Awesome video Dave! Always enjoy your knowledge and teaching. Always followed you on t.v. and the internet. Your straight to the point and transparent. Bravo brother! Thumbs up to Dave if anyone is still watching this in 2018
Dave I really like your common man approach to everything and the fact that everything you do has at least a dual purpose and in most cases more. Thanks for your videos.
That works well, I am impressed again. I rigged up a home-made mount a few years ago but it doesn't sit as straight/parallel as yours. Thanks for posting this, I am now going to modify mine.
Well Dave, you have again motivated action on my part. After watching your On The Water Series, I have built a canoe motor mount for my Osage Classic. Now on the hunt for a trolling motor. Keep up the good work bro.
Great vid as always. I made a shaft and prop for my cordless dewalt drill and you would be surprised how long just one battery will last. Thanks for the post, I know it is your busy right now.
301+ views on the counter right now, that looks like a new thing. Another great vid Dave, super informative, thanks for sharing so much knowledge with us!
This looks like a good idea Dave. As it could be adapted by routing a slot along the board. Using wood off cuts, L shape at the bottom for the gunwhales, knob on the top epoxyed to a pair of nuts & bolts etc. They would slide in your slot. That way your clamping system would be permanently attached to the board. And would fit either canoe.
Nice DIY Dave! If you drill holes in the middle of your new motor mount, It could double as a rod holder! Add some eye screws and small bungies to keep them from coming out incase of a spill, John.
i built one similar, but with just one piece of 2x6 scrap notched to fit. i live by one of the great lakes and this is a good setup for trolling. it works as a backrest too. it's a good place to mount a rod holder also.
Great mount you made there, very cool stuff. I would love it, if you could show your views how to rebuild an old OMC Johnson 1.5 to 5 HP Sea Horse. Which IMHO is a very common man motor that will run just as good if not better than any brand new motor made today. And you can build 1 of them for less than half if not 1/4 the price of a brand new Merc or Yamaha of the same HP.
Isn't that gunwale or gunnel? Thanks for the fantastic education , I started with Sargefaria and this channel was a natural next selection. Thanks again!!
Hey Dave, If you decide to upgrade into a larger battery, this idea will make the balance of the canoe a lot better. Get yourself a length of wire that will allow you to place the battery at the front of the boat instead of the rear where all of your weight is. This will keep you from sinking the rear and raising the nose making the canoe unstable. Very common man, with a cost of about 5$ for the wire from a hardware strore and maybe a couple splices for the trolling motor leads.
I am in the process of setting up my canoe with a t motor to chase redfish. I have been looking at that 15 watt solar cell with charge controller listed at Harbor Freight. plenty of sun down here in La.
hey Dave, down here in Alabama if you have a trolling motor on your canoe, then you have to have a boat tag and a boating liscense. new law passed this year!!!
a leeboard solves this problem, simply made with a 2x6 sharpened at the leading edge to the outside(have the flat side towards the boat) that's bolted or clamped to the side of the boat, when changing directions, you need to momentarily lift the board for more maneuverability, but that's it. the whole system can be completely removable and compact. the sail design I would recommend is a latin/lateen or a crab claw sail, simple and very effective.
Wonder if you might have enough room to soft mount your solar panel on the back of the canoe, so you might be able to keep a small charge on the battery if you are out on the lake all day.
it is amazing how simple it is to make something instead of buying it for a buttload of money, bet a similar system would cost $50 at a store. have you ever considered making yourself a sailing rig for your canoe(s)? it sound gimmicky, but they are effective and wind is a unyielding, powerful force that's been reliably used for millenia to power boats. it definitely lasts longer than a motorcycle battery. it could simply be made out of PVC pipe or just lumbar and some tarp material.
i like the idea. just believe that in PA, at least, there are different boating laws when you have a motor like a fire extinguisher and stuff that viewers should check in to
On the camera mic, do you have an sort of wind screen? like down feathers or some cotton? Might be something to try to reduce wind noise. Love the videos, keep em comin' :)
Just bear in mind, all, that in some states (Maine, for example) the law doesn't make any distinction between a gasoline outboard and a trolling motor. If you're using a motor (again, in Maine, likely other states) your boat has to be registered. Just something to be mindful of, lots of tickets written around here for that. Just check into it BEFORE you run afoul of a Warden.
Instead of bolting the block that you mount the motor on you could try putting an hinge on it, it would allow you to easily lift your motor in shallow water or wherever without having to take off the clamps. In use the prop pushing you along would hold itself down in the water. Unless in reverse...
Awesomely cheap and simple. Probably should C-Clamp some kind of battery box incase you tip over. Keeps the battery from acting like a 12V anchor. Keep the battery as low as possible inside to keep the center of gravity lower then center of buoyancy. In Oregon putting any motor on any boat makes a motor boat, which requires you to get the boat titled and registered. That and life preservers keeps the tickets away.
You'd want your battery stationary on the bottom of the boat. Mounting a milk crate for the battery would make it top heavy and would encourage rolling, The milk crate would come in handy to keep random things outa the way. Ive done all this already with our 17 foot grumman
i put a lawnmower batt in my larger kyak and used a small trolling motor. plus i have a 12v solar panel to charge.. when that fails i use my homemade engine rigged up with a weed eater engine
I just tuck a 6" piece of 2X6 under the gunwale and clamp the trolling motor to that. Simple and small. My canoe is fiberglass and it doesn't flex at all.
elektricmotor= silent ,no smell light wight.works like a charm. gasoline motor= smelly, oily ,greezy ,noisy dont like them anymore since I started using elektricmotor.
Better check boating regulations where you are going to use that motor. My dad did that a while ago. A park ranger busted him and since the canoe was not register. My dad had to take the motor off and paddle back.
Thank God you left that show brother...The truth is priceless, and the freedom that comes with it eternal!!!!

