motor is damaged beyond repair... I've rebuilt interference engines with broken chains with no problems.... you need to have the engine internals checked, MANDATORY... these guys are jumping to conclusions.. I would pull the engine, check the internals and do a rebuild. Worse case, you need to replace pistons, rods, valves ect ect... to say the whole engine is scrap metal is foolish....i guarantee you they will keep the old engine to rebuild it and sell it.. I would help you do the rebuild but you're too far, I'm in florida right now.

  • @jacobhendrickson8935
    @jacobhendrickson8935 6 років тому +3

    I don’t see why there sayin a broken timing chain is a for sure need a new engine scenario. I’ve had 2 different chains break both were interference engines and I got lucky both times with no internal engine damage. But both happened while trying to start the vehicle. If the engine was at a low rpm chances can be no damage. If the engine was at a higher rpm internal damage is going to happen. That motor could be fine other than needing a new timing chain or it could be bad as well.

I'm a strong believer in the concept of "You get what you give" and you (Eamon & Bec) put forth so much happiness, positivity and light wherever you go. No one can say repairing a broken engine will cost you 6k, it can cost up to a certain figure, but you need to open the engine and access the damage, you cost could be way less than that. You just need to get estimates, for removing and opening the engine and reassembling and replacing it back, this is fix cost and can cost more than 1k, the rest will be parts and machine work. I just rebuilt my nissan 2.8 diesel in Uruguay and the whole rebuilt only cost me 2k.

    I'm confused, maybe I missed it, but why are you are shopping for a rebuilt engine without stripping down your current one first? I'd confirm it was the timing chain that broke, then assess collateral damage, if any. At least take off the top end and inspect before you drop thousands on a complete engine. Your pistons may be fine...maybe some bent valves, which would only require a rebuilt cylinder head. A rebuilt engine may not be needed at all. I'd rule out every possibility first...a rebuilt engine should be your last resort.

    • @David-ry5il
      @David-ry5il 6 років тому

      Because if the timing chain snapped I am guessing the valves etc all get mashed up I do not know these motors. in some engines if you loose your timing belt or chain parts hit one another in ways they were not meant and it does a ton of damage. I am guessing they mechanics are saying you need a new motor... plus I seriously doubt the places they are at are able to rebuild one of those motors they likely do not have the speciality tools.

    • @bodibrodice147
      @bodibrodice147 6 років тому

      It's a Mercedes authorized shop. Of course they could rebuild it, that kind of stuff is how you are Mercedes authorized shop. That's what these motors are made to have done, and that's why new ones cost $12,000. It's because they're designed to where when something breaks, or wears out, you repair, or replace the individual part, at a drastically reduced cost, rather than just tossing the whole motor, and getting a new one. One things for certain, if you don't tear it apart, you don't know for certain. Even if it is an interference design, it is possible that valves stopped in a location where they did not contact the pistons. Or maybe just one or two of them did. Won't know until you open it up, and look. Either way, rebuilding the existing engine is cheaper, and far better than just mindlessly throwing it away. If these people think a years worth of paper coffee cups is bad, they should stop and think about the ramifications of an engine, and all of its components having been built all over the world, then shipped half way around the world on a cargo ship, and assembled, then shipped to North America, and then trucked to wherever they end up needing it.

    A broken timing chain is not a good reason to replace your engine. They are cheap and very replaceable. You said it just ran out of power? If it banged or made grinding noises then it would be a totally different thing. Do not pay for some thing you do not need. UA-cam a timing chain replacement video for your make and model. I know you cannot replace it yourself but you will know what and how long it will take so you do not over pay. And that whirling thing under your van is a drive line. Good LUCK

    Family rides in a 1993 VW Westfalia. Feel your pain. When transmission went out at 330k mile it was $9,000 quote about 1,500 miles away (so $1000 shipping van one way too). Luckily, found another trans and also found out in future to just put a 5 speed in for $1800 before this other trans goes out! You will learn a lot from this and be much better prepared next time.
    What's baffling is how you lost the timing chain (the thing is bullet proof and links the cam to the crank). Normally low oil pressure or worn timing chain guides (sounds like marbles rattling in engine way before it ever breaks) are an issue. For the timing chain to just go out no warning is VERY RARE!!!!
    FYI get your sprinter tuned by an aftermarket company that has programs for your engine. It helps with so many things but I'll let you do your own research on aftermarket tunes for sprinter van diesels.

    I have a Theory: What if, you got someone to tow the Van (Like a Flatbed or one of those Really powerful tow trucks) and have whatever that towing service would be to take the Van up to an Austin, Texas Mercedes-Benz Dealer that way the process might be a little easier than having a Language barrier problem and a Bunch of people who Really dont know if there is a Engine in Trenity Mexico. And then from there you guys could Dicuss with the dealers what needs to be done with the engine and all of that technical crap I dont know about. But I hope this might be a Start, I hope you see this, and I also hope everything will Work Out.
    P.S Now that is just one black mans opinion. Lol

    My wife and I live in Baja Sur, MX. We had a 2003 Eurovan, LOVED it... until we had engine problems. It literally took months for repairs because some little part was always forgotten, which had to be ordered, which took another 2 weeks... happened over and over. We have an excellent mechanic down here and his recommendation is Toyota... anything Toyota... because even in Mexico he can get parts in 2 days, and he has the most current diagnostic software/hardware for Toyota. Also Nissan, same thing. Our next van is going to be a Nissan NV Cargo Van, high roof... should be bulletproof, easy to repair when the time comes

    When your low pressure oil light came on a while ago, that was the start of your problems. Oil pump pickup in the sump was either partially blocked or pump was failing, ended up heating your cams up making them tight, stretching your chain causing it to jump, doing in your cams and snapping the chain... Cant remember if the oil light came on before or after your main Mercedes dealer service? If it came on after then the dealer disturbed some muck in your engine causing the engine failure...

  • @davidrolando4957
    @davidrolando4957 6 років тому

    Okay I don't even want to watch this I think you guys got ripped off. All you need is a new timing chain. I had a 6-cylinder Nissan Diesel and I put easily over 800000 miles on that engine and I broke a timing chain. I thought it was the end but all that had to be done was to time the engine or another words put the two different sides of the engines at the correct position and installed a new timing chain and it started up like a champ. I sold it with 1300000 miles on it and the guy was so happy when you bought it because he was going to send it to Honduras or something and make it into a taxi. I mean buy it on the internet, send it FedEx to a friends house in a big city, go pick it up on a bus, and give it to a mexican bus or truck mecanic that usually only work on diesels. Come on Guys

    If you love Trinity like family as you have mentioned, ask yourself; if your family member got sick, would you stay in Mexico to have them treated or fly them home to the states for proper medical care.
    ***** Another crazy thought, since you all are so close, can you ship Trinity back to be fixed and like pile in one van and Eamon and Bec can buy a foam pad and sleep on the floor as you all use the bathroom outside the van anyways and you always cook, eat and hang out together in one van all the time, so that way you can continue the vacation and besides it would be easier as no two vans to coordinate or follow , cheaper as shared expenses of gas, parking, and safer as all together. There is enough space.
