I wish you would give a disclaimer on using Whatnot. A lot of your viewers are novices to the numismatic hobby and should be warned that Whatnot does NOT offer the same security and customer support eBay and other larger platforms do. Their customer support ratings are abysmal and they often offer as little as 1% compensation on lost or never delivered items.
Nothing embarrassing about not knowing everything. What would have been embarrassing was if you defiantly disagreed with ever slab and were whining about the cleaned/scratched grades. You set a good example for the community by being humble about not being perfect. Cheers
The 3 easiest ways to tell if a coin is cleaned are: First look for overall luster impairment. Second look for hairline marks anywhere on the coin either localised or overall. Third if a coins wear patterns require age to create but the coin exhibits a "bright" appearance (gold is different) the coin is likely cleaned. There are further methods to determine surface conditions but these are the best to learn for on the spot grading. As far as scratches go any marks that are not created by reasonable mint process or storage (bags, bins) or average accepted circulation wear is considered damaged. Therefore a scratched coin receives a holder but no straight grade. Its all about a forensic analysis of the coin its not personal. These Details grades can sometimes not effect the value of a rare coin. Other times with many coins the value can be reduced by 25-30% less than a numerically graded coin. Cheers and happy hunting!
Love the transparent layout and helping us learn With you. IDEA: could you get a video of PCGS experts to take a look at those coins and tell why they got those grades and go through their process???
It's really hard to determine I found a 1971 fs 101 ddo last year out of coin roll hunting I took a chance getting it graded it came back from NGC ms64 red I was very happy with that. Congrats
A scratch is damage, damage is not gradable. Yes “bag marks” are technically damage as well but they occur naturally to a coin through normal handling. Scratches occur from improper handling of a coin. That’s why one is gradable and one is not.
Awesome ....and hey sometimes the older pcgs coins I have I re submitted one that was graded in the late 90s it was an 1880-S Morgan has a MS-62 on it had it regraded it came back a MS-64
I think a scratch affects the grade because the old idea was that the grade should, in theory, be so consistent that a buyer could buy a coin of whatever grade sight unseen and have a good idea of what he was getting. A grade of x with a scratch would only disappoint a buyer who expected an x graded coin in good shape for grade x. And, PCGS can't just give the coin a lower grade and release it because someone wanting that grade also probably doesn't want a scratch version of that grade.
Main thing with scratched coins is that it is not desirable. It's not like a bag mark. Say, if a MS62 coin has a scratch, you can't just lower the grade and call it AU58 if it's still UNC. YET chances are a MS61 coin will still be more desirable than a 62 with a scratch. For PCGS to call it details scratch, it would have to be a significant scratch that significantly detracts from the overall appeal of the coin to the point that it is no longer problem- free and hence can only be given a "unc details" grade. Mind you, a high grade scratched coin will still be worth more than a lower grade one. You really need experience to identify problem coins.
My grade estimates. I've been told I undergrade coins. 1907-P $10 AU 58 1899-P $5. AU 50 1906-P $2.50 Harshly cleaned, Ungradable, Unc details 1907-P $2.50 MS 60, Scratch 1915-P $2.50 MS 60, Scratch 1915-P $2.50 AU 58 1926-P $2.50 MS 60 1927-P $2.50 MS 62 1910-P $2.50 MS 64 1914-D $2.50 MS 60 1927-P $2.50 MS 62
I did pretty good, overall. Some of the cleaned coins I missed but the color is a little off. The one I undergraded was the 1927 that came back MS 64. I graded it a MS 62.
Hey bud. I have a 19xx (xx=the last 2 digits of date seems to not be printed) a wheat penny. Seem to be mid-struck, struck through cloth, or lamination error) Could I send you images, images with digital microscope also. And you tell me something about it?
I got 3 raw coins i would like to send for grading 2 gold coins and 1 PlT coin.. wounder how much they will charge me if they all come out 69 or 70 just saying..
Great learning experience. I am gun shy about submitting coins so what you taught me was sometimes its worth the risk. Especially for the purpose to prove authenticity. Great video.
For pre-1933 gold it's almost always worth it just to prove authenticity. Just be careful about sending in modern coins, you'll likely lose money on those

Any Hair line marks. is cleaned. Use 20 * loop. Scratch is something that happened after minted. And bag marks you can tell. That is huge scratch so i say its good
I don't get the grading system. If coins can get "+" for eye appeal and toning, why can the same be true for a scratch or blemish a "---" grade should given. An AU 58 minus can given to indicate damage to a AU 58 coin with a scratch comment given.
1906 $2.50 Liberty Cleaned with $445 all-in costs. On eBay $340 to $396 would have bought this coin in auction with similar grade and possibly without being cleaned. I would certify this one as another bust.
1899 $5 Liberty AU58 your coin valued as $750 with costs of $645. eBay auction on 12/5/23, PCGS MS62 old green tag sold for $574.99. Another bust on this recent grade I would say.
Max, you need to turn the PCGS box other side. We are able to see the grade on next coin when its still in the box🙂. Either way, great video. You know what they are and didn't blame PCGS for the grades. I have seen people who keep blaming grading companies for the grades they received. There is a reason the grading companies exist. Amazing job👏👏
1915 $2.50 Indian PCGS cleaned with your all-in costs of $445. On eBay (where America and I, myself, shop) 11/21/23, NGS MS60 sold for $369.99. Another bust I would say.
Per eBay sold listings just visited..1907-P Liberty in AU58 graded fetches way less than $1400. In fact MS61 NGC $1000 in sold auction 10/13/23. I would say your coin was a bust.
1914-D AU58 Indian $2.50 gold. Your all-in costs are $445. On eBay, 10/22/23, PCGS AU58 sold for $482.75 with 25 bids. You are $37.75 to the good on this buy.
It seems to me that silver, like Morgan's get much better grades than gold coins. At shows or online I see coins that look almost perfect come back as a ms62 but a morgan with the same contact marks would be 64-65. I really like Indian coins but I don't have any. The 1927 has a good grade, that should help with the grading cost.
1927 $2.50 Indian cleaned. Your all-in costs are $445. On eBay, 10/1/23, ungraded sold for $360 1 bid. On 11/26/23, auction in NGC MS62 with 12 bids sold for $451.50. Another bust there on this line item coin.
In my "no one cares" opinion....the "cleaned" designation is very obvious AND very subjective at times!! For example...I submitted 3 Proof/Mint Coins several months ago that came DIRECTLY out of old Mint/Proof Sets that came back as "cleaned"!! I really think that graders ASSUME that if a 100+ year old coin is shiny, it must be cleaned?? Very, Very frustrating!!
Sucks that some didn't make a grade but ya can't win' em all I guess. Some tidy profits in there anyway. Great video! 👍 Also, shouldn't be embarrassed at all, just think how many people will never touch gold in their life.
You didn't make money because you graded them, you made money because you bought them for less than they were worth. Perhaps you should check with a coin dealer and have him pre screen so you don't spend money buying or sending in cleaned/damaged/or low grade coins. Your A.U, 10 dollar gold is obviously A.U. and could be sold as raw. After all you bought it raw:) Glad you had fun and I enjoyed your video, just feel bad watching you throw lots of money out for little results. A good 20 power glass would have shown you the scratches and cleaning marks.
The reason why a scratched coin makes it ungradeable is that grading was intended for dealer to dealer sight unseen sales. Anything that would detract from value like a scratch will never come back with a straight grade. Lesson learned, but several of these were blatantly obvious and you should have saved your money on grading. There is a great series of vidoes from PCGS on grading, here is one on why coins come back with no grades. ua-cam.com/video/cJKl4bOP9II/v-deo.html