Habor freight has a briefcase solar panel. It works great for me, And does not cost to much. Good video Dave.
Great thing about these motors is they make no noise. And good idea with the mount!
Thanks for sharing!
Well Dave, you have again motivated action on my part. After watching your On The Water Series, I have built a canoe motor mount for my Osage Classic. Now on the hunt for a trolling motor. Keep up the good work bro.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!!
Absolutely love your channel. Hoping to save up and get some free time to check out one of your courses
Great vid as always. I made a shaft and prop for my cordless dewalt drill and you would be surprised how long just one battery will last.

Nice, inexpensive solution. I like the idea of using a motorcycle battery too...just curious how long it'll last.
Please keep making these video's very cool. Your a good man. Great teacher.
Out Standing work Brother. Keep it up. God Bless Brother.

Cool new Intro and Music Dave! Good job with the Motor and good Video. All the best, Sepp
Great idea Dave, what lake are you on and what size? Acres and shore length, avg. depth?

Fixin' to move to bayou country, and your channel is gonna save me a fortune. Thanks in advance...
Exactly what I'm looking for. Gonna try. Thx man.
this is exactly the way I was thinking of doing it and now that you did it im going to. thanks man
Hey Dave have you ever thought about getting an outrigger kit for your canoe for fishing and filming? It would make it alot more versatile.
Great video Dave.. looks like a blast. =D
Liked the intro Dave!
Great idea. Thanks Dave
Bear in mind, that in some states once you mount a motor of any type, you need to register the boat.
Nice work, Dave!
Great mount you made there, very cool stuff.

Very cool, Dave! How badly did the motor change the balance point? (btw, gunwale is pronounced "gunnel") Cheers!

Thank you, well done cheap and easy
great idea dave , your awesome
Wich one of the mohawks would you suggest for lagoon and open ocean, if any. and if not what would b a good alternative??
Very practical! Now if I see a trolling motor at a garage sale, I'll be sure to pick it up!
I love that motor... So quiet!
Did you put any sort of counterweight on the otherside of the mount to maintain canoe balance?
Right on. Great idea
love the idea dave your the best :)

