I can understand why dr youn is concerned. There are many doctors who fall on both ends of the spectrums with regards to skill and ethicality. Horrible complications happen a fair bit - entire tv shows are built on that premise. It is good for dr youn to encourage serious consideration before any procedure. It seems not enough of that goes on. Also, good to see a skilled doctor performing procedures.

Well, no, we as a “society” aren’t okay with 15 year olds getting nose jobs. That’s a small bubble that you may just be exposed to as a plastic surgeon, definitely not the norm (unless it’s a culture where at 18 girls get a nose job funded by their parents, which is also fucked up.) No plastic surgery should be the norm for young people, unless you’re getting reconstruction
Edit: to people commenting about societal pressures, why don’t we focus on creating a society of kind, genuine people, where noticing and putting people down over their superficial imperfections isn’t the “norm.” I’d rather have an ugly outside and kind personality than a beautiful outside with an ugly personality (the latter of which I’ve found to be the case most often with people focussed on their looks). Let’s focus on what makes us unique, rather than going for a cookie cutter look that’s been decided for us by those out of touch with reality.

He’s so concerned that everyone should have the opportunity to look like a celebrity...... maybe it’s just me but I don’t think that surgical enhancement should be the standard for beauty, it definitely has its place, but it’s not a cure all

@@kayteeriley8550 I was put off with his thoughts on people advocating for therapy first. I suffer from body dysmorphia and have gone to years of therapy for it. Being bullied for a facial feature shouldn’t mean you have a “better” argument for plastic surgery than someone else because it affects you daily. Like, fuck, I understand having a witch’s nose, but also how many people before them were able to overcome and even accept their own bodies, rather than modifying what they dislike? And how he was like “do you know how much therapy these patients have been though because they hate how they look?” Like, yeah fam I do, I’ve gone through it.
Idk, watching this video was like watching someone out of touch from reality argue something they’ve never experienced. Yeah, he’s exposed to circles that throw themselves under the knife at any imperfection, but that’s a tiny percent of people, not “society” as he calls it. I like the first half of the video, but the second part is a bit manipulative. I may not have experience, but those photos either have weird lighting or look to have make up. I am sure that what he said is mostly true, some exaggerations here and there.
What I am worried about is the stuff he isn’t saying, like what the scarring looks like, or how he showed a good photo as example for thick scars instead of an actual one.
I believe he is definitely an experience doctor but there are some suspicious things about the video.

It can’t be said enough: The most important thing you should do is choose the surgeon who specialised your specific procedure, someone who has a lot of great reviews for that specific thing. As someone who’s had upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) at the age of 26 I chose the surgeon with amazing reviews for blepharoplasty and it was about 95% of her overall reviews. She told me she usually refuses to do this procedure on young people like me becuse it’s not permanent (eyelids droop back down with natural aging) unless there were real indications, which I’ve had. Long story short I was a part of her unlucky statistics (that EVERY doctor has) and she missed the placement of scar on my left eye. The right one is perfect. But since it had to be someone I’m glad it’s me since I absolutely do not care about the scar being visible. I think that is because I didn’t go into procedure out of insecurity, i have accepted my droopy lids and became confident in who I was and what I looked like so I’m not trying to hide the fact that I’ve had it done, I think it’s bada*s that I had my eyelids cut open while I was chilling chatting with my surgeon. I’m basically going around screaming at people ASK ME HOW I GOT MY SCARS and showing them pictures of me not being able to blink because of severe swelling. I’m fun at parties.

I agree that young people should wait to get plastic surgeries. Most people are unhappy with their looks in general but that doesn't mean their looks are "bad," or will be bad in the future (changing beauty standards, changing facial structure etc). Especially in younger people, particularly women, dissatisfaction in personal appearance can largely stem from external circumstances or mental illness. Of course, that's not meant to invalidate those that truly can't get past it. I just think it's a better philosophy to align your thoughts with reality than to make reality align with your thoughts, if that makes sense.

When i was younger i wanted a shorter filtrum, smaller nose, bigger eyes, etc. Altogether, big eyes, small nose, short filtrum, this creates a child. Society makes women feel like they need to look like toddlers in order to be sexy. The whole thing is gross. If i would've been able to change my face back then, i'd regret it now at 34yrs old, because i now loe my face, all the things i thought were ugly are now my favourite features. I used to hate my black hair and bleach it and colour it, it started going prematurely grey at 28yrs old, and i never got to appreciate my unique natural hair colour for long enough, i never got to have it for a while whilst loving it, now it's going away forever. I wish whatever poison is out there making so many women specifically, hate the way they look, would just fizzle out. Beauty is subjective, so few people out there are actually ugly, most people have something stunning about the way they look, and no one is perfect. Perfection is over-rated as well, once it's reached, and unbearable emptiness ensues.

