    Just got a spd sx special to trigger certain parts of our backtracks so we can fill out the songs and don't have to run the full tracks. This is my first multipad. It has way more features han I realized. These vids are very helpful.

      @@TimBuell I know for me when I first got one and was looking up tutorials, it was basically how to load them and basic overview. What would have been great to have is a vid that covered the process from loading sounds, tweaking and adjusting, and then executing in a love situation. Just like a walk through of the steps and what you add efx wise. Just that add from verse to chorus you showed was super helpful. Stuff like that. 👍🏻

    Hey, Tim. What outputs do you use for when you link the pads with one pad having the click track and the other running the backing track. I need to be able to hear the click as the drummer running tracks but keeping the audience from hearing the track. What all do I need to accomplish this?

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  2 роки тому

      I usually route the click to the "headphone out" and the tracks to the main output.
      That is the easiest/cleanest way to do it. Hope that helps!

  • @austomj

    Great video! Have you ever used a kick drum / V-drum trigger with the SPD-SX? Like a Roland KD-10 or KT-10? I'm curious to know what it's like hitting a pad with a stick vs. using a kick drum trigger.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  5 років тому +1

      I have used those, but only a little. And they were never mine, they were always someone else's that I was using. But I can say that if you dial the sensitivity in, you can do some really cool stuff with triggers.

    Do you use the wave manager software that comes with the SPD-SX? Would love to see a video on utilizing the software. I just received my SPD-SX and have watched all your videos trying to get a good understanding for incorporating it into our band's sound. Thanks for all these & hope to learn more from you as I start using mine.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  4 роки тому

      I actually don't, I'm old school and load everything on by using a USB flash drive. Helps make sure I have everything on a flash drive incase I need to make last minute edits or restore from a back up.
      People really like the software SPD-SX Editor though. Check that software out. People say it is 100x's better than the software Roland has stock for the unit.

    I’m planning on adding sample pads around my kit to use during bridges / intros etc. would you think the SPD-SX would be a helpful tool to run all the pads through? And how many pads could I connect to it?

  • @SLuna27
    @SLuna27 4 роки тому +2

    Very informative. I'm thinking of getting one for studio recording but not sure how it would work connecting
    it to my Mac. Im using GarageBand for Mac and would like to physically play the drum parts in without going through trouble of mixing my kit. Any tips? Thanks.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  4 роки тому +1

      To use the SPD-SX with your computer, you are probably in best shape if you connect the pad via MIDI into your computer. This gives you the most control and flexibility with what you record. You will need an audio interface to do this, but other than that it is fairly simple.

    Excellent video! I want to know some tricks or how pass my samples in logic x to my Spd.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  5 років тому

      That's a good suggestion. Quickest tip I can give - Roland doesn't like the format of Logic's .wav file it outputs. So if you export your samples from Logic as a .wav, and then load them in iTunes and convert them to wave in iTunes - the Roland will be happy with your samples. (I realize now this is super confusing to type haha).

  • @PaulWallification
    @PaulWallification 5 років тому +4

    What's a cheaper version of this? I am not looking for making loops-I just need a clean and crisp electronic sound.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  5 років тому +2

      So Roland made the SPD-S before the SPD-SX and you can probably find used SPD-S pads for $150. Or you can find a used SPD-SX for cheaper. I know Yamaha and Alesis make similar products - but I've never used them so I can't speak to the quality.

    Hey Tim Thanks, very helpful! i have a question tho, can i aslo use the spd sx as a monitor system? thinking of plugging the monitor line that comes from the mixer to the audio in where i can hear almost everything, the instruments together with the vocals. would be okay? i mean, would it not damage the spd sx? thank you!

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  5 років тому

      I wouldn't try that. You MIGHT be able to get that to work. But I would honestly just carry a separate little mixer (behrenger makes good/cheap mixers) that have 3 or 4 inputs. That will give you a lot more flexibility on building a mix for yourself and sending stuff to FOH.

    Hey Tim, do you always play the kick sounds with your sticks or do you also have a kick pedal that you bring along with your SPD SX?.. I love that you just use your sticks but I'm just curious if you also use a pedal and if so which pedal it is. Cheers

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  4 роки тому +1

      I don't use a kick trigger (just more to set up) haha. But roland makes several that would work for something like that. I recommend using one that requires a full kick pedal, not just a little switch you play. They hold up longer and are more realistic to play.

      Since you need to hear the SPD-SX and your laptop in your headphones at the same time, I would say that getting a tiny little mixer (Behringer Xenyx 502 is $40 new). That will allow you to hear both in your headphones at the same time. And having a little "problem solver" mixer like that is never a bad thing.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  4 роки тому

      That is honestly a better problem than them being too quiet. If they are too loud I would just turn them down on the SPD unit. Every venue/room you play in might need a slightly different volume adjustment as rooms that have a lot of bass build up will need less gain from your low end samples and rooms that are very harsh will probably require you to drop the volume of your high end snaps/claps/etc.

    Dude. Cajons. The struggle is real. 😂

  • @1DayAsADog
    @1DayAsADog 5 років тому +7

    Most drummers can’t play Cajon. They can botch it up and kinda sound like something. But cajon is for percussionist. You’re not a cajon player because you played a pop pattern on it. Like a kit, you need technique and skills to play a cajon.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  5 років тому

      Absolutely agree! Cajon is an amazing instrument when played by someone who is using proper technique and playing a cajon for cajon's sake, not someone who is trying to make a cajon sound like a drum set.
      I should have made that more clear. You are totally right.

    Cool video except all the animosity towards the cajon! I get the opposite experience. Everyone thinks my cajon sounds like a drum set! Nuances make or break the music.

    • @TimBuell
      @TimBuell  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed! I have ZERO nuance on a Cajon (as do most drummers I see in Nashville playing them) so I decided to leverage an "instrument" I already had instead of go that route.
      But fully agree that when played with nuance and skill - Cajons can sound amazing. I'm just NOT that player haha.

    • @MatthewBauerMusic
      @MatthewBauerMusic 3 роки тому

      @@TimBuell that's a shame (not about you but your statement about Nashville drummers in general). You'd think across the board more would use it but to each their own I guess. One DOES NOT have to play a Cajon but they are extremely versatile instruments for use in the modern medium. I appreciate your response. All the best.