you can mount fishing rod holders on the board will be a god one i think
love your vodeos keep up the good work
Dave, does it again.
Dave do a video on your wrangler!
what size C-clamps are you using? thanks!
Wonder if you might have enough room to soft mount your solar panel on the back of the canoe, so you might be able to keep a small charge on the battery if you are out on the lake all day.
Dave, you ought sink some brush piles on that lake and set yourself up for some good crappie fishing.
it is amazing how simple it is to make something instead of buying it for a buttload of money, bet a similar system would cost $50 at a store. have you ever considered making yourself a sailing rig for your canoe(s)? it sound gimmicky, but they are effective and wind is a unyielding, powerful force that's been reliably used for millenia to power boats. it definitely lasts longer than a motorcycle battery. it could simply be made out of PVC pipe or just lumbar and some tarp material.
How long does the Battery last on an outing on a average size on a lake?
Nice and relaxing. Quiet and stealthy too. I know you didn't scare the fish that's for sure.
i like the idea. just believe that in PA, at least, there are different boating laws when you have a motor like a fire extinguisher and stuff that viewers should check in to
What kind of trail wagon do you have?
how many amps does the electric motor draw? A big enough solar panel could maybe double your time.
On the camera mic, do you have an sort of wind screen? like down feathers or some cotton? Might be something to try to reduce wind noise. Love the videos, keep em comin' :)
how many pounds of thrust does that motor have?
Awwww no Iris. Was thinking about doing the same thing with my canoe. Did the battery ever run out?
Just bear in mind, all, that in some states (Maine, for example) the law doesn't make any distinction between a gasoline outboard and a trolling motor. Dave, you should drill a few holes in that back plank to use as a rod holder and for trolling.
Is that a ranger utv?
I made one but a little different and it works great
Instead of bolting the block that you mount the motor on you could try putting an hinge on it, it would allow you to easily lift your motor in shallow water or wherever without having to take off the clamps.
In use the prop pushing you along would hold itself down in the water. Unless in reverse...
Dave do u ride a harley?
How many hours will a battery last with a rig like this?
Dave I like it good going
Awesomely cheap and simple.
Probably should C-Clamp some kind of battery box incase you tip over. Keeps the battery from acting like a 12V anchor. Keep the battery as low as possible inside to keep the center of gravity lower then center of buoyancy.

A lot of dollar stores have c clamps not great ones but they will work if you can't find used ones only problem is the biggest size is always sold out
i made one out of an old Crutch. highly similar to your design
Have u thought of looking for a semi small solar panel so u don't have to worry bout running out of juice
Ud put on out rigger on Dave i reckon if u were to sail it. :) Great Vid
A couple large diawa unbarellas work well or one to get back in the afternoon...I like doing that going back to the car off the lake.
You'd want your battery stationary on the bottom of the boat. Mounting a milk crate for the battery would make it top heavy and would encourage rolling, The milk crate would come in handy to keep random things outa the way. Ive done all this already with our 17 foot grumman
great video thanks
in Wisconsin any boat with a GAS powered motor has to have a registration...it is cheap at $32. for 3 years...(it just went up from $30)
Hey Dave did you ever check out my common man woodburning stove I made the vid is on my channel
That mount is strong enough that you can use a small gasoline trolling motor such as a Tonaka.
what about mounting a milk create to your mount. would keep your gear together and out of the bottom of the boat.
i put a lawnmower batt in my larger kyak and used a small trolling motor. plus i have a 12v solar panel to charge.. when that fails i use my homemade engine rigged up with a weed eater engine
the only addition I would put is a chain that is connected to the wood, that connects to the boat in case it falls off =)
you can get electric wheelchair batteries that are about the size of a lawnmower battery and there are deep cycle, run a trolling motor good
Cool Idea hook up a solar charger to the battery for those sunny day's and just fish all day long
Just need to mount your solar panel onto your new trolling motor mount and you would be good to go!
Nice
I would not suggest that knife.. I have an RD9 and after one outing I had chips in the blade.
cool beans brother
In florida we have to register our canoe's to use a trolling motor....ughh...big brother has his hands in everything.
I just tuck a 6" piece of 2X6 under the gunwale and clamp the trolling motor to that. Simple and small. My canoe is fiberglass and it doesn't flex at all.
FYI, Its pronounced "gunnel" even though its spelled like gunwale.
Why dont you add a cheep top off Solar battery charger to it?
That way you could put some charge on it while you are fishing.
That's exactly how I did mine
Spelled like the first, pronounced last the 2nd :)
Time for a haircut Dave...
elektricmotor= silent ,no smell light wight.works like a charm.
gasoline motor= smelly, oily ,greezy ,noisy dont like them anymore since I started using elektricmotor.
I can see using that board for a seat...muti use
Let's not get lazy now... Breakout the oar and get some exercise now and then.
Better check boating regulations where you are going to use that motor. My dad did that a while ago. A park ranger busted him and since the canoe was not register. My dad had to take the motor off and paddle back.