I really appreciate the existence of this video! Hearing two doctors kindly/respectfully discuss a procedure(s) with opposing opinions has been so extremely helpful! After watching this (and some other videos on lip procedures), I am convinced I will eventually get a lip lift (probably in my late 30’s) if I feel that it’s needed. It was so helpful to hear the pros and cons of all options. No option is perfect, and if there’s something you want to do, you have to go with which option suits your needs best. I really dislike the look of fillers, especially with prolonged use. I would want a very subtle procedure that simply made my mouth/lips slightly more youthful. I love the teeth showing, and shorting the distance between the lip and the nose (if things have gotten a little more far apart with age). I’m okay with some scarring and It’s extremely helpful to be aware of the scarring and to know that procedures to manage the scarring will need to be considered/budgeted for (not to mention, just having realistic expectations). My plan is to do as little as possible, embrace/maintain what I am naturally, and find options that help me age gracefully. I’m so worried about how many girls my age (20’s) are doing really intense amount of cosmetic work. They think because it’s an injectable, or done under local anesthesia/awake, that it isn’t a big deal. But it all adds up, and these girls end up looking… scary.
After seeing so many lip fillers in person, online, and watching videos about them, I can 100% say I’ll never go that route. It always settles into looking so heavy and weird…

This is just my observation, but I think this happened to Kim kardashian back in like the 2015 era. I remember seeing her face and noticing she looked different, a lot older, not nearly as beautiful, and ultimately that her lip was long. I notice these subtle differences as a portrait artist. Not to mention cost of upkeep. A lip lift does seem to really address many of the drawbacks associated with filler but it's good to remember all cosmetic procedures have risks and cosmetic surgeons further specialize in their own field with specific procedures. Continued education as a healthcare professional is extremely important and i would refuse to work with anyone who did not participate in that on a regular basis. I personally would ask my doctor a million questions and i would hope they would have the patience and professionalism to answer all of them or perhaps even the willingness to refer a collegue who is more experienced with a specfic problem the client would like to address. I am curious how far out from surgery the after photos are! Who knows if the patients continued to see improvement and fading with what small amount of scarring is present :) i personally think a subtle scar i can cover with makeup is far better than the risk of embolism, V.O., and scarring associated with filler but everyone is different :). I could see how for some people the fact that filler is not as permanent is actually what attracts them to the procedure.

Another compelling video. I appreciate your point of view, as well as Dr. Youn’s. I myself, would not feel comfortable having a lip-lift. I’ve always had very thin lips and it just never really bothered me. If it did bother me, I’d hunt down an excellent lip liner/tinted lip balm duo and learn how to better use those to create the appearance of a slightly fuller lip. I say “slightly” because I don’t even think I’d be comfortable having “full” lips, as I’ve spent my whole life with my thin lips. While I’m not looking to change anything, I AM looking to preserve everything I can for as long as I possibly can! That said, as I get older, I have other areas of concern, mainly the lower third of my face. I can see marionette lines forming and it’s depressing. Although I would LOVE to believe in a quick fix for them, I’m beginning to better understand the ugly side of fillers, thanks to the existence of your channel and another excellent You Tube channel made by a surgeon in Australia. There are a number of well-known surgeon’s that I would not let near my face with a ten-foot pole, despite (and actually, because of) their very popular You Tube channels. I think it would be of great benefit if cosmetic surgeons here in America would be open to doing facial MRIs on patients experiencing problems that may be due to dermal filler build-up, and/or dermal filler migration over time. I do believe that, rather than filling my face up like a balloon, whether intentionally or not, I’m better off being strategic about it and waiting until I am a candidate for a face-lift. In the meantime, I’m focusing on trying to find an excellent face-lift surgeon. While I do this, I’m trying really hard not to dwell on my lower face. A lot easier said than done. From your videos, you seem very capable and, as important, you seem genuine. I’ll keep watching. I’m a Chicago girl in the state of New Jersey so New York is within the realm of possibility. Thank you.

I've seen many different placement of scars with some placing the scars too low. I've placed the upper part of the incision into the nostrils and at the base of the columella. The lateral part follows the edge of the alar and never beyond the alar. The bull horn technique that is potentially visible is at the base of the nostrils. So by placing the incision into the nostrils the bull horn incision is slightly modified and better concealed. Keep the distance of the lower part of the incisions below the nostrils at even length and the flap of skin should move into the nostrils to better conceal the scar. The undermining of skin should take tension off of the incision with layered closure.

I don't know if it's different in America but for the most part in the UK people aren't generally ok with young people having cosmetic surgery before their 20s, never below the age of 16 and usually not before 18. My little sister just turned 16 and she is absolutely not mature enough to make a reasonable and informed decision about permanent cosmetic surgery nor are the majority of 16 year olds since their prefrontal cortex is still developing.

This doctor seems to exist in a bubble where surgery is common and even the standard recommendations for minor imperfection - imperfections by the standards of highly airbrushed photos and social media.

Personally I like the look of the lip lift more than fillers. There's only so much you can achieve by adding volume (with fillers) before it throws off the balance of your face and you look puffy or have duck lips. However, I do have scars under my nose from rhinoplasty and I don't think I would be happy if they extended beyond where they do now. (Btw I love my surgeon for making me look natural! She's fantastic.) But of course the look of scarring can change with so many factors so I would hope anyone performing these would advise their patients well and be honest about what's possible for each individual. That's my two cents 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @kirstendemko620

My bullhorn lip lift is the best thing I've done for myself and my confidence. I used to overline my lip like CRAZY in an attempt to shorten my philtrum, but it wasn't until I took the plunge and got the lip lift that I realized how my entire face changed for the better. Yes, my philtrum is shorter, but that's not the only benefit. The teeth show is something I hadn't even thought about, but now I feel confident seeing myself speak in videos without my lip rolling 'down' and hiding my top teeth. By the way, my scarring isn't bad at all. You can't tell without makeup unless you look closely under my nose. I tried lip filler for the first time recently, and while it has only made my lips look more amazing, I couldn't imagine using it to replace the lip lift. I tried botox lip flip before too and again, while it helped maybe a TINY bit, it definitely couldn't give me the results taking the plunge on the lip lift did.
