It is not true now, China has the most articles published on science and technology n patents over the last 5 years. George Yeo seems like a lovely guy, a spiritual man, and he tries to take a larger perspective on things, but his views are misguided and rather naive. He even comes across as quite the apologist for the CCP. Just because the Chinese population has been ruled over by dynastic totalitarian dictatorships for its entire history doesn't mean that is therefore the logical and natural cultural fit for China now and going forward. It doesn't excuse away the blatant abuses and unchecked power of dictatorships such as the CCP especially in the form in which it exists today. It's a conveniently reassuring excuse for inaction, be it in international politics or in interpersonal relationships, to say, in a measured and considered voice, that striving for change and wanting to rein in a bully is born of arrogance and a lack of understanding of the other party. More practical and wise to side with the bully. We all live in this same world and it's good to share ideas on forums such as these, on how we can make the situation better, but Mr Yeo hardly seems to offer any insight other than 'we should not interfere', let the Chinese government do its thing. Refreshing to hear this. Something I have thought about my whole adult life. The feminine is missing from American politics and political power structure and whenever it gets introduced, there is a huge backlash, not just against the feminine aspect as "weak,' but against women themselves. I hope I live long enough to see this change and all will be respected and sustained, whatever our gifts and talents.

Together with LKY and Prof Kishore their insights and knowledge on diplomatic affairs have greatly influenced and shaped the geopolitical situation globally particularly helping build bridges between China and the West whose understanding in this area were often superficial.

Would've been ideal if she is, but it's understandable. Reasons 1) Asia Society, her present employer is a US-funded think-tank 2) She was formerly S Korea's foreign minister hence her views & values are very aligned to those of US & West. In any case, S Korea is a US satellite state 3) She has studied & worked in US, has lived & spent significant time there hence her views & opinion is heavily influenced by those in US making it skewed & biased.

George Yeo is absolutely right and the U.S. should recognise China as an ancient, resilient and now once again, a global superpower. However, China should also introspect and ask itself why so many Asian countries turn to the U.S. for security assurances etc. China is THE power in Asia and will lead but should also be the security provider in the Asian Pacific region.
I agreed whole heartedly with this speaker as geopolitics as currently orchestrated will not on its own create the platform for multicultural engagements to secure trust amongst its citizents

It's easy to build bridges that anyone can pass on or to not build any bridges. It's much harder and more important -- more helpful -- to build bridges that have ethical check points, based on mutual (international) agreement, for both parties that pass by.
This ensures there is mutual respect, consistent, transparent and consultative relationships, not just with those who have the power to build bridges (or destroy them), yet also for the many people who pass over them and for whom are affected by the decisions of the powerful.
China's economic success is at the heart of why the West has always feared and hated "communism"...even w/ a Chinese character. Capitalism (privately owned bus. and industries) cannot compete with industries and resources that are well managed by the central authority of a nation-state who have access to the collective contributions of their population. This is what capitalist have always understood, and now insert terms like "overcapacity" into the lexicon to divert from having to explain capitalisms failure to compete in the free market. It reminds me how they invented the term "whataboutism" to divert from having to justify brazenly hypocritical positions.

George Yeo seems like a lovely guy, a spiritual man, and he tries to take a larger perspective on things, but his views are misguided and rather naive. He even comes across as quite the apologist for the CCP.
Just because the Chinese population has been ruled over by dynastic totalitarian dictatorships for its entire history doesn't mean that is therefore the logical and natural cultural fit for China now and going forward. It doesn't excuse away the blatant abuses and unchecked power of dictatorships such as the CCP especially in the form in which it exists today.
It's a conveniently reassuring excuse for inaction, be it in international politics or in interpersonal relationships, to say, in a measured and considered voice, that striving for change and wanting to rein in a bully is born of arrogance and a lack of understanding of the other party. More practical and wise to side with the bully.
We all live in this same world and it's good to share ideas on forums such as these, on how we can make the situation better, but Mr Yeo hardly seems to offer any insight other than 'we should not interfere', let the Chinese government do its thing.
