  • How to test and replace an oil temperature sensor; P0196 - P0197 and P0198. This sensor detects oil engine temperature and sends that message to the ecm. On the end of the sensor is a thermistor. The resistance decreases as temperature increases. You can quickly test the sensor via digital multi-meter and a hair dryer.
    P0196 - Incorrect voltage is sent to the ecm when comparing signals from other sensors, such as the coolant temperature sensor and intake air temperature sensor.
    P0197 - Low voltage; less than .17v
    P0198 - High Voltage; greater than 4.7v
    An average reading at idle is 1.0 - 1.4v
    This vehicle happens to be a 2010 Subaru Impreza non-turbo.

    Hi, I have VW Atlas. Getting P0196 code ,in the video you mentioned they throw that code if the sensors are not correlating as they should . So Is there a point in me even testing the sensor ? If the oil temp sensor is not working properly would it throw PO196? I have cleared the code but it eventually came back and have been watching the oil temp, nothing out of the ordinary. We have had extreme cold temps but not sure if that would matter .

      @@CarsNToys Hi - Just wanted your advice. Now my AT Oil Temp sensor keeps on flashing intermittently despite having changed the ATF. I did a diagnosis and it gave an error code C0108 and C0140. Any suggestions?

    Hey, I’ve maybe been having a problem with my oil temperature. According to the obdii interface I use the oil temp never reaches the correct operating range. For example I just drove to Vermont and back - about 240mi one way and the maximum stable temperature I saw was 142°F. It did occasionally blip to 260 and thereabouts. For my engine (ej253) the correct temp is about 176. I'm planning on testing the sensor now that I know where it is but do you think that the sensor is malfunctioning or could the oil actually stay that cold? If it was reading correctly I have no idea what could be going on. Thanks in advance if you actually see this.

    Your sensor has a copper washer that seals it to the block which is what prevents oil leakage. You can see it laying on the block when you removed the sensor. No RTV is needed

    I'm getting code 196 on a 2006 mercury mountaineer showing "engine oil temperature sensor out of read code range" and like others, I'm unable to find the part. The only option is a coolant sensor. Not sure what to do. Found one at Advanced auto but it's out of stock. Driveworks 31240.

    Great video... Is the voltage reading did not decrease that would mean the sensor is badd correct?

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  6 років тому +1

      Correct. The ohms reading should decrease when heat is applied and vice versa.

    Hey, I have the code P0197 on my challenger. I replaced the Oil temp sensor to see if that would fix it, it did not. When I start the car it reads oil temp until I drive for a little then it stops reading and the CEL comes on with that code. Any info on how to diagnose the problem? What tests I could do to find it? Any info would help thank you.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  5 років тому

      Is the oil temp increasing or staying at a constant temperature?

    • @brandonhuff1650
      @brandonhuff1650 5 років тому

      CarsNToys increases to like 206 and stays around there. Oil temp itself seems fine, the sensor just likes to shut off and the CEL comes on saying the circuit has low voltage.

    So i have a weird one. I'm getting these code errors, p0196 & p0198 just as shown on this video, but when i called and spoke to Autzone and O'Reilys, they claim they have no listing for the oil temp sensor what so ever. They called it a coolant sensor which to me does not sound right, as 'ive read on other forums that those are 2 different sensors. I'm seriously confused if i bought the correct part and if i'm going to replace the correct component in my 2013 nissan altima.
    It was only $10 so not a big loss if its the wrong part for the nissan, but it looks exactly like what you show here in your video. The only difference is they called it a colant temp sensor and not an oil temp sensor.
