My wife and I were in Dhaka last month. The life on the river was very interesting to see. The river right at Dhaka is considered dead as there wasn't any fish or plant life except for some plants that had washed down from upstream.

There would have been a thriving middle class and far far far less corruption.

Colonizers brought in advanced equipment, medicine, and ideas that improved their standard of living. When the colonizers left so did the western investment and they went straight back to their old ways. It's like time stopped for them. Watch the video, they are still using equipment that the colonizers brought in.

Also when the British left India the life expectancy of the subcontinent was 27 compared to 60 today. What medicine are you talking about. The British were just here to loot and destroy and not to build. Whatever they built was for their own convenience and they left it because they couldn't take it when they left. Not to forget they built all this after leaving heavy taxes on the local people even when there were frequent famine. People were dying and the British were enjoying themselves.
Keep in mind that those people are very poor and are OBLIGED to be living the way they are. Did you notice the way they are dressed or the way the workers handle the ship's rope using their HANDS? Although there are very comfortable seats on the ship they travel standing during the trip because they can't afford those seats? You'd better not be judging and fooling around them because I bet that you wouldn't like to be in their shoes.

Bangladesh considers itself as a fast growing economy. All they need is projects to clean up the river (stop polluting points and establish STPs) and build two to three suspension bridges at the needed locations (these bridges should have lanes for vehicle traffic and sidewalks on both sides for pedestrians as well). Both India and China have the expertise to complete these projects. Bangladesh can seek their assistance. After these bridges are built, those polluting boats can be sent to scrapyard.

To be honest when I clicked on the video, I expected a much worse scenario. As someone who hardly ever travel let alone be on a ship, the ferry looks pretty clean and adequately comfortable. I remember watching a documentary about a particular train route in an African country (I forgot which country) and boy, it looked like a train ride from hell. When there was no more room inside the carriages, people piled themselves up on the roof of the train. So yeah, this ferry is definitely not the worst way to travel.
nowadays you won't see much crowded Ships because of the new Podda Bridge people can travel from barisal to Dhaka in just 4 hours they don't even have to suffer a day on those Cruise ships so nowadays they are extremely safe

Since sewage has a specific gravity of about 1.3, if those ships left to go out into the ocean, they would sink. Check out the freeboard at 2:44. Maybe if one of these goes down, since they are on a river, the top level would remain above water, but all of those packed on the other levels will be in a scramble. This reminds me of one of those disaster documentaries. They weren't sure how many passengers were on board, but it was four to five times the legal limit. Sure we had totes of gasoline on board, but the caps were on them. We kept the food vendors with their propane bottles away from them. Who is the captain? We're not sure, he likely isn't using his real name. We think he is wanted somewhere. How do you get insurance? We can't. What happens if the ship sinks? Apparently, it isn't completely clear who owns the ship.
As always, it's a function of priorities, and society's structures: safe transportation and water for the common man versus transportation to the moon. In the U.S. we have a space program, yet door plugs come out of planes and tires fall off them, but in a very limited situations. Thats why god loves them, they are poor people but they appreciate every slice of bread and they work everyday. They've got better manners than most westerners too.

In vietnam the ferry boats are not overcrowded and have restaurants and stages for performances and affordable food and are extremely fun.

Since sewage has a specific gravity of about 1.3, if those ships left to go out into the ocean, they would sink. Check out the freeboard at 2:44. Maybe if one of these goes down, since they are on a river, the top level would remain above water, but all of those packed on the other levels will be in a scramble.
This reminds me of one of those disaster documentaries. They weren't sure how many passengers were on board, but it was four to five times the legal limit. Sure we had totes of gasoline on board, but the caps were on them. We kept the food vendors with their propane bottles away from them. Who is the captain? We're not sure, he likely isn't using his real name. We think he is wanted somewhere. How do you get insurance? We can't. What happens if the ship sinks? Apparently, it isn't completely clear who owns the ship.

As always, it's a function of priorities, and society's structures: safe transportation and water for the common man versus transportation to the moon. In the U.S. we have a space program, yet door plugs come out of planes and tires fall off them, but in a very limited situations. We have a space program, yet some of the local governments have botched clean water.

This is from my native country. These ferry boats get overcrowed before the two Eid Festivals -- A lot of people head home to celebrate Eid with their families.
Other countries have chaotic roads, Bangladesh has chaotic traffic in waterways!! That is one terrible dirty overcrowded country!!
