My name is Patrick. I was the captain of the Jig Strike. I was last off the boat, and last off the rafts. My thanks to the crew and passengers of the Legend for the help and support.
Hey capt great job to get the call out for help and get all your people safely to the raft scary shit. Were you off the reef or close to bishop rock on a low tide or the boat had a malfunction?
I’m just glad you didn’t get farther from the fleet yet and that it didn’t happen at night, it could’ve been a much worse situation, luckily, the captains and crews and passengers of both boats handled themselves very well in a tense situation. I’m sorry for all that you lost in the incident Captain
It's on all of us fisherman, to look out for our fellow mariners. The Coast Guard are spread thin, and will often request that any vessels in the area render assistance. If you hear a mayday, or a pan pan, on the VHF - you might be the only ones close enough to save lives.
Happy to see that everyone made it off the ship safely. RIP Jig Strike. I was on the Jig Strike the trip before this one. We turned around 8 hours into our trip and came back to the dock because the generator went out.
Thank God someone was there to rescue these people. I can't think of many things that would frighten me more than being on a boat that was going down. And so far from shore. So happy you are here to talk about it.xo
Looked like text book safety. Great job Captain. Very sorry for the loss of your boat, but people and safety are always a priority and you saw that threw. A+++
The Bronx Queen was my first charter boat experience over 60 yrs ago. It was a converted WW2 sub chaser. After the war it spent its retirement mostly on the Bronx River. On Dec 20, 1989, she sank. First reports were that she struck a submerged object. Later reports cited improper modifications. Nineteen people were rescued after two hours in the water, unfortunately 2 passed away, 1 from exposure, the other had a heart attack. Communications and safety equipment continues to improve but one should always remember, who’s in charge.
Scary! Glad everyone is safe! I was on the tomahawk a couple years ago where we entered some crazy waters and the bow of the boat cracked open some time during the night and another passenger had got injured while sleeping in the top bunk (fell off and believe it was a broken toe). Boat made it back intact in the end but obviously could have been a lot worse. Also it was my wife’s FIRST trip ever. Her reasoning for never wanting to go with me prior had always been that she was scared of the boat sinking. Unbelievable lol! Glad to say she didn’t let that scare her away though and she now goes on every trip that I go on 🤙🏽
Great job to the vessels and crews that helped in the rescue great job to the captain of the jig for getting every one off and into the life raft you all did an amazing job
Thank God everyone got off safely! I know someone who was lost on the "Fishing Fool" that wasn't so fortunate & one that made it out of the whole boat, 2 people made it!
Long time ago I was fishing with one of the Taft Brothers..swell took out portside bow rail if I'm not mistaken. S*** happens when you get busy and you're making money. . I hope everybody is safe.
These were lucky fisherman getting saved. Quite a few years back the Legend was in the same predicament during a heavy storm but we were on another boat, but was only told on the return back to San Diego.
except when the fish bite, illegal immigration, homeless veterans, turf wars, drug wars and race wars. Besides that, you guys do a bang up job. I lived m there for 30 years. 1st hand experience.
My crew and I had an almost identical rescue of the 56’ dive boat Peace in 1978 near Anacapa Island. The crew and passengers were removed by the 1st 41’ rescue boat on scene. Our boat took the sinking vessel Peace in a stern tow to Fish Camp on the backside of Anacapa Island. It was the only calm area surrounded by 10’ seas.
Chunky seas, but no worse than the good ol days of early season albacore fishing. No rocks there shallow enough to rip off the portside bow at or just below the waterline. Amazing if it passed annual inspection with any structural deterioration enough to fail that bad. Maybe a shipping container just under the surface and that sunk once hit? Or, my guess is a deadhead log. Can be just under the surface floating and bobbing vertically and so saturated it is about to sink, then plunk, bow gives and the log goes down deeper in the water column. Still, we may never know, I imagine it won't be salvaged from out there. Sad loss of a hard working vessel, great job by the Cap and crew making sure everyone got off unscathed.
Take me to it be too late until costly. To recover that boat the total loss? What kind of thing goes down?Who knows how deep water will be over a thousand feet deep
@@Patriot-x8y Google Bishop Rock or Cortez Bank: it actually rises up to 3-6 feet below the surface. It's very possible for a boat to hit the rock. I'm not saying that's what happened, but I heard they were in that area.
@@vassilshtonov2837 I don’t think so. Firstly, the weather conditions each vessel encountered are VASTLY different. Second, we don’t know how long the yacht was experiencing problems before it sank, nor do we know the same thing for Jig Strike. Thirdly, none of us know exactly how fast or slow either of them sank considering we have these you tube videos of Jig Strike and one pretty bad rain soaked cctv clip from another boat. So in terms of facts, nah. I don’t consider that factual.

Greed is what caused this disaster. Bluefin has been off our coast for about five years now, and it’s been all about quick profits-turn and burn for the cash. Let’s be honest, the wooden-hulled Jig Strike had no business being out at Cortes in those conditions. Thankfully, everyone made it off the boat safely.
Ok so the word is the boat was underway and hit something. I think while at anchor some of the planks or plywood separated slightly and opened up from the bow being under so much anchor line tension in rougher seas. Then while underway that wood ripped further open and tore off the boat. These planks /plywood were in the bow flare area and they were not noticed when the anchor was pulled. That sheet in the water floating that cracked off was the loud sound like hitting something. But you know opinions are like azzhls, everyone has one.
