    ABOUT
    _
In this video, I talk about Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov, self-deception, knowledge, truth, and not lying to yourself.
If truth is the actual way to our destination, knowledge is the map that we have. And when the map gets us to our destination, we say that knowledge is true.
But knowledge is never truth, and to confuse the two is to confuse the map for the territory, the directions for the actual way, what was for what is, and to close oneself off to all learning. Mistaking knowledge for truth is the root of all self-deception. But a mind that separates these two things, that realizes that knowledge is never truth, that the map is never the territory, always remains open to change, to testing, to learning, to updating its map in accordance with the territory, and because of that, it will never deceive itself.

      It's the Epimenides paradox.
Priest says all who think they are correct are in fact wrong.
Priest thinks he is correct, therefore he is wrong.
So all who think they are correct, are in fact correct.
Priest thinks he's correct, therefore he's correct.
So all who think they are correct are in fact wrong.
Priest thinks he's correct therefore he is wrong... And on and on.
It a sort of circular reasoning fallacy. The fallacy being that the definition used in an argument cannot be an argument that concludes the definition is wrong.
That's also wisdom, just not in the way you think it is.

When you're not convinced that you have (much of) a future, you don't plan for it either. If you're convinced you have no future, you're always going to chose solutions that work in the short term, regardless of the fact that you'll have to pay a heavy price for it later, in the future. People constantly lie to themselves simply because they seem to have lost the ability to actually see themselves, their thoughts, their actions, instead they are too busy looking at others, judging others as it’s an easier thing to do. It takes lots of courage to be honest to oneself.

I feel if I can look at myself honestly, not just observing my greater ideas and actions resulting in successes, but also the really ignorant and embarrassing decisions that led to various troubles ect, I make a breakthrough in bringing my life into spiritual and psychological balance. Im convinced spiritually, the moment I can truthfully assess myself and stare into my own darkness without running away, it loses its power and my life will lighten from the inside out.

Sometimes the ones who have a truth they tell of themselves is a truth that is self destructive though so they must lie to themselves especially if they are on a path to recovery/self improvement. Saying things such as "ugly" "stupid" or something may be exactly how the person believes they are calling themselves beautiful and intelligent when they in fact aren't is a lie but it's good for the spirit and mind.

I think what Dostoevsky meant was that we know facts, see events, feel emotions, but we deny that they exist or don't matter. We can see details or errors but choose to ignore them thinking some things are ignorable when they may be not. This happens all the time when we take shortcuts or refuse to own up to mistakes. I don't think it is about mistaking knowledge for truth. I think it is about pretending to be ignorant of the truth to not be seen as culpable. Once a person knows something and it's associated consequences, one is immediately responsible for the consequences, particularly if there is no one else looking. By pretending, for example, you are not aware of your own emotions and faults, you can claim ignorance, be absolved, and even blame others for your own emotions and faults. That's an observable and common human behavior, just like people trying to pretend they know or don't know or people claiming the truth. While I can agree that knowledge is a human perception and truth exists irrespective to human perception or understanding, I don't think that is the takeaway from Dostoevsky. Because to even be cognizant that we lie requires us to know the truth, otherwise we could not even perceive of the self-deception. And, non-cognizance is not the same as self-deception. Self-deception requires knowing the truth. How can one otherwise know one is deceiving one's self on purpose or accidentally?

Even then, I just have to make gross generalizations instead of reading a library full of books. And, I would have to work hard to discover every single scientific mystery all at the same time. I don't think it is anyone's job to be all knowing and all present. Certainly not mine!

I remember life when I lied to myself. I consciously didn’t know I was living a lie. Subconsciously my truths would slip out at times but they were coincidental at best so I thought.
Now that I don’t lie to myself and accept my place in life and accept that sometimes I struggle with it I tend to experience a more fulfilling existence. I hope that makes sense. Lie to oneself is a daily practice we endure it when we are obliged to suppress our feelings to fit in . We keep our true emotions away to the point we end up not knowing what we want and how we are at this point. Dostoevsky wants us to reveal our feelings and thoughts no matter how difficult the situation is. To cease love is a result of not recognizing our real feelings and ending up with losing our self-respect. The beauty of Literature is in its openness to all kinds of interpretation and my understanding and yours of the quote are part of a whole picture.

Nice video 👍 “A map is not the territory it represents" - Alfred Korzybski, father of general semantics.
Map shows river, forest but it does not contain any water or tree as the Territory. Our perceived knowledge ("map") of the reality ("territory") is an abstraction of the reality, not the reality itself.
The problem is we forget that we made our map.
Knowledge both liberating but also a trap.

I found this quite interesting. I've never thought about how the knowledge that we have isn't particularly true. Like my plans and aspirations in life or different methods of how to live my life are not truth. They're all simply maps that could help guide me to the truth. I think about how there's a lot of different flavors of philosophy or religion. At times they can claim to be the truth but the reality is that they are maps to it. You have to follow that map to see if it's correct or not. I've tried to use many different productivity systems and they show to be the truth but they're really just a map. Some systems I have found to be valuable in bringing me to where I want to go and others actually aren't the map that was able to guide me to truth.
Just my thoughts on the matter and beautifully made video.

This video has reincarnated my whole perspective to understand that you were not wrong, it was the knowledge of yours at that time which did served the truth. Pen down a new map and pursue the destination again, and if failed again, don’t think you failed, it was just your knowledge that did serve the truth.

I feel like this is true. We have our ego and we have our other self, seeing its reflection and offering the possibility of introspection ; It is a part of us that’s coming to life, and as other truth and knowledge, it has some to teach us all. We must embrace this deceptive aspects of our being to be able to move and grow better.

A map is not the territory it represents, but, if correct, it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness. - Alfred Korzybski, Science and Sanity (1933, p. 58)
